Sound Inside is the final show in our 2021–2022 season, and what a season it has been! A roller coaster ride that has included some unexpected pandemic delays but most importantly, phenomenal performances of great plays by American playwrights. We’re very happy to include an album of photos from our 2021–2022 season performances on pages 12–14 of this program; we hope you enjoy the memories. In years prior, this would be the time we would normally be announcing our next season. Of course, normal went out the window two-plus years ago, and we are acutely grateful for all the hard work of our staff, and loyal support of our patrons and donors and civic leaders for our continued survival in the postpandemic world. We believe it is MTC’s time to thrive, and our new plans for the coming season are proof of that. We’ll be taking our longstanding commitment to new American theatre to new heights, in new directions, and in ways that are particularly exciting for us as members of the Mill Valley, Marin County, and Bay Area communities.

While we are not quite ready to announce, we’re excited to share some of what we’re working on, including a partnership with Mill Valley’s own Tamalpais High School’s Conservatory Theatre Ensemble. Four CTE members will join our professional company for a play that will be a continuation of a play CTE will produce simultaneously. We’re also bringing you another new production from MTC’s own Playwright in Residence Lauren Gunderson but this time it’s a continued world premiere musical. There’s so much more to share with you in the coming months! HE SOUND INSIDE he took a poetry class in college and discovered that he had a gift for writing. From there, he sought only writing, first in a two-year playwriting fellowship at The Juillliard School, then the O’Neill Playwrights Conference. His play Finer Noble Gases was produced by the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in 2000. By 2006 he was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his play Red Light Winter.

He’s a playwright, novelist, film and television writer, director, and musician, a polymath who paid his dues bartending and bookselling while trying to make it in theatre. When his play The Sound Inside was tapped for Broadway by producer Jeffrey Richards (producer of The Minutes, Porgy and Bess, The Lifespan of a Fact, Sunday in the Park with George, Wolf Hall Parts One & Two, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, August: Osage County, Spring Awakening, and more Broadway plays and musicals), Rapp could scarcely believe it. He said in a Variety interview that “I had sort of consigned that this wouldn’t happen, like ten years ago. I couldn’t have expected it in a million years, because it’s a very dark, language-driven play about writers, and that’s not necessarily a commercial property. I thought I’d be one of those ‘Oh, he did a lot of off-Broadway work’ writers.’” But Rapp’s Broadway debut drew critical acclaim and six Tony nominations including Best Play.

A prolific, even driven writer, Adam Rapp confesses to writing 6 to 10 hours a day, and has penned dozens of plays, more than ten novels, numerous television shows including episodes of Showtime’s The L Word, HBO’s In Treatment, Apple TV’s Black Bird, Starz’s Flesh and Bone, and more. He has directed three films including Winter Passing (2005) with Ed Harris, Zoey Deschanel and Will Ferrell and Loitering With Intent (2014) with Ivan Martin, Michael Godere and Marisa Tomei. In addition to the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award nominations, Rapp’s awards include an Obie, a Jeff (Chicago’s Joseph Jefferson Award), the Edinburgh Festival’s Fringe First Award and the Kennedy Center’s Roger L. Stevens Award.

Born in Chicago in 1968, Adam Rapp grew up relatively poor, living most of his childhood in a small apartment with his divorced mother and two siblings. Although a jock in high school and college (where he was captain of the varsity basketball team), he never felt he fit in with any group. His brother Anthony Rapp (who would eventually originate and continue to play the role of Mark Cohen in Rent) was a child actor who often traveled, uprooting the family when shows would go on tour. Including The Sound Inside, Adam Rapp’s plays are often dark, exploring the limits of human behavior when faced with extreme challenges. In a New York Times interview, he said “For me, what makes great theater is when I feel like there’s an undeniable sense of tension, and one of the great engines for tension is dread…I always believe that if you can make an audience feel like something bad is going to happen, they will lean forward and engage more.”

Inside Bella and Christopher: Exploring the Characters of The Sound Inside Actors Denmo Ibrahim and Tyler Miclean joined KALW Radio’s “On the Arts” with host David Latulippe for a conversation about the fascinating, iconoclastic characters of The Sound Inside. Here are some excerpts from that interview. (You can listen to the entire KALW “On The Arts” episode here.)

