To our Mark Day Fund donors, your unwavering support ensures our ability to sustain the educational program while implementing innovative projects each school year. Thank you for your donations during the 2023-2024 school year, which topped $1,334,000.

To our supporters who helped launch the Campaign for Mark Day School Faculty, thank you for your early gifts and pledges which will support endowment for compensation, professional development, and the intern teacher program in perpetuity. Our work on this campaign continues and will benefit the school for generations to come.

To our Spring Fundraiser sponsors and donors, your partnership and generosity made the SUPERHEROES! event vibrant and successful, enabling us to raise more than $110,000 in critical funds, including $120,000 for the Fund-a-Need. What a night!

To our volunteers, your dedication embodies the spirit of community that defines our school. Your time and skills have enriched the lives of students and teachers, creating lasting impact.

24 WAYS

STUDENTS EXPERIENCED CHALLENGE & JOY

IN LEARNING IN 2023-2024

At Mark Day School, students are encouraged to embrace all that comes with daily learning—the fun moments, the collaborative projects, the frustrations and mistakes, the “aha” moments when the answer finally clicks. Starting in Kindergarten, students understand that learning is both fun and challenging; they are simultaneously drawn into engaging lessons and also stretched beyond their comfort zones to grow.

The quote from alum Neha Budhraja ‘08 below sums it up well—both joy and challenge are necessary for effective and impactful lifelong learning. In the following pages, you’ll read about 24 ways in which students across K-8 experienced both challenge and joy in learning during the 2023-2024 school year.

“Challenge without the fun would have been drudgery. And fun without the challenge would not have been fun for very long. It is the balance of the two that makes Mark Day special. NEHA BUDHRAJA ‘08

1TINKERING AT LUNCH

In addition to scheduled classes and cross-disciplinary collaborations, students in grades 2-8 have the option to visit the Creativity Lab during lunchtime to work on personal projects. It’s a time when students have free access to all kinds of tools—and expert practitioners— to bring their imaginations to life. Both Tatian Greenleaf (Design, Tinkering & Technology Integrator) and David St. Martin (Tinkerer & Garden Teacher) are on hand to help students design, saw, drill, glue, and more. Projects that students have worked on this year include a skateboard, wooden spoons, a flashing light, a giant ball maze, a mask, and a model rocket.

“ It’s a time when students have free access to all kind of tools—and expert practitioners—to bring their imaginations to life.

27TH GRADE OUTDOOR

ED AT YOSEMITE

Outdoor ed is an annual favorite for students in grades 3-8. The 7th grade trip backpacking in Yosemite is particularly special— and challenging. Many students experience backpacking for the first time as they split into small groups and hike through the Yosemite backcountry for several

days. Students learn about perseverance, preserving the natural environment by “leaving no trace,” weathering through the unexpected, and proving they are stronger than they initially thought. It’s a great way to start the year in 7th grade.

3EXAMINING OUR MISSION

Mark Day School’s mission is at the heart of who we are, what we do, and how we do it. As part of the Board’s responsibility to protect and advance the mission, it regularly reviews and, as necessary, revises the mission statement to ensure it reflects the school’s unique vision and goals. In 2023-24, the Board established a Mission Statement Working Group, composed of trustees, administrators, alumni and faculty, to carry the mission statement review forward and incorporated feedback from students, teachers, parents/guardians, and alumni families. The result? So much learning—and our new mission statement.

4LEARNING WITH AND FROM KYP

This spring, we were thrilled to welcome another delegation of students and teachers from one of our two partners in South Africa, the Kliptown Youth Program (KYP). During their two-week stay, the KYP delegation taught and learned in our classrooms, shared stories, participated in lessons and activities with all constituents from our community, and developed deeper friendships. Among the delegation were a few notable individuals, both new and returning—Thando Bezana, artist-in-residence who worked with students in the music room and various grades to help teach about Apartheid, Thulani Madondo, KYP’s Executive Director, Teboraga (Tebo) Maluleka, a middle school teacher and senior tutor at KYP who spent much of her time in 1st and 5th grade classrooms, and Ms. Antoinette Sithole, who lived through Apartheid in Soweto and joined the Soweto Youth Uprising.

53RD GRADERS RESEARCHED ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS

In science, 3rd graders studied animal adaptations and had the opportunity to conduct in-depth research to learn more. The project was called “Creature Feature,” and each student was given a Marin animal to research. They found information on physical and behavioral adaptations such as their body covering, how/when they hunt or feed, body parts that assist survival, and how they interact with their habitat. Students utilized the school databases to find the information. They even saw some of the animals they researched during their outdoor ed trip to Walker Creek!

