Know the Signs of Diabetes November is American Diabetes Month – a good time to take a harder look at this disease which affects more than 29 million Americans, many of whom don’t even know they have it. People who have diabetes have blood glucose levels that are above normal. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make the right amount of insulin or can’t use its own insulin as well as it should. This causes sugar to build up in your blood.
What are the signs?
If you think you have diabetes, you should see your doctor right away. The symptoms include: • Urinating more than normal • Extreme thirst • Unexplained weight loss • Extreme hunger • Sudden eyesight changes • Tingling or numbness in hands or feet • Feeling very tired much of the time • Very dry skin • Sores that are slow to heal • More infections than normal
What are the causes?
Some reasons why people get type 2, or adult onset, diabetes include older age, obesity, family history, history of gestational diabetes when pregnant, low sugar tolerance, physical inactivity and race. The reasons for type 1, or juvenile onset diabetes, are not as clear. Studies show it could be passed on to you from a family member. Also, it may be caused by a viral infection.
Fill your plate with superfoods Each of the next couple In Roads will feature a different superfood and its health benefits.
Walnuts
What is the treatment?
There is no known cure for diabetes, but it can be helped with medicine and by doing things that are healthy. People with type 1 can control it by taking insulin, eating healthy and being active. Those with type 2 can help their symptoms by eating healthy, exercising and by regular blood glucose testing. In both cases, self-care is important. This means keeping tabs on your blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Healthy habits every day also help. Preventive care – like regular eye exams and other medical checkups – can help keep your diabetes from getting worse.
Walnuts are packed with tryptophan, an amino acid your body needs to create the feel-great chemical serotonin. (In fact, Spanish researchers found that walnut eaters have higher levels of this natural mood-regulator.) Another perk: “They’re digested slowly,” says Dr. David Katz, director of the Yale Prevention Research Center. “This contributes to mood stability and can help you tolerate stress.”
Frequently Asked Questions From the 2014 Open Forums
Q:
Are we going to actually live Hello humankindness, by helping people in our communities? Is there a long-term goal for Hello humankindness in terms of community outreach?
A:
Since our founding, Dignity Health’s mission has been to help people in our communities. Hello humankindness, in fact, recognizes and builds on that tradition. We are already deeply involved in community outreach, service and benefit, and that will continue unchanged. Hello humankindness is about both telling, and doing – living and delivering humankindness to all we serve, both in our facilities and our communities. In 2013, we provided $1.7 billion in community benefit and free care.
Christmas Donations The filled boxes for Samaritan’s Purse’s Operation Shoebox were due on November 20th and the total amount of shoeboxes Mercy Medical Center employees were able to fill was 44. If you weren’t able to participate in Operation Shoebox, consider donating a new, unwrapped toy at the local toy drive on December 5th from 7am-2pm at the corner of G Street and Olive by Auto Zone or at the County Admin Building (2222 M Street). We are also collecting new toys at our employee Christmas party on December 6th for the Merced Fire and Kops for Kids Toy Drive.

Learning Boards Showcase the Widsom of Caregivers St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco has taken to heart the results of their Employee Experience Survey to improve the delivery, response, and consistency of communication between staff and leadership. Twelve departments at St. Mary's have adopted a new program using Learning Boards to demonstrate that employees are being listened to. The name “Learning Boards” comes from the Mayo Clinic as does the concept that optimal patient-centered care occurs in a “Learning Culture.” Here’s how the Learning Boards work: The boards are divided into three sections – red, yellow, and green. When staff offer an idea or suggestion to improve a process or procedure, the idea is summarized on a card and that card is placed on the Learning Board in the red or “Identified” section of the board. As the idea is worked on,
it’s considered “In Process” and the card moves to the yellow portion of the board. And when it’s accepted, the card is moved to the green section. Each month a status report is posted in the lower right quadrant of the board showing staff what they have achieved as a team. “The Learning Board is a great way for me to acknowledge ideas and share progress in implementing those ideas,” said Steven Trussell, Director of the Telemetry Department at St. Mary’s. “The Learning Board also sends an important cultural message about the wisdom of our caregivers and frontline staff. Their ideas are valuable, and when we get a suggestion for an improvement, particularly one that affects patient safety, we need to evaluate it and implement it whenever possible.”
If your department has a Learning Board or something similar, contact Lindsey Gallagher through email at lindsey.gallagher@dignityhealth.org to have your department featured in In Roads.