TYLER MICLEAN: I have the privilege of playing Christopher Dunn, a freshman in the creative writing program at Yale University. He’s very passionate, very opinionated, really well-read. He’s very mysterious.

DAVID LATULIPPE: This is called a twohander. I’m always wondering why it’s called a two-hander when there are four hands involved! DENMO IBRAHIM: (Laughs) You know, that’s a really good question! It’s true, it is a two-hander. The structure of the play is unusual in the sense that it is built a little bit more like a short story, actually. Of course there’s dialogue, but there’s also large sections of storytelling. It’s a different kind of two-hander. I have the privilege of playing Bella Lee Baird, who is a professor of undergraduate creative writing. She’s a writer herself and she’s one of those people that really loves what she does. We meet her in a moment in her life where everything is changing, everything is falling apart and also being reinvented.

DAVID: How does this become a thriller between the two of you? DENMO: So much of the play is painted in the picture of the audience’s mind. When you’re reading a book, you’re creating the ambiance and the environment of the world. And in this play, the audience is actually a very important aspect of how the play unfolds. [The audience] is getting clues along the way and you’re having to piece it together. DAVID: Like a good thriller, the character we first meet onstage is not the character that we see at the end of the play.

DAVID: And Tyler, you’re playing her student.

DENMO: Exactly. I think there’s so much beautiful mystery and a stripping of what we think is happening constantly. We think we know what the play is about and then, brilliantly, the writer Adam Rapp, continues to subvert that.

DAVID: Are there subtleties that change from performance to performance?

TYLER: And like any good play, too, there’s secrets that the characters are either very aware of, and are concealing, or not really aware of, and they come out in spite of them.

TYLER: It’s a great pleasure to be in the middle of a run of a large section of the play and still be so curious. The secrets are also unraveling for us.

DAVID: Can you give a little bit away?

DENMO: And there’s so much language around what’s real and what’s imagined. A lot of the play lives in this place between “is that really happening?” or “is that being invented?”. [The play] has this metatheatrical element that becomes really exciting for us to imagine.

DENMO: Every night is different. The play itself has multiple echoes and the piece continues to reveal itself.

TYLER: (Laughs) Oh, my goodness! Give away a secret? DENMO: We can give nothing. There is nothing to give. You come see the show, you experience the show, and then it will change the next time you see the show.

A LOOK BACK AT THE TRIALS

Like many theatres and performing arts organizations, Marin Theatre Company faced neverbefore-experienced challenges during its 2021–2022 season. Again and again, leadership and staff pivoted in the face of surge delays (before 2020, who had ever heard of a surge?), audience and actor concerns, reduced ticket sales income and attending economic woes. But through it all, MTC remained steadfast in its commitment to new American theatre, and the resulting work was some of the finest in this company’s history. Here is a look back at the 2021–2022 season. We hope you were able to share all of these shows with us, and we’re looking forward to our new season that begins this fall, and to sharing the amazement, discovery, and joy that is theatre.

A holiday gift to our audiences

Georgiana and Kitty: Christmas at Pemberley Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon’s final installment in their beloved Christmas at Pemberley series extended Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice storyline into the frontier of women’s rights with, of course, a marvelous love story at its heart. Critics raved about the play and the MTC production, calling it “Delightful!” (TalkinBroadway.com) and “a feast for actors” (San Francisco Chronicle), and praising the work of the show’s designers, many of whom were old friends of MTC— including the extraordinary costume designer Fumiko Bielefeldt, whose work you will see in this performance of The Sound Inside.

Thrilling theatre from a bold new American voice

Pass Over Antoinette Chinonye Nwandu’s powerful play challenged audiences and inspired conversations that extended far beyond the life of the production—reminding us of one of the things that theatre does best. The San Francisco Chronicle said “Pass Over is Black freedom on stage. Penetrating in insight, open-armed in sensitivity and game for risk…written with the ear and the precision of a musical score for a chamber opera.” The San Francisco Examiner chose this play as its February theatre pick and other critics praised its “spiritual, emotional, even joyful” spirit.

