our MISSION
our VISION
WE CREATE SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS TO END GENERATIONAL POVERTY BY EDUCATING AND EMPOWERING GIRLS AND INSPIRING THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TO JOIN THE GLOBAL MOVEMENT
TO CREATE A MODEL THAT CAN BE ADAPTED AROUND THE WORLD FOR A HOLISTIC GIRLS’ EDUCATION AND EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM TO END GENERATIONAL POVERTY.
We provided meals, food certificates, health insurance and emergency housing assistance for the families who needed a hand up. We gifted reusable shopping bags and masks to families and community members, keeping in mind the fragile environment despite the crisis we were in. Staff went door to door to over 100 families and made sure our girls were safe and loaded them up with books and iPads with headsets so they could listen to stories. We loaned sewing machines and provided jobs for 10 more girls. Girls borrowed guitars and pianos. We did as much as we could to meet each girl’s individual needs within the new context. We know this storm will pass, they always do, but we have learned there is much good you can do in the eye of a hurricane. We did not do this alone. We never do. Our board members, donors, partners and friends were there for us all year long; a constant reminder that we are in this together. The phone calls and emails came in and people opened up their hearts and their wallets. We may have lost income from our social businesses, but you were there for us to make sure the pandemic would not knock us down completely. Instead we smashed the glass ceiling! When their colleges in the USA closed, three Mariposa graduates were welcomed into homes by caring, loving generous families. All three are on track to graduate in 2023. Two more Mariposa graduates received scholarships to the renown UWC, Nicole to Costa Rica and Detiny Esmeralda to Canada. In 2020 we also expanded our model, building a new educational center in a remote community in the mountains outside Jarabacoa. The land was donated by our Honorary Chairwoman Julia Alvarez and her husband Bill Eichner. Julia also published her newest children’s book, Already A Butterfly, a story inspired by the Mariposa girls and the work we do. From January 1 until December 31 we stayed focused on our mission to provide sustainable solutions to end generational poverty by educating and empowering girls and inspiring the international community to join in the global movement. We are doing it again in 2021. One behalf of our board of directors, dedicated staff and our powerful girls and with Immense Gratitude, we hope you read our 2020 annual report and marvel at what a year it was.
Patricia Thorndike Suriel Executive Director, The Mariposa DR Foundation
LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
We began 2020 with energy and hope, but in the end 2020 would bring the world a lot of heartache. The pandemic added to our daily challenges and escalated needs. It intensified the hardships that our girls and their families continue to endure. Still, we remained focused and flexible and persevered.

Julia’s newest book, Already a Butterfly is a gentle picture book tale about self-soothing practices and self-confidence beliefs. This latest work was inspired by her volunteer work in helping to develop the meditation and mindfulness program here at The Mariposa DR Foundation. Young Mari is a very busy butterfly. She’s constantly on the move from flower to flower and planning for migration. In the midst of all of her busyness, Mari asks herself the question, does being so productive make her happy? The only way she feels like a butterfly is by acting like one. Mari discovers that the secret to feeling most like herself is to follow her instincts, focus on her breath and find her quiet place. Under the tutorial of a flower bud, Mari learns to meditate and appreciate her journey as a butterfly. In this children’s book, stunningly illustrated by award-winning artist, Raúl Colón, Alvarez highlights the importance of mindfulness and self-care for children.
“The Mariposa Center for Girls is an oasis of hope in landscape that does not favor triumphant outcomes for the girl child. In the Dominican Republic twelve percent (12%) of all girls marry at fifteen, that “magic” age when a Latina girl supposedly becomes a woman. Forty-two percent (42%) will marry by the time they are seventeen. Teen pregnancy secures a life of poverty. These girls are on the receiving end of a culture of abuse, machismo, and poverty: hours of chores at home, long and unsafe walks to schools with limited resources once they arrive. The pressures and demands are enough to make even the strongest girls break and lose their spirit.” Julia Alvarez Honorary Chairwoman, The Mariposa DR Foundation

CASTILLEJA SCHOOL
In January of 2020, we had the great privilege of hosting Castilleja Community Engaged Learning Group for the 5th year in a row. Castilleja and Mariposa girls worked collaboratively on a number of STEAM projects during their visit. Together they discovered the magic of science as they captured solar rays and baked cookies in their hand crafted solar ovens.
12 | MARIPOSA DR FOUNDATION 2020 ANNUAL REPORT
They also worked in partnership in tinkering with robotics as they developed technical competency. Integrated into all of their projects was a fundamental framework of environmental sustainability and creative repurposing. Together they engineered the design and execution of building a bench on site made completely out of 1,500 eco bottle bricks (a plastic bottle stuffed with single-use plastic trash and repurposed as a building block). In the end, the girls found common ground as they focused on the connections they made between environmental sustainability, social justice, and of course, new found friendships.
WHAT A WONDERFUL WAY TO PREVENT PLASTIC FROM ENTERING THE SEA AND UTILIZING THIS READILY AVAILABLE MATERIAL INTO A BUILDING BLOCK!

