1. Densify: • Densify the three house lots by increasing the number of dwelling units in each plot, turning the originally single occupancy terrace house into a two-storey dual or triple occupancy with shared amenities, external and semi external areas; the dwelling area

per-person should be aimed at 35- 45m2. • To translate the increased density by means of schematic spatial and massing configurations.
2. Intensify: • Intensify the neighbourhood’s urban and environmental characteristics by proposing shared facilities for the inhabitants, environmentally attuned landscape strategies (such as green roof, urban farm, rainwater APAR TMENT T WO

Design Overview: Building upon the scheme you have developed in Part 1: Living Neighbourhood, you will continue working individually and further refine your design ideas for 4 MacArthur Place North, Carlton. Working with a specific client, you will extend and/or transform the original building, a single-storey Edwardian terrace

house, into an adaptable multigenerational dwelling. Drawing upon your design focus from Part 1: Living Neighbourhood (architectural, environmental, or urban civic systems) you will develop your design using a combination floor plans, sections, photomontage, perspectives, diagrams, and physical models
Design Brief: Your client for this project is a multigener-

ational household. The household consists of a working couple with 1 child and the grandparents from one side of the family. The couple purchased the 2-bedroom, 1-study, 1-bathroom terrace house with a substantial financial support from the grandparents who have retired and would like to ‘downsize’ from their suburban house to live closer to their children and grandchild, as well as to Carlton’s abundant urban amenities (shops, clinic, parks, civic places such as library, museum and gallery, etc.). The new house will need to accommodate both the core family and the grandparents, allowing for a balance mix of interaction, independence, and privacy. Below are the specific design tasks for this project: 1. To create a compact, adaptable, and environmentally attuned 2 storey, 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom residence, including an adaptable room with a secondary access; 2. To create a better interaction between indoor and outdoor areas through a creation of a small courtyard and other design strategies to bring light and air flows into the house; 3. To activate the laneway access by creating a secondary access, facilitating bicycle parking; 4. To create a contemporary architectural tectonic and living space respectful of its urban and architectural context by complementing the historical built fabric of this iconic heritage precinct of Melbourne. To address this you have two options: 1. To retain the existing core parts of the Victorian and Edwardian terraces on the site and create a contemporary reinterpretation of the residential style/type or extension/additional unit at the back of the site; 2. To redevelop the whole site anew while taking into consideration the heritage streetscape, the urban morphology, and existing architectural pattern and materiality of the area
