Our Year 8 pupils were joined today by students from @TMWSOfficial and @BeverleyHigh for a Eurofest competition. Each team chose between a city to represent or a product to sell, learning a script in a foreign language to promote their chosen city or product. Well done everyone!

Colour Run Fun!

What an amazing team effort from the pupils Replying to: We are absolutely overwhelmed and thrilled by the outcome of the community engagement project. Our children worked alongside students from @Hymers_College to design and paint an outdoor stage and the result has blown us away!

The inaugural Colour Run event held in June raised valuable funds for The John Hymers Bursary Fund.

The event was organised by the students who form part of our ‘Anti-Bullying Ambassador group’. Their role is to help educate their peers on bullying behaviour, lead on anti-bullying campaigns, promote a culture which celebrates and tolerates difference and help keep their peers safe

Once again, Hymers hosted their annual ‘We’ve Got Problems’ maths challenge for Year 5 students. However, this year our English department joined in the fun and hosted a ‘We’ve Got Issues’ challenge too!

Hymers College @Hymers_Junior: Year 6 have arrived safely in Windermere. It’s a sunny start to the trip!

Thank you to our students and families for supporting this initiative and having lots of fun! It was humbling to see the students across all year groups supporting each other and joining in the fun.

A Shakespearean Performance

Congratulations to Gabriella and Annabelle who attended the ESU Regional Final hosted at The Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Wakefield in May. Only one piece could go through to the Final. Unfortunately, it wasn’t our year, but the girls have made some good friends and really enjoyed the workshop run by a processional Shakespeare actor!

“The girls performed their Duologue, Act 2, Scene 2 of Macbeth. Annabelle played Lady Macbeth and Gabby plays Macbeth. They created the tension and fraught relationship between the couple in this scene amazingly and performed a

Well done to our students who represented Hymers in London at Goldsmiths’ Hall, National Awards. They passed the baton on by showcasing our community work since we won the prestigious Gold award for Community Engagement in 2022.

Junior School Theme Week

Our Junior School pupils enjoyed a varied Theme Week - Best of Britain through the Decades.

The start of the week began with ‘Wow Day’ where all children through the year groups completed a round-robin of teacher-led workshops related to the theme as well as an exciting Land’s End to John O’Groats challenge.

Children then worked in their mixed-aged groups to prepare their stimulating and interactive presentations on the theme within their assigned decade from 1920s through to 2010s. Presentations in front of family and friends took place at the end of the week.

Hymers Young Enterprise success

Congratulations to our Year 12 students, Jessica, Olivia, Amelia, Kate, Jessica and Vanessa for their success in the recent Young Enterprise competition rounds in Yorkshire.

The team came up with the enterprise idea of ‘A Novel Idea’. They collected second-hand books from donations and repackaged these both individually and in bundles. Benefactors then bought these bundles which they could either donate to local primary schools to help boost their libraries or the team individually wrapped books to be bought as gifts.

The team then sent information back to the donors and benefactors of how their books had been used and distributed in schools. Each book has a synopsis created for it to

help children select books they like, and all books were quality controlled.

The team was awarded first place in the North East Yorkshire, Hull and Humberside round of the Young Enterprise competition, progressing to the regional round in York. In this round they were awarded the Creativity Award and Best Presentation award!

A huge congratulations to the team and we hope all the children and schools who have received the books are enjoying reading.

Our Year 6 pupils have been delighted to receive their pen pal letters from Old Hymerians today! An initiative started during the pandemic lockdown has now become an annual favourite for our Development Office.

It has been fantastic to welcome and host The Brownlee Foundation mini-triathlon at Hymers and also to welcome hundreds of pupils from schools from across the area and see our pupils taking part! Well done to everyone for a wonderful event!

An Olympian visit to Hymers

We had the honour of welcoming Olympic decathlete, Dean Macey to Hymers College in April.

He spent the day with pupils from our Junior and Senior schools, out on the fields, offering coaching tips and advice. A huge thank you to Dean for his time and what an amazing experience for our pupils!

Junior School Sports Day

Another incredible Junior School Sports Day took place at the end of the summer term.

The Senior School Sports Day once again offered an incredible range of activities for all students.

It was neck-and-neck until the end with Holderness nudging a victory.

Exceptional performances from both the girls and boys @HymersJunior swimming teams at the ESSA National Primary School Finals. The boys finished 8th in their Freestyle A final. That is 8th in the country - well done to all the competitors who took part!

@HymersSport: Huge well done to Henry C in Y4 who has done incredibly with his swimming. He is now ranked British #1 in 200m individual medley, #2 for 200m breaststroke & 100m Individual medley, & #3 into 50m & 100m freestyle. Quite an achievement!

ARTS REVIEW

Year 7-9 Production: Fairytale Courtroom

Hymers College @HymersJunior: An amazing evening of high quality music making at the Junior School Summer Concert. A huge well done to all the children and thank you to all the music staff.

In July there was a fantastic performance from our Year 7-9 pupils in their production of Fairytale Courtroom. We were delighted to welcome pupils

from Pearson Primary School to our matinée performance with further evening performances for friends and family - well done everyone!

