A Technical Institute is established in Loughborough

1915

Herbert Schofield becomes the first Principal of the Technical College

1916

The Institute begins training munitions workers for the war effort

1920

Newly named Loughborough College granted its own Armorial Bearings

1937

School of Athletics, Games and Physical Training created

1958

Burleigh Estate is bought by the College

1965

One of the campus’ most iconic buildings – The Towers – is opened as a hall of residence

1994

The University wins the first of seven Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education

1989

Her Majesty the Queen visits the University – the first royal visit in its history

1979

Students’ Union building opened by Monty Python’s Michael Palin and Terry Jones

1966

Loughborough College of Advanced Technology becomes Loughborough University of Technology, after being awarded a Royal Charter in recognition of its excellence and achievements to date

1996

The University is renamed Loughborough University

2009

The University celebrates its centenary year The Princess Royal launches the new School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences and officially opens its state-ofthe-art Clyde Williams building

2015

Loughborough University Science and Enterprise Park expands when the Advanced Technology Innovation Centre (ATIC) opens The National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine opens Loughborough University London opens

2011

Work is completed on the £21 million Loughborough Design School, enhancing the University’s position as a world leader in the field of design The Studio launches, supporting graduates to develop their ideas into commercially viable products, services or social enterprises

2013

The University wins its seventh Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education in recognition of its ground-breaking work in the area of high value manufacturing

2012

Loughborough welcomes Team GB to campus as they prepare for the London Olympic Games

2016

Over 80 students, graduates and Loughborough-based athletes participate in the Rio Olympic and Paralympic games, bringing home 12 Olympic and 22 Paralympic medals

2017

Olympic legend Lord Sebastian Coe is named as the University’s new Chancellor

2018

The University secures the top spot in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey 2018 – its eighth win since the survey’s inception in 2006 Loughborough is named University of the Year in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019

2020

Loughborough is named University of the Year at the 2020 Whatuni Student Choice Awards

2021

Loughborough is named best university in the world for sports-related subjects in the QS World University Subject Rankings for the fifth year running
