MARCH 27, 2015

“There is no greater loan than a sympathetic ear.” - Frank Tyger

National Catholic Sister’s Week NCSW is an annual celebration that took place March 8–14. Created to honor women religious, it is a series of events that instruct, enlighten, and bring greater focus to the lives of these incredible women. It’s our chance to recognize all they have done for us. It’s also our hope that as more young women learn about women religious, more will choose to follow their example.

Who are Women Religious?

They serve God through a diversity of ministries. Some live cloistered lives in contemplative prayer, while others work on the frontlines of global change, striving to improve various aspects of society, from environmental change to health care reform to human rights issues. All find ways to make the world a better place. They may have had a positive impact in your life through their work in your community, even if you didn’t know they were women religious. At Mercy Medical Center it is Sister Lucille Carreau, a Daughter of the Holy Spirit (DHS) who dedicated her life to God as vowed religious in 1963.

night mass, visit the mothers and babies, and assist our Spanish speaking patients. Before Mercy she was in education, working at schools in Connecticut and Vemont, as well as being the principal of St. Gertrude’s Elementary in Stockton. “I never wanted to work in a hospital, being in education was my calling,” said Sister Lucille. “Then one day while I was volunteering to help Sister Imelda with her computer, she had to leave the office. When she left, the phone rang and I answered. There was a dying patient and her son who needed some spiritual assistance, so I went to them.” “My second calling of being with the sick and grieving came when I realized that this is a unique way to serve the suffering Christ. ‘Whatever you do to the least of these, you do to Me’.”

She began her journey into health care more than 23 years ago as a volunteer to assist Sister Imelda Michaud, DHS in the Spiritual Services department.

While many of us read her weekly spiritual notes that come out in our email, Sister wants to remind us that we should start every day by answering this simple question. “What is my purpose today?” We need to take a moment every day to stop and reflect on our purpose for that day. And as we approach our work and each other, “we all need to listen with our ears and our hearts.”

Her first responsibility was to coordinate the singing for the Saturday

Thank you Sister Lucille for your presence here at Mercy.

By Rachel Abril, RN, BSN Clinical Manager of the 4th Floor

A nurse on my floor, Phebe Valdez, found out that one of her patients had no undergarments or personal supplies and all her family members were out of town. The patient was very uncomfortable with the fact that she didn't have any of her personal belongings or undergarments; and even though we supplied her with what we have in stock, she still wasn't comfortable. After working her 12 hour night shift, Phebe went and purchased the patient a package of undergarments and a few personal necessities, then hand delivered them to the patient in the morning. She displayed humankindness and didn't realize the staff working would notice this act. However, the charge nurse reached out to me to let me know what Phebe did for our patient.
