Bosa Waterfront Centre SENIOR DESIGNER Location: Program: With: Status:
Vancouver, British Columbia Mixed Use Base, Office Tower Kohn Pedersen Fox Construction
The design of the Bosa Waterfront Centre reflects the unique qualities of its site, its degree of connectivity and accessibility, and a relationship to its architectural context and the adjacent Vancouver Harbour. The deep facade reinterprets the sculpted quality of the historic masonry buildings nearby, creating a dynamic dialogue. The curved glass walls ripple gently throughout the building’s height, the effect becoming more pronounced as the tower reaches to the sky. A compelling, sculpted relationship between the ground plane and tower is apparent with terraced landscaping and an interior lobby that emulates the flow and movement of the exterior.

6000 McKay SENIOR DESIGNER Location: Program: With: Status:
Burnaby, British Columbia Mixed Use Base, Residential Tower Kohn Pedersen Fox Construction
The signature piece within the emerging Metrotown district of Burnaby, this residential tower provides generous outdoor space for every unit while seriously densifying its surroundings. The genesis of the design was a study of the scale of the traditional suburban bungalows which can be found mere blocks from the development. Keeping the mass constant the block was pushed and pulled to create a package which could be stacked in a metabolist fashion into this dramatic stepping tower. The stepping form is expressed again at the podium with a richer, solidified material palette.

Crystal City Apartments SENIOR DESIGNER Location: Program: With: Status:
Arlington, Virginia Mixed Use Base, Residential Tower Kohn Pedersen Fox Competition
Given the challenge of an existing foundation with limited structural capacity, mass timber is employed primarily for its light weight, thereby enabling a taller building with more rentable area. The inherent aesthetics of the material and sustainable virtues are also embraced. The overall building form is broken up infusing the building with community garden space and providing each unit with access to the outdoors.

Z3 Tower DESIGNER Location: Program: With: Status:
Beijing, China Mixed Use Base, Office Tower Kohn Pedersen Fox In Design
Z3 will be distinguished by its clarity. The simple chamfered form and textured facade offer a marked contrast to much of the new building in China, which often favors formal opulence over material and tectonic refinement. At the tower’s base the shingled wall peels away creating integral canopies and revealing the pristine lobby spaces within. The characteristics of carving and texture finds their way into the interior with bold forms and subtle material treatments.

Guizhou Super Tower SENIOR DESIGNER Location: Program: With: Status:
Guiyang, China Super Mixed Use Kohn Pedersen Fox Competition
The neo-metabolist design begins with conceiving of optimal planning modules for each of the primary program types in the mixed use tower: office, hotel, and residential. The arrangement of parts is then manipulated to strategically insert public space in the form of terraces, sky gardens, and atria. The tower is then finely tuned so that it’s stepping form responds to the existing context and the hyper mixed use nature of the masterplan.

Sai Kung Villas SENIOR DESIGNER Location: Program: With: Status:
Sai Kung, Hong Kong Residential (4 Villas) Kohn Pedersen Fox City Approvals
While still officially within Hong Kong, with views of the sea and beautiful hiking Sai Kung feels like a remote natural setting. These villas are designed to maximize those views and provide a private oasis. Rich natural materials are used throughout including textured granite, terracotta, bronze, and plentiful plantings. The relative density of the site - this is still Hong Kong after all - is offset by the simplicity and clarity of the building forms.

NATO Headquarters DESIGNER Location: Program: With: Status:
Brussels, Belgium Government / International Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Complete 2017
Envisioned as two hands coming together in a sign of unity, this new headquarters houses an alliance made up of 28 member nations and 19 partner nations in a fortress of glass that is over 250,000 square meters - nearly the size of the Pentagon. While only 7 stories, it’s scale by all other measures is staggering. The building system needs to meet the demands of embassy level security, modern flexible office space, a comprehensive conference center, and common amenity space. An addition design challenge was that the building needs to be able to adapt to the shifting demands of a always changing geopolitical world.

Hanzheng Walk SENIOR DESIGNER Location: Program: With: Status:
Wuhan, China Super Mixed Use Kohn Pedersen Fox In Design
Wuhan is an inland Chinese city with a vibrant urban landscape and history. Its rapid rate of growth risks loosing that rich texture to anonymous new development and artificial nostalgia. This 40 acre masterplan strives to preserve the texture of the winding alleys and masonry buildings that define the historic parts of the city but to do so in a way that is decidedly forward looking. Responding to the hot climate the narrow streets and ample shading provide passive means of cooling for city dwellers.

