“The best way of removing negativity is to laugh and be joyous.” - David Icke

Living Spirituality by Sister Lucille Carreau, DHS Asst. Director of Spiritual Services

Thought:

Living fully includes caring for yourself and giving care to others. Keeping both in balance will make your journey through life rich and rewarding.

Practice:

On one day this week, count how many hours you are giving care to 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

God family co-workers patients church yourself

How balanced are you? Is there any area that can be changed to make it more balanced?

Dr. Peter Pronovost with members of the Performance Excellence Team

Peter Pronovost, M.D., Senior Vice President of Patient Safety and Quality at Johns Hopkins University, told the 120 attendees at the recent Performance Excellence Summit that “Change happens at the speed of trust.” Dr. Pronovost, who was named one of the five most influential physician executives in healthcare by Modern Healthcare, was the keynote speaker for the annual event. He challenged the attendees – Chief Medical Officers, VPs of Medical Affairs, and Performance Excellence professionals – to create an “I will…” statement to enhance their personal delivery of care. The focus of the 2014 summit was collaboration. Presentations discussed innovation, technology and working creatively with partners, both inside and outside of healthcare. Performance Excellence, formerly Transformational Care, is Dignity Health’s standardized approach to process improvement. It is rooted in Lean/ Six Sigma principles that are designed to develop a culture of continuous process improvement. To learn more, contact Carrie Xiong at 564-4240.

2014 Values in Action Award Nominations Nomination Instructions

The Dignity Health Values in Action Award honors individuals and teams for outstanding contributions to our healthcare ministry. While everyone associated with Dignity Health works toward fulfilling our Mission, the efforts of some present an outstanding example of commitment to our Values and Vision. The Values in Action Award pays tribute to these people.

‘Earth as Our Home’ – A Message from Sr. Mary Ellen Leciejewski by Mary Ellen Leciejewski, OP Dignity Health Director of Ecology

The Catholic Sisters for a Healthy Earth have prepared a great resource for Earth Day, April 22, which is fast approaching. This downloadable booklet is a reflection on the various rooms of a house that places each room and its activities into the broader context of our Earth-home. As the sisters say in their press release announcing the booklet, “Too often when we hear the word 'house' we only think of a physical building and its rooms. But what if we began to think of Earth as our house with various rooms? What would we need to do to make this house a true home?

Each year, Values in Action awards will be presented to individuals and teams from each of our Dignity Health facilities that best reflect our Values on the job and in the community. Nominations will be accepted in all five of our values – Dignity, Collaboration, Justice, Stewardship and Excellence – typically with one award presented per facility. The awards will reflect accomplishments achieved in the prior year and be presented at local awards events during current year.

Who is eligible for nomination? The Values in Action award is open to employees, physicians, board members, volunteers, contract employees and Sisters at your facility.

The nominees should demonstrate commitment that distinguishes them as truly outstanding. While specific criteria for each award are described on the nomination form, all nominees generally should: • Contribute to the organization through their personal

commitment of time and energy • Demonstrate Dignity Health values on a daily basis • Be perceived by their peers as leaders who model the Values of the organization • Consistently demonstrates humankindness in the way that one or more core values are lived out and expressed in the nominee’s work. • Have achieved at least one year of service at the hospital or facility.

Filing Deadline

Nominations are open for the 2014 Dignity Health Values in Action awards. These awards honor individuals or teams from our hospital/ facility who personify Dignity Health’s core values based on accomplishments in 2013. Employees, physicians, board members, volunteers, contract employees and Sisters are all eligible for nomination. The Values are described below. Please fill in your nominee(s) name/team and department, and indicate the Value for which you are nominating that person(s) or team. Use the attached form on the next 2 pages to describe your reasons for nominating this person or team. Please submit your nomination and contact information to Janice Wilkerson, Mission Integration Director at 209.564.5007, no later than May 9, 2014.

The sisters go on to say that ecology, in its essence, is the story of where we live. “This story of the house instructs us and informs our actions in managing this household we call Earth.” As we approach Earth Day, I hope you can take a few moments to enjoy this booklet with your family. It suggests simple steps that families can take to “live more sustainably and walk more gently on Earth.”
