BETTER TOGETHER MARK DAY SCHOOL’S ANNUAL REPORT 2021-2022

OUR MISSION

Mark Day School discovers and nurtures what is finest in each child in a vibrant, inclusive learning community. Innovative and full of heart, Mark Day School strives to develop well-rounded critical thinkers in a challenging program that fosters academic excellence and responsible world citizenship.

As we reached the end of the 2021-22 school year, it was unexpected but unsurprising that I tested positive for COVID the day before Graduation. I was grateful to have participated in the farewell and celebration of Mark Day’s 42nd Closing Day, and equally grateful for an amazing leader in our Assistant Head and Director of Educational Design and Innovation, Bonnie Nishiha ra, who ably stepped in to lead the graduation of the Class of 2022.

Ms. Nishihara’s remarks to the graduates drew on one of her (many) areas of expertise, documentary filmmaking, and focused on filmmaker Ken Burns’ words about genuine stories. Burns says, “The common story is that 1 + 1 = 2. We get it. But the real stories, the genuine stories, are about 1 and 1 equaling 3. That’s what I’m interested in. We live in a rational world where we are absolutely certain that 1 + 1 = 2, and it does, but the things that matter most to us—some people call it love, some people call it God, some people call it reason—are that other thing, where the whole is great er than the sum of the parts…and that’s the three.”

Ms. Nishihara said to our graduates, “I hope that for all of you, your Mark Day story has been the three, greater than the sum of the parts that make up a Mark

So much of the Mark Day experience is about rising to genuine challenge, wholeheartedly supported by teachers and peers.”
FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Day education. Do not mistake me. I and your teachers care a lot about ‘the parts,’ which include learning to read, applying the quadratic formula, painting, speaking a world language, running the mile, and so much more. Ultimately, however, at Mark Day what matters most is difficult to capture as a list of skills or lessons; it is something deeper and more enduring. Your Mark Day School experience should feel like an internal compass that will point the way as you navigate the rest of your life…I hope that Mark Day was the place where you discovered who you are, how you learn, what you love. I heard evidence of this in so many of your speeches. I hope that Mark Day was also where you learned to truly listen—whether it was to someone sitting across the room or to someone across the globe—where you learned to understand the unique cultural lens through which each of us sees the world. I hope Mark Day is where you learned to always lead with empathy, and to reach across difference to collaborate and build relationships.”

As I listened (via Zoom) to Ms. Nishihara’s words, I found myself reflecting on our year together—what one might call our “year two” of the pandemic—and realizing that Burns’ words resonated deeply on that subject as well. I think back to each major transformation in our progression through the pandemic, which began with Distance Learning for all in March to June of 2020. It continued with the September 2020 opening of in-person Learning Hubs on campus for children of first responders, teachers, and other essential workers. Next was the Septem ber-October 2020 full-scale return of in-person learning, five days a week for every student, with every classroom as its own isolated “cohort,” supplemented by Zoom-in options for children who needed to be at home. We continued in those cohorts through the 2020-21 year. And 2021-22 brought a return to “regular school,” with all-school assembly in our amphitheater and eventually in the gym, traditional outdoor education trips, interscholastic athletics, in-per son chess, winter and spring drama productions and music showcases and more coming back online as the year progressed.

As crucial as Distance Learning, the Learning Hubs, and cohort-style learning were in their time, the return to full-scale “regular school” is where Burns’ words have special meaning. The whole Mark Day experience is greater than the sum of the parts. Getting to spend quality in-person time as Kindergarten and 8th grade buddies meant the world to our youngest—and oldest—students this past year. Getting to know the full spectrum of one’s grade-level peers in many dimensions, throughout the day, enriched the experience of each student in ways that are difficult to precisely catalog but that add up. So much of the Mark Day experience is about rising to genuine challenge, wholeheartedly supported by teachers and peers. Doing that in the context of the added diversity of the entire grade, with more opportunities to connect and more arenas in which to respond to challenge individually and collectively, accelerated in a truly 1 + 1 = 3 style.

