LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Having lived in the Dominican Republic for 30 years, I have learned a great deal about preparing for a disaster. When we prepare for hurricanes, everyone works as a team and time is of the essence. While we are often spared the worst of the storm’s wrath, it takes time to assess and address everything that caused damage and return to normal. Hurricanes pass through quickly, but the aftermath is almost always long term.
The COVID-19 pandemic was, in a way, an epic storm that we weathered, are still continuing to unpack, unboard, clean up and put the pieces back together. As a community leader, I am incredibly proud of the work our team has done, the creative recovery programs we implemented, and the countless lives we saved. Unfortunately, our girls lost their safe space for some of the most critical years of their lives. As with all of the obstacles we as humans face; girls living in poverty were hit the hardest.
Upon fully re-opening the center, I was determined to give the girls back their childhood and make up for as many missed opportunities as possible. In many ways, determined to avoid a possible hurricane within. 2022 was a year of going into overdrive to make up for lost time and I am proud to report astounding results.
Amongst our results, we grew our staff to a total of 40 full and part-time employees between The Mariposa Center for Girls in Cabarete and our second campus - The Mariposa Mountain School at Finca Alta Gracia. The best part is that nearly half of our staff in Cabarete consist of former Mariposa students! Much of our leadership now reflects the Dominican/Haitian population of the young girls and women that we are here to serve. “Educate, Empower, Employ” was a tagline we created a few years back, and we sure are doing just that.
Thank you for being part of our team.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF CHRIS PERRY
Christopher Perry was an educator, scholar, athlete, coach, and a very, very special volunteer. Beginning in the summer of 2013, Chris taught countless young girls to swim and outfitted them with brand new swimsuits, caps, and goggles.
Despite only being able to volunteer with us during the summers, Chris worked tirelessly year-round, seeking corporate and individual donors, playing an instrumental role in building our swim program into what it is today.
Although we lost him in 2022, he left a lasting impression on the organization and his spirit and tremendous heart will be sorely missed but celebrated forever.
In the Spring of 2022, the pool at The Mariposa Center for Girls was dedicated to him with a special sign to acknowledge his love and commitment to all the Mariposa girls. Chris believed in giving to others and sharing his talents. This was evident through all of his friends and family who made generous donations in his memory to support our swim program.
THANK YOU, CHRIS - FOR SHINING YOUR LIGHT AMONGST US AND FOR YOUR HUMBLE, GIVING SPIRIT. YOUR LEGACY LIVES ON AND MANY FUTURE MARIPOSAS WILL BE SWIMMING IN HAPPINESS, THANKS TO YOU.
HEALTH & WELLNESS
At Mariposa, we use a holistic approach to education that highly esteems health and wellness. In 2022, we focused on expanding our team and our offerings to further integrate practices that support healthy minds and bodies into everything we do.
All classes begin with meditation and breathwork to help calm emotions, reduce stress and enhance focus.
With the generous support of The Yoga Effect, all program participants were able to participate in daily yoga classes and we hosted several community workshops for the families. Empowering girls to understand and deepen their connection to their bodies and breath helps to equip them with more confidence, emotional intelligence and resilience.
Being a girl living in extreme poverty is a stressful experience and these daily practices help them stay present, self-regulate and truly immerse themselves in the safe and nurturing environment provided at The Mariposa Center for Girls.
WELLNESS CHECKUPS FOR EVERYONE
Longtime Mariposa volunteer and Cabarete resident, Sherry Herdman helped spearhead our 2022 health fair. Over 200 children and their parents attended for well visits and were offered resources for any necessary follow-up care.
HELPING GIRLS GET THE SLEEP THEY NEED
Sleep can dramatically affect a child’s mental and physical health. Good sleep supports better performance in school, emotional regulation and impulse control. Better sleep also promotes a stronger immune system and the ability to fight off germs, infections and viral illnesses.
Many of our most vulnerable girls were sleep deprived from living in crowded homes and having to share broken down, often pest-infested beds.
With support from families from the International School of Sosua and the BP Lester and Regina John Foundation, we were able to distribute 40 brand new beds with bedding to our girls who were most in need to help them get a better night’s rest.
ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SIXTH GRADE YEAR
Teetering on the age of adolescence, sixth graders are at a major crossroads in their development. In 2022 we restructured our sixth grade programs to meet the unique needs of girls during this critical year.
Our programs serve girls and young women between the ages of 7 and 24. In 2022 we became even more intentional about creating specialized programs specifically tailored for each age group.
Over the past 14 years of working only with girls, we know that enrolling them young is super important, but we also know that sixth grade is a pivotal time. At 11-12 years old, girls start developing into young women. Their bodies change and society starts to view and treat them differently. A deep need for connection and continuity emerges and this is the time when they are most vulnerable and at the highest risk for dropping out of school and extracurricular activities. In 2022 we restructured the sixth grade program to ensure that each Mariposa has extra, focused attention to help them move through this critical phase of their adolescence.
