The Mercy Medical Center community here in Merced has an impressive legion of faithful supporters. We are blessed with many modest individuals who consider themselves ordinary, but who are in fact extraordinary in the ways they choose to dedicate their time, their talents, and their treasures. Each year, the Mercy Foundation gives special recognition to a small handful of individuals, associates, and physicians with their Spirit of Philanthropy Awards. The presentation was full of spirit this year, as these leaders in our community were recognized (some in their sneakers!) following the 3rd Annual Stroke Awareness 5K Run in combination with Mercy’s Annual Family Festival. After the awards presentation, there was a special recognition luncheon for the award recipients and their guests. During the luncheon, a video presentation featured the contributions of the award recipients and the characteristics of humankindness that they model by example. “Just ‘wow’!” was award recipient Marcee Samberg’s response to the short and professional ‘Six Lessons in Humankindness’ video. “None of us do what we do to be recognized, but it was nice to be there with so many people who care about the medical center and are passionate about health care.” The video can be viewed online at
www.supportmercymerced.org. The first award of the day was presented by Mercy Medical Center President David Dunham to Sal and Susan Dowhaniak. The “Inspiration Award for Philanthropy” is presented to the individual or family who has improved the quality of life in our community by demonstrating exceptional civic responsibility through financial support, innovation, and ethical leadership on behalf of Mercy Medical Center. Sal is a registered nurse in the ICU. He takes care of the hospital’s most critical patients, even when he is off the clock. Over the past 7 years, Sal has given a significant gift from every single paycheck, not only through regular, bimonthly deductions, but also by donating his Paid Time Off to the Mercy Medical Center Merced Foundation, in lieu of taking personal vacations. These funds are used to purchase equipment and provide services for the patients he cares for and others who walk through Mercy’s door. He gives above and beyond. His wife, Susan, was a large collector of Beanie Babies. When she found out that the Pediatric Floor was in need of toys for their small patients, she graciously donated her collection to comfort the children in Mercy’s care. Sal and Susan’s lives truly revolve around care for others, and there is no (continued on page 6)
Ways to Support the Mercy Foundation 1. Make a Donation A gift by check or credit card is the most common and convenient way to give to the Mercy Foundation. Your contribution will help support the Medical Center with the purchase of equipment, expanding patient programs and services and provide training and education to staff. 2. Plan a Future Gift A bequest to the Foundation in your will makes a long lasting contribution to the future of patient care at Mercy. 3. Join the Heritage Club Become a member of our Heritage Club by making a donation of $100 or more every year. Heritage Club members receive invitations to exclusive events and receive special updates on the happenings at Mercy Medical Center. 4. Honor a Loved One A gift to the Mercy Foundation can be a fitting, personal way to honor the memory, successes or milestones in the lives of a loved one. 5. In-Kind Gifts A non-cash gift, also called an “in-kind” gift, is a non-monetary contribution of equipment, supplies, corporate services/ facilities, professional services, or other property that will benefit programs and services at Mercy Medical Center. 6. Gift of Appreciated Stock Giving stock can help combine your charitable giving goals with effective estate and financial planning. By giving appreciated stock to the Mercy Foundation, you can avoid capital gains taxes that would be due as a result of its sale. In this way, you can turn stock market gains into a community investment to provide care for those in greatest need. Gifts of appreciated stock can be made by contacting: UBS Financial Services, Inc. 860 W. Olive Ave, Suite B Merced, CA 95348 (209) 723-3911
An Early Start For Student Volunteers
Students of the Delta Epsilon Mu premedical fraternity at UC Merced were up with the sun to register participants. It was the first collaboration between the student group and the annual Mercy Stroke Awareness 5K Run, but will likely not be the last. “We all enjoyed helping down there in spite of the early hour,” said recent graduate and former Philanthropy CoChair Rudi Patel with a laugh. Nearly 30 Delta Epsilon Mu volunteers registered 300 participants, and 20 ran the 5K themselves. Incoming Chapter President and Pharmacy major at UC Merced April Chan dedicated her Saturday morning to the event. “It was fun to run with familiar faces from the community, including one of the physicians, Dr. Oscar Ramos, who has worked with one of our events!” Delta Epsilon Mu fraternity was founded
first at UC Davis in 1996, with Theta Chapter formed at UC Merced five years ago. The mission of its members is to serve the community by advocating health education and care by participating in service activities, fundraising and outreach programs. Delta Epsilon Mu members at UC Merced sponsored their first annual health fair for low income and under-insured children at the Merced Boys and Girls Club this year, have organized several fundraisers, and hosted a variety of socials throughout the school year. Chan is especially appreciative of their annual pre-health social, which provides the group with the opportunity to interact in an intimate space with mentor health care professionals from Mercy. The Mercy Foundation is excited to have a new volunteer partner group with Delta Epsilon Mu students!
