International School of Nanshan Shenzhen
This has certainly been an extraordinary school year. The sudden outbreak of COVID-19 has made us spend the last semester exploring a different mode of teaching. It has been a challenge for students, parents, and teachers in all aspects. However, it has also given us the opportunity to learn and improve our ways of dealing with difficulties. I genuinely believe this has been an invaluable lesson to our students, teaching them how to handle tough situations and how to make the best out of a difficult situation. We also need to commend all of our teachers and staff for quickly jumping into online teaching and continuously improving the lessons for our students, making sure it is consistent with the curriculum and objectives. In addition, with the hard work of our graduates and teachers together, all of our graduates have been admitted to top universities around the world. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to express our gratitude to all the teachers, students, and parents! Together, we have excelled, and together, we have fought this pandemic. To our graduates, I believe that everyone has learned how important it is to cherish and be grateful for all that we have. Through this tough time, you have flourished. I am sure you will succeed in all your future accomplishments.
Francis Pang | Chairman of the Board

This has undoubtedly been a very different year for all of us at ISNS. With all the difficulties and challenges that are posed to our whole community, there were many things that we can be proud of. We saw how our students could be resilient and independent learners, able to power through all the obstacles that came up. We need to applaud our teachers, who quickly stepped up to the challenges of online learning and coming up with thoughtful ways to make sure our students can keep progressing academically. Our ISNS parents' support to students, teachers, and the school has been immeasurable in this time of adversity. In particular, the ISNS parent committee has been ISNS' biggest supporter in making sure the whole school community is safe. Although this has certainly been much more different than we had envisioned as the last year of high school for our graduates, we are proud of how our seniors have handled themselves and have been able to persevere through. As you move onto the next chapters in your lives, there will always be different challenges and roadblocks, but with this experience, you will know that you can make it through. We are incredibly proud of each of you! Remember, ISNS will always be here to support you and will always welcome you back for a visit. Let's all work together for a safer and healthier future!

Dear ISNS Students, We had a fantastic first half of the year! The second half was, well, interesting. The year of the COVID-19 outbreak will certainly be remembered as a historical event for a long time to come. We especially missed seeing everyone at school during the second semester. Being quarantined at home for several months had a dramatic effect on all of our lives. It changed our lives in some very positive ways—everyone was able to bond and become closer with their family in ways that they never expected were possible! It also threw some challenges at us that tested our patience and resolve. Online learning was a challenge for students, parents, and teachers alike. Nevertheless, I am proud of everyone for having forged ahead through this unusual period in time. Everyone deserves a great deal of praise for enduring the challenges presented by the COVID-19 outbreak with grace and calm. Although you missed out on some of the wonderful experiences that normally would have taken place on campus, you found ways to create new experiences online. You had to take responsibility for managing your school day and gained essential skills in the process. You had to keep motivated even though it would have been easier to stay in bed all day. In the end, you were all able to grow from the experience and became more capable individuals because of it. Thank you for staying strong and demonstrating the best attributes of an ISNS IB student. This will not be the last challenge that life throws at us. Fortunately, the IB system of education that ISNS draws upon is designed to develop young men and women who are creative thinkers, problem-solvers, and leaders who are capable of facing anything that life can bring forth. The IB Approaches to Learning (ATLs) has never been more important than in times like these. Always remember that you are all amazing individuals who have the skills and lots of potential to create an incredible future.

Dear students, The lyricist Robert Hunter wrote the following lines for the song ‘Truckin’, “what a long strange trip it’s been”. When I sat down to write you this message, this lyric was the first thing to pop into my head. The song was considered a blues shuffle, upbeat positive blues which was different for its time. Reflecting on the last few months our journey has been strange and sometimes we have all felt the blues. Yet, I’ve also felt immense joy, and this reminded me to stay positive and hopeful that things would be better soon. In the world 2 billion children, some in extreme poverty, missed out on the learning environment, resources, safety and love that they all so very much deserve and need from their school. Teachers around the world had to adapt to a new way of teaching, with breakneck speed and high accountability. No doubt, this was accomplished because of the love the teachers have for their students. With a bluesy shuffle, I look forward to getting back to my home in Shenzhen and back to the place I call my second home, ISNS. Let’s keep on Truckin’.
Go Phoenix!

