LOUGHBOROUGH STUDENTS RFC V ROTHERHAM TITANS
RHYS EDWARDS
DIRECTOR OF RUGBY Welcome to our Members* and supporters to Loughborough University, where today we host Rotherham Titans in another Round of National 2 North. It is great to welcome a club I have a strong affinity to, having coached there in the 20162017 season. The club has a proud history and it is great to see them build on the solid start to the season. They will be looking to continue this today I’m sure, and it will be a challenge for our young squad. Our victory last week against Harrogate (A) was another step forward and a pleasing win away from home. We will be keen to get back on the rubber crumb and play our brand of rugby today. We also welcome Leroy O’Neil to the squad this weekend, who comes to us on loan from Northampton Saints, welcome to the #LoughboroughFamily. Our great start to BUCS rugby has continued this week with both BUCS Super Rugby and BUCS 2 continuing their unbeaten home record. The BSR squad impressively saw off a strong Cardiff Met side in a thriller 37-33, to keep us 2nd in the table. Whilst our BUCS 2 squad maintained their Unbeaten run with a thunderous 60 – 12 win against Bishop Burton. I am really pleased to also welcome many of our distinguished Alumni today who are back together on campus for a day of reminiscing and storytelling. Our proud history as a club is something that we welcome to celebrate
and I hope you all enjoy the day, and seeing this generation continue to carry the Loughborough Flag. All the best to everyone today Rhys Director of Rugby Any further information regarding membership, Please contact rugby@lboro.ac.uk for more information.

A close quarter battle endured between the two sides, leading to tries from Phillipson and Shine, both in similar style – crashing over close to the line in the near phase after quick tap penalties from Loughborough.
Loughborough hosts Huddersfield as both sides eagerly search for a win to swing their season’s momentum. The students strike first in the early minutes of the game, with Will Trinder dotting an intercepted pass underneath the posts. After a brief spell of phase play from Huddersfield the home team retaliated with a successful penalty from Will Miller.
In the dying moment of the half, Huddersfield switched pace as Liam Stapley tumbled over in the corner, picking from the back of a well-executed mauling drive. Half time score Huddersfield 11 – 21 Loughborough. At the restart, an early yellow card in the 42nd minute for Huddersfield’s Ed Brown gave Loughborough a man advantage, eventually leading to a try for Karl Warner in the 51st minute from collecting
Alex Wainwright’s chip over the top. Despite the disheartening scoring, Huddersfield over the next 20 minutes would hit back hard to gain the lead, with tries from Kian Stewart and Lewis Bradley setting them 3 points up with 10 to play. As the game entered its dying moments, Loughborough were desperate for a 5-point win. Penalties in quick concession for the students placed them 5 metres out. Zig zag rugby back and forth seemed no use, as Nic Jakobsen resorted to a quick pick from the base of the ruck, beating two to score in the corner. Final score Huddersfield 29 – 33 Loughborough Students. By Will Trinder