GLOBAL CORALITION EVENT In October of 2019, we received a phone call from Global Coralition founder, Angeline Chan, who presented us with their idea of building the largest underwater sculpture (shaped in the form of the Taino goddess of water, Atabey), for coral reef restoration along the north coast of the Dominican Republic. An integral part of their vision was to educate local community members and children about the importance of understanding the link between coral restoration and climate change through the power of art. As we are a highly recognized organization in the community with a deep focus on environmental sustainability and a great appreciation of the arts, Mariposa was a perfect foundation to collaborate with. Our programming for the spring cycle was already focused on identity and cultural heritage, so it made sense to naturally curate our programming around better understanding of the Caribbean Taino culture 14 | MARIPOSA DR FOUNDATION 2020 ANNUAL REPORT
and mythology, while connecting it to science and art. With our holistic educational approach, we were able to seamlessly integrate all of our classes into the theme. Our Musical Director, Tadeu De Marco, together with the Mariposa Musical Group, collaborated on singing and recording a traditional Areito (Taino rhythm) and performing it with handmade traditional instruments. We also hired a local dance instructor, Nina Ruskova, to teach choreography to match the composed Areito. Meanwhile, our sewing group confeccioned their own Taino traditional wear with Upcycled sails and simultaneously created a short presentation based on the knowledge they learned through a history course. Throughout the semester our environmental activist group focused on coral reef degradation and the connections of marine life and the health of the planet. The final culmination included more than 50 Mariposa girls and highlighted their hard work and dedication through a presentation of a performance at a Global Coralition international event.
Originally, we had big plans to replicate the presentation for our 10 year anniversary and combine it with a special 50 year anniversary Earth Day celebration, which was projected to have a full event with activities, educational opportunities for the community, presentations for an international community, but unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we were limited to just this one performance. Regardless, the Mariposa girls who participated in this project completed the coursework with an incredible amount of knowledge of their history and a deeper connection to the environment. By singing, dancing, creating and learning they were part of a larger process of truly understanding their connections to the past and hope for the future.

OUR SOCIAL ENTERPRISES
The very innovation that made the Mariposa DR Foundation unique and successful now makes us exceptionally vulnerable. Since our inception our team has worked to be self-sufficient through the creation of social businesses. The temporary loss of these social businesses right now poses a serious threat to our important work.
CLICK HERE TO READ OUR 2021 CABARETE GUIDE
We created CABARETE: Responsible Tourism and Investment Guide to promote the best of what this small town has to offer. Our goal was to create a platform to talk about our work at The Mariposa DR Foundation to end generational poverty, highlight the local business we love, tell interesting stories and encourage solid investment in the place so many of us from around the world consider home. Ten years later, we can proudly say, we are on a clear path to success. At Mariposa, we focus on educating and empowering girls. We knew that investing in girls would result in the highest returns for Patricia & Jessica Co-founders, The Mariposa DR Foundation
the whole community. We knew that girls who stay in school, get quality health care, play sports, and have a safe space to gather, are more likely to graduate high school, earn income, and have children later, ending the cycle of generational poverty for their families. We also knew that if local businesses were doing well, the community would invest back into the world’s most powerful force for change - our girls. The girls at The Mariposa DR Foundation are unstoppable young women, determined to continue their studies and achieve their goals. Although local businesses were hit hard in the global pandemic, they continue to stand behind their investment in supporting our girls. We could not be more proud to be a part of this amazing community and present this ten year anniversary edition as a tribute to the many businesses that make Cabarete such a wonderful place to visit, work, eat, live and play.

