Loughborough University

Let’s work together The School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences is renowned for fundamental and applied research which supports knowledge advancement and informs the practice of a variety of organisations worldwide. Over the past five years our diverse research portfolio has attracted £16.9m of funding, and we have delivered a range of projects for a variety of organisations including British Cycling (Paralympic), the England and Wales Cricket Board, Healthspan Elite, HSBC, the International Cricket Council, Sports Coach UK, Sunset and Vine, and UK Sport. In the same period we have engaged in consultancy contracts with a range of organisations. This service helps our partners to accelerate time-critical research and development projects that support their business and sport performance goals. This brochure provides an overview of our capabilities and the many ways that we can work with your organisation. To find out more, please contact Dr Mark King. We look forward to hearing from you.

What we do Our wide-ranging enterprise activities are underpinned by world-leading research which is organised around three themes.

Sport performance

We explore the underlying scientific mechanisms, behaviours and interactions that impact on sport performance across the ability range. As well as studying the physiological effects of factors including nutrition, training and rest on performance, we also investigate factors such as biomechanics, coaching and psychology as well as the impact of the social, political and economic contexts within which sport takes place.

Participation in sport and exercise

We are developing a comprehensive understanding of the factors that influence people’s engagement with exercise as part of their daily lives spanning casual and informal activity as well as formal, organised and elite sport. This includes the implementation of exercise medicine to promote physical and mental well-being.

Lifestyle for health and well-being

There are two strands to our work in this area. As well as the effectiveness of physical activity and exercise in the prevention, treatment and management of long-term medical conditions spanning physical and mental health disorders, we also study rehabilitation and recovery from musculoskeletal trauma.

World-leading cricket analysis Loughborough is one of just four accredited ICC testing centres for suspected illegal bowling action analysis worldwide. Our ground-breaking research also underpins the growing understanding of the biomechanics of fast and spin bowling as well as batting. The findings pinpoint ways to enhance cricket performance and reduce injury.

Enhancing youth development in football Work conducted by our sports psychologists underpins the FA’s player-centred performance evaluations as well as its coaching development programmes. The core psychological factors – known as the 5 Cs – have been promoted to over 20,000 FA licensed coaches worldwide and embedded within several English professional club academy programmes.
