Development update Sculpture commission for Queen’s Park Family fun at Science and Engineering Fair www.lboro.ac.uk
Development update Science and Enterprise Park In January the University announced that ambitious proposals for an expanded Science and Enterprise Park were being developed with local partners. The project has the backing of Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council, as well as the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership, who all recognise the importance of the expansion of the Science and Enterprise Park for strategic economic development. The expanded Park will provide opportunities for growning local businesses and will also attract national and international inward investment. Whilst the whole project will be developed over the next 15 to 25 years, discussions are at an advanced stage for the next two buildings. Outline planning permission has already been agreed for a 7.8 hectare site where the first projects will be located. In the longer term further expansion on 22 hectares of land also owned by the University is anticipated. When fully developed the Park will provide up to 200,000m2 of floor space and house businesses employing as many as 6,000 people, of which about 4,000 could be new jobs.
Sports Pitches Following a break over the winter, work to create two new sports pitches at the west end of campus has restarted. Once constructed, the pitches will be used during term-time by the University’s elite sport teams for competitive matches and training purposes. They may also be used by visitors who attend conferences at the University during the summer. Dedicated parking spaces will be provided within the Holywell Park car park and teams will use the new purpose-built changing facilities at the stadium. Pedestrian access to the site will be through Holywell Park car park, via an existing gate to the north of the site.
University Library A major project is underway to refurbish the Library on campus. The project will see an increase in the number of study spaces and significant enhancements to the general environment. In December there was some on site external work and over the Christmas vacation work started to strip out the existing fixtures and fittings on level 4. This work will continue over the March/Easter vacation 2013. The majority of the work to transform the library will take place over the summer vacation in 2013.

Falkner Eggington hall of residence As University News went to press work on site had stopped as the contractor working on the refurbishment (Ocon Construction) had filed for administration and ceased trading. The University’s Facilities Management team is currently exploring the options available to complete the refurbishment project. In the meantime the site has been made safe and secure by the University and a 24/7 security presence remains on site.
East Park demolition projects Demolition of the Dance Studio in the East Park part of campus is underway and will be complete by mid-May. Plans are being progressed to regenerate this whole area of campus with a major landscaping scheme and further information on this will be available in due course.
Landscaping projects The University has submitted a planning application to Charnwood Borough Council for a programme of landscaping projects around campus. The projects aim to enhance the visual appearance of the campus, improve the flow of traffic in certain key areas and allow for an increase in facilities for cyclists. Delivery of the programme is subject to the University’s normal approvals process.
Ashby Road Houses In June 2012 the University announced it was to sell properties on Ashby Road – numbers 192,194,196 and 198. One of those properties – 194 has now been sold.
Health and Biosciences building and National Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine Work to construct the new building is now well underway.

Printing technology breathes new life into
Richard III
The University’s world-leading expertise in 3D printing has been used by the University of Leicester to breathe new life into the remains of King Richard III – creating a replica of his skull.
Leicester University announced in February that the skeleton found last year in the city by its team of archaeologists was that of Richard III. Experts from Loughborough’s School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering were invited to make a replica of the king’s skeleton, using the latest 3D printing techniques. Scans of the actual remains were sent to Loughborough, where they were transformed into a 3D computer model. Laser sintering was then used to create a physical replica of the skeleton. Laser sintering is a technique that uses a high power laser to fuse small particles of materials, in this case plastic, into a mass that has a three-dimensional shape. The replica of the skull is currently on display at The Guildhall, Leicester as part of a major exhibition telling the story of King Richard III, his life and times and the search for his lost remains.
Donations Fund boost
Community Groups across Charnwood are set to benefit from a boost to the University’s Community Donations Fund. An additional £25,000 has been made available by the University for the fund this year and for the next three years. The money has been made available through savings in salaries following a number of strike days in the Higher Education sector last year. The allocation for use by the Community Donations Fund comes with the agreement and support of the campus Trade Unions. An extra £5,000 has already been added to the Open Fund which was awarded at the end of March and an announcement regarding allocation of the remaining funds will be made in due course.