6G4-8 TIMED MILE RUN

Students in Upper School PE participate in the timed mile run several times per year. Running is a regular part of warming up and allows students to track their fitness progress. Students under-

stand that they are not competing with anyone but themselves. PE teachers Cody Fusco and Justin Bayer encourage students to work towards improving their mile time throughout the year.

THE MARK DAY FUND

7MAKING ORIGINAL MUSIC

In Upper School music, students have numerous opportunities to both learn about and study existing music and also create their own music. This year, 6th graders spent several weeks learning how to create and arrange their own original music arrangements using Garageband. Students were guided through the process of how to analyze and break songs down into their different parts as well as how to program beats, melodies, and chord progressions using MIDI devices and layer pre-recorded sounds from Garageband’s built-in sample library. Additionally, 7th and 8th graders in the Working Musician Elective organized a multi-instrumental band to both learn and re-interpret popular songs as well as learn how to write and arrange an original song.

“ Students were guided through the process of how to analyze and break songs down into their different parts as well as how to program beats, melogies, and chord progressions.

8READING, READING, READING

Students at Mark Day School love to read. Our two-story Learning Commons houses tens of thousands of books for all grade levels K-8. In class, Upper Division students often meet in book clubs to discuss chosen books. Students in grades 4-8 can join the Skylion Seal Book Club, which meets weekly at lunch. And, students in grades 3-8 can create a Bizjack Reading Project, a creative way to showcase a book they’ve recently read, several times throughout the year.

95TH GRADERS STUDIED ENERGY IN THE CREATIVITY LAB

In an integrated unit with the Creativity Lab, 5th graders investigated electric circuits, magnets, and electromagnets to develop an understanding of how energy changes form within systems. Mr. St. Martin, Mr. AJ, and Mr. Greenleaf facilitated a solar machine project in the Lab in which students engaged in a Design Thinking process to take on one of two challenges: some students designed cars for speed and others for their ability to carry weight. Think race cars and pickup trucks— only powered by the sun!

10WORKING TOGETHER AS A TEAM

This year, many of our older students participated in after school athletics. We fielded 16 teams in six sports: volleyball, cross country, and flag football in the fall, basketball in the winter, and golf, track and field, and volleyball in the spring. Extracurricular athletics are a great opportunity for students to represent their school, work as a team, work on fitness, and have a ton of fun.

118TH GRADERS SPREAD AWARENESS ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE

During their unit on Climate Change in science, 8th graders identified and delved into a pressing climate change issue and created a project to address it. In addition to their projects, they engaged in various outreach activities, such as creating posters for the middle division hallway and educating 2nd graders about climate change through postcards and stories. Several students also showcased their projects at an Upper School divisional assembly.

122ND GRADERS BUILT

CROSS-GENERATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

As part of their year long commitment to community engagement, 2nd graders visited AlmaVia, a senior community in San Rafael, every month to build relationships with residents. Students and residents learn from one another as they do art projects and chat. The regular monthly visits allow them to get to know each other on a deeper level and understand that we each have something to teach and that we each have something to learn.

WHY I GIVE KATHERINE GUTIERREZ ‘16

Katherine Gutierrez ‘16 knew she wanted to go into the sciences as early as 6th grade, when she took Mr. Evans’ science class. In 2024, she graduated from the University of Tampa where she majored in Marine Science-Biology and minored in Sociology and Dance. Today, she works at the World Bird Sanctuary in Missouri–her dream job.

Katherine credits the support she received from great teachers at Mark Day School with getting her to where she is today. It’s in honor of these teachers that she donates to the Mark Day Fund every year.

Katherine explains, “[Math teacher] Beth Bonzell noticed I was struggling and set up meetings before class several times a week to work through the problems I didn’t understand. I so appreciate the time she took out of her day to not only make sure I understood the problems, but built up my own self-confidence that I could do hard things. Without her support, I don’t know if I’d have made it through that class, let alone become a STEM major in college and a job as a scientist post-graduation.” Another teacher that was pivotal in her growth was P.E. teacher Mr. Orwig. Katherine says, “His P.E. class was something I always looked forward to, especially when we ran the timed mile. I remember the excitement when qualifying for the “championship

mile” and getting to race against all the older girls. His continued encouragement and support at every class, cross country practice, and track and field meet meant so much to me. He even attended my last ever Nutcracker [ballet] performance!”

