This year has certainly been challenging for students, parents, teachers, staff, and administrators. The pandemic has certainly changed the norm for everyone and the world. Through all the uncertainties and changes that has been happening, we need to applaud ourselves for how we have proven to be resilient and adaptable to anything. For the past year, the situation has pushed everyone to explore new ways to communicate and to work together, pushing forward the use of technology in education. To our Graduates, this may have been an unconventional year but through your hard work and determination you will be graduating and set to embark on another journey in life. Remember that ISNS will always be here for you and rooting for you. Wishing you all success!
Joyce Pang | Executive Director

ACADEMIC LEADERship
David Swanson Head of School Dear Students, I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to serve as the Head of School at ISNS for the 202021 Academic Year. There was a time when the future was extremely uncertain and none of us knew what to expect. Fortunately, things turned out well. Nearly all students and teachers were able to make it back on campus to resume live classes. I now have a much deeper appreciation for everything and everyone that makes ISNS what it is. There were still many challenges this year, but everyone faced them head-on with an exceptionally positive attitude. Teachers provided a lot of extra support so that students could be successful. As one student put it, “teachers gave us an airbag so we didn’t crash.” Our community made the most of the situation despite the many restrictions. We appreciated the benefits we had all the more. There was no choice but to do what needed to be done, and that is exactly what ISNS did, without complaint. As Robert Ingersoll so adeptly said, “We rise by lifting others.” Navigating the Covid crisis was not easy for anyone but we made it through as a school, better than most, because of how our students and teachers persevered together. ISNS community members truly demonstrated care for each other amid the difficulties they faced. The future is still somewhat uncertain, but we all have gained strength as a result of the past challenges. Just as Oprah Winfrey once put it, “where there is no struggle, there is no strength”. I am certain that ISNS students are well prepared to flourish and succeed. I feel truly fortunate that ISNS is such an incredible community. *Special thanks to Ms. Kocay’s Grade 9 Language and Literature Class for assisting with this message.

Addie Loy Director of Program Development This school year, much like the last, two billion children, adolescents and young adults had to miss school, or had their schooling disrupted. Teachers had to adapt to new ways of teaching online and we all faced uncertainty. Although things are better in China, we cannot forget that many children are still out of school and the effects of this will last for years. At ISNS we are fortunate, we have been able to bounce back and our students are resilient. We show our resilience through our commitment to collaboration between our faculty, staff and parents as we ensure that our students are thriving in a safe environment. Schools around the world are bonding together through this crisis and my sincere hope is that this changes the way we view equitable education and world-wide collaboration. Everyday we show our school spirit and pride by participating in events, supporting each other and doing our best. ISNS faculty are committed to the growth of our students and to keeping the learning environment positive. ISNS students are smart, mindful and caring. Considering the struggles we have faced, it is heartwarming to see ISNS as a place of love and growth. Congratulations to our graduates. Your journey will be individually unique, and you may at times have challenges. Remember to reach out to those that care for you the most and reflect on your achievements and struggles to set personal goals for your development. I have no doubt that you will have a bright future. Remember to make choices that make you happy and always do your best.

Thomas Tucker Lower PYP Principal The entire ISNS community continued to exemplify the IB Learner Profile Attributes as we began the 20202021 academic year. Thanks to the hard work of our non-faculty team behind the scenes, we started the year with students back on campus. That paired with the anticipation of the return of our administration and teachers created an energetic excitement in the air. What became more evident this year is the reflective, open-minded and caring characteristics of our ISNS community. While I look forward to the day the campus is fully opened to our community and physical gate is no longer a barrier, I am happy that I continued to see the risk-taking students arrive happily each morning and enter through the gate with enthusiasm ready to thrive. I equally enjoyed the opportunity to be at the gate each afternoon seeing the same students head out to apply their learning from the day. Over the year this has become a time-lapse video in my memory, and it is amazing to see the growth over a year. I want to thank our educational leaders and teachers for their undying commitment to continuing to make ISNS a school that puts students’ academic and social-emotional development above all else. We are blessed to have caring and professional educators that truly embody the IB Learner Profiles Attributes in all they do each day. I want to thank our parent community as well. While we strived for normalcy with the start of the year, we acknowledge that it was still not in our comfort zone. Your continued commitment to ISNS and your children’s education has made all the difference. With your support we not only survived another unique year, we thrived in the challenges we faced as a community. I want to especially thank our students, who have been a constant reminder of the power of resilience. Each day they come to school and navigate big world problems the best they can. You have all grown so much over this past year and have a lot to be proud of. Thank you for making ISNS a caring, open-minded school full of risk-taking inquirers. As we head into a much-deserved summer holiday, I want you all to think of how each of you persevered through the challenges because you stood strong yet open-minded, felt vulnerable yet continued being a risk-taker, and felt frustration/worry/uncertainty, yet never stopped being caring each and every day. We are a lucky community!!

