Dr. Francis Pang Chairman of the Board What a year this has been. As we thought things were to return to normal, we were hit with another curveball. This has certainly been a challenging time for everyone and on behalf of our board I will like to recognize the amazing job all of our teachers and staff has done to make sure there was less of an disruption to our students as we possible. They have all done an extraordinary job given how tough the situation has gotten. As the school year comes to an end, lets take some time to recognize the achievement of our graduating class. They have been the class that started DP as Covid-19 hit and is still caught in the mist of it. This graduating class is will definitely be prepared for any challenges ahead. ISNS’s class of 2022 has achieve great results and have been accepted to top universities all around the world. We cannot be any prouder of our graduates and wish them all the best in the future. Congratulations! On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to express our gratitude to all the teachers, students, and parents! Together, we have excelled and together we will combat this pandemic.

Joyce Pang Executive Director This year has certainly been challenging As we continue to live in a challenging time, I am very proud of how ISNS as a community has faced and overcome all that was thrown our way. We are living in a time of uncertainty and change, requiring us to ever be so resilient and flexible. Our students have been resilient and independent learners, being able to power through all the obstacles that has come up. We need to applaud our teachers who has been integral to the school and also has stepped up to all the changes to make sure our students are able to keep progressing. Equally as important are our ISNS parents. We want to specially recognize all the support and patience they have given the school throughout this time. The ISNS parent committee has been ISNS’ biggest supporter in making sure the whole school community is safe. As we move onto a new norm, we are especially proud of all our graduates who has embrace this time of uncertainty and made a path truly their own. Congratulations! There will always be up and downs in life, having the experience you have now will certainly enable you to forge ahead. We are very proud of how you have become young adults. ISNS will always be here for you and remember to come back for a visit. Let’s all work together for a safer and healthier future!

ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP David Swanson ISNS Head of School Dear ISNS Students, Congratulations on the successful completion of the 2021-22 academic year! This year has once again been a year full of challenges, but you have shown true resilience through it all. Ernest Hemmingway, the American novelist, became famous as a writer because of his ability to describe the human experience that we all encounter as we face the inevitable challenges presented along the journey of life. Through his stories, he was able to express the deepest feelings we undergo as human beings struggling to find meaning and to make the most of life. One of his most famous novels, “The Old Man and the Sea,” is an epic battle in which Santiago, the old man, confronts the elements and creatures of the sea, which represents life. Ultimately, it is the experience of life that matters. As Ernest Hemmingway later said, “It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.” I have always been pleased and proud that ISNS has chosen the Phoenix as its mascot. The Phoenix is an admirable symbol of resilience and grace. Just as the Phoenix rises up from the ashes, I often see ISNS students rise up to meet the challenges presented by life. Because of the great resilience you all have, I am certain you will rise up again and again each time you face the challenges that life has to offer. We don’t always win the first time, but we don’t give up. We are stronger because of the challenges we face. Enjoy the journey of life, challenges and all!

Addie Loy Director of Program Development Dear ISNS Community, As I reflect on this school year one word comes to mind, resilience. Resilience has been defined as “the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness” (Webster, 2021) As a community, we have been challenged for the last few years and we have persevered and protected our positive school environment. We have met uncertainties and managed them gracefully with strong communication and respect for each stakeholder. These actions define the health of our school. A health that has not declined in the face of challenges, change and uncertainty, but has become stronger. Every interaction I have with our teachers, staff and students reminds me of why I became an educator and how important it is for all of us to create a place that promotes learning and social cohesion. The mission and vision of our school strongly matches my own personal values and every day I see our mission and vision in action in the classroom, within our extra-curricular programs and within the relationships in our community. I am thankful to have participated in the grade 6 Week Without Walls trip and to have been given opportunities to get to know those students. We have successfully launched our Cambridge assessment and test prep program and passed the CIS, WASC and IB evaluation with flying colors. I look forward to my 12th year at ISNS. Go Team Phoenix!

