Salduero is a town situated in the province of Soria, 14 km away form the capital, on the Duero River bank, less than 1 km away from Molinos de Duero. The largest town near Salduero is Vinuesa. This village is surrounded by mountains and forests full of mushrooms and fungi and different species of trees such as the pine, the birch tree o the oak. Its surroundings are lush woods split only by the presence of a spectacular, transparent Duero River. From Salduero it is easy to visit places such as Los Picos de Urbión, the Duero’s source, the natural environment of La Laguna Negra, The Cuerda del Pozo lake where the Playa Pita lies, an ideal place to enjoy a refreshing swim or the “Pico Águila”, a natural “watchtower “ of the area.

“¿Cuántos años, meses, días? Horas solo cumple el Duero cuando pasa por Salduero. Allá arriba, Urbión relumbra. Nieve en mayo y en enero. Ríe y llora, llora y ríe, ¿cuántas gotas tiene el Duero?” Cancionerillo de Gerardo Diego

MASS & SUSTAINABLE TOURISM Tourism is one of the world’s fastest growing industries and is a major source of income for many countries. Tourism also provides many jobs which help local Weeconomies. need to seek more

However, like other forms of development, mass tourism also causes problems such as the loss of cultural heritage, economic dependence and ecological degradation.

responsible holidays. Sustainable tourism seeks to reduce its impacts on the area visited and contributes to the conservation of natural areas.

The distinction is between the ‘traveller’ who visits in order to learn and experience the cultures and environments of the places visited, and the ‘tourist’ who visits to be entertained by images and experiences created especially for the tourist market.

Mushrooms

They are fungi. Their cells have a cellular wall, but they are different from plant cells.

Label these parts on the image

•The volva is cup-like structure at the base • The stalk may have a ring •The cap is the top part. • The gills are on the underside of the cap • Sporangia in the gills spores are produced • Mycellium is in the soil.

GUIDELINES OF GOOD PRACTICES FOR MUSHROOM COLLECTION. Take care of the environments in locations in which fungi are found!! It is important to take into account some basic mushroom collection guiding principles in order to preserve natural habitats. We must also keep collected mushroom in the best state possible for being presented to consumers in shops or at home.

GUIDELINES OF GOOD PRACTICES FOR MUSHROOM COLLECTION. •

Avoid transporting the collected mushrooms in plastic bags; the best solution is to use a basket.

A wooden stick, a cane or something similar to search between the vegetation and dead Use a large knife to cut fungi without leaves. damaging the mycelium. Wear shoes appropriate for walking through the forest

Carry a magnifying glass to be able to observe characteristics undistinguishable to the naked eyes. Bring a notebook and a pen to note interesting findings of the mycological excursion and always bring a camera. Do not collect mushrooms growing close to rubbish, main or small roads with a lot of traffic, industrial areas, as well as cultivated land sprayed with biocides

THE WATER Fresh water is a renewable resource However, we need so much for all of our activities that sometimes there is not enough. For this reason it is importan not only to protect the quality of water, but also to use it responsibly. We need to pollute less, using fewer contaminating products in our houses.

Human activities have a major impact on the hydrosphere

WAYS TO SAVE WATER AT HOME • Take a short shower instead of a bath. • A bathtub can hold between 150 and 250 Liters, a shower uses 15 L per minute.

Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth. • Install aerators on taps to reduce water flow. • Water the garden at the coolest time of the day •

• •

Place a device in the toilet tank to reduce the volume of water used Use full loads in the washing machine and dishwasher. Use water-saving or short programs.

ACTIVITY: Caring for water is everyone’s responsability Write ways to save water at home

COURSE RIVER FEATURES NEARLY ALL RIVERS HAVE AN upper, middle, and lower course. The upper course begins in the hills. Here the river is smaller with rapids and waterfalls and usually has a rapid flow that cuts a narrow steep channel through rocky hills or mountains. When the river descends to lower levels, it runs more slowly over the gently sloping land of its middle course. The river has more energy and a high volume of water. The river channer is wider and deeper. Its current no longer has the force to carry stones or gravel. This material drops to the riverbed, where it forms bars of sand or gravel or builds islands. It forms large bends called meanders. In the lower course, the river has a high volume and a large discharge. The river channel is now deep and wide and the landscape around it is flat. However, as a river reaches the end of its journey, energy levels are low and deposition takes place. The river has a wide floodplain, the area around a river that is covered by floodwaters. This makes floodplains a fertile area and they are good place for agriculture. Deltas are found at the mouth of large rivers. It is formed when the river deposits its material fasters than the sea can remove it.

Rivers

Have an upper, middle, and lower course. Try to find these parts on the image •Upper course begins in the hills • Middle course: When the river descends to lower levels •Lower course: the river has a high volume and a large discharge

What is a river basin? • A river basin is the land that water flows across or under on its way to a river. • A river basin drains all of the land around a major river. Basins can be divided into watersheds, or areas of land around a smaller river, stream, or lake. • Everyone lives in a river basin. It is part of your ecological address. You can change what happens in your river basin, for good or bad, by how you treat the natural resources – the soil, water, air, plants and animals. • As water moves downstream, It carries and leaves behind gravel, sand, and silt. It also carries bacteria and chemicals. Whatever happens to the surface water and groundwater upstream will eventually have an effect downstream. • Even if you don’t live near a river, you still have an effect on your river basin.

Activity: Make a scientific ilustration of a animal • A scientific illustration makes an image easier to understand. • It can show details that cannot be seen easily in a photograph. • For this reason, accuracy and detail are more important than artistic quality.

To make a scientific illustration follow these steps 1.- Observe the shape and size of the animal. Draw the outline and the most important body parts or features to scale. 2.- Include details to complete the illustration. 3.- Colours: should be as close to reality as possible 4.- Labels: name each part of the illustration.

Now make a scientific illustration of an animal

Try to find these leaf parts

Petiole: the part that joins the leaf blade to the stem Leaf sheath: structure at the base of the petiole that touches the stem Blade: the wide, flat part of a leaf. It has a topside and an underside. Veins: the visible lines in leaf blades, consist of conducting tissues.

Leaves have a variety of shapes and sizes. As with other living beings, there are keys to identify leaves according to observable characteristics: shape