It has certainly been an interesting year in the world, hasn’t it? 2019-2020 will be remembered for a number of things, not the least of which is the global effect that COVID-19 has had on education. ISNS, like almost all other schools in the world, was faced with an unprecedented situation and a sudden shift to online learning that few were expecting. In spite of this, our teachers and students at ISNS rose to the occasion, banded together like never before, and excelled in how they handled such extraordinary times. Through the ingenuity, passion, and innovation of our teaching staff, ISNS carried on through this difficult situation, constantly reflecting, adapting and improving our delivery of online learning. Our students also rose to accept this challenge, creating new and interesting ways to engage with each other and their teachers, while at the same time adapting to this new and unfamiliar version of schooling. And yet, in this unfamiliar educational landscape that left so many of us feeling isolated, the students of ISNS found ways to connect, to continue learning, and to overcome this new obstacle. Whether it was Zoom sessions with teachers, friends, and schoolmates, or our virtual assemblies and Spirit Day, I couldn’t be prouder of the students of ISNS and the resilience they have shown through these difficult times. It certainly hasn’t been easy, but each of us will remember this year in our own way, and all our students and staff should be proud of how they’ve shown such strength, sense of community, and sense of resilience during these most extraordinary of circumstances. As things settle down and the world moves on from the difficult start to 2020, we will eventually return to a sense of normalcy. Stores will reopen, and schools will be back in session. As this happens, however, I would encourage you to take note of some of the positive experiences that came out of this school year for you. While it may seem easy to write this experience off as something to move past, I know that each of us has learned and grown in some way, and those skills and lessons can serve you well in the future. Whether it’s a new computer program you learned how to use, or perhaps a new hobby you picked up during isolation, to having a renewed sense of how important social interactions are, each of us has learned something during this experience which you can carry with you. Difficult situations create the most resilient people, so I encourage all of you to remember the strength and resilience you’ve developed over this year and draw from it when needed in the future. Finally, I wanted to acknowledge the graduating class of 2020. This is not the ending that any of us envisioned for your final year of high school. Many of you have been with the ISNS family for years, and virtually celebrating your amazing accomplishments doesn’t provide you with a true sense of how proud and impressed we are with all of you. Not only did you thrive in such difficult circumstances, but you also managed to do it during one of the most difficult years in any student’s life: the final year of high school. I’ve always been impressed with this graduating class for their creativity, dedication, and contributions to our school community. Now that I’ve seen their resiliency first-hand, I couldn’t be prouder of how well they’ve done, and the maturity they’ve shown throughout 2019-2020. To all the staff and students of ISNS, I thank you for another year of exceptional teaching, learning, and community-building. I believe this year, more than any other, has shown that our school’s staff and students can rise to any occasion, overcome any obstacle, and demonstrate that we are all the internationally-minded global citizens we strive to be. Thank you to our entire school for being the most caring community I have had the privilege of working for. I wish you all a safe and happy summer holiday, and hope you return to ISNS in August refreshed, renewed, and excited to see where this new educational journey will take us next!
Patrick Boekhoud | DP Principal 10
Dear ISNS Students, Parents and Staff, Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude on behalf of my family and myself; thank you for welcoming us to the wonderful Phoenix community. While some would call a group of Phoenixes a flock, today I choose the wording of Ritter Coldriss: an odyssey of Phoenixes. This phrase resonates with me very much. Homer's famous Odyssey describes the travels and ordeals of the Greek warrior Odysseus after Troy's fall as he struggles to return home. Thus, the word odyssey has become synonymous with journey and adventure over the years. Each one of us is on a lifelong learning journey or education adventure. Sometimes, the road is flat, smooth, and easy to travel; sometimes it is steep and rocky and challenging. Sometimes we are in good company and the going is easy, other times we are alone, and perhaps even afraid. Ideally, our learning feels effortless, but sometimes we are burdened with heavy thoughts that weigh our journey down. No matter what the road conditions and the people we encounter along the way or our state of mind, we can always learn and grow in our journey through life. This year has been an odyssey for us all. It has been an epic journey filled with many memorable moments. I look forward to taking many more steps with you as we journey on together, one step at a time. To those moving on from ISNS, I wish you safe travels.

