Lloyd Dean Meets the Dalai Lama

“There is nothing stronger in the world than gentleness.” -Han Suyin

Two new Hello humankindness Ads Are Now Airing The final two of the four new 15-second television commercials are now on the air.

Click on the picture above to watch the recorded live stream. President/CEO Lloyd Dean shares a laugh with His Holiness the Dalai Lama during one of several lighter moments in their dialogue on commerce, ethics and compassion on Monday, Feb. 24, at Santa Clara University. About 4,000 were in attendance at the event. At far left is Santa Clara University President Michael Engh, S.J., who hosted the event, and at far right is the Dalai Lama’s assistant and translator, Geshe Thupten Jinpa. Dignity Health’s invitation to participate was an outgrowth of ongoing conversations with Jim Doty, M.D., who is the Director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University. Dr. Doty led a panel discussion with Lloyd and the Dalai Lama.

These two commercials, like the two that aired earlier, are based on stories submitted by Dignity Health employees. Unlike our 30-second commercials whose goal is to stand out from the clutter of health-care advertising by avoiding “white coats” and clinical scenes, these spots do feature a clinical setting. Their goal is to more directly tie Hello humankindness™ to the delivery of care at Dignity Health facilities. You can see these new commercials at: https://dignityhealth.org/ humankindness. Click on “Our Message” at the top of the page and then “Campaign.” The new spots are the first two featured on the page.

February is Heart Month

Tasty foods can help you lower cholesterol

Researchers have found that foods such as wild salmon (and other fish rich in Omega-3s), walnuts, oatmeal, oat bran and foods fortified with plant sterols (or stanols) can help control your cholesterol. In fact, some studies have shown that a diet including these “superfoods” may work as well as some cholesterol-lowering medicines to reduce your “bad” LDL cholesterol levels. So give some of these superfoods a try, but be sure to consult your health care provider. While changing your diet may help a lot, many people still need medicine to reduce their risk of heart disease. Also, remember that these foods aren’t cure-alls. A handful of walnuts or a bowl of oatmeal won’t give you a free pass to eat all the high-fat foods you want. To benefit, you still must eat low-fat foods, watch your weight and exercise.

Lenten Regulations

Weekdays of Lent: There is no obligation to fast. However, voluntary acts of self-denial are recommended. Ash Wednesdayand Good Friday: These are days of Fast and Abstinence from meat. There is a limit of one full meal on these days for all between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive. Days of Abstinence: All Fridays in Lent . . . . All who have reached their 14th year are bound to abstain totally from meat on Fridays in Lent.

“Eating a healthy diet is not just about eating a few special foods,” says Suzanne Farrell, MS, RD, a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. “There’s a bigger picture. You need to practice moderation, eat a variety of foods and get enough physical activity.”

Easter DutyObligation: After they have received their First Holy Communion, Catholics are bound by the obligation of receiving Holy Communion at least once a year. This precept should be fulfilled during the Easter Season. Catholics are also bound to confess serious (mortal) sins at least once a year, but this is not limited to the Lenten/ Easter Season.