62 acres positioned within a mile of downtown along the South Branch of the Chicago River. Challenging site constraints had in the past made development impractical. We worked to resolve those issues of access and to the develop the matrix for a vibrant mixed use community that would feel distinct from yet contiguous with Chicago’s urban traditions. The masterplan delivers moments of high density, carefully scaled residential communities, an active innovation district along the river, all punctuated by various scales of opens space.

The primary programmatic elements - Culture, Civic, and Commerce - drive the formation of the entire masterplan. Each of these primary programmatic elements become an organizing axis, centered on the tower and radiating out through the site. The result is a intense mixed use neighborhood that is shaped by the character of its surroundings. A cohesive, but flexible aesthetic and tectonic language is manipulated at various scales to shape the form of the different buildings types.

By imbuing the shell with depth and challenging the solidity of the pure form architectural concepts of light, space and aperture were explored. These spatial qualities set this piece apart from not only the artist in the field but the other architects as well. The final piece was recognized for it’s innovative design, and also for the manner it which it pushed the limits of digital fabrication at the time. It was selected by the exhibit organizers to be sold at private auction to benefit local charities.

Composed of delicate, textured, reflective elements, the facade panels create unique lighting and material effects that resonate with the brand’s fashion. The shimmering texture from afar reveals high level of craft, delicacy, and material richness as it is approached. This intricate, non-repeating facade pattern is achieved through an inventive mathematical system allowing the 60 unique panels to be fabricated efficiently. The result is a facade with a pattern that exists in the space between order and randomness. Demonstrating the powerful resonance with the brand, this design, and derivative variations, has now been employed at many Michael Kors stores around the world.

In Charybdis STUDENT WORK With: Program: Critic: Team:
Penn Design Oceanic Research Station Cecil Balmond Nam il Joe & Laura Lo
After modeling the fluid forces conveying plastics to particular patches on the surface of the oceans we built algorithms to describe how those forces would translate through its depths. The plastics are used as a building material to create a matrix within which research pods can be positioned. Intensive properties like pressure, temperature and light have a material impact on the quality and nature of the space of this underwater structure. The gradient of light slides towards total darkness between 0 and 700 meters, the ekman spiral twists between 0 and 100 meters, and the gradient of plastic particles manifests and the recedes between 0 and 30 meters. These forces shape the form of an inverted skyscraper that plunges 350 meters into the oceans depths balanced by gravity and buoyancy.

Topology driving typology, a study of how one might subtly change the nature of space to yield a subsequent change in the function of that space. Gradients of change lead to critical thresholds that trigger changes in use - shifting from hotel to residential configurations. The system that emerges is cellular by nature, yet interrupted by veins of public space at various scales and intensities. The nature of these restaurant and bar spaces is driven by their location within the system. The final formation is a reflection of a field of change.

Cloud Culture INDEPENDENT Location: Program: Partner:
New York, New York Outdoor Event Space David Mulder
As social networking sites had just officially taken over our lives, this speculative design is a reaction to the abundance of personal data stored in the digital cloud that is readily available to anyone or anything that seeks to access it. By constantly combing data to extract the thoughts, identities and feelings of the users of the space, the pavilion can animate itself to reflect their collective sentiments. This yields a dynamic architectural space that provides an ever shifting palette of sensory experience. The result is a fluid relationship in which the users of the space and the space itself are suspended in a feedback loop, each influencing the mood of the other. Cloud culture, therefore, is the dynamic manifestation of the connections and sentiments of the network of users within the space.

On Growth and Form INDEPENDENT RESEARCH With: Critic:
Penn Design & Pratt Institute Various
The physical properties of matter make it innately imbued with the potential for morphogenesis. This is constant across all scales of the material world from the elemental forces within an atom to the geologic forces of plate tectonics. I’ve carried out a series abstract studies endeavoring to visualize the forces at the root of various processes of formation. Through sequential and continuous interactions built upon simple rules, complex form can emerge without the addition of outside input. Forces build upon themselves sequentially, yielding complex solutions which would be impossible to conceive by conventional means. Because of the dynamic nature of this process a finished end is not the objective. Rather a continuously fluctuating landscape of solutions is generated.