Ashley Simpson Upper PYP Principal Dear ISNS Community, To our knowledgeable and caring students: The highlight of each day is talking with you about your learning and your interests. From our PYP Ambassadors to our Junior Eco Squad, you are taking action in important ways; from sharing ideas during collaboration to performing on stage, you are taking risks and putting growth mindset into action. Spending the Week Without Walls with our Grade 5 cohort and seeing these students succeed throughout the PYP Exhibition has been both a lot of fun and a major honour. I hope that each Upper PYP student is proud of their growth this year! To our caring ISNS families: Our faculty feels the impact of your care and support each day at school. Thank you for your communication, your trust, and your partnership. You are such a valued part of our ISNS community. To our innovative and passionate faculty: Your commitment to your students’ growth, success and happiness is inspiring. Your dedication to innovation in your practice is powerful. I feel eternally blessed to be part of a professional community that is so dedicated to developing the very best in the young people entrusted to us. To our incredible non-faculty staff: Thank you for all you do to make our environment safe, clean, organized, and running ever so smoothly. Most of your work is done ‘behind the scenes,’ but creates the foundation for the success of our academic team. I hope that everyone has a wonderful summer, and I will look forward to another excellent year with our community in 2021-22!

Chris Irvin | MYP Principal Dear ISNS students, parents, and staff, I would like to express my gratitude, on behalf of myself and my family, for your consistent contribution to the wonderful Phoenix community. As you are aware, last year (our first year at ISNS), was not a regular year. This year has been much more “normal”, even if there are elements of the “new normal” to it. In my yearbook post from last year, I referred to the ancient Greek philosopher Homer and his famous Odyssey. The lessons from this story are still relevant for modern times. The educational journey that Homer embarks on is still applicable to today’s learners. We all have different paths and footsteps to take through school and through life, what matters is how we approach these adventures and what we learn from them. I would like to reflect on a Chinese Proverb that also expresses the importance of learning for each of us in our own journey through life: “Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere.” I feel that this embodies the attitude of the lifelong learner that ISNS teachers are living, and inspiring in students, each day. The skills that we have developed and learned in the last year will remain with us in years to come and continue to guide our growth. One of IB’s strengths is the development of a growth mindset, focused on the continued improvement of important life skills. As Malcom X says, “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today”. The IB philosophy helps to prepare students for an unknown future, where skills and Approaches to Learning (ATL) - as opposed to memorization, recall, and contextual knowledge - will define success and failure. The two skills that have proved to be instrumental during online and remote working and learning have been COMMUNICATION (an ATL skill and IB Learner Profile) and SELF REGULATION (an ATL skill). With learning boundaries between home and work blurred, and collaboration with colleagues taking place from different parts of the globe, these ATL skills have been heavily relied on. I know that ISNS’s focus on developing and improving these skills in our students is critical to their future success. Wishing you a wonderful summer.

Brian Kelley | DP Principal Reflecting on the 20-21 school year, I can whole-heartedly say that our community came together to exemplify what it truly means to care locally and thrive globally. An unprecedented year for all, families around the world faced and continue to face immense challenges. Despite these challenges, our community remains a force to be reckoned with, showing extraordinary care and support like none-other. I was proud to be a part of a teaching community that showed tremendous resiliency and ingenuity and took action to ensure that teaching and learning continued to inspire children every day. I am thankful to our community for the grit and determination you showed to guarantee students were able to receive the high-quality education ISNS offers. January 2021 proved to be a new beginning. The campus was buzzing with excitement as students and most of the teaching staff inhabited classrooms again. Daily routines resumed and a sense of normalcy returned. After a long hiatus, the introduction of afterschool activities and sports was a huge morale booster for our community. Our phoenix proudly represented ISNS at ACAMIS tournaments, competing against students from both Shenzhen and Guangzhou - and the fire once again ignited school spirit. Students were also able to participate in the Week Without Walls (WWW) trips, scattered around China; the adventures were a huge success. WWW allowed students to challenge themselves outside of the classroom, applying their skills to unique situations. Students had the opportunity to connect with their peers and teachers in different ways; working together in groups to complete challenges, conquer fears, push their limits, reflect on their time away from school, and value collaboration and commitment with and from teammates. I want to commend the Class of 2021 who are projected to make ISNS history earning the best DP scores to date. Students this year have been accepted to top Universities around the world including multiple offers from top 50 global universities, with several of them being top 10 in the US and UK. Many of the graduating class have been with ISNS since grade 6 and are a shining example of what an ISNS education looks like. On behalf of the School, I want to thank the Class of 2021 for their tireless dedication and hard work to their studies and their contributions to their local and global communities. Their love for learning, support of one another and tenacity for success embodies what it means to be an ISNS phoenix. We wish them nothing but the best as they embark on the next part of their journey, and I look forward to watching them reach their dreams. We are phoenix and we rise from the ashes! That is exactly what we did as a school this year and I could not be more thankful for our school, students, parents, teachers, and our community. I can’t wait to see what next year brings!