Dear UPYP parent community, thank you for your support and communication over the course of this year. The COVID-19 situation has brought our school-home partnership into the spotlight, and I have so much gratitude for the support you have given your child’s learning and our teaching team. Dear UPYP teaching team, thank you for the countless extra hours that you have put into making online learning awesome for our students, with endless innovation and hundreds of hours of Zoom time logged. This team’s commitment has impressed me at every turn. Your care for your students has shone through at every step. Dear UPYP students, you have faced totally new challenges and have adapted in such an admirable manner. The resilience that you have gained this year is something that will strengthen you for the rest of your life. You have so much to be proud of. It has been wonderful to see your smiles over Zoom, and I know that your teachers cannot wait to see them in-person once again! This unforgettable year has truly put the IB Learner Profile to the test, and what I think we might conclude is that creating a world that is open-minded, principled and caring is more important than ever. I feel lucky to know that our community is striving to live the Learner Profile each day, and that our ISNS students will bring these values to tomorrow’s leadership. Wishing everyone in our community good health and happiness.

This has been a year for the ages. As I took on the role of Lower Primary Principal, I remember being inspired as our youngest students entered the school for the first time, truly modeling what it meant to be a risk-taker. I thought, if these brave little people can face a new challenging role head-on, so can I. It is incredible how powerful a smile or high five can be in setting one up for a beautiful day. Each morning became a constant reminder of how caring a community we are a part of at ISNS. This caring, positive vibe seen each morning carried on throughout the day. I was amazed by the commitment to teaching and learning displayed by teachers and students in the classroom each day. Students were consistently rising to the expectations and challenges faced at school; teachers were continually preparing for each day with their students’ best interests in mind and at heart. Parent trustingly sending their precious children into our care daily. We were an amazing community! There was no way we could have foreseen the magnitude of the storm rolling in as we left campus on January 22nd for the Chinese New Year. As the Coronavirus spread, so too, did our worry, uncertainty, and fear. It was the perfect storm that could have caused the strongest of communities to collapse. As the days passed into weeks and weeks unto months, I witnessed the complete opposite of a collapsing community. •Our teachers and support staff stepped up their educational game and continued to provide the top-notch educational experience expected at ISNS. Above all, they did so with their students’ best interests in mind and at heart. •Our wonderful parents took on the new increased role at home in supporting their child’s academic and social-emotional growth and did a fantastic job. •Our amazing Lower-PYP students continued to inspire me just as they did on the first day of school. They exceeded our wildest expectations and did so in a caring, positive manner. The ISNS community made the best of an unforeseeable challenge and truly stood-up to overcome the challenge. The students developed skills far beyond those of the academic variety. They embodied ISNS’s vision and core values by becoming globally-minded, becoming more empowered in their learning, and continuing to reach their potential while displaying excellence in their work. The 2019-2020 school year has been one founded on resilience and overcoming life’s challenges. These lessons are at the heart of future success. Was this how I expected my first year as Lower Primary Principal to unfold? No! Would I have hoped for the year to end in the manner it did? Never! Am I thankful I had the honour of going through this difficult situation with all of you in the ISNS community? ABSOLUTELY! Thank you to the teachers for showing us the amazing educators you are. Thank you to the parents for the unwavering support and commitment to your children and the ISNS community. And thank you to the caring students in K4-G2 for helping us all get through a challenging year and being better humans because of it. Sincerely,
Thomas Tucker | LPYP Principal 13
Dear ISNS community, What a year this has been! The COVID-19 virus epidemic has undoubtedly taken the entire world by storm. If we can imagine ourselves sometime in the future: looking back at year 2020, we could very possibly say that this was the year that forced us to change some aspects of life, which we take as the “norm at this future time. Our parents and students were formidable at keeping social distance, staying at home, and continuing the learning via online methods. Our faculty were excellent in bravely taking on the challenge of teaching online and displaying flexibility in holding online lessons and meetings (sometimes in wee hours of the night) because people were in different time zones. Our non-faculty were marvellous in working from their home and coming back on campus when necessary to prepare for the reopening of school. I must commend our ISNS community for coming together and adapting to the unexpected changes that hit all of us. Thank you so much! To our ISNS Graduates of 2020: First and foremost, congratulations! I am so very proud of each and every one of you. Even though I do not see or work with you on a daily basis, believe me when I say that I will miss you dearly. This is especially true as I have not seen you on campus for quite some time due to the pandemic. Please join our alumni social media connections and keep us updated on your accomplishments (which I am sure there will be many)! You will always have a home here at ISNS; never forget this. You are always welcome to come back and visit.

