Imageability of Temporary Cities: a Students’ Residence in Bologna’s Barca Neighbourhood

Thesis project based in Bologna, Italy. It reflects about the theme of the cities constantly changing them characteristics, due to a continuous exchange of the people. Using Kevin Lynch’s studies about the perception of the cities (The Image of The City and The View From The Road), there is a studio about the growth of Bologna and the processes that give the actual shape of the city. Showed how the city takes its form throught the centuries, it is possible to find the causes that generated the problematic parts which need an intervent, such as the Barca Neighbourhood. Designed by the italian architect Giuseppe Vaccaro, this part of the city it is a residential area that has no public spaces, green areas in a bad condition and building with historic value in a bad state.

The project use the idea of a temporary house in a temporary city to revive this Bologna’s area, adding also other types of measures to transform this part of the city from a residential and static area to a public and interactive one.

The spaces and the movements are organised following a path that brings the visitor from darkness to brightness, like a redemption journey by living the house. The upper part, the terrace, is a semi-public place used to relaxing and having a religious ceremonies holded by the priest and it helps to achieve the game of lights inside the house, as well as having an interaction with the landscape.

Bellaria - Igea Marina

The project reflects about that climate change will change also people’s lifestyle: mobility, activities, rural land and nature areas will be the he heading topics to find possible solution to adapt the cities and the people to this global problem.

24

With the climate change it’s important to understand how to use existent part of the cities that actually are unused or not valorised, with the purpose to reactivate them. Located in Bellaria - Igea Marina, a little city in the Emilia Romagna’s coast, the analysis of transport systems, rural elements, historical parts, landscape, nature systems and production is the starting element to give solutions to adapt the city to this problematic that involves all the world.

Plug in How it’s going to be an architecture for post - automated society? That is the starting question for an utopic project in Bologna, close to the train station. With the use of two basic modular elements, one 3D and one planar, the parametric combination of them generate a passing throught this part of the city, giving as final result a multi-level path that host activities for the people. The changing of levels and the continous change of function will be the removal of architectural barriers, so that is the reason for choice of two elements, that gives freedom of space, height and 30functions.