Year 6 Production: Alice the Musical

Hymers College @HymersMusic: Fantastic Feast of song this evening. It was our Y13’s Grace, Owen and Millie’s final concert.

The children in Year 6 performed Alice the Musical in the Judi Dench Theatre at the end of June.

Based on the book by author Lewis Carroll,

the children entertained everyone with the singing and acting. Thanks to Mrs Redhead for her musical direction and also Miss McLeod for the drama.

Ferens Young Artist Awards

A huge congratulations to three of our Junior School pupils Joseph (Y4), Seraphina (Y6) and Yashvi (Y3) who have been awarded prizes in the Ferens Art Gallery’s Young Artist Open Exhibition 2023.

Joseph received 1st prize in the 7-11 years age category, by the Hull and East Riding Branch of the Arts Society, for his artwork, Nest. Seraphina received 3rd prize in the 7-11 years age category, by the Hull and East Riding Branch of the Arts Society, for her artwork, Self-portrait.

Yashvi received 1st prize in the 7-11 years age category, from the Friends of Ferens Art Gallery, for her artwork, The Exhibition. There was a presentation at Ferens Art Gallery at the start of July and the

exhibition opens on 21 July and runs until 1 October.

There were 420 submissions for the age 7-11 category, so we are thrilled that three of our pupils were awarded prizes! Many congratulations and well done to these three pupils!

as the likes of Mr Exley who is about to embark on his well-earned retirement and Mr Prescott who is certainly not retiring after 40 years in teaching; some stay for a shorter time before moving on to other opportunities. All, however, are fully supportive of the holistic ethos and the broad co-curricular programme that is such a feature of a Hymers education.

Some great scenery in the fjords. We had lunch on top of Pulpit Rock in the clouds. Our patience was rewarded with some amazing views.

At the time of writing we are receiving regular social media updates from the multi-sports tour to South Africa. 66 students in Years 11-13 have been enjoying the fixtures which have been played in a competitive but friendly spirit.

Of course, just as importantly, they have been immersing themselves too in the rich and varied cultures of this wonderful country, with highlights including visits to the Apartheid Museum and Winnie Mabaso Foundation, a charity which supports orphaned and vulnerable children. The pupils who have been sailing to the Norwegian fjords on the CatZero trip have also been making memories that will last a lifetime, while at the start of the holiday our Year 10 band performed brilliantly, by all accounts, at the Music For Youth’s National Festival in Birmingham.

Opportunities such as these are afforded to our pupils by the committed and hardworking teaching and support staff that we are so fortunate to have at Hymers and Hymers Hessle Mount. Of course, not all our staff give such lengthy and wholehearted service

Working at a school like Hymers is a wonderful privilege but it is not for everyone. Teaching is a demanding profession regardless of the type of school; and working in a school such as Hymers places demands on teachers and support staff that

do not exist in other schools. I count myself hugely fortunate to have such a loyal and dedicated body of staff and I am sure that I speak on behalf of many parents and pupils in expressing my gratitude to all those who have worked so hard in the last year to provide such outstanding support and provision for all our pupils.

I wish all members of the Hymers community an enjoyable summer.

Sports Tour to South Africa

As this Review is being produced, our students are enjoying a multi-sports tour to South Africa.

As well as the rugby, netball and hockey matches, the intinery also includes trips to Table Mountain, Cape Canopy,

Robben Island, Camps Bay, Chapman’s Peak, Boulders Beach, Ellis Park and the Apartheid Museum at Gold Reef City. They will also experience a game drive with the chance to spot rhinoceros, giraffes, elephants and leopards.

Our Year 6 Sports Leaders welcomed 60 children from St Nicholas Primary for a day of sports coaching. They are working towards their PlayMaker Award and this marked the culmination of their hard work.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park

Hymers College @Hymers_College: Hymers Hessle Mount children had a great time at their first Sports Day held on the Junior School fields. The fastest House was Brandesburton, proudly receiving the trophy this year.

Our Year 1 children had an amazing trip to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. The sun was shining and there was so much to see, explore and learn. They even got to hold some creepy crawlies in their education session... would you have been brave enough?

Pirate-themed Week

Hymers College @Hymers_College: Have you been wondering what happened to the pupae at Hymers Hessle Mount? All ten butterflies emerged and were much loved by the Reception children. They were set free to lots of waves and cheers. The children are missing them already but hopefully they will come to visit us again in the garden or on the field!

Our Reception children spent an enjoyable ‘swashbuckling’ day dressed up as pirates.

As well as going on a treasure hunt and making pirate crafts, the children also enjoyed playing pirate games!

Potteric Carr Nature Reserve Visit

Hymers College @Hymers_College:

For Coeliac Awareness Week one of our pupils brought in a book about the disease, read it to her class and answered questions. The Year 1 children not only learned about the condition, they also got to try some gluten-free gingerbread! YUM

Our Year 2 children spent a day at the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s Potteric Carr Nature Reserve to learn about creatures who live in various habitats from reedbeds to woodland trails and networks of ponds teeming with life.

The children found the day fascinating and inspiring so we anticipate them taking a keen interest in what they find in their own gardens and local habitats.