LOUGHBOROUGH STUDENTS RFC V ROTHERHAM TITANS
TODAYS OPPOSITION
ROTHERHAM TITANS Rotherham Titans are one of the top sides in England and have been gracing the game of rugby union since 1923. Rotherham play their home games at Clifton Lane sports ground (capacity 2,500) which they share with Rotherham Town Cricket Club. They moved to Clifton Lane in the late 1930s and have played every league season at Clifton Lane apart from the 2003–04 Premiership season during Rotherham's second stint as they instead shared Millmoor stadium with Rotherham United Football Club to satisfy promotion criteria. Rotherham returned to Clifton Lane the following year. The 2000/01 season saw Rotherham winning promotion to become Yorkshire's first ever representative in the top tier of English rugby. The 2003–04 season saw a return to the Premiership for Rotherham and a change of name as a sponsorship deal with Titan Environmental lead to the adoption of the 'Titans' nickname. The Titans had been sharing Millmoor stadium with Rotherham United Football Club since the start of the 2002–03 season, but Millmoor proved even less of a happy top-flight hunting ground than Clifton Lane as Rotherham struggled to adapt on their return, the Titans being relegated from the top-flight of professional
rugby union in 2003–04 after only one season, disappointingly without winning a single match. After scrapping to stay in the third tier of English rugby, the South Yorkshire outfit had their fate confirmed as the Covid-19 pandemic ended their quest for safety. Rotherham have continued to inspire away from the pitch, and versatile back Jamie Cooke has led the way for the Titans Community Foundation. While Rotherham may not have played a fixture for 17 months, the efforts of Jamie Cooke and the Titans Community Foundation has been inspiring. Cooke and the Community Foundation team are delivering initiatives to improve health and fitness of children in the local area after he was left shocked by the lack of physical activity children were getting when he was visiting schools. With 8 wins from 9 games, and already 5th in the table with 2 games in hand, Rotherham will be a tough test for the Students this weekend.

A BRIEF HISTORY 1984 Rex Hazeldine is appointed as Head Coach leading the side to a UAU title and victory in the Leicestershire Cup. A touring Australian Universities side was also defeated.
1976
1919
1962-68
Loughborough College formed the original Rugby Union side in September 1919.
These were spectacular years for Loughborough, winning every UAU title except 1965. Gerald Davies, John Mantle, Dave Rollit, John Taylor, Bev Risman and Colin MacFadyean, became world class players. John Robins became the first British and Irish Lions coach.
1930 Loughborough Colleges competed in their first Universities Athletic Union competition, beating Nottingham University 8-0 in their first match.
1939 Loughborough Colleges reached the UAU final for the first time, losing narrowly to Swansea.
1953 Loughborough Colleges won the UAU for the first time.
Middlesex 7s winners: 1959, 1964 1966, 1970 and 1976.
1996 Loughborough enter the leagues at the bottom of the RFU pyramid.
The Student’s Unions of the University of Technology and the Loughborough Colleges merged and the Loughborough Students Rugby Club was formed. The team won the UAU in 1977, 1978 and 1979, with the 1978–79 side captained by the young centre Clive Woodward.
17
1970 The legendary Jim Greenwood coaches the Colleges to victory in the Middlesex Sevens, and the first UAU final at Twickenham. This side was probably the strongest ever, with six future internationals, Louis Dick, David Cooke, Clive Rees, Fran Cotton, Steve Smith, and Dick Cowman.
1997 Loughborough wins over Cambridge and Oxford in consecutive weeks signals the changing balance of power in student rugby.
1998 Ian Smith is appointed as the first full-time Director of Rugby.
2003 The World Cup winning England team was coached by six Loughborough alumni: Clive Woodward, Dave Alred, Andy Robinson, Dave Reddin, Phil Larder and Simon Hardy.
2005 Winning BUCS in 2005 breaks our longest spell without a BUCS victory.
2006 Real Varsity Match v Bath. Floodlights Appeal provides campus venue for the first ever rugby ‘event’ and engages alumni leading to the Vice Presidents club. A 3000+ crowd watched Loughborough beat Bath.
2008 Director of Rugby Dave Morris leads the side to promotion into National League 2 North, making the team the first student side to take part in the National Leagues.
2009 The Dan James Memorial Match Loughborough 23 – 20 England U20 A magnificent achievement for Dave Morris’ team and a suitably characterful performance through which to remember Dan.
2012 Loughborough v The Barbarians. A huge match to mark the opening of the Loughborough Stadium. Andy Robinson’s Barbarian side win 40– 7. Loughborough promoted into National League 1.
2016 Fiji win the first Olympic 7s competition coached by Loughborough alumni Ben Ryan, defeating Team GB in the process and fellow Loughborough alumni Phil Burgess.
2017 Loughborough Lightning enter the Tyrrells Premier 15s league.