The end of a love story, in the heart and heat of Cairo

Hotter Than Egypt With razor-sharp wit and “dialogue on a par with the likes of Harold Pinter or Edward Albee” (Theatrestorm.com), playwright Yussef El Guindi’s Hotter Than Egypt chronicled the end of a marriage, the emergence of a woman’s freed spirit, and the complexities that arise when cultures and economic classes collide and intertwine. Critics hailed this “brilliantly crafted” new play, full of “delicious oneliners that bite and tell their own comic truth” (TheatreEddys.com).

And now…a Tony Award-nominated thriller from a Pulitzer Prize-nominated playwright

The Sound Inside The story of this heralded play’s journey to the MTC stage is worthy of its own script, full of twists and turns. Adam Rapp’s The Sound Inside premiered at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in the summer of 2018. Directed by David Cromer and starring Mary-Louise Parker and Will Hochman, it was snapped up by legendary Broadway producer Jeffrey Richards and transferred to Broadway with the same cast and director in autumn 2019, running into January of 2020. Immediately, MTC Artistic Director Jasson Minadakis secured the rights to the play, conscious of its extraordinary power and eager to produce the show for MTC audiences.

Minadakis is an unabashed fan of playwright Adam Rapp’s work. “This is the second play I’ve directed by Adam Rapp,” he notes. “The first was Rapp’s break-out play, Nocturne, in 2002 at the Cincinnati Shakespeare Festival. Nocturne and The Sound Inside, while separated by 20 years, are structurally and thematically the most connected of all of Rapp’s work. Both are densely woven thrillers that weave narrative and performative text into a live experience that are both unique to Rapp and unique within Rapp’s body of work.”

But then….. Jasson recalls: “When we first acquired the rights to produce the West Coast premiere of this gorgeous play it had just completed its successful Broadway run in January 2020. Little did we know it would take us two and a half years to finally open the play in Marin.” Between March 2020 and the current season, pandemic concerns prompted a number of shifts in MTC’s plans, even within this season. “We pivoted, and pivoted again,” said Jasson. “In August 2021 we were three days away from starting rehearsal when the

What makes Adam Rapp’s work especially alluring to Jasson, and to audiences? “His obsession with how reader and writer or audience / performer / writer interact,” avows Jasson. “You’ll see that explored in many of his plays. The Sound Inside displays an Escher-like master’s complexity with how the two experiences can warp and twist into each other to create a singular experience. Adam is a master American storyteller, a prolific writer who creates phenomenal novels and compelling works for the screen.”

DENMO IBRAHIM* (she/her—Bella) is an American actor, playwright and author of Egyptian descent which the San Francisco Chronicle called “a tower of strength in the Bay Area theatre scene.” Previous MTC productions include Brilliant Mind, Noura and The Who & The What. Regional acting credits include Berkeley Repertory, American Conservatory Theater, The Old Globe, Seattle Rep, and Cal Shakes. As a playwright, her work has toured international festivals in Egypt, France, and Germany. In the U.S., her plays have been supported by Playwrights’ Foundation, The Civilians, and New York Theatre Workshop. She is a resident artist with Golden Thread Productions. Denmo is a San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle (SFBATCC) award recipient for her work on The Good Book (Berkeley Rep) and a Theatre Bay Area award recipient for I Call My Brothers (Crowded Fire) and BABA (Alter Theater). She was recently nominated for an SFBATCC award for Principal Performance in a Drama for Noura and was one of 25 theatre artists nominated for the Rainin Fellowship in 2020. ADAM RAPP (he/ him—Playwright) is an award-winning playwright and novelist. He is the author of numerous plays, which include Nocturne (American Repertory Theatre, New York Theatre Workshop), Finer Noble Gases (26th Humana Festival, Edinburgh Fringe, The Bush, London), The Metal Children (The Vineyard), and Red Light Winter (Steppenwolf, Off-Broadway at the Barrow Street Theatre), for which he won Chicago’s Jeff Award for Best New Work, an OBIE, and was named a finalist for the 2006 Pulitzer Prize. His most recent play, The Sound Inside, received its world premiere at the 2018 Williamstown Theatre Festival and was named one of The New York Times best plays of 2018. It premiered on Broadway at Studio 54 in the fall of 2019 and went on to be nominated for 6 Tony Awards, including Best Play. His playwriting honors include Boston’s Elliot Norton Award, The Helen Merrill Prize, The 2006 Princess Grace Statue, a Lucille Lortel Playwright’s Fellowship, The Benjamin H. Danks Award, the PEN/Laura Pels International Foundation Award, and a 2021 Arts and Letters Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He is the author of eleven novels, including Under the Wolf, Under the Dog, which was a finalist for the LA Times Book Prize, Punkzilla, which was named a 2006 Printz Honor Book, and 33 Snowfish, which Booklist named as one of the 50 Best Young Adult Novels of All Time. MIKE POST (he/him— Lighting and Projection Designer) is thrilled to return to Marin as a designer for this show! While he was serving as MTC’s Director of Production he also worked as a lighting and projection designer for Guards at the Taj, for Oslo and Sovereignty. He also has worked with lighting, sound and projection at New Conservatory Theatre Center with The View Upstairs, Cardboard Piano, and Avenue Q. At Sonoma State University, Mike was brought in to light Sweeney Todd. Prior to his time in the Bay Area, he lived and worked in Atlanta where he was the resident designer at Georgia Shakespeare as well as having designed many shows

