5 Years without Ventilator Associated Pnuemonia (VAP) Congratulate our ICU staff, Respiratory Therapy (RT), and physicians for achieving and maintaining the goal of zero rate in VAP for the last 5 years!

Dignity Health Flu Kits Arriving just in Time for Flu Season
What is Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP)? Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a lung infection that develops in a person who is on a ventilator. A ventilator is a machine that is used to help a patient breathe by giving oxygen through a tube placed in a patient’s mouth or nose, or through a hole in the front of the neck. An infection may occur if germs enter through the tube and get into the patient’s lungs. Information found at http://www.cdc.gov/HAI/vap/ vap_ faqs.html
Some of the practices that have been implemented that have contributed to their success include: patient head of bed 30 degrees or greater, tube feeding residual check and oral care every 4 hours, and endotracheal tube care and suctioning as needed. The 0% VAP achievement shows that the collaboration between physicians, ICU nurses, and RTs, as well as their adherence to the ‘Vent Bundle’ has
been both successful in the ICU and beneficial to our patients. It’s quite rare for a hospital to achieve a 0% VAP goal, let alone achieve it for 5 years straight. Thank you to all the teams that have worked together on this amazing acheivment!
Flu season is approaching, and this year Dignity Health Emergency Departments will have another tool to help prevent the flu from spreading in ED waiting rooms. “Flu kits will be distributed in a couple of weeks to our facilities,” said Roy Boukidjian, manager Patient Safety and Accreditation. “They’ll include a tissue box, mask, and hand sanitizer and are to be offered to any individual who comes through the ED with flulike symptoms.” Boukidjian said the new kits will replace “hand-made” flu kits that some facilities have used in the past. “These are branded, pre-assembled Dignity Health flu kits. They are more consistent in appearance and more professional.” And they should help prevent the spread of the flu in our EDs at a time when it is prevalent in the communities we serve.

Supply & Service Resource Management Partners with Dignity Health’s Pharmacies to Ensure a Smooth Omnicell Hardware Upgrade •
Q:
Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, which has completed the upgrade, has already seen nurse usage of the biometric ID jump from 50 percent to 95 percent.
The productivity models seem to punish us whether we hit our numbers or not. Can they or will they be changed? Will you consider changing them?
All cabinet hardware upgrades should be complete by early 2015, with the software refresh scheduled to begin shortly thereafter. Both the hardware and software updates are expected to be in place within 12 months.
A:
Productivity standards are used by many industries and health care providers as one way to be more cost effective at a time when health care reform and payers, including insurers, Medicare, and Medicaid, are demanding cost reductions. Our patient care unit productivity standards are based on our actual history of census and acuity. They are benchmarked both within and outside Dignity Health, and are reviewed and adjusted annually. However, at this point, we don’t think there is additional value in tightening our productivity standards. Instead we need to improve our processes – to reduce duplicative work, waste, and clinical variability. That’s where we need to focus our energy rather than being focused only on hours per unit of service. Also, as noted in the previous discussion of patient care unit staffing, we are revisiting our nursing models, and are determining how to best provide additional resources to the nursing units.
Employee Health Clinic Changes
In late September, Dignity Health hospitals started to undergo a hardware upgrade for the Omnicell automated medication dispensing cabinets that are used in Dignity Health pharmacies. The upgrade includes anesthesia work stations and supply cabinets, and it will improve the cabinets for all hospital users. Hospitals with Cerner Electronic Medical Records will be the first to receive the upgrade, which will take two to three days to complete at most hospitals and a little longer at larger facilities. In all, there are 2,900 cabinets in the Dignity Health system.
Fill your plate with superfoods Each of the next several In Roads will feature a different superfood and its health benefits.
Almonds
Four noticeable updates are part of the upgrade: •
An updated display and interface, making it easier for nurses to read critical information
•
An improved biometric identification system that will aid in enrolling new users with faster scanning and greater accuracy
•
A medication label printer that will allow nurses to print patientspecific labels for a variety of needs
Clinic on the 22nd is cancelled. Clinic on the 28th is now from 7:00AM - 3:30PM

Many dieters shy away from nuts because of their high calorie and fat count. But studies show that eating a handful several times a week can help shed pounds and prevent heart disease. Almonds, in particular, contain lots of monounsaturated fats and fiber. (Healthy swap: Replace peanut butter with almond butter.)

Happy Respiratory Care Week, October 19th -25th 2014! It’s that time of year again! Time to celebrate another great year, full of accomplishments, challenges, and rewards for serving our great community! Respiratory is a department of 30 hard working, dedicated employees, with almost half of the therapists having more than 20 years of experience. They have been wonderful mentors to those who are following in their footsteps to longevity in this wonderful and fulfilling career. It has been said that Respiratory is like the EMTs of the hospital. Responsible for everyone’s airway throughout the facility! Emergencies are their specialty! No job is too big or too small! During this time of celebration, the Respiratory Department would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and support staff for all their hard work in caring for our wonderful patients. It’s a pleasure to work together as a team, accomplishing the goals of great patient care and humankindness. Here’s to looking forward to another great year!

Employees of the Month August - 2014
Janet Pryor-Parr and Cheryl Baijnauth by Daniel Andresen Director of Information Technology
These two ladies are the most dedicated individuals I have ever had the pleasure to work with. Throughout our enterprise when the conversation of Meditech Clinical Informatics comes up, they are viewed as the best. People are amazed at what we can accomplish with only two CIs. I have worked with Janet and Cheryl now for almost 4 years. During this time they have played a major role in many large projects, including the successful attestation for Meaningful Use twice, as well as last month playing a major role in the rollout of CPOE. This will position us to attest for Meaningful Use again beginning this month. Without their dedicated hard work, we could not accomplish what we have!