2019-2020 is an exciting year! I know that I have only known you over a relatively short period as this is the first year I joined ISNS. However, I am impressed by the commitment and unity of the ISNS community. Looking back over the 2019-2020 academic year, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our lives. Distance learning was recommended to keep our students and community safe. Then in May 2020, when ISNS received approval to re-open and welcomed students back to school, we felt excited and responsible to ensure that our school was safe for students and teachers to return and get back to their new normal life. Credit goes to our wonderful team who weathered this storm jointly: 1) To our faculty staff, led by our Head of School Mr. David Swanson, who showed great leadership and worked tirelessly to minimize the disruption to our student's learning during this challenging time. 2) To our non-faculty staff, whose dedication to ISNS ensures smooth daily operations and maintains top-level compliance in all areas. Without their contribution, ISNS would not have had a successful re-opening. 3) To the Parents Associations and parent volunteers who generously supported ISNS and donated safety materials to the school when our community was in need. We are grateful for our incredible and amazing parents. Finally, I want to wish you every success for your future, and I leave you with this quote "Let us make our future now, and let us make our dreams tomorrow's reality." I hope you are pursuing your passion and making your dreams a reality!

Dear ISNS community, This has been an eventful and an unusual year for all of us. Nevertheless, as a community we all stepped up and went above and beyond in making this another wonderful and productive school year. At ISNS, our vision is to empower teachers, create strong homeschool partnerships with parents, in order to educate our students as lifelong learners. We model and guide students in communicating, collaborating and thinking critically to help them reach their maximum potential. In the PYP, I have seen students grow in their knowledge and skills in leaps and bounds! This could not have happened without the dedication, commitment and care of "ISNS is indeed our amazing faculty that always place students at the heart of their planning and teaching. Thank you teachers for all of your a c a r i n g , hard work and endless energy throughout this school year. c o n n e c t i n g You are all truly incredible!
and creative community!"
I sincerely thank the parents for your continued support and understanding. It has been a joy to get to know your child and witness the amazing growth they have shown in many areas. It is a privilege to be a part of a community where parents, teachers, students and support staff genuinely care for each other and strive to build positive relationships that support academic and social growth. I hope we will continue to do our very best as always and show that ISNS is indeed a caring, connecting and creative community! Have a wonderful summer break and I look forward to welcoming you all the next school year! Sincerely,
Blessy Monica | Lower PYP Coordinator

Dear ISNS Community, Out of adversity comes opportunity. This year has definitely provided all of us with challenges but I am truly impressed with how our community has approached these challenges as opportunities. At ISNS, we pride ourselves on creating not only a caring learning environment, but one that strives for academic excellence. With the tireless efforts of students, teachers, and parents, we have maintained these standards throughout these unprecedented circumstances. We have continued to prioritze our relationships with each other despite distance and we are engaging in learning experiences that uphold the tenets of the IB. I have personally witnessed our community demonstrate the approaches to learning skills and learner profile attributes as we have transitioned from a strong first half of the year to distance learning. Many students have exercised self-management as they have navigated the online learning platforms and employed thinking skills by connecting their prior knowledge as they adapted to the new learning environment. Teachers have been principled risk takers as they continued to collaborate with colleagues across time zones in order to create innovative, high quality learning experiences to meet the needs of their students.
"We demonstrated the qualities of a globally-minded l e a r n e r by t a k i n g action through the learner profile"
In the true Phoenix spirt, we showed we are capable of rising above adversity. We demonstrated the qualities of a globally-minded learner by taking action through the learner profile attributes and skills. I am so thankful to be a part of this ISNS community and wish you all a very happy, healthy, and relaxing summer vacation. I cannot wait to see everyone next fall!
Sincerely,
Jennifer Nicklas | Upper PYP Coordinator