Full day school programs now exist in our community, however, we believe it’s in their best interests to have more individual support. Our solution is to work with and provide scholarships to a private school, Centro de Eseñanza Coral, to create a half day class of sixth grade girls, allowing them the rest of the day to spend at the Mariposa Center for Girls.
Our sixth graders arrive at the Mariposa center by 8am where they have a full breakfast. They spend the entire morning with a small group of consistent adults, fully immersed in experiential learning. In addition to regular academic support and English language classes, environmental science and health and wellness are a key focus. They are out exploring various beaches, snorkeling, keeping weather journals and learning to be citizen scientists. They engage in daily meditation and yoga and have regular health classes where they have free and frequent access to proper medical care, social workers and mental health services.
After a healthy lunch, they get ready at the centershower, do their hair, brush their teeth and head off to school at Centro de Eseñanza Coral for the afternoon until 5pm.
We understand that sixth grade is a landmark year for girls. If they are socially, emotionally and academically solid during this delicate time, they have a stronger foundation for success. They have formed incredible bonds with their peers, created a personalized network of support, excelled in school and have remarkably consistent attendance. After just one year, the results speak for themselves.

STEAM EDUCATION
In 2022 we expanded our Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math programming. Fifth and sixth grade Mariposa girls had more than 50 hours of coding classes!
Weather journaling was also a new activity. Girls are disproportionately affected by climate change. Studying and discussing weather patterns is a great way for them to deepen their scientific understanding of how climate impacts their everyday lives, how to predict weather and what to do during a weather emergency. This is particularly important for all girls around the world who live in environmentally vulnerable areas.
MARIPOSAS VOLANDO
A “Volando” is a Mariposa girl who has graduated from high school and aged out of daily programs at the Center. She now has access to continued support from the organization with higher education, learning a trade, finding employment or starting a business.
Over the past five years, the need to expand our programs to include specialized support for young adult Mariposas has become evident. This speaks to the tremendous success of our programs as the first generation of independent, empowered young women who are delaying marriage and childbirth has arrived.
When The Mariposa DR Foundation was founded in 2009, there was no high school in Cabarete. Most girls were not making it past the 8th grade, very few were enrolling in high school and almost none were attending university. We’re happy to report that we’ve changed that.
Currently 100% of Mariposa girls enroll in high school and 100% have remained on track to graduate on time. These young women are enrolling in the best universities across the Dominican Republic, and several
are traveling all over the world to pursue higher education. This is unprecedented.
With these amazing success stories, comes great responsibility on our part to ensure they have everything they need to blaze their own paths. This includes assistance with scholarships, securing visas, travel expenses, computers, supplies, new wardrobes for those relocating to cold climates, resume building workshops, reference letters and much, much more.
Fernanda began working as a junior summer camp counselor and administrative assistant at the Mariposa Foundation in 2012 at 16 years old. She has worn many hats at the organization and has risen through the ranks to become an integral part of the current leadership team.
Naomi started Mariposa programs at 7 years old. Terrified of the water, she slowly overcame her fear and became one of the star swimmers and surfers. She is now a certified lifeguard with years of experience in water safety training.
Vivianna is a 2019 Mariposa graduate. With a passion for the culinary arts, she is an integral part of our powerhouse kitchen staff, helping with procurement, maintenance and teaching cooking classes to younger girls.
Fabiola is a 2022 Mariposa Graduate. Born and raised in Cabarete, Fabiola started programs at age 10. Having learned how to swim at the Mariposa Center, Fabiola is the first Haitian certified lifeguard in the Dominican Republic, and she was the only woman in her open water lifesaving course.

HAPPENING AT THE MARIPOSA CENTER FOR GIRLS
We welcomed 25 new girls into programs! With a generous donation from Tobias Gilberger, we began the renovation of our teaching kitchen into the Obuntu Culinary School. We prepared and served more than 50,000 healthy meals and snacks for all of our girls, staff and many volunteers.
Composted over 30,000 pounds of food scraps and other organic waste!
Welcomed back international students and visitors!
With support from The Tea Collection we completely revamped our permaculture gardens.
Secured $350,000 in scholarships for Mariposa girls to attend local and international institutions.
ALREADY A BUTTERFLY: EMPOWERMENT & ACTIVISM
The Butterfly Extravaganza was a spectacular performance created by the Mariposa girls in partnership with Blackspace and Paperhand Puppet Intervention. With support from the US Embassy in the Dominican Republic, the guest artists worked intensely with the girls for five weeks to produce an amazing show inspired by one of author Julia Alvarez’s latest works, Already a Butterfly.
The girls wrote and produced original music, learned to walk on stilts, created costumes, giant paper mache masks and art installations and choreographed movement for the performance.
Grammy nominated artists and mother and son, Nnenna and Pierce Freelon, joined us for the finale where we performed the show for local students, families and special guests.