There is another equation that one might apply to the Mark Day School community: 1 + 1 + 1 = 1. I am thinking here of students + teachers + parents/guardians, alums, alum families, and friends of the school combining to make one re markable Mark Day School community. Perhaps 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 1 is closer to the truth. That equation captures many elements that make us strong, including the partnership between parents/guardians and the school that holds each child at the center. Another crucial element is the investment that the Mark Day family and alumni community so generously makes in these wonderful children and teachers working alongside one another. It is simply not possible to bring the mission so fully to life without philanthropic support, and we are so grateful. Thank you, Mark Day families and friends, for a remarkable year together.

Sincerely yours,

Dear Friends of Mark Day School,

The theme of togetherness is a fitting one for this year’s annual report. When we do things together—learning, creating, volunteering, and giving—it is amazing what we can accomplish. In this spirit, we share the 2021-2022 Annual Report to honor and thank our Skylion commu nity, which has so generously contributed to the school’s strength.

Together we raised $1.1 million through the Mark Day Fund from more than 500 current and alumni families, grandparents, faculty and staff, and friends of the school. The November 2021 Giving Day was an exciting 24 hours when, thanks to the support of this community, we unlocked $65,000 in Mark Day Fund matching gifts. More alumni families and grandparents

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

contributed than ever before. It was a record-breaking year in participation and in funds raised.

The Family Association donated more than $189,000 through the 2022 Spring Fundraiser, eScrip/grocery store cards/AmazonSmile, and Mark Day Made. We extend a tremendous thank you to the “Happy Together” volunteers and very generous sponsors and donors, who made the event a tremendous success. At the event, we raised $136,000 for renovating outdoor play spaces through the Fund-a-Need.

These funds raised make it possible for students to enhance their learning through hands-on experiences, in-depth projects, and off-campus field trips. Thanks to your generosity, students studied the scientific evolution of pandemics, accessed thousands of books in our Learning Commons and classrooms, and deepened their coding knowledge using the program Scratch. They explored the Bay Area through field trips to the Farmer’s Market, China Camp, and the Lake Lagunitas Watershed. Fifth through 8th

graders camped, backpacked, rappelled, and rafted on overnight outdoor ed trips to Point Reyes, Pinnacles, Yosemite, and the Deschutes River. Faculty and staff and parents and guardians learned from renowned psychologist Dr. Lisa Damour. And we fielded 13 teams in six different sports. All of these things—and more— were made possible thanks to your gifts.

We are privileged to have such devoted alumni, families, and friends who so generously support Mark Day School each year.

Sincerely,

The theme of togetherness is a fitting one for this year’s annual report. When we do things together— learning, creating, volunteering, and giving— it is amazing what we can accomplish... We thank our Skylion community, which has so generously contributed to the school’s strength.

WE ARE BETTER TOGETHER

The 2021-22 school year saw the continuation of the pandemic, but also a return to beloved traditions and community moments that were once a regular part of our lives. We resumed indoor and outdoor assemblies, fall and spring theatrical productions, competitive in terscholastic athletics, cross-grade partnerships like K-8 buddies, the 42nd annual all-school chess championship, the Book Exchange in the gym, the Spring Fundraiser at HopMonk Tavern in Novato, and so much more. We’ve closed the six-foot distance between us, and rejoiced in the sight of smiles both outdoors and in the classrooms. But being better together goes beyond being physically present with one another; it’s also evident in the way we show support in ways big and small. To name a few: parent/guardian volunteers helped serve hot lunch, fundraise, and plan events; the 2021-22 annual fund was the greatest it’s ever been in school history; and this year, we completed an in-depth self-study for our California

Association of Independent Schools accreditation and a Strategic Planning process, each of which engaged all constituents of our community. We knew it before, but it has only become more evident in the past year. Simply put, we are better together.

*You’ll note that our photos show us masked. We were mask optional for much of the 2021-22 school year, but mask required when our professional photographer was here.

