Leadership and Management
Welcome It is a very real pleasure to welcome you to a unique and exciting joint venture between the BSA and Loughborough University’s School of Business and Economics. This BSA Leadership and Management Programme is designed to equip today’s leaders and those of tomorrow at building societies and other customer-owned financial services businesses with the skills needed to meet the strategic and management challenges they face in an environment where competition and regulation are constantly increasing. The structured, but flexible, programme has been designed and tailored specifically for building societies and other financial mutuals bearing in mind the key characteristics of this form of business. The modules in the programme cover the topics and skill requirements that are necessary to all financial services businesses, together with elements that are particular to the mutual sector. The topics in the programme cover areas such as risk management; governance; values based decision making; the analysis of the competitive environment; trends in personal sector finance; the impact and responses to regulation; and organisational resilience, amongst many others. Loughborough University has a well-established reputation in the subject areas covered by the programme. The various modules draw on the expertise in the school as well as the external academic and practitioner talent available to them. The school has substantial expertise and experience in constructing and delivering professional development programmes in the financial sector and also more widely. It also has a well-established reputation, stretching over decades, in the analysis and support of the mutual sector in general and building societies in particular.
In the past, the BSA has funded ground-breaking research into the analysis of mutuality and the important role of building societies in the financial system. In addition, the university has assisted several building societies in their preparation of mutuality defence documents at the time when many were under pressure to convert. The university’s research has not been restricted to the UK but also, in co-operation with one of Europe’s leading Think Tanks (the Centre for European Policy Studies in Brussels), to the role of co-operative financial institutions elsewhere in Europe. The programme will introduce participants to relevant experience and lessons which can be drawn from other countries and also other industries such as retail and manufacturing. The BSA’s initiative in sponsoring this dedicated, tailormade programme could not come at a more opportune time for the sector, and we at Loughborough University look forward with enthusiasm to developing and delivering the programme in conjunction with the BSA and the advisory group drawn from its membership.

Developing Professionals for the Mutual Sector The programme is being designed directly with the sector rather than for the sector, reflecting the needs, views and experience of a number of different but representative societies working together as an advisory group:
ROBIN FIETH Chief Executive, Building Societies Association
Talent Development and the Leaders of Tomorrow Our people. Our staff. Our teams. The need to invest in and develop today’s leaders and those of tomorrow, these are universal themes for Chief Executives, Chairmen, Boards and our regulators. Business development courses are of course legion, but this programme is unique. It has that vital extra dimension of leadership and management in a mutual organisation woven right through it.
Access to senior manager development has, until now, been limited with high costs and no Masters’ tailored to the challenges of the mutual model. This programme will help overcome both barriers and assist our talent-retention and succession planning. David Webster, CEO Hanley Economic
As well as the kudos of an applicable and practical qualification from a recognised business school this programme, based on academic and practitioner expertise, brings an external view of the ethos of mutuality. Sian Ferguson, Talent and Executive Development Team, Nationwide

Integral to our People Strategy is the desire to identify, nurture and grow our talented people as future leaders. This programme fits perfectly as a development route for our high potential people. Anne Mellors, Head of HR, Nottingham
This programme is designed to suit our needs. I see participants beginning to show a return on the investment in them quickly through application of their learning. Tim Spackman, Head of Organisational Design, Skipton
This programme gives my society the opportunity to develop an individual with potential who otherwise wouldn’t realise it. We don’t have time or resource to develop our own MSc so this bespoke but off the shelf option is ideal. Martin Reason, CEO, Melton Mowbray
Leadership and Management
To perform well, all organisations rely on talented, well informed leaders and managers making good decisions. With the ever increasing pace of change it is more important than ever that employees are equipped with the leadership and management capabilities to adapt to new scenarios and make effective decisions. Designed in conjunction with the BSA and a representative group of members, this programme aims to ensure that member organisations are as resilient as possible to meet the future challenges on the horizon, driven by innovative and self-assured employees. As such, the programme will impart critical management and leadership skills and an awareness of some key issues and challenges that face the mutual sector, including: ¡ Managing risk ¡ Leading change ¡ Governance and transparency The programme will enable organisations to retain and develop talent, build leadership and management capability and help underpin professional development within the organisation. As individuals hand-picked by their organisation, programme participants will feel empowered, valued and motivated to succeed and will form valuable networking contacts with other participants. The programme will be deliberately challenging to stretch participants and teach them how to apply management theory in practice, adapt to new scenarios and implement effective solutions.