7

Thomas Tucker Lower PYP Principal Another year has come and gone so quickly. As an ISNS community, we had some major school-wide achievements with our WASC/IB and CIS visits. However, we have had countless daily achievements that truly make this year a success. Thank you to our faculty who has continued to model the ISNS mission and vision at every step of this year’s journey. A faculty who continues to go above and beyond and faces challenges with innovation and a growth mindset. It cannot be expressed enough that the faculty at ISNS continually puts the students’ best interest at the forefront of what they do each and every day. We are forever grateful for all you do. Thank you for the unwavering partnership from our caring parent community. This partnership shone brightly again this year and because of this, students learning and development continued regardless of uncontrollable external forces. Thank you for all that you do for our students whether learning at home or in the classroom. Thank you to our resilient and caring students for reminding us to find joy in the small moments, to forgive and forget, and to always lend a caring hand. We work hard to provide you the best opportunity to develop into life-long learners who make the world a better place, but do not underestimate the important lessons you provide us of each day. Each of you is an inspiration and have made this challenging year one we can be proud of. Thank you to our non-faculty team. Without your endless hours of hard work behind the scenes, none of the above would be possible. We appreciate all you do each day. I wish the entire ISNS community a happy, healthy, and safe summer!

8

Ashley Simpson Upper PYP Principal Dear ISNS Community, To our reflective and caring students:

It has been an incredible year of action and inquiry, and I’ve loved seeing your growth and exploration! I’ve had so much fun working with student groups, such as our PYP Assembly Crew, and observing the great things happening in your classrooms and clubs. You have so much to be proud of from the way that you showed perseverance and commitment throughout the At Home Learning Time this spring. Upper PYP, you rock! To our supportive ISNS families: Our Upper PYP Team has missed seeing you on campus, and we’re looking forward to the day when we can have families in our classrooms and hallways once again. A sincere and heartfelt thank you for all that you did to give your child extra support during the At Home Learning period – our team is so grateful for your partnership! To our dedicated faculty: I feel so lucky to be a part of such an innovative, passionate and CARING team of educators. You have shown admirable resilience and dedication as we’ve continued to navigate the obstacles thrown our way by the virus, and each of you always works so hard to make sure your students have everything they need to grow and succeed. It would be impossible to thank you enough for all that you do. To our incredible non-faculty staff: Thank you for the countless things you do ‘behind the scenes’ to support our staff, students, and families. You’ve truly gone above and beyond this spring to ensure our school could safely re-open. Thank you for an excellent 2021-22 academic year! I wish all of our ISNS community members a happy and safe summer ahead.

9

Chris Irvin Middle School Principal Dear ISNS students, parents, and staff, I would like to share my gratitude on behalf of myself and my family to our wonderful Phoenix community. I have a privileged lens into the school: two sons in high school, a wife who works in PYP and my area of focus squarely on middle school. I know that teachers, students and parents have all being doing their best to ensure that they are getting the most out of their ISNS education and the Phoenix school experience in all divisions and that is what helps keep our growing school a caring community. I want to thank the parents, students and teachers that have contributed this year with our accreditation visits for WASC/IB and CIS. These accreditations will help to ensure stability and strength of our faculty present and future and hence improve the learning opportunities for our students. I would also like to thank the parents for their support at home with online learning. I am very proud of our students’ performance. An ancient Chinese proverb is “your teacher can open the door, but you must enter yourself”. Students were very involved in their learning journeys and continued to offer insightful feedback for teachers and leadership so that adjustments could be made to help optimize the online learning experience. As I write this message, we have renewed activities and sports afterschool, our campus is buzzing with gratitude and enthusiasm for being part of the amazing pride of Phoenix. Parents, students, and school staff are all contributing their part in ensuring that we can continue to come to campus and have a safe learning environment. In Latin America they say everyone contributes their “grain of sand” or “granita de arena”. I am grateful to be a part of this caring and collaborative community. Looking forward to continuing the journey with you!

