Do you experience self-doubt? Do you constantly feel like you're ‘faking it’? Do you fear being exposed as an imposter? Registered clinical psychologist and chief executive of Umbrella Wellbeing Dr Dougal Sutherland says that those experiencing feelings of self-doubt and inadequacy are not alone. Imposter syndrome is a common phenomenon that sets people back in terms of both personal and professional growth. “Typically, the term ‘imposter syndrome’ is used in work places to refer to the feeling that you’re not as a good as others and have only achieved success by ‘luck’ rather than your own skills, and that you’re going to be ‘found out’ for who you really are,” he says. Dougal says that the sense of being a failure and not good enoughc an easily go beyond a work context, especially for seniors as they approach retirement and reflect on their working life and career. “Seniors might be plagued by thoughts about has their work really been satisfying or made a difference and that others seem to have done it better,” he says. “This sense of comparing yourself negatively with others might also flow into other areas of life such as levels of retirement savings or achievements of children and grandchildren.” For some, discussing mental health is a challenge in itself. Today, conversation and openness around mental wellbeing is far more normalised than it was in years gone by. Dougal says, “Taking care of mental wellbeing is crucial for seniors, but maybe a particular challenge for seniors who may not be used to thinking about or talking about their mental health. “Thinking about wellbeing as a holistic system including mental, physical, social, and spiritual health and doing something every day in each for each of the four areas can be a good place to start. “Be brave and talk to others about these feelings. People are often surprised about how common this experience is and that others have similar feelings of self-doubt.”

Modern developments and changes in culture and workforce have prompted increased understanding around mental phenomena such as imposter syndrome. “We’ve come to understand it more as our workforce has changed,” Dougal says. “Imposter syndrome is more common amongst women and people from minority groups, perhaps because they mentally compare themselves to the majority and notice feeling different. “As women have taken up their place in the workforce, particularly at higher levels of management and in high power jobs, there has been increasing awareness that many feel like they are fake and not good enough.” From loneliness and grief to altering physical and mental wellbeing, those in the golden years of life may navigate a variety of challenges. Imposter syndrome can emerge from these changes. “Other problems associated with ageing could add to the sense of not being as good as others. For example, someone might think that other seniors have better health or more friends than they do, which can potentially add to feelings of sadness or loneliness,” Dougal says. Stigma around mental health and wellbeing impacts everyone, regardless of their age. Instead of confusing signs of say anxiety, depression, and the like with ‘just getting older’, we must protect and embrace our senior communities. “Educating seniors about mental health and wellbeing and encouraging them to find words they are comfortable with to discuss the topic is a good start,” Dougal says. “Many seniors may not have grown up talking about these topics so giving them knowledge and understanding can be very powerful. “Providing wellbeing services to retirement homes and villages could also be a useful avenue as it allows seniors to learn together.”

Retirement years have the potential to be some of the best years of our lives. Ensuring that you have legal matters arranged as you want them can add to the quality of these years and provide peace of mind not only for you but also your family. Wills and Enduring Powers of Attorney Adam and Lauren thought they were prepared. They had wills prepared several years ago. What they didn’t know was that when they got married after signing their wills, their marriage cancelled their wills and new ones were required. Adam passed away. Lauren discovered that Adam was deemed to have died without a will and the Administration Act determined who the beneficiaries of his estate would be. Adam had wanted to leave everything to Lauren but without a valid will this was not to be.

We recommend regularly reviewing your wills and doing this with a lawyer who will be able to identify and resolve issues you may not have even known were there. The new Trusts Act 2019 has an impact on wills and we recommend bringing your will into line with this new legislation if you have not already done so. While dealing with Adam’s estate, Lauren was advised to review her enduring powers of attorney (EPAs). These are the documents that can give someone else authority to act on your behalf if you lose the ability to make decisions for yourself. It is important to have someone you trust, who knows you well and will make decisions based on what they know you would want. Without EPAs a court application might be required if you are ever unable to make your own decisions. It is worth noting that most retirement communities require you to hold current EPAs as a condition of entry. Lauren’s lawyer was able to review her old EPAs and update these to appoint someone other than Adam to act for her. They were also able to review the conditions Lauren wanted placed on her attorneys and how they could act.

