Loughborough University

n Covering more than 438 acres, Loughborough University

is the largest single-site campus in the UK.

including world-class sporting amenities, internationally acclaimed research centres and state-of-the-art academic buildings.

n Loughborough is ranked in the top 20 of UK universities in

national league tables and has been awarded six Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education in recognition of its world leading research.

n It is the UK’s premier university for sport and its

underpinning academic disciplines, resulting in its selection as the official preparation camp for Team GB in the run up to the London 2012 Olympics. More than 90 Loughborough-linked athletes competed in the Olympic and Paralympic Games, winning 13 medals.

research and enterprise n Loughborough is renowned for world-class research and its application in partnership with business, public and voluntary organisations to create social, cultural and economic impact. n

The campus is home to more than 40 research centres and institutes, five interdisciplinary research schools in Design, Health and Life Sciences, Sustainability, Systems Engineering and Materials, and two Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Centres for Innovative Manufacturing in Intelligent Automation and Regenerative Medicine.

The quality of the University’s research was confirmed by the results of the most recent national Research Assessment Exercise. Every academic department was found to be undertaking research that is internationally recognised, with 18% of the University’s research judged to be ‘world leading’.

n Research Council income represents 50% of Loughborough’s total externally funded research activity. The University is also recognised as a strategic partner and holds ‘Framework’ status with the EPSRC. n

Loughborough has long standing collaborative links with many public and private sector organisations. Examples include the British Heart Foundation National Centre for Physical Activity and Health, the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre and the Caterpillar Innovation and Research Centre.

The University has a track record in commercialising leading-edge research. Global power technology company Intelligent Energy is founded on University research and is now valued at $0.5 billion. Loughborough also boasts a thriving student and graduate enterprise community and actively supports 10 new graduate businesses a year in The Studio.

More than 50 tenant partners are based on campus, in or around the University’s Science and Enterprise Park with a workforce of 1,700. Planned expansion will double the size of the park, enabling even more companies to benefit from proximity to Loughborough’s R&D base and skilled graduate supply.

Loughborough is the UK’s premier university for sport, resulting in its selection by the British Olympic Association as the official preparation camp for Team GB in the run up to London 2012. More than 90 Loughborough-linked athletes competed in the Olympic and Paralympic Games, winning 13 medals.

Some of the most celebrated names in sport – including world record breaking athletes Sebastian Coe, Paula Radcliffe, David Moorcroft and Steve Backley; probably the greatest-ever Paralympian Tanni Grey-Thompson; England cricketer Monty Panesar; and World Cup winning England rugby coach Clive Woodward – have all studied at the University.

Loughborough’s School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences is world renowned for its research. Its work to understand the interplay between exercise and disease has been recognised as part of the 2012 Olympic legacy, with a £10 million Department of Health award to build a National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine on the campus.

The Sports Technology Institute works with global brands, including adidas, Callaway Golf, Canterbury of New Zealand, Dunlop, Head, New Balance, Nike, Reebok, Slazenger, Spalding, Speedo and Umbro on the design, simulation, testing and manufacture of sporting goods. Its track record of design-led innovation and accelerating novel concepts from initial stages through to commercialisation is unparalleled.

The campus is home to SportPark, a key national hub for sports development and a centre for sharing, innovation and creative working. Tenants include British Swimming/Amateur Swimming Association, Sport England, the Youth Sport Trust and the English Federation of Disability Sport, to name a few.

student experience n The University has a student population of more than 16,000, including a thriving international community from over 100 different countries. n Loughborough has been voted England’s ‘Best Student Experience’ for six years running in the Times Higher Education poll. n Teaching at the University has consistently been rated excellent in independent assessments, placing Loughborough towards the top of the teaching quality tables. n More than 80% of Loughborough’s undergraduate courses offer a career-enhancing year-long placement in business, industry, the professions or overseas studies. n Loughborough is one of the top 15 universities targeted by large graduate employers, with more Loughborough graduates in high quality employment compared to the national average. n The campus is home to one of the biggest independently owned Students’ Unions, with more than 100 clubs and societies and a hugely successful student fundraising RAG organisation. n

Loughborough University Arts offers a diverse range of cultural activities for students, staff and the local community. This includes concerts and spoken word events and tuition in music, painting and pottery. There is also the University’s contemporary arts programme Radar, which responds to the history, research and surroundings of the University.