10

Brian Kelley High School Principal Dear ISNS Community, My last five years at ISNS has been incredibly special. I have had the honor of teaching and getting to know remarkable young ISNS Phoenixes, joined forces with our expert faculty to ensure that student learning remains at the forefront of education in Shenzhen and around the world, and collaborated with our caring and determined parent community to enhance the potential for ISNS students to grow and become well-rounded global citizens. Together, we have faced many challenges. Together, we have shared many successes. And together, we have re-shaped what education looks like today. We have adapted and entered a new era of education which is guided by our shared priority; the well-being and safeguarding of our ISNS students’ health and education. Through resilience and care, our students continue to thrive and our overarching mission to “care locally, thrive globally” lives on. Despite unforeseen circumstances thrown our way, our High School students prevailed! In true ISNS Phoenix spirit, students continued to represent the school through a variety of school activities, events, and sporting events. Our school jumped at the opportunity to attend the Week Without Walls trips, which gave students the opportunity to develop skills outside of the classroom and demonstrate what it means to be a global citizen. This year, students also displayed their zeal for language by creating two publications, Taihua and Lighthouse. These publications are a compilation of short stories and poems written by our student body, celebrating their passion for writing in Mandarin and English. Our high school students continue to shine through their academic achievements! The Grade 9 students successfully completed their Community Project, working together to support local and global communities. The skills they develop during this project not only build awareness and character, but also prepare them for their culminating project in Grade 10 – the Personal Project. Grade 10 students completed and showcased their Personal Projects with pride. A true testament to their IB development, each students’ projects shared their knowledge of ATL skills and demonstrated what it means to a balanced, reflective, and open-minded learner. Our DP students continued to impress, with the Class of 2022 setting its sights on achieving the highest DP scores an ISNS cohort has ever achieved since becoming an IB authorized school. Following the pedigree of success that we have become accustomed to at ISNS, the Class of 2022 was accepted to top Universities around the world including multiple offers from top 50 global universities, with several of them being top 10 in the US and UK, including an Ivy League school. We could not be prouder of this cohort, especially given that for some of our graduates, ISNS has been their “forever school”. As this is my final year at ISNS, I would like to thank the students, parents, and teachers that made ISNS such a special place to be a part of these last five years. I have so many cherished memories and I am proud to have been able to watch our students and our school become an inspirational force in Shenzhen and abroad. To be a Phoenix means something. It means that you are a hardworking, globally minded, principled, balanced, risk-taker that cares about your community and that you strive to have a positive impact on the world we live in. I will always be a Phoenix and I thank you for all the lessons I have learned during my time here. #GOISNS

IB COORDINATORS Blessy Monica Lower PYP Coordinator Dear ISNS community, 2021-2022 has been a wonderful school year though also eventful and an unusual year for all of us. Nevertheless, as a community we all stepped up and went above and beyond in making this another successful and productive school year. At ISNS, our vision is to empower teachers, create strong homeschool partnerships with parents, in order to educate our students as lifelong learners. I believe that amidst the many challenges we still did this to the best of our abilities. We model and guide students in communicating, collaborating and thinking critically to help them reach their maximum potential. In the PYP, I have witnessed students grow in their knowledge and skills in leaps and bounds! This could not have happened without the dedication, commitment and care of our amazing faculty that always place students at the heart of their planning and teaching. Thank you, teachers for all your hard work and endless energy throughout this school year. You are all truly incredible! I sincerely thank the parents for your continued support and understanding. It has been a joy to get to know your child and witness the amazing growth they have shown in many areas. It is a privilege to be a part of a community where parents, teachers, students and support staff genuinely care for each other and strive to build positive relationships that support academic, social and holistic growth and development. I hope we will continue to do our very best as always and show that ISNS is indeed a caring, connecting and creative community! Even though this is my last school year at ISNS, I am leaving with memories that I will always cherish. ISNS is truly unique in its ethos, and I am proud that I have been a member of this community the past 5 years. It was an honor to work with all stakeholders who were committed to not only their own success but also others. As they say, the international school world is rather small, so I know this is not ‘Goodbye’ yet and I sure hope our paths cross again in the future (I know it will). Have a wonderful summer break!