Queen’s Park sculpture commission for Fine Arts student
Ian Tricker, a Fine Art finalist student at the University has won a £2,000 commission by Charnwood Borough Council to design the latest series of sculptures for Queen’s Park in Loughborough. The sculptures will celebrate the instalment of the St Paul’s Cathedral ‘Great Paul’ bell case in the park. Loughboroughbased Bell Foundry, Taylor and Co created the bell case in 1881. Ian’s unique sculptures will include a trio of six feet high tuning forks, four bells juxtaposed in a stacked formation and a silhouette of a bell interior and the ‘clapper’ that makes the sound of the bell. The bell case and new sculptures will form an important element of Loughborough’s Britain in Bloom entry for 2013. They will be installed in early May. Last year three students from the School of the Arts were involved in a similar project with Charnwood Borough Council, where they designed a striking installation of two-metre high swimmers legs to represent synchronised swimming and capture the essence of the Olympics.
Primary school students get a taste of
chemistry at work
Year 5 and 6 students from Mountfields Lodge School got a taste of chemistry in the world of work recently when staff and students from the University’s Chemistry Department visited for the morning.
The event was sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry and was designed to show students the importance of chemistry in everyday life and the various directions chemistry can take you. The morning’s activities consisted of talks, hands on activities, demonstrations and even taste testing. Joining in the event were University colleagues from the Psychology department and three companies who utilise chemistry in their business – Noble Denton, Intelligent Energy and Charnwood Waste. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service were also on hand with a fire engine and chemical suits.
Family fun on offer at Science and
Engineering Fair Families had a free, fun packed afternoon of activities on campus in March as part of the University’s celebrations of National Science and Engineering Week.
The week aims to celebrate science and engineering and their importance to our lives, giving people the chance to participate in science and engineering activities and experiments, and to engage in related discussions in their local area. Invention and Discovery was the theme for the family event as the University sought to celebrate the role of scientists, engineers and investors in creating new technologies and solving problems. A number of interactive challenges were on offer, from using a giant Spirograph to walking on custard! Around 1,000 people attended the event, which took place between 1pm and 4pm.
Prime Minister’s Big Society Award for
Action Group
Loughborough Students’ Union Action Group has won a Big Society Award from Prime Minister, David Cameron. The Big Society Awards were set up by the Prime Minister in November 2010. The aim is to acknowledge individuals and organisations across the UK that demonstrate the Big Society in their work or activities. The Action Group has been honoured for harnessing the volunteering power of students to help community groups across Loughborough. The Action Group has been operating since 1997 and offers students volunteering opportunities ranging from one-off mass events like litter picking or making over a community centre, to regular sessions like a weekly soup kitchen or delivering reading support in schools.
Action were nominated for the Big Society Award by local MP, Nicky Morgan, who has seen Action’s work first-hand after attending a number of events and volunteering herself at their first soup kitchen project in October 2011. Each year the University acknowledges the contribution student volunteers make to the local community by presenting the TS Shipman and Hannah awards. The presentations this year will take place in May at a celebration event to be held at Loughborough Town Hall.
Can 20 Minutes Of Exercise Per Week Improve Your Health? Researchers in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at the University are looking to recruit volunteers to participate in research examining whether short bursts of high intensity cycling can improve blood sugar regulation, body composition, blood pressure and many other health outcomes. Emerging research suggests that very small amounts of high intensity exercise – three times per week – can provide striking improvements in health outcomes after just two to six weeks of training. The novel aspect of this form of exercise is the time efficiency with benefits being gained with just 10 minutes of exercise per session.
The researchers are looking for men and women (18-50 years) who are overweight (body mass index 27-40) but otherwise healthy. Participants in the study are required to attend the laboratory at the University three times per week (for six weeks) to complete seven minutes of high intensity cycling. A handful of health assessments will also be undertaken before and after the intervention. The investigation is part of a larger European-wide study funded by the European Union which is seeking to develop genetic and metabolic predictors of change in health outcomes in response to exercise training http://metapredict.eu/ Participants who take part in the study will be reimbursed on completion with £300 to cover their travel expenses and inconvenience. Anyone interested in participating in the research, or would like further information should contact the study co-ordinator, Mrs Claire Mottram (c.mottram@lboro.ac.uk or 226445)