The Bank of Mum and Dad With ever increasing house prices it is increasingly common for children and grandchildren to come calling for loans. But what happens when that loan unintentionally becomes a gift? Peter and Mandy are heading into their retirement years and have carefully saved to enjoy this time. They don’t have a lot, but they have enough. They have a son Dennis and a daughter Claire. Dennis has just bought his first home with the help of Peter and Mandy. They lent him $50,000 to enable him to obtain the balance of funds required from his bank. Peter signed a form for Dennis’s bank stating the $50,000 was a gift – a common requirement for lenders. Peter and Mandy were not concerned; Dennis had agreed with them informally that he would repay this over a ten-year period with a modest interest charge. As is often the case, situations change. Dennis fell in love and married Sandra two years after the funds were loaned. Sandra did not share a good relationship with Peter and Mandy and loan repayments stopped. Peter and Mandy depleted their retirement savings faster than expected and now they need at least some of the loan to be repaid. Sandra and Dennis now claim the loan was a gift.

There are multiple ways to ensure you can help your family while still protecting you as lender. The first step is a chat with your lawyer. Residential care subsidies After the stress of dealing with Dennis’s loan which was declared a gift, Peter’s health declined and he required residential care. Peter and Mandy made an application for a residential care subsidy for Peter as they were within the current asset limits to do this. Unfortunately their gifting was reviewed and the loan to Dennis was considered to be gifting that was over and above the limits allowed. His application was declined. It is important to be aware of the gifting limit of $27,000 per year up until five years prior to making an application for a residential subsidy. This figure is the total for you and your partner combined. In the five years immediately preceding an application the gifting limit drops to $7,500 per year. Everyone needs a little stress in their lives in order to stay healthy and focused. It’s your body’s natural reaction to threats, excess demands, and other challenges. There’s even a book on ‘The Upside of Stress’.

All of us can feel sad, anxious, tense, or afraid from time to time, but sometimes coping with day-to-day life becomes an overwhelming struggle, it might be time to consider whether you are addicted to stress. Note that this article discusses generalised stress holistically. Contact a mental health professional if you need specific help.

UNABLE TO RELAX If you are unable to switch off at the end of the day, perhaps you are addicted to stress. You may feel like you’re always chasing that next high, constantly in search of the next big exciting thing. You may find yourself turning to unhealthy coping mechanisms like drugs or alcohol which put further stress on your body in the long run. You may even find yourself going out of the way to avoid common relaxation and mindfulness techniques. Modern-day stressors are nuanced. Unlike cavemen faced with physical threats, today our stressors are more likely to be prolonged and psychological; think stresses with work, relationships, and finances. If you were told to list every source of stress in your life, how would you react to the challenge? Could you even get it done?

OVERCOMMITMENT Constant procrastination and an overflowing schedule are the ingredients for an overcommitment cocktail that will leave you shaken and stirred. If you often find yourself relying on the adrenaline rush of looming deadlines or cramming tasks into your day so you have no downtime, then it’s time to reflect on your stress level. Procrastination and perfectionism go hand in hand. When there’s pressure to be perfect, it can be a lot harder to get started. Having overly high standards can be a good thing, but when maintaining those standards negatively impacts one’s overall wellbeing, it can become quite problematic. Perfectionists might think their standards are motivating them, but really, perfectionism only strengthens negative thought patterns. If you find yourself thinking that no matter how hard you try, you won’t ever be good enough, pause. You are more than enough! Everybody makes mistakes, and everybody has those days. It may be time to rethink that all-or-nothing mindset and face your fear of failure, all in the name of eliminating stress.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS The body keeps the score. If you find yourself getting sick more often, suffering from mood swings and irritability, experiencing anxiety or depression, having difficulty concentrating or remembering things, then it might be your body signalling that it’s time to slow down. Southern Cross list several signs and symptoms of stress on their online medical library: sleep disturbances, lack of confidence, tearfulness, muscle tension and pain, fatigue, headaches, changes in appetite, decreased sexual function, and difficulty breathing. “Long term, uncontrolled stress is associated with the development of a number of medical conditions. Primarily these occur as the result of biochemical imbalances that can weaken the immune system and overstimulate the part of the nervous system that regulates heart rate, blood pressure, and digestion,” the site continues.