Have You Got a Ticket to Ride? Motorcycle Raffle to Benefit the Mercy UC Davis Cancer Center Standing 6’6” tall, you could guess that Mike Gleason does just about everything in his life extra-large. He started riding motorcycles in the early 70’s, and loved to explore beautiful Southern California on the back of his bike. Memorable trips included rides to Cooks Corner, Rock House, and the Pacific Coast Highway-- often camping along the way. A friend is an astronomy lover, and Mike enjoyed trips they took to Agua Caliente for some stargazing with the friend’s astronomy club. When he was diagnosed with cancer and began treatment in 2003, Mike began to fight the cancer and to adapt his lifestyle to accommodate treatments and the toll

they took on his body. The bike wasn’t getting much road time. Mike recently went to move the bike from the garage and realized he had become too weak to maneuver it out of the garage by himself, much less to be able to ride it anymore. Mike Gleason has spent a lot of time with the cancer care team following an unfortunate series of dire diagnoses in the last decade; but most especially in recent years at the Mercy UC Davis Cancer Center with weekly chemotherapy treatments. “I’ve been getting really good care at Mercy. It’s a really a great group of people, and Dr. Sidhu is an excellent physician.” Mike participates in the support group (continued on page 4)
Mercy Medical Center and Building Young Leaders Connected by Humankindness Patients on the Pediatric Floor of Mercy Medical Center Merced benefitted from a large donation of new and gently used toys and over 120 DVDs late last year from children at the Building Young Leaders Education and Enrichment Center (BYL) in Merced. “The kids and the staff were so excited!” exclaimed Mercy Clinical Educator, Emma Edwards. “We went from this sad little collection of DVDs to big boxes full of fun things to entertain our young patient population. There were handmade cards and posters attached too-- it was a very special and personal donation.” Merced native, Wendy Spencer, was inspired to create Building Young Leaders in Merced over a year ago. She lived in Utah, Denver, and Sacramento before happily relocating back to Merced with her husband and four children. As both a homeschooling mom and a dedicated show choir director, she has always been very passionate about incorporating performing arts into her children’s education plan. When other homeschooling parents, as well as parents of traditionally schooled children, became excited about some of her teaching methods, she was encouraged to open BYL. “It’s been a big undertaking, but also such a great thing,” says Spencer animatedly. “I like to say that BYL is my fifth baby!” Building Young Leaders provides extra-curricular activities such as dance, musical theater, singing, sewing, cooking, art, and science classes to name a few. A leadership curriculum is woven through each of the class offerings, and there is an option for children to participate with a group that provides leadership skill training and promotes service called the Young Leaders Association. Based on the idea that “leadership without action is not leadership,” the children at BYL came together to collect and disinfect the many donations for Mercy. Spencer was thrilled when one of the girls in the Young Leaders Association made a personal connection to the donation for the group. She had been a patient on the kids’ floor and shared with the group that she had watched “The Lion King” movie over and over because they had so few DVDs on site.