REUNITING IN OUR AMPHITHEATER FOR

ALL-SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES

Twice-weekly all-school assembly has always been a cherished tradition at Mark Day School. It’s a time to come together and remind ourselves that we are part of a bigger community outside of classroom walls. It’s a chance for students to practice public speaking by taking the mic to make announcements, tell jokes, and share talents. The COVID-19 pandemic required us to move assemblies virtually on Zoom. While it was still wonderful to connect in any way possible, we missed seeing each other in person—waving to cross-grade friends, sitting amongst the crowd, and seeing familiar faces.

On October 19, 2021, we held our first in-person assembly in our amphithe ater in 19 months. In addition to sim ply enjoying seeing one another and sitting in our beloved amphitheater,

there were announcements about the fall play and some great jokes told by students across grade levels. Though health and safety protocols fluctuated throughout the school year based on county transmission levels, in-person assemblies were a constant. Parents and guardians were also welcomed on campus to be part of our time together. For many, it was their first time experiencing these gatherings.

We are grateful to be back together in the spaces specially designed for such moments. Looking back, it is easy to see how gatherings like in-person assemblies could have been taken for granted. But it’s safe to say that now, when we gather together in our amphitheater, it is always a time for celebration.

THE MARK DAY FUND

OUR ANNUAL FUND

Gifts to the annual fund are a critical piece of Mark Day School’s yearly budget. These unrestricted contributions that come from parents/ guardians, alumni families, grandparents, faculty/staff, and friends of the school are put to use right away to provide much of what makes Mark Day School special—hands-on learning, dedicated faculty, and a focus on our four cross-disciplinary literacies.

The Fall 2021 Giving Day was a tremendous success, unlocking $75,000 in matching gifts. This year, more than 500 current families, alumni families, grandparents, faculty/staff, and friends of Mark Day School contributed so generously. Highlights include:

100% participation: Board of Trustees

94% participation: Current Families

100% participation: Class of 2029 1st grade families

More than 100 alumni families & friends donated more than $40,000 Nearly 90 grandparents donated more than $80,000

Sloane Whiteley ‘94

Sloane Braden Whiteley died on December 20, 2021, at home in The Woodlands, TX with her parents by her side. She battled gout which destroyed her body, but not her mind. Sloane was a Marin County native and a fifth-generation Californian. She is survived by her parents, Dr. William Daniel Whiteley and Judith-Varina Smith Whiteley of The Woodlands, TX. She attended American School Foundation in Mexico City for high school and graduated with honors. She graduated cum laude early from Texas A&M majoring in Biomedical Science and Biochemistry. She earned an M.S. in Biotechnology and an M.S. in Management Information Systems emphasizing engineer ing and software development. She worked in the oil, gas and wind industries around the world including India, Indonesia, Norway, and Dubai among other countries. Transitioning oil rigs to wind energy production was her final project. Sloane lived an amazing, interesting and contributory life. Donations in Sloane’s memory can be made to Mark Day School in support of the Learning Commons.

The members of the Eighth Pillar have given either $100,000 or more to Mark Day School since joining the community or $10,000 in the last year. They are exemplars of the unofficial Eighth Pillar of Mark Day School: Philanthropy.

THE EIGHTH PILLAR

CONVENING ON THE BIG STAGE FOR

THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS

In March 2020, mere weeks before the production of our spring musical arrived on stage, the COVID-19 pandemic hit and the show was canceled. So we were thrilled to bring back our theatrical productions for students in grades 4-8 during the 2021-22 school year.

In the fall, the humorous Chateau La Roche featured two wonderful casts and a fully realized production including a grand set, beautiful costumes, fun props, lights, and more, directed by drama teacher Tori Truss. Following friendly hosts eager to greet their guests at a hotel but who discover a cockroach infestation, the play debuted at the San Anselmo Playhouse in early February. In the spring, drama teacher Kim

Danforth led the production of Oliver Jr., Lionel Bart’s classic musical based on Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist. The story follows Oliver, an orphan in a workhouse, as he escapes to London and finds acceptance amongst a group of petty thieves and pickpockets.

Our theatrical productions are an extension of our drama program, which nurtures expressive potential and instills confidence in one’s imagi nation. There are myriad ways students can get involved, both on stage and behind the scenes.

