The Marist School Blue & Gold Athletics Circle was established in 2003 to honor those who have made outstanding contributions to Marist School athletics. Selection takes into consideration personal excellence in athletics, academics, and service to Marist School and the community.

Greg Appleton ’80 humbly began his celebrated career in baseball while at Marist School. He was awarded Most Valuable Player his senior year while also participating in Emmaus and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Greg holds a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s in sports management from the University of Georgia. He is currently in his 22nd season as the head baseball coach at Columbus State University. He holds the record for the winningest coach in Columbus State baseball history, was named the National Coach of the Year in 2002, the South Atlantic Region Coach of the Year in 2007, and the Southeast Regional Coach of the Year in 2018.

Jon Coffman ’92

In addition to playing on Marist School’s varsity boys baseball and basketball teams, Jon Coffman ’92 also found time to serve as a peer leader and in student government. In 1996, Jon graduated from Washington and Lee University where he was a three-year starter for the Generals basketball team and captain of the 1995-1996 squad. He still holds three school records, including the mark for most three-pointers (7) and free throws (18) made in a game. While at W & L, Jon received the Alumni Basketball Award for his contributions to the success of his team. He is currently the head basketball coach at Purdue University Fort Wayne. His team was recognized as the 2015- 2016 Summit League of the Year, and, in that year, Jon led the Mastodons to the Summit League Championship.

Felicia Frazier ’05

Tennis

In each of the four years she attended Marist School, Felicia Frazier ’05 earned a letter in varsity girls tennis and helped her team win the state title. She also joined the Habitat for Humanity student build and was a member of Mosaic Club. Upon graduating, Felicia attended Temple University where she continued to play tennis, leading her team to the Atlantic 10 Conference championship while serving as captain. She currently lives in Riverdale, Ga. and works as a flight attendant.

Kathleen Hersey ’08

Swimming

While still a student at Marist School, Kathleen Hersey ’08 competed in the 2007 Pan American Games where she won four gold medals. At Marist, she set national high school records in the 100-yard butterfly and the 200- yard individual medley, participated in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and served on student council. During her two years of collegiate competition at the University of Texas at Austin, Kathleen was an 11-time Big 12 Champion and 7-time All-American. She is a former American record holder in the 200-meter butterfly and held six individual records and four relay team records at The University of Texas. Kathleen is a two-time Olympian, competing in 2008 and 2012 for Team USA. In 2015, she was inducted into the Georgia Swimming Hall of Honor. She currently works as director of development for The University of Texas at Austin.


Marvin Key ’78

During his time at Marist School, Marvin Key ’78 clearly exhibited a talent for leadership and athleticism. He earned the title of Most Valuable Player for basketball and track & field in 1977 and 1978. He was named Track Man of the Year in 1978. Marvin was also a member of the National Honor Society and the Bus Boys Traveling Ensemble. He attended Clemson University where he continued to play basketball. He served his team as co-captain during the 1982 season and named to the All- Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Men’s Basketball team. He currently lives in Dallas, Texas with his family where he works as an entrepreneur and is a chartered financial analyst.

Andrea McGuirt ’07 rightfully earned positions on the Class AAAA First Team in 2007, the Metro Girls Team in 2007, and the All-State Second Team in 2008. Her hard work garnered her the women’s basketball Coach’s Award at Marist and the Naismith Prep Player of the Year Award. Andrea also served her fellow students as a peer leader while at Marist. She attended Indiana University, where she continued to play women’s basketball, serving as captain during her senior year. She also joined Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority at Indiana. Andrea was named Scholar Athlete of the Year three seasons in a row, and received the 2011 Scholastic Achievement Award and the Women’s Basketball Highest Team GPA Award. She is currently enrolled at Harvard Business School and works in the finance industry.

Hall McKinley ’06

Soccer

In his senior year, Hall McKinley ’06 capped a successful soccer career by leading his team to the first state championship win in Marist School men’s soccer history. He served as team captain for two seasons, earned the Atlanta JournalConstitution high school boys soccer Player of the Year, was a four year letter winner, and scored 39 goals during his time at Marist. Hall attended Berry College, graduating in 2010 with a degree in business marketing. He continued playing soccer in college where he was named an All-American Honorable Mention in 2008, earned Most Valuable Player of the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament in 2007, and was a member of NAIA top-ranked teams in 2007 and 2008. Hall currently works as an inventory analyst for CrossLink Orthopaedics.

