WELCOME TO ALL LOUGHBOROUGH IN LONDON STUDENTS LU Arts is the University’s arts programme that provides opportunities to experience cultural activity as audience or participant. We have produced this booklet in order to make London students more aware of how LU Arts can enable you to achieve your creative ambitions and to signpost you to the rich cultural offer that is on your doorstep. LU Arts aims to make the arts more accessible to you and support the development of your creative skills. We can provide a range of practical and financial support and plan to stage more events in London in the coming months. COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA The Hackney Community Orchestra, coordinated by Eric Holmes, gives the local community a place to learn and develop their confidence in playing in a relaxed and informal ensemble. The orchestra is open to anyone, whatever level of music you find yourself at. If you’d like to join this amazing orchestra they meet every Thursday, 6.30-8pm at The Bridge Academy, Laburnum Street E2 8BA. Contact Eric Holmes – jayaneric@msn.com


HOW CAN LU ARTS SUPPORT YOUR CREATIVITY? Scholarships At the beginning of each academic year, we offer scholarships to those who have a passion for music and the arts. There are nine scholarships available across a range of art forms that can be applied to by students at both Loughborough University and Loughborough University London. Each scholarship comes with a cash prize and mentoring/tuition to help you during the year, in return those who are successful will help contribute to the creative life on campus, whether it be through running workshops or putting on concerts!

Art Grants Do you have an idea for an arts-related activity but need funding to make it happen? LU Arts can help turn your creative ideas into a reality! Funds of up to ÂŁ1,000 are available for taught and research students studying at both Loughborough University and Loughborough University London. Not only will we help fund your ideas, but we will also offer support in delivering and marketing your events. To find out more about how you can apply, visit our website arts.lboro.ac.uk


Creative Skill Share If you would like to share your creative skills with your peers – whether it’s photography, printmaking, music, dance or anything else creative – LU Arts wants to hear from you! LU Arts is looking for talented students to help deliver workshops to aspiring students or to perform at events. As an added bonus, you get paid for it too! CREATIVE ACTIVITY NEAR LOUGHBOROUGH IN LONDON Stratford East Picturehouse Housed in a landmark building and located in the heart of Stratford’s cultural quarter, Stratford Picturehouse shows mainstream to foreign films on their four screens. Why not become a member and receive exclusive discounts on cinema visits and discounts with local partners such as Nando’s, Pizza Express and many more! Stratford Circus Arts Centre This centre brings accessible, world-class performances and creative learning to your doorstep. Based in Newham and East London, the Stratford Circus Arts Centre hold exhibitions, workshops, shows, music sessions and more! Bow Arts Trust and Nunnery Gallery At the heart of the community, Bow Arts Trust helps support community renewal by delivering arts and creative services through social enterprise. The Nunnery Gallery is a free public gallery with a local focus, championing the work of emerging and established artists and uncovering east London’s history and heritage. Castle Cinema Located in Hackney, the successful pop-up cinema events – Hot Tub Cinema and Pillow Cinema were the kick-starters for this company’s most recent venture. This venue now hosts films, live performances and events. In addition to the cinema, there is also a bar and restaurant area perfect for getting a bite to eat.


Chisenhale Gallery This contemporary galley has one of London’s most innovative forums for contemporary art. Located in the heart of the East End, the gallery commissions and produces and exhibits art, supporting international and UK-based artists to pursue new directions. Diverse events and public talks as well as training and professional development are all available at the Chisenhale Gallery. Hackney Empire Hackney Empire creates universal experiences on and beyond its stage, presenting extraordinary, relevant and inspirational works. Their eclectic programme of shows and events drive creativity into local society. Their extensive programme means there is always something on to suit everyone’s tastes in theatre, music and dance. Hackney Picturehouse This picturehouse is located in the heart of Hackney, offering a variety of films from current releases to independent films and live arts screenings. An added bonus is their lovely café and bar area if you’re wanting a light refreshment. The Yard Theatre This theatre and music venue is based in a converted warehouse built out of salvaged material in Hackney Wick. The company is dedicated to telling contemporary stories in contemporary ways – upending traditions to fill the gap between performance and writing. The venue hosts a mixture of theatre, music and local events. Vortex Foundation As one of the UK’s premier jazz venues, the Vortex Jazz Club programmes almost 400 performances a year… that’s a lot of jazz! The club also serves as a platform for improvised and experimental music especially in the launch of upcoming artists and emerging new talents. Why not visit or even gig at the Vortex yourself!
