Inside information for the employees of Mercy Medical Center
Please Help our Colleagues in the North State If You Can by Darryl Robinson, EVP/Chief Human Resources Officer
Clearly, the need in the North State is great, but I know that our hearts are big.
As many of you are aware, a devastating wildfire swept through the town of Weed, California, earlier this week. While the numbers are still coming in, we know that more than 100 structures have been lost, and most of them were homes. As always, our Dignity Health colleagues rose to the occasion. I’d like to commend the employees of Mercy Medical Center Mt. Shasta for all they’ve done for their community. Among other things, they helped evacuate a nursing home in the middle of Weed and subsequently admitted seven patients. Sadly, we’ve confirmed that six Dignity Health families lost their homes in the fire. Many others have been displaced from their homes because of severe smoke and water damage. Each residence will have to be thoroughly cleaned before families can return to them. And because the flames spread so quickly, families had to flee for their lives, leaving virtually all of their possessions behind.
Service Area Senior Vice President of Operations Mark Korth has already asked North State employees to help those affected. I would like to extend that appeal to the entire system. If you would like to help, you can make a recurring or one-time cash or PTO donation to Mercy Foundation North Mission Services by completing one of the attached pledge cards and returning it to Alisa Johnson at alisa.johnson@ dignityhealth.org (530.926.9318). Alisa will work with payroll to process your donation. Personal checks are also welcomed and should be made out to Mercy Foundation North with “Mission Services” in the memo line. Mail your check to: Mercy Foundation North, 2625 Edith Avenue, Suite E, Redding, CA 96001. Your gifts will be tax deductible. Thank you for keeping our friends and colleagues in your thoughts and prayers. Cash Donation Form PTO Donation Form

Fill your plate with superfoods Each of the next several In Roads will feature a different superfood and its health benefits.
Salmon
Salmon provides a high dose of omega-3 fatty acids, which studies show significantly lower the risk of heart disease. Omega-3 fatty acids fight back by reducing inflammation and slowing the rate of plaque buildup in blood vessels. Salmon is also a good source of lean protein.

Q:
Has outsourcing like Optum360 or Aramark really saved money?
A:
There is a common misunderstanding about Optum360. It is not a separate company that we outsourced to – it is, in fact, an organization jointly owned by both Dignity Health and Optum. Dignity Health’s goals for Optum360 are improvements beyond just cost savings, to improved overall revenue performance, and an improved experience for our patients through more accurate, streamlined, and integrated billing/financial services. We are progressing in our transition to Optum360; and we are confident that the partnership will provide real benefits to our organization and, most importantly, to our patients. However, it is too soon to gauge its financial benefits. Our goals in outsourcing the systemwide management of Environmental and Food & Nutrition Services with Aramark also extends beyond expected annual cost savings to real improvements in the quality of the services provided. Some of those anticipated savings came from workforce reductions; but the majority will come from standardized cleaning practices in environmental services, the use of common menus, and increased cafeteria sales. Under our agreement, Aramark is financially responsible for achieving both the quality improvements and the savings goal.

Recently the hospital Operators have seen an increase in staff dialing “0” for emergency calls rather than dialing 222. This is very problematic and in one case caused the need for an IVOS event. It is imperative that in any emergency the 222 line is always used. If “0” is dialed the call goes into the Operators’ queue to answer. There are often several calls in the queue and the Operator answers them in order of arrival. The Operator has no visibility to know who is in the queue. Dialing “0” will always cause a delay in reaching the Operator. In all emergencies always dial 222.