BRIGID RIDGE* (she/her—Rehearsal Stage Manager) is a freelance stage manager who works up and down the West Coast. She has previously been involved with Marin Theatre Company’s productions of Hotter Than Egypt, Brilliant Mind, Noura, The Who and the What, and Skeleton Crew, among others. She has also done work at Berkeley Playhouse and Central Works in the Bay Area and Taproot Theatre Company in Seattle.

DARIA PERKOVA (she/her—Asst. Costume Designer / Wardrobe Crew) is a Bay Area native costume designer. She has designed, stitched and ran wardrobe for many theaters around the bay. Her most recent works include costume design for Anton Chekov’s Uncle Vanya at Chabot College, and How Black Mother’s Say I Love You at Theatre Rhinoceros. She is running the costume shop and wardrobe crew at Marin Theatre Company for the current season.

KEVIN JOHNSON* (he/him—Production Stage Manager) returns for his fifth production at MTC, having previously stage-managed Noura, The Wickhams: Christmas at Pemberley, Marjorie Prime, and the special performance of Lady of Largest Heart with Olympia Dukakis. Elsewhere in the Bay Area, he has stagemanaged for Aurora Theatre Company, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, California Shakespeare Theater, Magic Theatre, Santa Cruz Shakespeare, and many others. He also has stage-managed music and dance productions, including Oakland Symphony, Pacific Mozart Ensemble, San Francisco Jazz Festival (with Bobby McFerrin), International Russian Music Festival, and Dave Brubeck’s final album of his choral music, Brubeck and American Poets.

IMPLIED MUSIC / CHRIS HOUSTON (he/ him—Composer) is a pianist, composer, producer, and sound designer. He performs and records as Implied Music. He is the veteran of decades of solo and ensemble performances in jazz, rock, traditional, and classical styles. He teaches piano and composition and has lectured on music at Boston Ballet and San Francisco State University. Chris has written and recorded music for picture and stage for almost fifty years. She is a Resident Artist of Golden Thread Productions, Regional VP Metro Bay Area for Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas (LMDA), and a member of MENA Theater Makers Alliance and the Anti-Racism Task Force of LMDA. Meredith is an arts leader with an extensive background in creative and performing arts in the areas of development, management, strategic planning, fundraising, and performance. She has held senior leadership roles at TheaterWorksUSA, Soho Repertory Theatre, Theatre Communications Group (TCG), and the New York City Opera. Meredith is a proud graduate of the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) and former EmcArts: Arts Leaders as Cultural Innovators (ALACI) Fellow. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., a Steering Committee Member of the Black Theatre Commons and currently serves on the Board of Directors of viBe Theater Experience (Brooklyn, NY). As a visionary leader known for her ability to win community support, develop key coalitions and build strong relationships with a shared sense of purpose, she is passionate about devising meaningful ways to address and further the goals of MTC.
