Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering
Why choose Aeronautical or Automotive Engineering at Loughborough? We are regarded as one of the UK’s leading Departments for Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering. We bring together outstanding facilities, superb teaching and strong links with industry to make sure you are completely ready for your future career. You will gain the best of both worlds when studying fundamental engineering subjects combined with inspiring aeronautical or automotive engineering specialist areas. You can expect high quality teaching informed by the latest thinking in aerospace and automotive industries, equipping graduates with excellent skills so that they are highly sought after by employers. Professional recognition Our Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering courses are accredited by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and the Royal Aeronautical Society. Placement year You can spend one year on an approved industrial placement between the second and third, or third and fourth years. Having strong ties with industry, the Department provides considerable assistance with obtaining suitable placements, although ultimate responsibility for arranging a placement lies with you. Employability The Department has particularly close links with BAE Systems, Bentley, British Airways, Ford Motor Company, Group Lotus, Jaguar Land Rover, JCB, HORIBA MIRA, Perkins Caterpillar, Rolls-Royce and many tier one aeronautical and automotive suppliers. Facilities We have extensive laboratories and facilities including: wind tunnels, anechoic chamber, indoor UAV testing, composite material manufacture, structures testing laboratory, gas-turbine engines, eight purpose-built automotive engine test cells, Hawk aircraft, 6-axis of motion road and aircraft simulator, chassis dynamometer, high and low temperature fuel cell testing facilities and numerous instrumented test vehicles. Testing and analysis week Aeronautical students gain experience of testing and flight procedures during second and third year by undertaking a flight test course, that includes up to four flights, usually in a modified Saab 340b aircraft, equipped as a flying laboratory and classroom. Automotive students take part in vehicle testing at HORIBA MIRA proving ground, including data logging and analysis, vehicle handling, off-road dynamics, noise certification, braking performance and wet weather driving.
