The Baltic Exchange The Baltic Exchange is a membership organisation that has spent more than 250 years at the heart of the global maritime business. Originally a meeting place for owners and brokers, its members are still a vital component in world trade, arranging for the ocean transportation of dry-bulk goods including iron ore, bauxite, grain, sugar and forest products. Two-thirds of the world’s open-market bulk cargo is handled at some stage by members of the Baltic Exchange. Members also deal with wet bulk, including crude oil and refined products, chemicals, LNG, containers, special projects and the sale and purchase of ships. Membership of the Baltic Exchange is not limited to shipbrokers, but includes shipowners and operators, financial institutions, maritime lawyers, insurers, educators and, more recently, energy traders and commodity houses. It is an international community encompassing the majority of world shipping interests and committed to a strict code of business conduct.
The Baltic Magazine
Today, the Baltic Exchange is the world’s only independent source of maritime market information for the trading and settlement of physical and derivative contracts. A panel of international shipbrokers provides daily assessments on 42 wet and dry routes, and contributes to weekly sale and purchase and demolition indices. These independent freight market assessments are used as a basis for settling Forward Freight Agreements (FFAs) and other “over the counter” products, a market worth some $50 billion per annum that is rapidly attracting new players to the freight marketplace.
The quarterly editions of this official magazine promote the shipping industry to an elite readership throughout the world. Each issue presents expert opinion from leaders in the industry, highlighting the latest industry developments, analysing their implications and forecasting trends for the future. It forms an essential information source for the shipping industry, providing statistical information and clear industry insight.