SO, NOW WHAT? Identifying a stress addiction is only half the battle. Everyone experiences stress differently; a calming technique for one person might stress out someone else. The Mental Health Foundation recommends learning and practising the Three Rs to help manage and recover from stress; refuel, resolve, and relax. According to their website, refuel – whakatipu – is about “looking after wellbeing and cultivating energy to refuel,” resolve – whakatika – is about “identifying stressors and finding solutions that help resolve the causes of stress,” and relax – whakatā – is about “switching on the relaxation response to restore and rest.” Southern Cross’ medical library says that “Exercise, dietary changes, relaxation, stress management courses, counselling, and medications can all play a role in managing, relieving or coping with stress.” Many solves to stress addiction can seem trivial and even insulting, but know they are all come with good intentions. There are many ways that you can help your mind and body adapt, and become more resilient to the negative impacts of life’s stresses. Entering the fifth decade of life is a milestone that often prompts reflection on health and well-being. While the aging process brings its own set of changes and challenges, maintaining fitness after 50 offers a lot of remarkable benefits that can significantly enhance one's overall quality of life. Aging is an inevitable part of life, and while it brings with it wisdom and experience, it also brings physical changes that can affect our health and well-being. As we age, our bodies naturally undergo muscle loss, bone density reduction, and a slower metabolism. One of the most effective ways to navigate these changes is by staying physically active.

Improved physical health One of the most noticeable benefits of staying fit after 50 is the improvement in physical health. By burning calories and increasing muscle mass, regular physical activity helps control body weight and composition. This, in turn, reduces the risk of obesity-related health issues such as type 2 diabetes, joint pain, and sleep apnoea.

Mental wellbeing Physical fitness isn't just about the body; it hugely affects mental well-being as well. Studies have shown that staying active can enhance cognitive function, including memory, attention, and problem-solving skills. Exercise increases blood flow, ensuring that the brain receives an adequate supply of oxygen and nutrients. This cognitive benefit can be particularly significant as we age, as it helps maintain mental sharpness and reduces the risk of age-related cognitive decline. Engaging in regular physical activity may lower the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Baked Feta Pasta

Method

Serves four

1. Preheat oven to 200°C.

This baked feta pasta has it all, bold flavours, creamy comfort, and carbs! * This dish is easily adaptable and can be tweaked to suit your preferences. Add spinach for extra vege or try adding a cooked protein of your choice before serving. Some good options are chicken, bacon pieces or even grated tofu.

Ingredients • • • •

500g cherry tomatoes 4-5 garlic cloves 1 block of feta ½ cup olive oil

• Salt and pepper to taste • 350g (approx) pasta of choice • Fresh basil, sliced or torn

2. In a baking dish, add the cherry tomatoes and garlic cloves. Place the block of feta into the middle of the baking dish. Pour over olive oil and season with salt and pepper. 3. Bake in the oven for approximately 30 minutes, or until the tomatoes are bursting and the feta is browning. 4. While the feta and tomatoes are cooking, cook your pasta of choice in a pot of salted boiling water. Once cooked, drain and reserve. 5. Once the feta and tomatoes are cooked, remove from oven. Add the fresh basil. Stir, and mash tomatoes slightly to combine all ingredients together into a sauce. 6. Add your pasta. Stir to coat the pasta in the sauce. Enjoy!

2 tablespoons pesto • Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional) 2 eggs • 2 pieces sourdough bread Pinch of salt • 2 tablespoons herbed goat's cheese Pinch of ground black pepper

Method 1. Heat a frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, spread the pesto in a thin layer across the pan. 2. When the pesto is warm, crack the eggs into the pan. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes. Cook the eggs for 4 to 5 minutes or until the whites are set and no longer translucent. 3. Meanwhile, toast the bread and spread with the goat cheese. 4. Remove the eggs from the pan and place them on the toast. 5. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Some say that a hobby is something you love to do so much that you would happily do it for free. So why not make some extra cash out of it? Well, there are plenty of reasons not to.

Passion doesn’t equal talent, and that is okay. You might want to hone your skills before monetising them. Experience in the form of study, research, training, and focus is key.

With the current cost-of-living crisis and inflation pressures rising, it is unsurprising that many Kiwis are turning to side hustles to stay financially afloat, and thanks to social media and Internet marketplaces, making money from a side hustle has never been easier.

Spending time on an enjoyable pastime can improve your mental health and wellbeing and make you feel happier and more relaxed. But if monetising your hobby adds exhaustion and stress to your life, perhaps it isn’t the right call. Even in a cost-of-living crisis, remember that not everything needs to make you money. Understand that you are essentially starting a very small business. With monetising a hobby comes pricing and margin-making, financial admin like tax, marketing, promoting, establishing an online presence, stimulating sales, and deciding where the creation and sales process lives – and the list goes on.

