VICE-CHANCELLOR’S WELCOME

03

POSTGRADUATE PROSPECTUS 2018

Welcome At Loughborough University, we understand the importance of working together, sharing ideas and growing our community.

Our postgraduate community is built on a foundation of academic excellence and an environment where students form enduring professional and personal friendships that are integral to their intellectual development and future careers. Our postgraduates are essential to our research endeavour and their contribution is a key part of both their success and ours.

At Loughborough our postgraduate students and staff come together, work together and think together. They are excellent scholars in their own right but often achieve great success through co-operation and collaboration. By choosing Loughborough you will make your own individual contribution to excellence and be able to share in our attainment.

Loughborough postgraduates, like our staff, come from across the world. Many work with our partners in business, industry and the professions, as part of widening their knowledge and experience, developing new ideas and studying beyond the current boundaries of thinking. They also benefit from the wide range of opportunities that make up the broader student experience and become an integral part of what we call the Loughborough family.

I hope that my colleagues, current postgraduate students and I will be welcoming you to either campus soon so that you too will benefit from the academic excellence that lies at the heart of Loughborough University. Kind regards

Professor Robert J. Allison Vice-Chancellor and President

Celebrating 25 years of partnership with Rolls-Royce The Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) at Loughborough University represents a pioneering partnership between academia and industry, and was established to develop new and enhanced technologies for gas turbine engines.

Director of Engineering and Technology at Rolls-Royce, Dr Stewart Miller was part of the founding team who supported the launch of the UTC in 1991. “Stewart Miller and his peers were really quite visionary,” says Mark Jefferies, Chief of University Research Liaison at Rolls-Royce. “They saw the benefits that a close working relationship could have for both Rolls-Royce and the University, and supported a set-up that has transformed the way we research, design, test and ultimately deliver cutting-edge new technology.” Since the launch, the UTC at Loughborough has experienced outstanding growth and now boasts a wealth of cutting edge laboratories and test facilities, with an annual research income in excess of £2.5 million. Led by Professor Jon Carrotte, the UTC’s team of researchers have over 90 years of combined experience. The team have supervised over 50 PhD candidates through to completion, published 200 journal publications, over 260 conference papers and received the award of numerous worldwide patents. Professor Carrotte adds: “As we celebrate 25 years of partnership and innovation, we’re looking forward to moving into a new era with the establishment of the new multi-million pound National Centre in Combustion and Aerothermal Technology at Loughborough, set to open in 2019.”

Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering

PhD student wins award for engineering innovation Alister Smith, a PhD student from the School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering, received the prestigious Fiona and Nicholas Hawley Award for Engineering Innovation, in recognition of his work on acoustic emission monitoring for landslide early warning.

Over the course of his PhD, Alister established a way to utilise acoustic emission monitoring to identify accelerations in slope movement, both continuously and in real-time. Using acoustic emission monitoring in this way could improve the chances of detecting landslides early and potentially save thousands of lives across the world. Field trials in the UK, Italy and Canada have been successful and discussions have already begun to commercialise Alister’s approach. His work has also made a significant contribution to the ‘assessment of landslides using acoustic real-time monitoring systems (ALARMS)’ project, led by Professor Neil Dixon, Professor of Geotechnical Engineering. The Fiona and Nicholas Hawley Award recognises ‘engineering innovation that benefits the environment’ and is awarded to graduates, academics, early-career stage engineers or scientists in the UK. “It was an incredible honour to receive the prestigious Hawley Award,” explains Alister. “I am delighted that this research has received such recognition; landslides destroy thousands of lives globally each year and this technology could make a real difference.”

POSTGRADUATE PROSPECTUS 2018

Department of Chemistry

Using saliva to transform the diagnosis of asthma A new test diagnosing asthma from a patient’s saliva has been developed by researchers from the Department of Chemistry.

Around 5.4 million people currently receive treatment for asthma in the UK, of which 1.1 million are children. The current method of diagnosis involves measuring a person’s airflow lung capacity, which can be inaccurate and can often misrepresent any underlying changes associated with asthma. Other methods such as blood or urine analysis are sometimes used, but often these approaches cause inconvenience and distress, particularly for babies and young children. The research team, led by Professor Colin Creaser from Loughborough’s Department of Chemistry and Dr Dominick Shaw from the Respiratory Research Unit at Nottingham City Hospital collected saliva from patients with asthma and healthy individuals without asthma. They then performed liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis on the samples to find ‘metabolic biomarkers’ which indicate the presence of the condition. By detecting and identifying the amount of ‘metabolic biomarkers’ in the sample, the new test also has the potential to pinpoint the severity and progression of the disease. “Previous research conducted at Loughborough confirmed that metabolic profiling of saliva can detect other health conditions, such as exercise-induced physiological stress,” explains Professor Creaser. “We were very excited to discover the same method can be used to diagnose asthma – a condition affecting millions of people in the UK.”

Printing the fashion of the future A new project using 3D textile printing could revolutionise how clothes and footwear are produced around the world.