Special thank you to Nina Kameroruskova (Ninafrika Dance School), Nina Merkoci and Marianne Santilli who were instrumental in our music and performing arts program throughout 2022.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM
Empowering girls to be champions of the environment has been a core focus of our program since Mariposa was founded. We approach everything we do with sustainability in mind and promote experiential scientific learning through nature exploration. 2022 was full of hiking, snorkeling, gardening, beach cleanups and visits to our mountain campus on a farm in the hills above Jarabacoa.
IN 2022 WE:
• Prevented more than 37,000 pounds of food scraps and garden waste from going into landfills. Why does this matter? Organic matter in landfills creates methane gas, a greenhouse gas that exacerbates the climate change crisis. By teaching our girls about composting and being diligent about our practices, we are empowering them to find their unique voice and lead in agriculture and supply chain resiliency.
• Built an eco-brick structure as a gift to our sister school, 3 Mariposas Montessori, using more than 2,000 pounds of plastic trash. Eco-bricks are single-use plastic soda bottles stuffed with compacted plastic trash (bags, food wrappers, etc.) that can be used to build a variety of functional structures.
• Organized several cleanups, resulting in the removal of more than 1,000 pounds of plastic from local waterways and beaches.
SPECIAL THANK YOU TO OUR ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM SPONSORS
FROM MOUNTAIN TO SEA
Finca Alta Gracia is our organic farm, high in the mountains of the Dominican Republic, above the city of Jarabacoa. This magical property was gifted to us by our honorary chairwoman, Julia Alvarez. It spans about 230 acres, offering incredible environmental stewardship and educational opportunities for Mariposa girls from mountain to sea.
Cabarete staff traveled to Jarabacoa on numerous occasions throughout the year to work with students at the Mariposa Mountain School, offering English classes, music lessons, and helping to plan and prepare holiday celebrations.
As a part of our environmental program, the older Mariposa girls in Cabarete were able to travel up to the farm to experience and learn about the different mountain terrain, the community, and about the many crops we grow on the farm including coffee, macadamia, citrus fruits, bamboo and more.
INAUGURATING THE MARIPOSA MOUNTAIN SCHOOL AT FINCA ALTA GRACIA
In 2022 we welcomed more than 30 international visitors from the Acronis Foundation and RNT Rausch for the inauguration of the Mariposa Mountain School at Finca Alta Gracia. Our visitors provided support in helping us build a first-class educational center at the site and brought computers and backpacks filled with school supplies for the local students.
The children at the Mountain School, with help from our staff in Cabarete, prepared a festive performance to showcase their community. It was a very special day where our supporters were able to meet the families of the community and see the impact of their generous donations.
FURTHERING OUR IMPACT WITH SOCIAL BUSINESSES
Cabarete Coffee Company is a small, local café owned and operated by The Mariposa DR Foundation. Serving up fresh roasted organic specialty coffee drinks, breakfast all day, sandwiches, salads, and more, 100% of the proceeds from this bustling little shop go directly to support our programs. In 2022, Cabarete Coffee Company brought in $100,000 of revenue for the organization. Decked out with posters and facts about Mariposa, it also serves as a community and tourist hub where people from all over the world stop in for a coffee or a meal, and leave champions for girls’ education and empowerment. The shop also serves as a training ground for select Mariposa program participants interested in pursuing a career in hospitality.
2022 marked the 12th edition of the Cabarete Guide magazine. Written, photographed and published by the staff and a small group of dedicated volunteers, the CABARETE: Responsible Tourism and Investment Guide is full of stunning images, serving as the most comprehensive guide to the local area. With more than 100,000 readers and advertising support from 30 local businesses, the guide continues to be a great fundraising and marketing tool for the organization.
After years of being unhappy with the options for books for early readers, the Mariposa team decided it was time to make our own. The Mariposa Primeros Lectores Series was created with the intent to help new readers excel by seeing their language and culture represented in the text and imagery.
The 10 book series is an innovative, Dominican-centered approach that uses a fun and easy approach to learning to read by using familiar words and phrases that students see in their daily lives. The books also come with a corresponding deck of memory cards for a fun, interactive supplement to the curriculum. The entire project was designed and written by a group of Mariposa students, staff, and volunteers.
We proudly debuted the series with a launch at the largest public school in Cabarete. Joined by special visitors from the Ministry of Education and the local community, we were able to generate excitement for the series and coordinate distribution efforts to schools throughout the area.
We distributed 10,000 books and 1,000 sets of corresponding flashcards to local schools and partner organizations and a select group of Mariposa graduates led teacher training workshops on how to implement the new resources into their classrooms.
The enthusiasm around The Mariposa Primeros Lectores Series has been contagious and we know the impact will be profound.

In-kind donations are charitable gifts of much needed goods and services. When a nonprofit organization receives an in-kind contribution, the charity records the gift as revenue. To determine the amount of revenue, the charity must value the in-kind contribution at its fair market value on the date of the donation. Mariposa received many in-kind donations this year including academic/office supplies, tuition scholarship funds, shipping services, food and clothing.