But it’s important to remember why you fell in love with the hobby in the first place. Making things to sell them can squash creative ideas long before they have the chance to exist. Sharing the road & footpath Whether you live in a residential suburb or in a complex with retired people, sharing space with cars and pedestrians will always be a challenge. Everyone has an opinion about who has the right of way in a village setting. The ultimate conflict is between people who believe pedestrians have priority or people who believe cars have preference. What do you think? When we regard the access road to our unit/home as a driveway, we immediately consider pedestrians (including people in wheelchairs or other mobility devices) and pets as vulnerable. You would not drive at a faster speed than five to 10 kilometres per hour. This principle applies to mobility scooters and electric wheelchairs. Any heavy moving object poses a risk to people and pets. Exiting your property on a busy street? There are a few things you could consider. Reversing will always be more demanding than driving forward. Unless you have space inside your property to turn around, you will have to back out at some point. It is difficult to back

out onto the road when your visibility is limited. It is better/ safer to reverse into your garage or driveway when you can see what is out on the road or footpath. This way, you allow other road users to see your intentions and react. Proceed carefully to reverse into your garage or driveway. At first, it will take a bit longer, but as you do it repeatedly, you will master it in less time. Keep the sides of your garage clear of objects to give you a bit of room. Before driving forward, remember to toot briefly to warn pedestrians of your intentions. You have to give way to them. Could you give it a go? It may not be for you, so do it the way you feel comfortable doing it.

With life savings, personal information, and peace of mind at stake, it's crucial for you to be well-informed about the potential risks and ways to avoid falling victim to scams. Let's delve into practical strategies that you can employ to keep safe against various scams. One of the most effective defences against scams is knowledge. You should familiarise yourself with common types of scams, such as phishing emails, fraudulent phone calls, fake charities, and identity theft. The best approach is to stay updated on the latest scams and techniques used by fraudsters through reliable sources like government agencies, consumer protection organisations, local law enforcement and companies that you use for personal expenses (banks, phone companies etc). Usually large companies like banks, IRD and phone companies are good at sending out messages to their customers warning them (the customers) of scams going around. Whether it's via phone, email, or in person you should always approach unsolicited communications with scepticism. Remind them that legitimate organisations rarely ask for sensitive information like Social Security numbers, credit card details, or passwords through such means. Encourage them to verify the identity of the person or organisation before sharing any personal information.

To start, it’s important to preface that ageing is not something to dread, in fact, it’s a beautiful and natural process to be celebrated. While we are all aware of the visual changes that appear with getting older, it can also be helpful to know why they happen. Wrinkles are like the poster child for aging. It’s guaranteed that they will show up sooner or later, but why do we get them? Spending too much time in the sun without sunscreen is a significant accelerator of wrinkles and fine lines, due to its adverse effects on skin elasticity. Bad habits such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and poor diet also speed up the skins ageing process. Additionally, the combined effects of gravity and declining collagen production eventually lead to wrinkles and sagging of the skin. Another noticeable sign of ageing is the appearance of dark spots and pigmentation. Age spots, not to be confused with freckles, are typically larger and tend to appear on areas that receive more sun exposure, like the face and hands. As we age, various changes happen beneath the surface of our skin. Skin cells gradually become thinner, as do the melanocytes (cells responsible for pigment), leading to a thinner and more translucent appearance of the skin. On top of that, our sebaceous glands, and collagen production become less efficient over time, resulting in thinner and drier skin. The earlier we start with good habits, the better. That being said, as we near our fifties, our bare minimum skincare regime should look like this:

This can be paired with twice weekly, mild exfoliation to help get rid of dead skin cells and help encourage cell turn over for smoother and more supple skin.

Treat When dealing with hyperpigmentation and hidden sun damage, dermatologists often suggest slowly incorporating a retinol. The vitamin A derivative, when applied topically, encourages skin renewal, and stimulates collagen production. It not only combats free radicals responsible for oxidative stress and skin ageing but also works to fade hyperpigmentation.

SPF UV exposure is the top cause for premature skin ageing. UV rays breakdown essential skin proteins such as collagen, leading to fine lines, pigmentation and worse case, skin cancer. It is highly recommended that we use a minimum of SPF30 or higher, every single day to protect our skin from the harmful effects of sun exposure.