The 18-month project, known as 3D Fashion, is developing 3D textile fashion items, designed in collaboration with a major fashion house. The project is being led by world-leading scholar and Senior Lecturer in Product and Industrial Design, Dr Guy Bingham, alongside global textile and garment manufacturer, the Yeh Group. The production methods adopted by Dr Bingham and his team not only have the potential to reduce waste, labour costs and carbon emissions, but could also influence global economy and trade by encouraging localised manufacturing and production. Currently garment production generates 1.8 million tonnes of waste material, with 6.3 billion m³ of water used in the process. Using 3D textile printing would enable manufacturers to meet the growing demands for faster and more ethical fashion, whilst cutting out unnecessary waste and resource. “3D printing is bringing to life what was previously considered to be impossible,” explains Dr Bingham. “This landmark technology allows us as designers to innovate faster and create personalised, ready-to-wear fashion in a digital world, with no geometrical constraints and almost zero waste material.”

Shaping the foundations for the National Living Wage Research by the Centre for Research in Social Policy has been used successfully as a tool for calculating the national Living Wage.

Professor Donald Hirsch is the Director of the Centre for Research in Social Policy (CRSP), based in the Department of Social Sciences at Loughborough University. Together with a team of researchers, Professor Hirsch led a major piece of work which aimed to address the Minimum Income Standard. Using real people and genuine experiences, Professor Hirsch’s team sought to identify minimum household needs, from food and housing to the types of opportunities and choices life offers them. With the support of the newly formed Living Wage Foundation, the Centre’s research and findings became the basis for Living Wage calculations and the rise of the Living Wage Employer. Living Wage Employers now include the Scottish Government, The Church of England, John Lewis and Ikea, as well as a number of large local authorities and universities. The research has already proven to have an impact globally, as other countries start to replicate the idea and make steps towards improving the lives of individuals and communities. “Some people ask me if I’m the founding father of the UK Living Wage,” explains Professor Hirsch. “I have to say that’s not quite true. It started before me. I can’t take credit for inventing it – but I have helped to shape it. I’ve helped to make it work, and I am proud of that.”

Inspiring a national healthcare revolution The National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine East Midlands (NCSEM-EM) is one of three constituent centres providing a brand new model in healthcare delivery, allowing academics to work in close collaboration with clinicians and the public.

The Centre brings together experts from around the region who specialise in conditions such as chronic disease, sports injuries and musculoskeletal health. These experts work together to treat and prevent injuries caused by exercise and to tackle conditions associated with a lack of exercise. They also contribute to the ‘exercise is medicine’ agenda – helping those with diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Alzheimer’s and Osteoarthritis to alleviate their symptoms through exercise and enjoy a better quality of life. The NCSEM-EM is a joint initiative between Loughborough University, the universities of Nottingham and Leicester, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The Director of the NCSEM-EM, Professor Mark Lewis is Dean of the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences and is a leading expert in musculoskeletal biology. He explains: “Universities today are increasingly asked to show the impact of their research, and the NCSEM-EM is a perfect example of that. We have patients being treated on campus on a daily basis, enabling us to see our research in action and the effect it has on people and their lives.”

POSTGRADUATE PROSPECTUS 2018

Glendonbrook Institute for Enterprise Development

Uncovering the gender gap for female entrepreneurs Women who run online businesses are less likely to be given funding or be taken seriously, according to research by Entrepreneurship Lecturer, Dr Angela Dy.

The 18-month study observed 26 female digital entrepreneurs from a range of backgrounds, and identified the influences associated with their failure and success. The results highlighted a variety of challenges including overcoming unwelcoming business networks, learning and navigating unfamiliar technical platforms, hiring help and delegating responsibility, and battling social hierarchy in order to be accepted and taken seriously. Dr Dy led the project, which found further intersectional outcomes amongst female digital entrepreneurs. In particular, socio-economic class background appeared to be a major factor in determining levels of business success and failure, and racial discrimination was not eliminated in the virtual environment. The findings contradict the popular belief that everyone has the same digital opportunities once they have access to the Internet. Dr Dy’s research encourages us to question our expectations of the Internet to support entrepreneurial potential, and reminds us that technology is very much a part of society, not a separate sphere. “Because of the associations of tech with masculinity, women are not always taken seriously when it comes to our digital ventures. And while we are seeing more media attention towards female digital entrepreneurs, those with solid educations and career histories, and who aren’t up against racist discrimination, are better placed to do well with their online businesses. If we genuinely wish to support all women in business, we need to work to dismantle the variety of social structures that keep many of them at a disadvantage.”

Other sources of funding

A large number of independent organisations, charities and trusts support postgraduate research in a variety of areas. UK Research Councils offer a number of studentships and grants for PhD study, which often include the cost of fees and a generous stipend.

International PhD funding

International students may be eligible for funding from grant-awarding bodies in their own country, such as the Ministry or Department of Education. The British Council also manage a small number of international grants that may be available to you.

UK government PhD Loans

From 2018, the UK government will introduce new doctoral loans of up to £25,000 for PhDs and equivalent postgraduate research programmes. The loan is suitable for full-time and part-time postgraduate research students undertaking programmes lasting up to eight years. The loan is available to English-resident UK nationals aged 59 or under and is not means tested.