OUR SOCIAL ENTERPRISES
Cabarete Coffee Company started the year with record number sales and continues to prove itself as a major asset for Mariposa DR Foundation. Founded in 2009 by our Executive Director and her family and donated to Mariposa in 2018, the business produces revenue, which reduces Mariposa’s need to outsource food needs and helps make us more self-sustaining. In addition we employ some Mariposa graduates as well as provide internships for girls in our programs. We temporarily closed our shop for the safety of our staff on March 15, 2020. We have been working on plans to reopen in 2021. In the meantime, we have maintained healthcare coverage for our staff and many are employed in different areas of the organization until we reopen.

OUR SOCIAL ENTERPRISES
Always a joy when 11th Hour Racing Ambassador Brock Callen comes to visit and drops off colorful sails to be upcycled.
We are incredibly grateful for the financial support, especially from 11th Hour Racing and The Schmidt Family Foundation, that allowed us to take time to focus on how to safely open our Center and start up programs again in September.
We were proud to show off our upcycled sails to fellow 11th Hour Racing grantee, Richard Feeny from the Community Boating Center of New Bedford Massachusetts.

COVID-19 22 | MARIPOSA DR FOUNDATION 2020 ANNUAL REPORT 22 | MARIPOSA DR FOUNDATION 2020 ANNUAL REPORT
Like everyone around the world, In just a few days in March our world had been turned upside down as we worried about our community’s health, worked to pivot our programs and services, and were stressed where our revenue would come from to support that pivot. Now, one year later, we understand that now more than ever is the time to be innovative, agile and efficient. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the most effective policy response is the one that accounts for how the crisis is experienced by women and girls. With a fierce determination to jump over the hurdles that are in front of us, we are committed to continue to provide outstanding opportunities for girls growing up in poverty. Here is the approach we have taken:
ACCESS TO EDUCATION
Our intimate knowledge of the Mariposa girls and their unique interests was crucial as we gathered materials for their personalized self-care and education packages that we distributed. The bags had everything from hygiene products and toiletries to pertinent health information and their favorite books. We continue to offer distance learning materials and access to iPads as well as ensuring Mariposas have resources to complete remote learning offered by their schools at the elementary, high school, and university levels.
MARIPOSADRFOUNDATION.ORG | 23
We also are focusing on nurturing their mental health, giving the Mariposas journals to write in and offering virtual yoga classes. We have also delivered several musical instruments to the Mariposas’ homes so they can keep practicing and for their enjoyment.
24 | MARIPOSA DR FOUNDATION 2020 ANNUAL REPORT
FOOD SECURITY
We have prioritized feeding families. We set up a food certificate program at the locally owned Supermercado La Rosa. We believe that families need to make food decisions for themselves, while simultaneously supporting a Cabarete owned and run market and injecting money into the local economy. We provided the supermarket with our Upcycled Sails bags to give to our families when they do their purchasing; reminding all of us of the importance of being environmentally conscious during these challenging times. We believe we have saved over 1,000 plastic bags in doing this, at a time when plastic bags have unfortunately become the norm again.
We are also supplying some families in high need with clean water for drinking and offer food for the girls when they are at our Center for programming. MARIPOSADRFOUNDATION.ORG | 25

HEALTH
We educated the Mariposa girls about the importance of social distancing, and model what that looks like, as well as share best practices for staying healthy. Mask compliance is not high in Cabarete, and there is currently a 45% positive rate for Covid tests. This has been an especially scary time for the pregnant women in our community. We are connecting with our Mariposa graduates who are pregnant and offering them support and resources. We are also working in collaboration with CEPROSH to deliver medication to HIV+ community members in Cabarete and Sosua. We are distributing sanitary pads, masks, soap and hand sanitizer.

AUDIOBOOK PROGRAM
We launched a Virtual Volunteer Program with 8 volunteers and 15 girls. The Mariposa International Virtual Volunteer Program concept was spearheaded by Patricia Suriel and Tori Dunn. The idea of this program is to continue to foster that important link of international volunteers that makes our programming so unique, giving individual support to girls virtually, while simultaneously reengaging past volunteers with our mission and vision. Volunteers donated about 114 hours.

As is true in every community, stress levels are incredibly high for our girls and young women as they try to cope with challenges presented by the pandemic Many of us can relate to the need to be near water to center us, to offer us a respite from the world, to give us perspective, and to move our bodies. Now more than ever it is essential for their mental health to get the Mariposa young women safely to the beach and out on the water surfing, SUPing or swimming. This requires significant planning and logistics to make sure Mariposas can remain physically distant in vans and that we have more qualified staff for the much smaller groups, but we are committed to making it happen.