2020, a year to remember! This year, despite the pandemic that has struck education the world over, we have seen student's producing work of a commendable level and also teachers taking their teaching practice to a whole new level. The words flexibility, adaptability and patience all come to mind when I think of our MYP students this year. I do believe that we have seen growth like never before in the areas of self management skills and resilience too. From Grade 6 students who have just embarked on their MYP journey, to our Grade 10 students who are closing out 5 years of inquiry and interdisciplinary learning and about to begin the next leg in the DP, you have done ISNS proud. Service Learning in the MYP had a soft start this year with Grade 6 and 7 students seeking various ways to meet SL outcomes through after a myriad of opportunities from after school activities to beach cleanups. Our Grade 9 students again amazed us with addressing many authentic needs in the community. There was a strong focus on both the school and local community this year. This year for the first time we will be hosting the exhibition on a virtual platform which will be an option we are investigating as another item to add to our plans for next year. Special thanks to Ms Kathryn Crossman for her guidance and expertise shared with these students. Grade 8 students impressed with an IDU (Interdisciplinary Unit) where they combined Mathematics and Design under the watchful eyes of Mr Anthony Anamalechi and Mr Stephen Kiely. The unit, titled 'Bespoke Furniture' they investigated the concept of furniture, shape and volume. All of these with purpose for a customer.
"f lexibility, adaptability and patience all come to mind when I think of our MYP students t his year."
I also would like to congratulate our Grade 10 students on their exploration through their Personal Project. This year-long project saw many hurdles overcome, specifically independence and self-management. Thank you to Mr James LeBreton for helping guide these students through this culminating MYP project. We wish the class of 2022 all the best as they embark on their final two years at ISNS. My closing thought for the year is, 'The skills you develop today will help you find success tomorrow'.

Dear ISNS community, ISNS students in the Diploma Programme (DP) enjoyed another successful school year. The Class of 2020 is the third cohort at ISNS to successfully complete the DP, continuing a tradition of academic excellence. This year, however, was different, as DP students were tasked with completing their coursework online, during a global pandemic. Both Grade 11 and 12 showed true grit " what it means and great character throughout a school year that was filled with unprecedented challenges that required novel solutions. to be a Phoenix, Through self-determination, the Class of 2020 completed all rising in the DP requirements to successfully earn their diplomas. Using the skills that ISNS strives to develop in each of its students, the face adversity" Class of 2020 and 2021 braved an extraordinary situation by taking ownership of their learning and showed growth as students and individuals in the process. Their DP teachers could not be more proud of them. We applaud the Grade 11 and 12 students for their resilience in the face of such adverse circumstances. The Class of 2020 embodies what it means to be a Phoenix, rising in the face adversity. Thank you, DP students, for being role models for generations of ISNS graduates to come. Sincerely,

During this year’s Week Without Walls, students were fortunate enough to embark on trips within China (Gr 6-8) and within Southeast Asia (Gr 9-11). It also marked our first year having an exciting trip for our graduates outside of Asia as they travelled to Poland and the Czech Republic. During these trips, our students were challenged to learn new culinary skills and take on new active experiences. Students also spent time serving the local community they were in and diving deep into the culture of the area. They experienced culinary delights, important rituals, and many other exciting parts of the new culture they were in. They also learned more about the hardships faced in some of these areas and the importance of empathy, and being caring when in a new culture. Overall, students immensely enjoyed serving those around them, learning new skills, and trying new things. We would like to thank all of the teacher chaperones who attended the Week Without Walls trips; we couldn’t have done it without you!
"students immensely e n j o y e d serving those around them, l e a r n i n g new skills, and trying new t hings."
Kind Regards,
Kathryn Crossman | DP Core Coordinator, Service Coordinator, WWW and EOTC Coordinaotor

