LisaHoke’soeuvreframesordinarydetritusasrawmaterialsinalaborintensiveprocessofcreation.Shestates,“Earlyinmyartmakinglife,I realizedIcouldusewhatIknowandhowIliveassourcematerial.”(The Artful Mind, 2022) Working between expansive installations and diminutivecollages,Hokerepurposestheephemeraofdailylife.
Hoke’spracticeofrecycling–or,rather,reinvention–callsattentiontothe nature of the consumer experience, the material ramifications of which areoftenoverlooked.Indeed,Hoke’sartisticpracticeispredicatedonan endlesssupplyofmaterials:Thatis,theabundantavailabilityofconsumer debris. In repurposing these materials, Hoke not only does her part in keepingdetritusfromlandfills,butshealsocallsattentiontotheaverage consumer’s gargantuan impact. Relative Uncertainty will feature both large-scaleinstallationsandcollages.
LisaHokehasexhibitedacrosstheUnitedStates,includingattheMcNay MuseuminTexas,TheWhitneyMuseum@EquitableCenter,NY,andat Pamela Salisbury Gallery in Hudson, New York. In 2018, Hoke was commissioned by Lavazza to create a permanent installation, Dolce Croma,intheirTurin,Italyheadquarters.