For Katherine, lasting Mark Day memories include looking up at the stars on their first night backpacking in Yosemite, completing the Bizjack project every year, laughing at joke assemblies, shaking Mr. Harvey’s hand every morning, and working on the science fair project in 6th grade. “Mark Day School presented challenges, both academic and social, that gave me the resilience and adaptability to succeed in high school, college, and beyond.”

When asked why it is important to her to be an alum donor, she shares, “Looking back, I recognize the incredible impact my teachers had on my life, and I want to pay that forward to the next generation. [Donors] before me…greatly impacted my time at Mark Day School, so now it’s my turn to help current and future students. I only hope that students will find the same opportunities to make memories, form lifelong connections and meaningful friendships, and have other formative experiences that help shape them into proud Mark Day School alumni!”

ENDOWMENT

The endowment supports teacher salaries and professional development, brings socio-economic diversity that benefits every child, and keeps the school secure in volatile times.

Endowment funds generate income through the school’s careful investment and support the school in perpetuity. The endowment principal remains intact each year as the school uses only a portion of the return generated to fund initiatives, with the spend rate ranging between 3% and 4% annually over the past several years.

Mark Day School’s endowment contributed more than $475,000 to the operating budget for the 2023-24 school year. That means that the earnings currently lower tuition by approximately $1,250 each year for each and every student.

We are especially grateful to donors who choose to support the endowment as they are providing for the school’s future. In addition to the Unrestricted Endowment, the school has several named funds with income restricted to the following areas.

WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF MARK DAY SCHOOL’S ENDOWMENT?

THE MORE THAN $475,000 EARNED THROUGH THE ENDOWMENT DURING THE 202324 SCHOOL YEAR CONTRIBUTED TO THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS

13USING LANGUAGE SKILLS IN REAL-LIFE SETTINGS

Putting language skills to the test in real-life settings is a great way to enhance learning. Eighth graders taking Spanish and 8th graders taking Mandarin both participated in field trips to local restaurants—Ayawaska and Ping’s, respectively—to practice ordering food with the vocabulary and sentence structure they’ve been learning in the classroom.

14KINDERGARTNERS PRACTICED PUBLIC SPEAKING

Public speaking is a regularly practiced skill at Mark Day School, whether it’s making an assembly announcement or giving a classroom presentation. For Kindergartners, they get their first public speaking experience in January, when they share their New Year’s resolutions with the community. Students stand at the microphone, introduce themselves, and then share their resolution. It’s the beginning of a long journey, building confidence that culminates with giving their graduation speeches as 8th graders—and setting each student up for a lifetime of public speaking.

15SPRING MUSICAL: BEAUTY & THE BEAST, JR.

Beauty & The Beast, Jr. tells the story of Belle, an adventurous young girl, and the Beast, her hideous captor who is actually a young prince trapped under a spell. Though many are familiar with the tale, students in grades 4-8 put on their own spin and entertained audiences of all ages in the spring.

166TH GRADERS VISITED THE CHABOT SPACE & SCIENCE CENTER

At the end of their Astronomy unit, 6th graders visit the Chabot Space and Science Center. During their visit, students participated in the Mars Lander Challenge, where they had a budget (20 popsicle sticks) to buy supplies (straws, rubber bands, bubble wrap) so they could build a “lander” that would land a payload—in this case a water balloon—safely on the surface of Mars. They tested their creations by dropping them off a second story

balcony. Students also watched a live science show that demonstrated how rockets work and the difference between solid and liquid fueled engines. Additionally, they saw a planetarium show about just how vast the universe really is. In between these activities, students explored Chabot and all of its amazing space artifacts like space suits, moon rocks, and huge working telescopes.

SUPERHEROES GALA & AUCTION

This spring’s SUPERHEORES! themed auction at the Marin Center was outstanding. More than 325 guests enjoyed music, dancing and revelry as they bid on live auction items and raised paddles for Fund-a-Need in support of our campus safety and security project. Thanks to our heroic sponsors, auction donors, bidders, and volunteers, the Family Association netted about $234,000, $120,000 of which went to the Fund-a-Need.

174TH GRADERS BUILT MINIATURE BRIDGES

USING MATH & ENGINEERING

In the fall, 4th graders combine structural engineering, math, science, creativity, and design thinking to collaboratively construct a bridge using wood craft sticks and glue that will hold significant weight. Prior to the project, they spend time learning about bridges around the world and how they are engineered to withstand foot and vehicle traffic. As teams of two, students also create their own companies, design logos, and follow budgets. Once the bridges are built, students test their weight until they break!