“We are focused on enabling children to uncover their missions, talents, and passions in order to bless themselves and their communities,” says Spencer. The busy Director and mother of four laughingly referred to BYL as her ‘fifth baby’, but upon learning that BYL’s donation was being featured to highlight the focus on humankindness at Mercy Medical Center Merced, her tone became more thoughtful. Wendy Spencer chose to share that she was actually pregnant with a fifth child last year who didn’t survive to term. A heartbreaking situation for the Spencer family provided an opportunity for Wendy to experience very memorable humankindness first hand from the nursing staff at the Family Birth Center. She recalls being “tucked away” from the rooms where newborn cries could be heard during the time she was dealing with her own personal loss. “The staff was SO kind and SO gentle,” Spencer offered. “I felt so cared for there.” Through experiences of humankindness in the Mercy Medical Center community, positive and powerful connections are being created.

Stroke survivor, Dennis Koplin is joined by his family as they participate in this year’s race. The Third day of May turned out to be a sunny and successful day for the 3rd Annual Stroke Awareness 5K Run. Over 350 people registered to run, roll, or stroll in the event -- twice the number of participants that we had last year! “It was a lot of fun!” according to incoming Foundation Board Chair Carla Kelley. Kelley coerced a group of friends that she regularly attends movies with to participate in the 5K that day along with her. “This community is growing and there is real synergy with the ongoing growth at Mercy Medical Center.” The event was designed as a fun way to raise awareness in the Mercy Medical Center community about how to identify and avoid risk factors
for strokes. Also, to help family, friends and neighbors recognize the signs when someone is experiencing a stroke, and the need to act fast on their behalf. Mercy’s prestigious new Stroke Program will benefit from gifts totaling $9,270 to the Foundation as a result of the event. We’d like to thank the generous and health conscious people in Merced who supported the 3rd Annual Stroke Awareness 5K Run! A special thanks goes out to the members of the UC Merced Delta Epsilon Mu for volunteering their time to help with the event. Race results and photos are now available on our website at www.supportmercymerced.org.

which meets monthly at the Cancer Center and was asked to speak at Mercy Foundation’s Health Summit in the Spring. In the course of his presentation, he mentioned the motorcycle he could no longer operate and his desire to donate it to benefit the Mercy UC Davis Cancer Center. By coincidence, some of the people in attendance at the Health Summit were American Legion Riders—veterans who are motorcycle enthusiasts. They were inspired to action by both the staff and facilities at the Mercy UC Davis Cancer Center and by cancer survivor Mike Gleason. “Mike really inspired us,” said Vice President of the American Legion Riders, Jack Perry. “He’s got a tattoo of the Grim Reaper on his shoulder with five dates inked in black and crossed out in red. They are the dates he wasn’t supposed to live past each time he was diagnosed with a new type of cancer or recurrence. We were also very impressed with the services at Mercy UC Davis Cancer Center and know there is a need.” After some discussions, a plan formed that included fixing up the bike and having the American Legion Riders raffle the bike off. The consensus among the Riders was to keep the efforts and the money raised local to benefit the people of Merced. The group is no stranger to fundraisers, having sponsored “Legacy Runs” to raise money for children of veterans who have fallen since 9/11, and participated in the Breast Cancer Awareness Rides in
Merced for the last few years. Several members of the American Legion Riders have also been personally affected by cancer and were anxious to have a positive impact on cancer care in the community. “The plans are really coming together,” said Perry. “I think we are well on our way to a sizable donation.” An ‘extra-large’ sized goal of raising $10,000 with this raffle has been set by the American Legion Riders. The bike Mike Gleason is donating is a 2002 1500cc Kawasaki Volcano Drifter. He described it as a model resembling an Indian Chief motorcycle from the 1940’s. Local sponsors are contributing their talents to the cause, providing a new paint job and new handlebars for a custom look. The bike would retail for over $5,000. Only 500 tickets will be sold, and the cost per ticket is $20. The bike will be on display and tickets will be sold at the Merced Speedway, car shows, and special events in town. The final drawing for the raffle will take place on November 11th following a run that’s still in the planning phases, but will likely go through the Mariposa Foothills. The money raised from the bike raffle will support the ongoing Mercy Foundation Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) campaign. “I know how valuable in EUS is,” says Gleason. “I’ve used it.” For more information on how to support this campaign by purchasing raffle tickets, please contact the American Legion Riders Cancer Fundraiser sponsors at (209) 769-8498.