We are so grateful to once again collect at the theater to watch our brave and talented students grace the stage.

WHY I GIVE

GEORGE AND THERESA EISENBERG

From left to right Lizzy Eisenberg Casso-Gomez ‘98 with her dog Pippa, George, Theresa, Maggie Eisenberg Schuman ‘02:

The Eisenbergs first learned of Mark Day School through two neighborhood families who shared their own experiences at Mark Day and invited them to morning assemblies and other school events. Theresa says, “It was the format of the K-8 assemblies that incorporated learning, community, and character (humor, too), that convinced us that this was the educational environment we wanted for our children.” They applied for their daughter Lizzy, who enrolled as a kindergartner in the fall of 1989.

“Mark Day School provided a supportive envi ronment that stretched Lizzy ’98 and Maggie ‘02 beyond their comfort zone, without being too much of a stretch,” explains Theresa. “The diversity of activities allowed them to try differ ent things and learn what most interested them. Each of our daughters developed a discipline that carried them successfully through their high school and college years and made those years equally satisfying…They credit their Mark Day School teachers for sharing their own love of learning with them, and still appreciate the enthusiasm, patience, and encouragement those teachers modeled each day.”

Theresa and George fondly remember the summer of 1991 when Mark Day School moved from Blackstone Drive to its present site on

Trellis Drive. They recall that everyone—admin istration, faculty, parents, and students—rolled up their sleeves to make the new school site ready for the fall. The Eisenbergs helped paint the lower school hallway and remember former headmaster Mr. Kerby—who wore a hard hat for dramatic effect—driving a huge truck loaded with desks and materials to the new campus. Over the years, Theresa and George were part of many new family welcome activities which were a great opportunity to become better acquainted with both long-time families and new families, many of whom their family remains close to today. After Lizzy and Maggie graduated, Theresa taught an after-school art class at Mark Day for 16 years.

When asked why they continue to give to Mark Day School after all of these years, they ex plained that there are two reasons. “In addition to providing a strong educational foundation for our daughters, the heart and spirit of the school have had an ongoing benevolent influence on the four of us. Secondly, we give to Mark Day School so that others may be able to benefit from the education and experiences it provides to its students and their families. It would be a dream if young people everywhere could have such an education.”

The Eisenberg family has been part of the Mark Day School community for 32 years. And every year for 32 years, they have donated to Mark Day School. What inspires them to stay connected and to give?

ENDOWMENT

The endowment supports teacher salaries and professional development, brings socio-economic diversity that benefits every child, and keeps the school secure in volatile times.

Endowment funds generate income through the school’s careful investment and support the school in perpetuity. The endowment principal remains intact each year as the school uses only a portion of the return generated to fund initiatives, with the spend rate ranging between 3% and 4% annually over the past several years.

Mark Day School’s endowment contributed nearly $400,000 to the operating budget for the 2021-22 school year. That means that the earnings currently lower tuition by approximately $1,000 each year for each and every student.

We are especially grateful to donors who chose to support the endowment as they are providing for the school’s future. In addition to the Unrestricted Endowment, the school has several named funds with income restricted to the following areas.

JOINING BELOVED

COMMUNITYBUILDING EVENTS

During the 2021-22 school year, we were thrilled to welcome back beloved events like the Book Exchange, All-School Chess Championship, Holiday Assembly, the Faculty/Staff Fun Fest, and student music concerts. These events are moments for students and parents/guardians across grades to come together around common interests—and books, chess, and music are certainly deeply rooted Mark Day interests!

Highlights include over 150 students participating in the chess tournament, raising more than $10,000 for eSibonisweni’s ePOP program through the Fun Fest, singing “The 12 Days of Christmas” in December, and celebrating the talents and hard work of our school bands.

Thank you to everyone who joined these fun and fulfilling community events!

Over the course of the last year, Mark Day administrators, Board of Trustees, and faculty/ staff have worked hard to move two large initiatives forward: the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) Self-Study and the 2022 Strategic Plan. For both, widespread participation across the community is essential to ensure inclusion of all constituent voices and rally around a common goal.