Our beautiful Buller region has so much to offer, so we are not surprised when the majority of our visitors say to us, they will have to extend their stay when they return, to experience more of our unique, tranquil region. One and a half hours north of Westport is Karamea, which is the gateway to the Kahurangi National Park. Here you will be in awe by the beautiful landscapes and in admiration of the distinctive Nikau palms scattered along the coastline. Just a short distance north of Karamea is the Oparara Basin, which is world known for the magnificent limestone arches, including the Moria Gate Arch, perfect for those photo opportunities. If you are seeking a further insight into this amazing history, then the three-hour Honeycomb cave tour, would be an ideal treat with its impressive features and a varied collection of subfossil bird bones. Walks and exploring are plentiful in this region, including an hour’s walk up to Scotts beach, commencing at the suspension bridge at the beginning of the Heaphy track. Need to rest those tired legs and fuel the body? Look no further than the Last Resort, known for its outstanding hospitality. Gentle Annie and Mokihinui sit peacefully on each side of the Mokihinui river, each with their own quirky popular campgrounds.

The Cowshed Café based at Gentle Annie, is New Zealand’s only coffee shop situated in a once operating milking shed, now serving delicious homemade baking. Close by, is Seddonville, which is the entrance to the historical Charming Creek walkway, and the 85km hugely popular Old Ghost Road cycling and hiking track. For refreshments or accommodation don’t go past the friendly Seddonville hotel, or the Rough and Tumble lodge, which has outstanding views of the Mokihinui river. Hector and Granity are small towns nearby with some quirky and local crafty art shops. Hector is also home to the Country and Music Heritage Museum. This has an exclusive collection of Country Music memorabilia. Close by is Waimangaroa, the entrance way to Denniston. From here you can wind your way up the steep road to this historically rich, coalmining town, with once being described as the “8th Wonder of the World”. At 518 metres above sea-level you will be able to view the 1.5-kilometre incline, once used to transport coal between 1880-1967. With walks, a small museum, historical relics, mountain biking tracks for the adventurous, and spectacular views over the ranges and Westport, this is a fantastic day out. If you need to relax after this, call into the Scullery Cafe, famous for its pies and unique atmosphere. Relax amongst the local carvings, statues, and plants. It’s been a market of supply outweighing demand for several months, but as we enter spring, activity is expected to pick up — including the usual spring flurry of listings. Typically, spring is seen as an ideal time to bring a property to market — particularly as many people look to make their buying plans this side of Christmas. Here’s what to think about as you look to list your property.

Unlocking Build to Rent housing The Property Council, whose members are some of New Zealand’s largest property developers, owners and investors, has come out in support of the government’s Build to Rent tax exemption boost. Property Council New Zealand chief executive, Leonie Freeman, says the initiative could mark a key turning point towards unlocking the potential of Build to Rent.

“By enabling Build to Rent, the property sector will be able to deliver thousands of new high-quality, high-density rental houses, supporting New Zealand’s urban intensification and climate ambitions.

“Our members share the government’s view that enabling Build to Rent will provide warm, dry rental homes that offer Kiwis long-term security of tenure.

“Kiwis will hopefully soon have many choices to access to a warm, dry and climate friendly Build to Rent home.

“It is encouraging to see that the government has listened to our sector and acknowledged Build to Rent as a unique property asset class.

“Over the past 18 months, the Property Council has been working closely with the government to highlight the untapped potential of Build to Rent and explain the legislative actions required to enable it.

“The government’s announcement is a major step towards boosting New Zealand’s emerging Build to Rent sector.

Over the last few years many more people are choosing direct cremations – a form of unattended cremation where family and friends don’t have a funeral at all. Often this can be about cost, although if the family chooses to have a memorial after there may not be a lot of saving. So in defence of a full funeral, with a body present and managed by a professional funeral director, we’ve explored whether a full funeral is relevant today.

Who is the funeral for? Often our members hear “Oh I don’t want a fuss”. Gently, they must remind families that the funeral is not just for them. Funerals provide a socially acceptable and safe setting for the open expression of personal grief. They provide a focus for the expression of loss by individuals and by their communities. This latter can go beyond wider friends for many and so often we have seen people want to be celebrated and acknowledged by those who’s lives they have touched. Funerals are also a vehicle for the support of the bereaved. The hugs, the kind words, the caring actions of those supporting the bereaved reinforce the important social ties that reflect what it is to be human.

Order and meaning Most of us don’t deal with death frequently. Even if expected, the grief associated with death affects our thinking and decision-making abilities. Death is also a bit complicated. There is paperwork to be done. Laws to be followed. An event to be created – all in the space of a few days.