12

Jennifer Nicklas Upper PYP Coordinator Dear ISNS Family, Once again, ISNS has shown unbelievable resilience and strength in the face of adversity. Despite the continued uncertainty, I have witnessed tremendous growth and success. Most importantly I have experienced the unfathomable depth of caring that this community has for each other. Our students have made academic growth, developed their Approaches to Learning skills, and most importantly demonstrated what it means to be an IB learner by modeling the IB Learner Profile Attributes. They have persevered through different rounds of online learning and shown up every day, ready to learn. Thank you to all of our amazing ISNS students for making up the heart of our school community. Our parent partnerships have flourished throughout this past year. I have really enjoyed all of the learning and accomplishments we have achieved together. It has been an honor to work with this group of parents so dedicated to making ISNS the best learning community in Shenzhen. Thank you to all the parents who continue to make our school a truly special place to be. The ISNS teachers are some of the most resilient and adaptable group of educators I have ever worked with. Throughout all of the hurdles of online learning, they maintained a graceful sense of humor and focus on the wellbeing of their students. The creativity and innovation that emerged out of this experience was inspiring to say the least. Thank you to all of our talented and dedicated ISNS teachers. As the school year draws towards the close, I reflect upon everything with a sincere gratitude. While this year’s journey has not been straightforward, I am thankful for every twist and turn because it has shown the true spirit of ISNS. To be a part of that, I consider myself immeasurably fortunate. I wish you all a relaxing summer holiday. I hope you are able to reflect upon all of the amazing things you have done and come back fully charged for another great year at ISNS.

13

Ernie Boyd MYP Coordinator Dear ISNS community, It has once again been an honor and a privilege to be part of the academic journey of the students from Grades 6 to 10. I am impressed with the resilience demonstrated, and the dedication to education executed in both the teaching and learning in the aforementioned grades. There are many highlights that could be shared with you, the reader, but I have handpicked a few that speak of the power of the continuum, dedication to service and true demonstration of the learner profile attributes. I will start with us welcoming our Grade 6 students into their first year of the MYP and having seen them develop over the past year. They have taken up the challenge that the MYP poses and really proved that their years in the PYP developing the Learner Profile Attributes have prepared them well and I look forward to the balance of their journey at ISNS. Grade 7 students diving into a Service-Learning Unit in Individuals and Societies and making a positive change in our school community. Some of the changes instituted over the years from this unit are still in place around the campus. The Grade 8 Interdisciplinary Unit between Design and Maths is still a strong favorite of mine where students engage in the design process with teachers as the ‘client’ and have again produced innovative products based on the specifications set. Grade 9 students for being risk takers on their Week Without Walls trip where they learned to surf and had a wonderful outdoor experience. Special thanks go to Ms. Brenda Williams for organizing trips at this time of uncertainty, yet still setting the platform for challenges and wonderful opportunities for us all. Grade 10 for completing their Personal Project in true style. The breadth of the projects this year speaks volumes to the input of Mr. Lebreton along with his team of supervisors. We are confident that this year we will continue to excel and have results well above the global average. All in all, we are proud of the parents for supporting the students at home, teachers for guiding the students at school and most importantly the students for making use of the opportunities presented to them. Go Team Phoenix!