Dear Student Athletes, ‘Honour your history, create your own legacy.’ The sporting highlight of the year was when ISNS hosted the High School ACAMIS Volleyball tournament on our very own campus. The tournament gave our student athletes an opportunity to showcase their talents in front of our school community. School spirit was fizzing! We had students of all different ages making posters, creating videos, cheering and chanting, bringing their parents along to support and drumming motivational beats to get the crowd behind our teams. With the support of the school community, both the boys’ and girls’ teams made the finals. The girls went down to the wire, but unfortunately, they finished a commendable 2nd place in a tough league. The boys looked to make amends, by coming out of the gate firing and never looked back, sealing a 3rd ACAMIS volleyball championship in a row. A big thank you to all the staff and student volunteers who helped make this the best tournament of the year! In the SISAC local competition we made 5 out of the 6 top-four playoffs, with the HS boys winning the basketball and the girls winning the volleyball. A huge improvement saw the MS girls go from bottom of the table in the previous year to a final’s contender. The Phoenix also had a strong showing in the PRC. We managed to compete in 6 tournaments this year and finish in the top 2 in 5 tournaments. High school boys again were strong, taking out the volleyball and basketball, with the girls taking out the volleyball. The middle school had a strong showing with both the boys and girls finishing 2nd.
"It’s great to see students looking to build their own Phoenix legacy."
This year we saw the addition of 3 new sports to the programme. MS touch rugby, cross country and track and field. Touch rugby had the most success with a 2nd place finish in a PRC invitational. The ISNS Phoenix athletic program now offers over 18 competitive teams, with over 200 student participants. It’s great to see students looking to build their own Phoenix legacy. Finally, a big thank you to all the coaches and officials. You are what inspires the fire, with your commitment to coaching, officiating, planning and mentoring throughout the season. Without you, these memorable opportunities are not possible for our students. #GoISNS #PhoenixPride #ISNSport #inspirethefire #PhoenixAthletics

Bullying Awareness
Teaching our children at an early age how to be kind and caring towards others is an important part of raising them to be ready for school and life. At ISNS, we take a holistic approach towards child development which incorporates the building of knowledge and skills as well as cultivating good individuals.

Each year, during the ISNS annual Bully Awareness Week, different events and activities are held to help strengthen and inform our community about how we can live a more bully-free life. This year, Grade 7 student, Morgane O., thought that it would be an amazing opportunity for students, teachers, staff, parents and the greater Shenzhen community to have a place where they can not only share their feelings but perhaps encourage others as well. Thus the idea of the Wall of Felings (picture left) was born. We also had other interactive artworks around ISNS during the week, such as the kind poster and the Shout Out Graffiwall. Plus, everyone assembled in the field to create a giant peace crane.

Singing together at PRD MS Honor Choir
Our middle school choir participated in the 2nd Annual Pearl River Delta Middle School Honor Choir event on Thursday, November 7th. This event was hosted by the Nansha College Preparatory Academy and students worked with guest clinician, Laura Pihovich, a well establish vocal teacher at Hong Kong International School. Students prepared four songs that included languages such as Yoruba, Spanish, and English. Our students collaborated with students from, Nansha College Preparatory Academy, Nanshan Chinese International College Immersion School, and Alcanta International College. They worked together to focus not only on themselves and their voices but more importantly, the voices of those around them. Their efforts culminated in a final concert at the end of the day’s rehearsals.

Thank you Yearbook Club contributors. Although this was the most challenging yearbook I’ve been a part of, due to the circumstances, it has also been the most rewarding. Student designers enjoyed more freedom and responsibility than ever before. They collaborated beautifully to come up with a theme, share the workload and deliver a keepsake for the ISNS community to enjoy. Thanks Ms. Carnevale and Arts and Design Department for making the arts pages and the all around support to make this book happen.
Thanks to Ron, Polina, Mr. West, and everyone else for all the great photos. Thanks to Plato for your guidance and the non-faculty team for revisions and distribution. Thanks faculty for checking for errors and being awesome to work with. Thanks to all the clubs; dance, music, arts, makers and drama for all your products and performances. Art is the language of courage.
“But you know, happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light. -Albus Dumbledore Phoenix friends near and far show their love and support for the ISNS community during quarantine. Physical distancing and social solidarity truly make us a caring community.
