KNEAD News It’s been Lambing time on the farm! The last few months on the farm have been busy for Michael and Robert (Michael’s shepherd). They, between them, have been lambing non-stop with a final count of over 200 lambs now feeding well in the fields. Some of our managers went down to lend a hand (or see how it’s done…) and learn a little more about the produce we use on our menus. During their visit they viewed the birth of a new lamb and managed a cuddle with a few babies that were only a few days old. After leaving the sheds they had a tour around the farm meeting Christian, our bull, and many of his lady friends and calves. Michael is proud of using Lincoln Red cattle which are a rare breed. They have a distinct flavour and we use the meat on our menus as often as possible.

The Crown in particular now runs a Lincoln Red Specials menu using different cuts of meat with different dishes.

Chris, Hayley and Jimmy have been busy organising events including a ‘Family Fun Weekend’ with live music, bouncy castle, outside games, treasure hunts and much, much more! In July, Smith’s will be celebrating a decade of its annual beer festivals with over 30 real ales and ciders and live music. 10th annual Beer Festival Polo T-shirts are now available for sale.

Finally on August Bank Holiday don’t forget our annual Cider and Sausage Festival which has grown from strength to strength, this year showcasing over 30 real ciders from around the country.

Calling all Gin Lovers!

Dues to the fast growing sales of gin, The Crown is now launching its very own ‘Gin Menu’ with a variety of gin drinks using local producers from Two Birds in Market Harborough, Burleigh’s in Leicester and Warner Edwards in Northampton. New drinks include Burleigh’s Negroni, Two Birds ‘Old Tom Gin’ with Fentimans Rose Lemonade and rose petals and The English Garden using Elderflower gin.

Stamford Brewing Companies new beer! We have recently teamed up with Hopshackle in Market Deeping to produce our very own beer. Our staff and managers help brew the beer teaching them the importance of brewing correctly and all of the methods involved. Spring Lamb is a pale gold 3.8% ale. It is made using low colour “propino” pale ale malt, grown in the UK, and also a touch of wheat to give the head stability. The hops used are English Challenger for bittering, and American Cascade for flavour and aroma. The beer is fermented using the “Whitbread B strain” of yeast. The flavour is of intense citrus fruits with a dry bitter finish.

Interesting Asparagus Facts

Research has shown that the minerals and amino acids in asparagus may not only protect the liver against toxins, but can also relieve some of the effects alcohol has on the body. It is believed that the vegetable helps certain enzymes break down the alcohol better thereby alleviating some of the hangover effects of alcohol consumption.

Asparagus is finally here!

Later than expected this year, due to our usual unpredictable weather, asparagus at Knead Farm has finally arrived.

To celebrate asparagus from our farm annually we have a menu dedicated to this fantastic vegetable. It is now also available to purchase for £3 a bunch from our bars. Pick up a menu to find an Asparagus Scotch Egg recipe for you to try at home.

While it’s often made fun of, the truth is that the majority of people can’t smell “asparagus pee“– the odor asparagus consumption causes urine to have. It actually takes a specific gene to allow someone to detect the smell, and only 25% of people have that gene.

Asparagus is one of the best vegetable sources for riboflavin (Vitamin B2) which studies have shown can help reduce the frequency of migraine headaches and how long they last in people who sufferer from them.