As a member of CAIS, we are required to engage in a rigorous accreditation process every seven years. The process began in March 2020 and resumed in the spring of 2021, guided by

co-chairs Fernanda Pernambuco, Director of Partnerships, Equity, and Inclusion, and Suzanne Alpert, 8th Grade Science Teacher, and a com mittee of administrators, faculty, and staff. The Strategic Plan Task Force ran simultaneously, and was comprised of Board members and administrators.

We are thrilled to share the Strategic Plan with our community soon. It will help guide us toward exciting new initiatives that align with our mission and values as a school.

PRACTICING TEAMWORK DURING

SCHOOL SPORTS

Learning how to collaborate with others is a skill students build in numerous ways at Mark Day School. They work together on classroom projects, navigate the wilderness in small groups on outdoor ed, plan fundraising events—and join competitive team sports with their Mark Day peers.

During the 2021-22 school year, Upper School students were able to participate in volleyball, cross country, flag football, basketball, golf, and track & field. While COVID protocols continuously shifted throughout the year, the ability to step onto the court or track or field and play as a team remained strong. Through these opportunities, students collaborated with their teammates to achieve a common goal—to play hard, challenge their opponent, and become victorious—and put into practice good sportspersonship.

Sixth graders bag lunches for the Ritter Center and learn about food insecurity in the U.S. and Marin County.

GIVING BACK CARING FOR OUR COMMUNITY BY

At Mark Day School, philanthropy is our unofficial “8th Pillar” of Character. Starting in Kindergarten, students learn about our greater community and how they can help those in need. They begin to understand that community includes those beyond our campus, and that they have the power to positively impact others. Though philanthropy occurs throughout the year in various forms, most grade-level initiatives center around the holidays.

While COVID-19 forced slight adjustments to the normal program, students in every grade were able to give back to our community during the 2021-22 school year. In the Lower School, students made crafts and decorations for Adopt A Family, conducted a drive for mittens, gloves, and scarves through the Ritter Center’s Warm Hands Project, and made placemats for Vivalon (formerly called Whistlestop). In the Upper School, students raised money and provided holiday gifts for families through the Adopt A Family program, organized a toy drive for the Ritter Center, and teamed up with cross-grade buddies to run a canned food drive for the SF Marin Food Bank.

These efforts made a huge differences for those that benefitted, and Mark Day students carry forward their sense of responsibility and agency.

VOLUNTEER COMING BACK TO CAMPUS TO BE A

All parents and guardians at Mark Day School belong to the Family Association, and the Family Association is vital to our community. There are plenty of opportunities for parents and guardians to volunteer throughout the year to ensure specific programs run smoothly, including hot lunch, Family Sunshine, the Mark Day Fund, the Book Exchange, and the Spring Fundraiser. We are so grateful to all parents and guardians who gave their time to help our students learn and our community come together during the 2021-22 school year!

PARENT & GUARDIAN VOLUNTEERS

We salute the many volunteers who support teaching and learning in every way. The leadership of the fundraising and event volunteers supports a culture of giving, allowing philanthropy to thrive and make a significant difference in the lives of Mark Day School students now and for generations to come.

STAYING CONNECTED

BEYOND GRADUATION

Mark Day graduates are forever part of our community. As alumni, they carry their Mark Day education and memories with them through the rest of their educational years and beyond. Whether they attended Mark Day for nine years or just a few, they’ve left their mark on teachers, administrators, and other students.

There are many ways in which we reconnect with alumni throughout the year, including annual events like the breakfast in June and holiday gathering in December, the alumni panel during Admission season, and campus visits. We love keeping in touch with our alumni and following along in their journeys.

WAYS TO GIVE

The cost of educating each child at Mark Day stretches beyond what is covered by tuition, and we rely on philanthropy from the community to fill that gap. From donating your time to naming Mark Day School as a beneficiary in your will, there are many ways to give, and all of them are greatly appreciated. No gift is too small. Every hour of time and every dollar matters. Thank you for helping to give our students an education that will propel them forward with the skills to succeed in the 21st century.
