Asparagus is one of the best veggie sources of folate, a B vitamin that could help keep you out of a mental slump. “Folate is important for the synthesis of the neurotransmitters dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine,” says Dr. David Mischoulon, associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. All of these are crucial for mood.

Q:
Are our pensions secure? Nurses lost part of their pensions – is that going to happen to non-nurses? Why have pensions been cut by 30%?
A:
Yes, our pensions are secure. The Dignity Health Pension Plan has a trust which holds the money that pays pension benefits. That trust can be used only to operate the plan and to pay plan benefits to eligible participants; the assets are available for no other purpose. As of September 2013, the Pension Plan trust is funded at 85%, which is above the accepted standard of 80% for a plan to be considered healthy. Dignity Health’s Pension Plan is far more robust than many other health systems across the country, as many no longer offer defined benefit pension plans at all. In terms of the recent changes that affected our nurses, no one lost anything that they already earned. There were no reductions to what had been earned – no reductions of 30% or any percent. Due to the concerns expressed by CNA when we updated the underlying interest rates and life expectancies used to calculate annuity benefits for the nurses to industry standards, a new pension formula was negotiated with CNA for retirement benefits earned starting January 1, 2014. The new pension benefits will be added to those that nurses already earned. We also have a transition process set up for those who are closest to retirement age and qualify. These changes were implemented already several years ago for nonrepresented employees.
