San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency Established by voter proposition in 1999, the SFMTA, a department of the City and County of San Francisco, oversees both the Municipal Railway (Muni) and the Department of Parking and Traffic (DPT) and also sits as the Parking Authority Commission. The seven-member Board of Directors is appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Board of Supervisors. The Board is advised by the SFMTA Citizens Advisory Council. infrastructure, enhancing Muni’s support capabilities and ensuring system sustainability for future generations. Funded by federal, state and local initiatives, functions of the MME facility include: • Storage Capacity: MME’s 13 acre facility features a paved storage yard with fifteen storage tracks that can accommodate as many as 80 trains. MME’s on-site parking lot includes 170 parking spaces allocated for both employees and non-revenue vehicles. The yard also accommodates storage for maintenance-of-way (MOW) vehicles. In a continuing effort to create a greener transit system reflective of the demands of an ever-changing cityscape and a growing urban metropolis, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) adds the newly completed Muni Metro East Light Rail Vehicle Maintenance and Operations Facility (MME) to its list of customer-focused capital improvement projects. The MME ushers in a new era in Muni service delivery by supporting the T Third Line. In the spirit of San Francisco’s Transit First policy, the MME will be the operating base for the Central Subway which will open in 2016. Located near San Francisco’s eastern border and flanking The City’s T Third Line, this multi-tiered, 13 acre storage, maintenance and operations facility is an important component of SFMTA’s Third Street Light Rail Project. An ambitious two-phase development, the Third Street Light Rail Project was conceived to create new inroads to some of The City’s most traveled destinations, while improving Muni’s

• Maintenance Capability: MME’s 40 foot high, 180,000 square foot building will heighten Muni reliability by providing daily servicing of trains, preventive maintenance, running repairs and heavy repairs along with various support shops and a 16,000 square foot storeroom.

Connecting communities. • Infrastructure Improvements: MME will directly impact the performance, effectiveness and reliability of the T Third Line, a pathway linking the diverse communities of the southeastern part of The City with San Francisco’s civic, business, retail and cultural centers. MME will also play an integral role in the development and maintenance of the Central Subway project, an extension of the T Third Line scheduled for completion in 2016. This project extends the line through one of The City’s most congested downtown traffic corridors and at the same time restores rail service to the north. When completed, residents and visitors will be able to ride convenient rail service from Sunnydale to Chinatown. Community benefits from construction of Muni Metro East Light Rail Vehicle Maintenance and Operations Facility include:

• Job Opportunities: The construction of MME has provided economic opportunities and job access to local residents and contractors. San Francisco residents worked 25% of the total hours worked during the facility’s construction; 41 San Francisco residents were employed through CityBuild during construction while 23% of all subcontractors employed were hired through the Department of Transportation’s Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) program. • Neighborhood Enhancements: Development of MME included the reconstruction of 25th Street and landscaping improvements along Illinois and 25th Streets; new sidewalks from 3rd Street to Louisiana Street, the primary entrance for Muni trains and autos via 25th Street; and repaving of Cesar Chavez from 3rd Street to Michigan Street. The completion of the MME signals another milestone in the development and completion of the Third Street Light Rail Project and illustrates SFMTA’s ongoing commitment to The City’s Transit First policy. As a Transit First city, San Francisco maintains its focus on maximizing the Muni transit system while championing other environmentallyfriendly transportation alternatives such as walking, bicycling and ridesharing programs. Responsible for operating and managing all ground transportation in The City, SFMTA continues to seek out new approaches, while also applying tested solutions, to better integrate green modes into The City’s transportation infrastructure.
