Dunedin Budgeting Advisory Service (DBAS) is a free and confidential service who works with families and individuals in the greater Ōtepoti area, empowering and supporting people with finances.

Assistant Manager of DBAS, Charlotte Whitaker, says auditing your finances every six to twelve months is a good time frame to stay on top of bills such as those nasty unwanted subscription fees, making financial wellbeing seem a little more possible.

“Go through all areas of where you spend money and see if you are still getting the best deal on your insurance, power, internet and home utilities. Ask yourself if you are still using that monthly gym membership.”

Charlotte suggests each time you spend money, write it down and minus it from what’s in your bank account.

“Cashflow can help keep you on track and highlight areas where you can cut back on if needed. Luxuries such as coffees and television subscriptions add up.”

Speaking with a financial mentor is another strategy to be well on your way to financial wellbeing. “It’s free and confidential, plus we won’t tell you what decision to make. We can give you options around your own situation and will support you with whatever you decide.”

Charlotte makes a point to mention there are very few people she has worked with who do not have options.

“Most people can work towards creating a life of financial wellbeing with steps in place.”

If you are preparing for retirement, financial stability may appear daunting. “It helps not to overthink it, as long as you are doing all you can now, that’s all you can do,” Charlotte says.

“Many people in their 40s and upwards live by themselves – often due to relationship breakdowns.”

There is the option to have a border to share costs with you is one way to help if you may be in this situation.

“This can be temporary, just to give a bit of a boost to the income. It will also be helping someone else out – giving them a safe place for a while and you never know where this can lead!

“I have had clients in a situation who are now best friends, another who are now married and a border who has now employed their ‘landlord’,” she says.