IB Coordinators Blessy Monica | Lower PYP Coordinator Dear ISNS community, The 2020-2021 school year has whizzed by so fast and was nothing short of amazing! Even amidst the unusual circumstance we continue to find ourselves in, I have witnessed our community being stronger and resilient than ever before. In the PYP, students have shown their love for learning and been inquirers and risktakers in their learning journey! Their growth is evident in all areas and it is a pleasure to be a part of their learning and personality development. At ISNS, we have dedicated educators who are student-centered and committed to creating global-minded citizens and life-long learners. Without your passion, hard work and kindness, ISNS wouldn’t be the same. Thank you for innovating each day and putting our students at the heart of your planning and teaching! I sincerely thank the parents for your continued support and understanding. It has been a joy to get to know your child and witness their growth in all areas. It is a privilege to be a part of a community where parents, teachers, students and support staff genuinely care for each other and strive to build positive relationships. I hope we will continue to do our very best as always and show that ISNS is indeed a caring community! Have a restful summer break and I look forward to welcoming you all the next school year!
Jennifer Nicklas | Upper PYP Coordinator Dear ISNS Community, I continue to be impressed by all of the growth and positivity our school demonstrates in everything we do. This year has been marked by reflection as we delved into our IB evaluation and WASC accreditation. While it involved a lot of hard work, it has been enjoyable to think back on all of the great things we have accomplished and see how far we have come as a school. The yearbook also marks a time to reflect, to remember all of the wonderful events, friendships, and achievements. It is clear from all the smiles in the photos that we have definitely had a lot of fun and made a lot of memories. As I flip through the pages, I feel a sense of pride and gratitude for being part of such an amazing community of teachers, staff, students, and parents. We have a lot to be thankful for this year. I wish everyone of you a restful summer vacation. I hope you get to have some new adventures and try some new things! Have a wonderful break and I look forward to all the great things to come next year. Go Phoenix!

Ernie Boyd | MYP Coordinator This year was a year of challenge and opportunity. With challenges come opportunities. Challenges birth opportunity. Challenges = Opportunity. This year has presented students, teachers and parents with many challenges. The uncertainty of the global state of affairs and even social interaction being just the tip of the iceberg. For this very reason I am so grateful that we are an IB school. The MYP is all about understanding the challenge, creating an action plan and putting it into practice. Observing the teachers and students I have seen many of them do just that. Humans are gregarious by nature and much of this had to be relearnt in the classroom. Teachers have fostered this through realigning activities and assessments with an acute understanding of what is required. The result has been growth, growth growth. This can be seen in the outstanding work presented, across the board, in assessments and also the service initiatives in the Individuals and Societies department where students put in place small actions to bring about big change. The Physical and Health Education department with many sporting opportunities where there were none. A wonderful Science fair run in a more environmentally friendly manner. The Arts department running the usual slew of performances and even added an additional one collaborating with two other local schools. Close to the end of the academic year there was even student-initiated participation in a locally run business competition in which our students excelled. With this I thank the parents for their support, the teachers for their passion for their vocation and the students for perseverance and desire to learn.
Sean Carroll | DP Coordinator The students in the Diploma Programme (DP) have had a challenging but rewarding year. The year began under extraordinary circumstances, with a staggered return to campus for students and teachers alike. Thankfully life at ISNS has now returned to relative normality. We have seen the re-commencement of high school sports, assemblies, art exhibitions, concerts, and even the DP students’ favourite event, mock exams! The Grade 11 students started their extended essay (EE) journey this year, along with being the first cohort to engage with the new TOK Exhibition process. Our Grade 12 class of 2021 have completed their EE, Internal Assessments, engaged in a range of meaningful CAS experiences, all while still finding the time to complete all their university applications. The class of 2021 have been a core group of the ISNS community, as they have made a huge contribution to the growing student-lead culture at ISNS. Their teachers genuinely believe that this cohort are destined for great things. They have had a challenging two years, with on-line-learning disrupting their DP journey. However, their hard work and positive attitude to overcoming all challenges has allowed the class of 2021 to succeed despite the circumstances. Their presence on campus will be greatly missed but we are excited to see what they will all develop, create, and produce in the future! #GOPHOENIX

Nate Talamahina | Athletic Director Dear ISNS Student-Athletes, For months, we faced an opponent that wore no uniform. As Phoenix athletes, you took on this opponent with the fierceness we would expect from our studentathletes. I believe you have proven that despite the unprecedented COVID-19 situation, you are all strong and resilient. I commend all of you for pushing through these unusual circumstances and continuing to make the most of a truly difficult time. Our coaches and staff still worked hard, focusing on caring for each of you during this time as well as skill development and conditioning. The spring season was a highlight for many student athletes as they could compete with other schools around Shenzhen. High School soccer saw the Phoenix break new ground on and off the field. The high school girls finished the season, equal top of the table at ACAMIS only to finish second on goal differential, whist the boys have a young team and plenty of talent to work with. MS girls’ volleyball also provided another season highlight as they rounded out the season unbeaten SISAC Champions! A great way to send off long time coach K. Rutherford. Phoenix athletics has a bright future with many young students ready to step into the spotlight and take their opportunity. To the outgoing seniors, you have built on the legacy of what it means to be a Phoenix student athlete. I thank you for your contributions and wish you all the best.
