Inside information for the employees of Mercy Medical Center

ICU is making strides in patient care with the ABCDE Bundle What is the ABCDE Bundle?

The ABCDE Bundle is an evidence-based, organizational approach to the management of acutely ill patients and includes the following components:

The ABCDE Bundle consists of multiple, interdependent components that are designed to: • • •

Improve collaboration among clinical team members Standardize care processes Break the cycle of oversedation and prolonged attachment to a ventilator that can lead to delirium and weakness.

A multidisciplinary team (PT, RCP, ICU RNs) ambulated* a patient in our very own ICU on the 1st of October (shown in the picture above). Congratulations to the team for ensuring best practice for our ICU patients! *ambulate: to walk about or move from place to place (Dictionary.com)

Spinach is a great source of iron, which is a key component in red blood cells that fuel our muscles with oxygen for energy. But researchers in Sweden recently identified another way in which these greens might keep you charged: compounds found in spinach actually increase the efficiency of our mitochondria, the energy-producing factories inside our cells. That means eating a cup of cooked spinach a day may give you more lasting power on the elliptical machine (or in your daily sprint to catch the bus).

Frequently Asked Questions From the 2014 Open Forums Q:

What programs do we have in place to ensure that the spirit of Hello humankindness is not only for our patients, but also for the frontline staff and employees?

A:

Building a powerful brand requires that everyone in the organization do their part to deliver the experience where brand and mission meet every day. And we are all the most important part of that equation. Employees and leaders alike are brand ambassadors. As leaders, we are moving on several fronts to ensure that we are listening to your concerns, and acting on those areas where the need is greatest. We have a number of efforts underway to address employee concerns. One area that has been identified as a problem or barrier to great care is the physical space for our employees. Significant upgrades to our buildings and grounds are currently being undertaken across the system. One key area of these improvements will be to employee and physician lounges. Having a comfortable, clean space to relax for our employees is one important step we are undertaking to ensure humankindness is for our staff as well as our patients. Another major step is our nursing leadership’s current study of staffing and related issues,

described in a previous Q&A from the Open Forum. We have also already begun a major effort to improve communications with our employees –both sharing information and listening. The recent Open Forums with Lloyd Dean and senior leadership are being followed up with Town Halls in every facility, so that all employees can hear the information, ask questions, and share concerns. Over the last year, we have worked on enhancing communications in our facilities with more frequent newsletters and an increased use of face-to-face huddles and employee-leadership meetings.

A Second Chance to Review Your Benefits Elections The Total Rewards Portal reopened for a “correction period” that began Tuesday, Nov. 18, and continues through Monday, Nov. 24. During this time, employees are encouraged to log back into the Total Rewards Portal to make sure they have the benefits and coverage they want for 2015, and if not, to make corrections. You’ll also get a second chance if you did not make benefit elections during the Open Enrollment period. Check your mailbox at home for a postcard with more details. And if you opted to receive Open Enrollment text messages, you’ll get one of those too. You may even get a reminder email from HR. So don’t miss this chance to make sure you have the benefits that are best for you. It will be your last opportunity to make changes before benefits become effective on Jan. 1.

All of these efforts are part of a total commitment to enhancing employee engagement and morale. They will continue, and we will add other programs and will be seeking feedback when Darryl Robinson, our chief human resources officer, visits every facility during the coming months, to listen to employee concerns and questions.

Open Enrollment for the Affordable Care Act Is Here The open enrollment period for 2015 coverage under the Affordable Care Act – Nov. 15 to Feb. 15 – is an important time for many people in the communities we serve, and it’s also important for Dignity Health. The health exchanges and Medicaid expansion will allow us to care for more people and to grow as an organization. Please do all you can to tell our patients, who are living without health insurance, that these benefits are available to them.

2015. •

Remind your patients, family members and acquaintances of the following: •

Open enrollment for health coverage in 2015 under the Affordable Care Act extends from Nov. 15 to Feb. 15. Coverage for those who sign up by Dec. 15 will begin on Jan. 1,

No one can be denied health insurance or charged more money because of their medical history. Subsidies are available that will help many individuals and families afford health insurance. And millions of additional people will qualify for Medicaid. Insurance is important so that individuals and their families can access the medical care they need, when they need it, at an affordable price. And in 2015, people who don’t have coverage will have to pay a penalty. Everyone is welcome to visit www.dignityhealth.org/enroll to learn more about signing up for coverage, making changes to their current ACA plan or finding a physician.

Mercy’s Relay for Life Team If you aren’t able to join Mercy’s Relay for Life team, maybe you can help our team reach our goal of raising $2,400. We are currently doing 2 fundraisers: •
