THRIVING ENTERPRISE ECOSYSTEM The University is home to Loughborough University Science and Enterprise Park (LUSEP), the UK’s largest university science park which makes up 60% of the land in Leicestershire’s newest Enterprise Zone. LUSEP is home to 90 organisations ranging from local and graduate startups, academic spinouts and large organisations. An innovative partnership with Leicestershire County Council is enabling leading software company, The Access Group, to expand at LUSEP and create 500 jobs.

20

AT A G L A N C E

New developments at LUSEP include the relocation of the Studio graduate hub and an incubator for spinouts and local startups, connecting 15 early-stage companies to the community. Flood nowcasting specialists Previsico (above) are one of two new University spinouts scaling up at LUSEP.

Graduates Alex Nash (left) and Chris Ruddock (right) have launched thriving businesses at LUSEP, attracting skilled alumni back to Loughborough and providing great placements for undergraduates. In two years they have collectively raised £2M+ investment and created 25 technical jobs, rising to 32 by the end of 2019.

With regional partners we have launched a pioneering vision for economic prosperity. Loughborough Area of Innovation is the first Industrial Strategy response that places innovation and entrepreneurship at its heart. Building a community of industry leaders and influencers, we aim to develop and deliver bold projects to bring benefit the Loughborough region and beyond.

In partnership with the England and Wales Cricket Board, British Standards Institute and leading manufacturers, we are raising safety standards to prevent serious and fatal head injuries in cricket and other sports. There are also applications beyond sport within the emergency services and for military personnel.

We are using solar nano-grids to build energy-owning capacity in the Global South. As well as meeting community members’ household power needs, the system provides capacity for some small-scale agricultural and commercial applications, including a money transfer hub and small store, and a large-scale egg incubator.

Switch failures cost Network Rail £120 million a year as a result of 63,300 hours of delays. In partnership with the Railway Safety Strategy Board, we have developed a radical new switch to keep trains running, which could prevent 90% of delays caused by points failure. The technology is ready to be scaled for global benefit.