Foundation Director Lisa Wegley with Dr. Mark and Marcee Samberg, this year’s Physician Champion Award winners. beginning or end to their work. The “Community Champion Award” recognizes an individual that demonstrates selflessness and dedication to the community through generous donations of time, talent and treasure to furthering Mercy Foundation’s mission. The award also recognizes someone who is dedicated to improving patient care to Merced and its surrounding communities. The Giampaoli family received the 2014 Community Champion Award. The Giampaoli family own and operate Live Oak Farms in Le Grand, California. The company was passed down to three brothers, Raymond, Elmo and Dario from their parents who founded it. Live Oak Farms prides itself on practicing the principles of honesty, hard work, dedication, love of family and importance of community. Raymond and his wife, Maria along with Dario and his wife, Josephine, are involved in the community in many ways including the Community Foundation of Merced County, Merced Farm Bureau, California Women for Agriculture and many others. They have a deep love for Le Grand and Merced County as a whole. Raymond and Dario’s late brother, Elmo, lovingly left the Mercy Foundation in his trust. The largest gift to the Foundation to date, his donation helped to build the chapel in the new hospital. This is an amazing gift for many patients and families seeking comfort and reflection during difficult times. “Elmo was the inspiration for our involvement with Mercy,” said Maria Giampaoli. “He had a real affection for the hospital and our family is glad to do whatever we can do for the Foundation.” The “Partner in Excellence” Award is presented to the business that exhibits a philanthropic philosophy which includes providing financial support and volunteer assistance to Mercy Medical Center. This year the award went to the Merced City Firefighters of Local 1479. As individuals these firefighters are prepared to put themselves in harm’s way on a daily basis in service to the citizens of Merced. In addition to their primary jobs, these Merced City Firefighters hold a breast cancer awareness t-shirt drive each year to raise money for the Mercy-UC Davis Cancer Center. They spend countless hours selling t-shirts in the halls of Mercy and the booths of community fairs so that they can help provide free support to cancer patients and their families. Services they have supported include a cancer support group and the purchase of Radiant Wraps, which are gowns that help make breast cancer patients more comfortable during treatment.
“We’re always looking for ways to improve our service to the community, and this type of recognition helps motivate the guys through the hard times and emergencies you get on the job,” said Deputy Chief and 21 year veteran firefighter Don Long. “People are usually pretty upset when they see us wearing our gear in an emergency, but they love to see a bunch of us in pink t-shirts raising money for breast cancer awareness.” The “Physician Inspiration Award for Philanthropy” is presented to the physician who has improved the quality of life in our community by demonstrating exceptional civic responsibility through financial support, innovation and ethical leadership on behalf of Mercy Medical Center. Dr. Frank Berry, Jr. is a very deserving recipient of the Mercy Foundation’s Physician Inspiration Award. Dr. Berry shows kindness to his patients and his staff on a daily basis. When asked for words to describe Dr. Berry, words like “generous,” “softspoken,” “kind,” “big-hearted,” and “compassionate” were used. His staff maintains that he is a very humble individual who consistently and compassionately promotes healing in the Mercy Medical Center community. Financial contributions and the skilled ability to heal are Dr. Berry’s gifts to this community, and his gifts have been an inspiration to others for more than 27 years. The “Physician Champion Award,” recognizes a physician that demonstrates selflessness and dedication to the community through generous donations of time, talent and treasure towards furthering Mercy Foundation’s mission. The award also recognizes someone who is dedicated to improving patient care to Merced and its surrounding communities. This year’s Physician Champion Award was awarded to Dr. Mark and Marcee Samberg. The Sambergs are highly-trained health care professionals who lead by example. They are both trailblazers in the Mercy Medical Center Community. Dr. Samberg works full time as a pediatric and adult urologist. In the little spare time he has, he has devoted himself to additional responsibilities, such as co-chairing the Physician Campaign for the new hospital. Without his leadership and dedication, this community would not benefit from such a beautiful, state-of-the-art facility. Marcee Samberg is a registered nurse and Director of Service Excellence. She served as a Board Member for 9 years with the Mercy Foundation,