18 1ST GRADERS DESIGNED BUBBLE WANDS

As an extension of their lesson learning about the science behind bubbles, 1st graders design and create their own bubble wands in the Creativity Lab. After exploring the various materials that are available, students complete a “Design Thinking” planning page. This includes writing their driving question (“How can I make a bubble wand that will…?”) and then drawing a sketch of their proposed design. Next, students create their bubble wands, test them with bubble solution, and make iterations as needed. Skills included design thinking, problem solving, persevering, collaborating, trial-and-error, and questioning.

19CONNECTING WITH HISTORY

On March 27, Antoinette Sithole, who was part of the KYP delegation to Mark Day, joined Dr. Melba Beals, a member of the Little Rock Nine, in conversation. Dr. Beals joined the conversation virtually and she and Ms. Sithole reflected on their experiences at the forefront of combating racism. Students in grades 5-8, faculty and staff, parents and guardians, and alumni attended this remarkable event. We are grateful to have had this opportunity to bring together these two incredible women who took such great risks to stand up for what was right and transform the path of history.

20SHOWCASING ART IN THE ART SHOW

Every year, art teacher Karen Klier and an army of parent/guardian volunteers transform the art room into a gallery to showcase art created by students in grades K-6. The art show debuted just in time for Grandparents and Special Friends’ Day.

218TH GRADE MEDIA LITERACY WEEK

A long-standing and much anticipated project that has been running for more than 20 years at Mark Day, Media Literacy Week is a week in February during which all 8th graders suspend their typical academic classes and instead choose media topics of personal interest, conduct research, and become media creators. Media Literacy week is an opportunity for students to use and practice a set of skills they have developed over their time at Mark Day, and stretch and learn new skills about media production.

They begin by studying various documentary filmmakers to understand style and purpose. Then, they work together in small groups to refine their idea and get to work becoming experts on a particular topic. They are given high-quality cameras and access to other tools like a green screen, teleprompter, and online resources to make a video project with a specific message for an audience. Students also create an oral presentation, which they share with peers and faculty at the end of the week.

GRADERS

JOIN THE WORLD SCHOLAR’S CUP

We were thrilled to bring World Scholar’s Cup to Mark Day School for the first time this year, led by Director of Student Life, Grades 5-8 Carrie Smith. World Scholar’s Cup is a global academic competition for middle and high school students that brings together many disciplines and asks students to work together in a series of challenges. In addition to learning new content, students are encouraged to apply what they learn and relate their knowledge to the world around

them. Students participate in three-person teams in four events over two days: Collaborative Writing, the Scholar’s Challenge, the Scholar’s Bowl, and Team Debate. On April 28 and 29, we hosted 132 students—both Mark Day students and students from 15 other schools—for the Regional Round of World Scholar’s Cup. Mark Day had 12 6th grade teams and 11 7th grade teams. We are excited to continue this new academic tradition at Mark Day next year!

23VISITING REN-AI FOR THE FIRST TIME

This year, we added a new partnership to our global partnerships program. Ren-Ai (“ren-eye”) is a K-6 public school in Taipei, Taiwan, with previous experience partnering with a school in San Francisco. A group of Mark Day School 8th grade Mandarin students had the privilege of visiting Ren-Ai for the first time over our April spring break. Each student stayed with a Ren-Ai family for the full week, attended classes with their buddies, participated in special cultural activities like martial arts and brush painting, and went sightseeing. Later in the spring, we also welcomed a delegation of Ren-Ai 5th graders and faculty members to Mark Day for two weeks where they stayed with Mark Day families, learned alongside one another, and explored the Bay Area.

247TH GRADE DEEP DIVE

During the spring, 7th graders participated in Deep Dive Week—instead of their normal schedule of math, English, history, and science, students engaged in intensive, interdisciplinary and project-based learning “mini-courses” centered around a specific topic or theme. The courses offered during Deep Dive Week change with each year, inspired by what’s happening in the world around us. This year, the slate of courses included: Mark Day Central Kitchen (shopping, cooking, and delivering fresh and healthy meals to those experiencing hunger), Math-Music Connection (exploring the math aspects of music creation), The Room Where it Happens (creating a Hamilton-related performance), Take a Hike! (discovering the trails and nature of our local environment), and Game Design (learning about different types and formats of games and developing a new game of their own).

PARENT & GUARDIAN VOLUNTEERS

We salute the many volunteers who support teaching and learning in every way. The leadership of the fundraising and event volunteers supports a culture of giving, allowing philanthropy to thrive and make a significant difference in the lives of Mark Day School students now and for generations to come.