14

Sean Carroll DP Coordinator Students in the Diploma Programme (DP) had another highly successful year, overcoming all challenges they faced. A year that was largely uninterrupted by Online-Learning and other restrictions, allowed for our high school students to participate in many of the usual extra-curricular activities. ISNS DP students went on the first Grade 11&12 combined Week Without Walls trip to Dameisha, where most students learnt to sail for the first time. The Grade 11 DP students have commenced their Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) experience this year. All of our Grade 11 students have also been working hard on their Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) portfolios. This creative group of students have commenced a wide range of meaningful and considered CAS projects this year. Our Grade 12 class of 2022 successfully managed their time, finalizing their university applications while completing EEs, IAs, IOs and a range of other assessments. Several of these graduates have been at ISNS since their primary school years, and have left a lasting impact on a wide range of clubs, activities and sporting teams. What this group has achieved, despite the challenges of the last three years, is truly remarkable. Their teachers look forward to hearing about their successes in the years to come. I hope that you all have a relaxing and safe summer holiday. We look forward to seeing the class of 2023 back in school for their final year of high school!

NON-FACULTY Layla Zhang Vice Director of Operations Dear ISNS Community, Thank you all sincerely for another fruitful and amazing school year! I am very grateful that I can be part of such a united, caring, and loving community, where everyone is trying their best to keep ISNS a safe and healthy place for our students and staff. The unity of ISNS has shown our strong will to overcome all challenges along the way, and by overcoming them, makes us stronger and more fearless to all difficulties lying ahead. Whether it’s the frontline teaching faculty who have dedicated tremendously to both online and in-class teaching, or the Operations Team who have worked devotedly behind the scenes to provide support, you all made a difference, your contribution to ISNS cannot and will not be ignored. Most importantly, parents’ support and understanding are the greatest encouragement for us to improve and move forward! At last, congratulations to our graduating class of 2021-2022! Nate Talamahina Athletic Director Dear Students and Parents, This year has not been without its challenges for athletics and physical education. However, we continue to see our school community rise and overcome the challenges as they arrive. Covid has reminded us to not take opportunities for granted and to cherish the opportunities to play sports with our friends and compete against others. The school year started in the fall with lots of promise and an unprecedented level of interest in sports, especially amongst our middle school girls’ teams. High school volleyball was back for the first time since ACAMIS 2019. The high school girls’ team showed plenty of promise but ended up on the wrong side of some close games. The team found their groove during the PRC tournament, where they finished in second place. The boys’ team was thin on experience, and they will look to build on it for the 2022-2023 season. The high school basketball season was a difficult one for both the boys and girls. With young sides and lots to learn, this was going to be a development year for both teams. Both the boys’ and the girls’ teams kept positive attitudes and determination to get better every time they stepped on the court. Both teams bonded well to create a positive and supportive network within. Next year, both teams will continue to build on what they have been working on to come out even stronger. The most consistent team this year was the middle school girls’ soccer team. This team was dominant from the outset with a record of 11 wins and 1 loss, 46 goals for, and only 3 conceded. The girls ended the season as SISAC Champions as well as PRC Champions. Another young group, the middle school boys, had one of their best seasons to date, finishing second in the PRC and just missing the SISAC top 4. With a good core of grade 6 students returning next year, this will be an exciting team to watch. Touch rugby, a relatively new sport to ISNS, saw some promising results. Both teams qualified for the SISAC Top 4, the middle school boys ended up finishing in third place, whilst the middle school girls finished another season as SISAC Champions! I wish to express my thanks to those who have led our students throughout these uncertain times. You all worked tirelessly to keep our students healthy and active, whilst maintaining a positive outlook. Without your dedicated support, cooperation, and assistance these opportunities for our students are not possible. Congratulations to all the student-athletes. Although cut short, this year has once again been a great success due to the commitment and sacrifice you all make to help build on the legacy of a phoenix student-athlete. To the outgoing seniors, you have been challenged to set your goals high, stretch yourself, and to be industrious in all that you do. You have also been taught that athletics is a preparation for life and what you learn from being on a team is a microcosm of life. You can all go forward with a piece of mind, knowing that you added to the legacy and helped to inspire the next generation coming through. Rise and overcome. Inspire the fire.
