PREFACE A very warm welcome to Loughborough University and the third RILEM International Conference on Concrete and Digital Fabrication: Digital Concrete 2022. This conference builds on the inaugural conference held at ETHZ, Zurich, Switzerland, in 2018 and the second held at TU Eindhoven, The Netherlands, in 2020. The conference series developed out of the international collaborative platform provided by the RILEM Technical Committee TC 276-DFC to support the developing global interest in digital fabrication with cement-based materials. Alongside the Digital Concrete conference series proceedings, is an initiative to bring together leading proponents in the area to collaboratively contribute to journal articles on key topics for a special issue of Cement and Concrete Research. These articles help shape the Digital Concrete conference themes, many of these forming the basis of keynote presentations and invited lectures. This conference sees the publication of the third volume in the series. The field is developing rapidly both in terms of research and in commercial application. Recognising the future requirements for standardised testing and quality control for 3D printed materials, RILEM has initiated two further Technical Committees TC-PFC: Performance requirements and testing of fresh printable cement-based materials, chaired by Nicolas Roussel and Dirk Lowke and TC- ADC: Assessment of Additively Manufactured Concrete Materials and Structures, chaired by Viktor Mechtcherine and Freek Bos. Both themes central to the conference and this year, Digital Concrete 2022 takes stock of just how far we have come, providing insights and a platform to debate the next steps needed to enable greater adoption of these technologies.

WELCOME The COVID-19 pandemic has affected us all, taking away the opportunity to meet in person. This event marks the first time in four years that the community has engaged en-masse. Recognising that we must rebuild our personal interactions the organising and scientific committees have purposely designed the technical program with space and time to meet. We have also used this moment to promote Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and embed supporting principles throughout the review, selection, keynote speaker invitation and decision-making processes. We love being stimulated by new ideas and enjoy the opportunity to debate with colleagues and we hope we have been able to deliver this aspiration. The technical program is of exceptional quality. The growth of interest and investment in the technology worldwide has been staggering, the community continues to grow and the level of research reaches new highs. The response to the call for contributions for the conference came from 101 organisations in 27 countries. We received over 240 abstracts, which turned into over 164 paper submissions, and around 40 extended abstracts. Nearly 140 oral and poster presentations comprise the parallel sessions. 68 full papers will be published in the proceedings.
For ease of reference, the proceedings are divided into sections that reflect the same session groups found in the conference program. The themes on Day one, consider the state of the technology and the importance of quality control. Day two reflects on lessons learnt from the field and broadens the consideration of processes alternative to extrusion based 3D concrete printing. Day three then tackles the future and considers alternative approaches to the deployment of the positioning systems that drive digital fabrication and the big question of sustainability. Participant interaction is central to the conference and all these topics will be debated with the whole community in the plenary ‘Paper Dart Sessions’ facilitated by experts. In addition, the poster sessions include 60 of the finest, new and most exciting work prepared for discussion that will be led by poster convenors with delegates voting for best posters. Please be ready, engage with a smile and get the most out of the event! The school’s vision is to be the world’s leading integrated centre for built environment research and education, attending to the entire lifecycle of both buildings and infrastructure through our research and teaching.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
Eric Kreiger Eric Kreiger is a Research Civil Engineer at the US Army Corps of Engineers, Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) in Champaign, IL. Mr. Kreiger is the Structural Engineering and Materials lead for ERDC’s Additive Construction (Construction Scale 3D printing) program located at CERL.
Freek Bos Freek Bos is an Assistant Professor of Concrete Structures at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). He has been part of the 3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) research group since 2015. His current focus is on innovative reinforcement concepts for 3DCP, including printable SHCC and robotically introduced reinforcement elements. He has also been involved in 3DCP construction projects, including the Cohesion pavilion in Innsbruck. Freek is deputy chair of the RILEM TC ADC (Assessment of Additively Manufactured Concrete Materials and Structures).
Guowei Ma Professor Ma is the Vice President of Hebei University of Technology, China, and an internationally recognised figure in 3D concrete printing and intelligent construction, founding four research centers/labs related to these topics. He has published five books and over 300 high quality articles in international journals and conferences and served as Associate Editor-in-Chief or Editorial Board Member of eight international journals. He holds the Guinness World Record for the longest 3D-printed bridge.

Kathrin Dörfler Kathrin Dörfler is an architect and researcher in the field of computational design and robotic fabrication. She co-foundied the architectural research studio dorfundrust. Her work bridges the gaps between architecture and robotics for fabrication not only in laboratory environments but directly on construction sites. Kathrin is a Tenure Track Professor at the TUM School of Engineering and Design (TUM SoED) at the Technical University of Munich, founding a research group for Digital Fabrication at the Department of Architecture.
Viktor Mechtcherine Viktor Mechtcherine is Director of the Institute for Construction Materials and Full Professor at the Technische Universität Dresden, Germany. He is Coordinator of the German Research Foundation (DFG) Priority Program SPP 2005 ‘Opus Fluidum Futurum – Rheology of reactive, multiscale, multi-phase construction materials’ and chair of RILEM Technical Committee ‘Assessment of Additively Manufactured Concrete Materials and Structures’. He is RILEM Fellow and awardee of Wason Medal for Materials Research by American Concrete Institute (ACI) and Innovation Award of the bauma 2016 Munich.

PRODUCTIVITY
A consistent quality of print is obtained by monitoring and controlling the process with more than 50 sensors. A constant flow and product quality are then achieved, giving a high consistency of layer thickness.
Resource use and carbon content are minimised by utilising a printing mortar with a low carbon content and high physical performance which allows a reduction in the total amount of material required to print an object.
With a print speed of up to 1 m/s and a maximum flow rate of 2 t/h, the printing process developed by Sika is able to achieve the highest levels of productivity. A column of 3 m high can be printed in less than 20 minutes.

N3XTCON N3XTCON is a Danish research and development project that aims to develop tools and methods to enable more robust, sustainable and productive 3D-printed concrete structures. The project focuses on: 1) Introducing design strategies that enables new aesthetic designs and optimised structures with low material consumption. 2) Developing new concrete mixes with large aggregates for 3DCP with a minimized CO2footprint. 3) Developing a new digital tool to simulate the behaviour of 3DCP material; thus enabling the printing process optimisation. 4) Introducing reinforcement solutions that enable the printing of load-bearing concrete structures.
The project results are to be demonstrated via a fullscale demonstration in the beginning of 2023.