Matt Miller ’97 Football

In addition to serving as a peer leader and earning a place on Marist School’s honor roll, Matt Miller ’97 also netted recognition on the Atlanta JournalConstitution Super 11, was ranked #7 linebacker in the country by SuperPrep magazine, and was the number one blue chip linebacker in the Southeast. He was also named the DeKalb County Player of the Year and secured a spot on the All-State first team. Matt attended Georgia Tech where he played football, including on the ACC All-Academic team. He currently lives in Atlanta with his family where he works as an insurance agent and volunteer youth football coach. Matt has been a volunteer football coach for 13 years at Marist and helped start the internet broadcasts for school football games in 2002 and 2003.


Bryan Steed ’03

Baseball, Football

Bryan Steed ’03 set the standard for a well-rounded student during his time at Marist School. He was voted Most Athletic in his senior class and earned two-way player honors from the DeKalb Touchdown Club. Bryan served as men’s baseball team captain his senior year, earned all-region honors in 2002, and played for Junior Team Georgia in 2002. His team won the Junior Sunbelt Classic in Oklahoma, where he received all-tournament honors. Bryan also participated in Young Life, Symphonic Band, and the Habitat for Humanity student build. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he continued playing baseball, earning the Athletic Director’s Scholar Athlete Award. Bryan currently works in commercial construction. He lives in Atlanta with his wife, Kristin, and children, Evie and Sam.

Cooper Taylor ’08

Football, Track & Field

Cooper Taylor ’08 was a member of both the football and track & field teams at Marist School. He was a two-time All-State and All-County selection and also earned three varsity letters in football. After graduating from Marist, Cooper played football at Georgia Tech before transferring to the University of Richmond. His time at Richmond was peppered with accolades including selection to multiple All-America teams, CAA Football Scholar- Athlete of the Year, and The Touchdown Club of Richmond Division I National Defensive Back of the Year. Cooper was selected by the New York Giants in the fifth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He earned a master’s in business administration from Indiana University and is currently an investment analyst at the University of Michigan Investment Office.

Each of these talented individuals has shown exemplary dedication to Marist School athletics, and their accomplishments beyond Marist are admirable as well. We are grateful that they are part of our Marist community and pleased to welcome them into the Blue & Gold Athletics TOMMY MARSHALL AT H L E T I C D I R E C TO R


Service Award Terry Blish When Coach Terry Blish took over coaching Marist’s swimming and diving team, the school was considering eliminating the program. Today the team has a legacy of 14 state championships, 84 All- American swimmers and divers, and 62 Academic All- Americans. Coach Blish has been awarded the Georgia Swimming Coach of the Year five times, been a finalist for National High School Swim Coach of the Year, and honored with Marist’s Frank P. Hagan Coach’s Award. After more than 40 years at Marist School, Coach Blish retired in 2018. While he is not an alumnus, Coach Blish has always felt a part of the Marist family. In fact, Coach Blish met his wife, Pamela, at Marist in 1979 when she was a substitute teacher. Reflecting on his time at Marist, Coach Bliss remarked, “We’ve often told our athletes this about Marist swimming and diving: first you become part of it, then it becomes part of you, no matter where you go, for the rest of your life. I’m beginning to understand that now!”

Ron Elgin Coach Ron Elgin’s tenure at Marist School is punctuated with multiple awards including: Assistant Football Coach of the Year in 1987, 1988, and 1994; All-State Baseball Coach in 1991 and 1997; Georgia Dugout Club in 1998; DeKalb County Baseball Coach of the Year in 1999; DeKalb County All-Star Head Baseball Coach in 2003; President of the Georgia Dugout Club in 2004; and inductee into the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame in 2013. In 2010, as assistant baseball coach, he helped lead Marist’s baseball team to a state championship. Coach Elgin attended West Georgia College and earned his master’s degree at Georgia State University.