FINCA ALTA GRACIA & MARIPOSA MOUNTAIN SCHOOL 36 | MARIPOSA DR FOUNDATION 2020 ANNUAL REPORT
In January of 2020, we officially acquired the Finca Alta Gracia organic coffee farm through the generosity of Honorary Board member and acclaimed Dominican author, Julia Alvarez and her husband, Bill Eichner. In early 2020, we pushed through doing major construction on the Mariposa Mountain campus and built the initial school structure with the generous funding from RNT Rausch. The silver lining of the pandemic was that we had the time to be able to focus our efforts on this new campus and the development of the farm in general. Thank you to RNT Rausch and Acronis Foundation for helping with construction and Future4Children ffor supporting our teacher training! We have run a few short camps to get things moving, and children in the community were thrilled to have somewhere to come.

PROFILES IN GENEROSITY
VANESSA NADAL & LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA
Supporting the world’s most powerful force for change is a family affair for the Nadal/ Miranda family! For the last 7 years, Vanessa and Lin have supported our work with generous donations, volunteering their time, and making connections through their incredible network. From emceeing our inauguration of the Mariposa Center for Girls in 2014 to facilitating iPad donations for remote schooling during the pandemic, we are so grateful to them, their extended family and their philanthropic team. Vanessa and Lin are strong advocates of our arts programming, as well as supporting our Rise Up Scholarship.
WE ARE SO THANKFUL FOR THEIR CONTINUED SUPPORT.

SPECIAL THANKS
JESSICA MITCHELL EXECUTIVE BOARD TREASURER 2010 - 2020 We are so grateful for Jessica’s time and wisdom for the past decade of serving on the Executive Board. She has witnessed and been integral to the growth of the Foundation from the beginning and has positively impacted the lives of girls and their families throughout Cabarete. We are sorry for her departure, but we know she will always be part of the Mariposa Family. Thank you Jessica!

THE PROMISE THE OFFER OUR PLEDGE
THE KNOW
THE ASK
54 | MARIPOSA DR FOUNDATION 2020 ANNUAL REPORT
We will provide you with an education filled with experiences to last a lifetime. On field trips and through environmental education you will see, smell, and taste things that you never dreamed existed. You will learn skills that will land you jobs and some that will become hobbies. You will play sports, dance, sing and laugh. You will be safe in our home, because it was built to be your home, too. You will learn about other cultures and about your own rich culture, knowledge you can pass to your children one day when you are gown up and if you decide to have them. You will attend a private school where you will stay until you are eighteen years old. We will provide tutors and academic assistance along the way. If you are committed to going to college we will help you to get there. You will learn languages to enable you to communicate with people from around the world. You will serve your community and communities with people you do not know. You will march for peace, for change, and for justice for all. You will be a leader who commands respect. We understand that if your teeth ache or your mother is ill or your siblings are hungry you may not be present, and you need to be present, both physically and mentally. Therefore we will make sure you receive health care and learn to advocate for your health and wellness. If your family needs assistance, financial or emotional, we promise we will look for resources to help them, so that they will also remain determined to help you break the cycle of poverty by receiving a quality education that was not offered to them. We recognize that you cannot do it alone, none of us ever have. Our wings are fashioned by many hands. You began your life many miles behind the starting line, and that was not fair. But this has given you a better understanding of how to be compassionate and patient and we trust you will use this compassion and patience to help others who may stumble or need the wisdom of someone who has had to overcome so many obstacles. You will remain committed and will not give up. You may get used to hearing no, but you will never accept it when it is about your well-being or your own dreams or the well-being and dreams of your community, since we don’t belong to ourselves alone. To achieve these goals, you must show up. You must contribute your time and devotion. Dream big, work hard. You must never forget your cradle, where you came from and that you will share your knowledge and love with all that you come into contact with. You will care for your mother earth and for your mother who birthed you as well as the many mothers and fathers who helped raise you. You will be proud and remain a reader, a problem solver, and a good communicator. You will never stop trying. You will not condone violence or discrimination in any form or intentionally hurt others. You will not judge others as we did not raise you to be judges but to be peacemakers. You will teach others to love the earth and the sea and the air. You are a Mariposa. Your wings were fashioned by many hands. Use them to soar. MARIPOSADRFOUNDATION.ORG | 55

LO PEDIDO
56 | MARIPOSA DR FOUNDATION 2020 ANNUAL REPORT
Seguirás comprometida y no te rendirás. MARIPOSADRFOUNDATION.ORG | 57