Planned Giving: Charitable Bequests A large number of charitable organizations in the United States receive gifts through an individual’s will, known as bequests. In fact, over $7 billion were received by charities in the U.S. from bequests. A bequest is considered a planned gift because the decision to give is made at one point, but the gift is not actually received until a future date. Other types of planned gifts that have been highlighted in Firmly Rooted include Charitable Gift Annuities, Charitable Remainder Trusts and Life Estates. Planned gifts provide substantial support to hard-working, worthwhile charities with vision, charities with purpose, and charities which enable the noble missions for causes we care about. The Mercy Foundation has been the recipient of a number of planned gifts, allowing the Foundation to provide funding for the medical and health needs of our community. These gifts are significant in building Mercy Medical Center Merced into a progressive facility that supports a healthy future for the people of Merced, regardless of their ability to pay. A bequest is a very uncomplicated method of providing support to any charity you choose. It entails a basic codicil or addendum to a will or trust. Sample language for bequests: (This is not intended to be legal advice. A qualified professional should always be contacted before completing any legal agreement).
Specific Amount - “I give to Mercy Foundation, ____ dollars to be used for____” Percentage of Estate - “I give to Mercy Foundation, ___ percent of my estate to be used for___” Contingent Gift - “I give to Jane Doe (my niece) ____ dollars, but if she is not then living, then I give the same to Mercy Foundation, to be used for___” Residuary - “All of the rest, residue and remainder of estate, both real and personal, of whatever kind and wherever situated, which I may own or have the right to dispose of at the time of my death I give to Mercy Foundation, to be used for ____” If you are moved to provide support to a specific program or initiative at Mercy Medical Center, the Mercy Foundation would be honored to help facilitate your wishes. The Mercy Foundation recently formed the Heritage Circle Legacy Society. This society is a recognition organization for those individuals who have been generous to the Foundation in their will or trust, and would like to be recognized at the time their bequest is arranged. As a member of the Heritage Circle Legacy Society, you will be provided with special invitations to meetings and educational events at Mercy Medical Center Merced. If you are interested in joining the Heritage Circle Legacy Society, please contact the Foundation at (209) 564-4200.

and was a member of the Capital Campaign Cabinet. Marcee founded the Emergency Department Volunteer Program 8 years ago, and continues to coordinate the program to give UC Merced students hands-on experience in a health care setting. This couple has been donating significantly to the Mercy Foundation for 12 years. While they embrace new technology and medicine, Dr. Mark and Marcee Samberg believe there is nothing more important than the personal patient-physician-nurse relationship. They strive to strengthen this ideal with each patient they treat. The “Physician Partner in Excellence Award” is presented to the medical business that exhibits a philanthropic philosophy that includes providing financial support and volunteer assistance to Mercy Medical Center. Bear Creek Anesthesia Medical Group, this year’s Physician Partner in Excellence recipient, is a cohesive team of doctors who show compassion to patients on a daily basis. They provide professional support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Regardless of the time of day or night, they are on-call to provide care for patients of all ages. Whether it’s soothing a mother-to-be during labor or easing the fears of a patient about to have surgery, these anesthesiologists provide exceptional care. During your procedure, they are your second physician in the room, focused on the patient’s needs so that others can focus on the surgical intervention. Collectively, these physicians have donated graciously to provide patients in Merced County with the best medical experience possible.

“Ours is a healthier and more compassionate community as a result of the significant contributions each of these Spirit of Philanthropy Award recipients make available for the collective good,” says Mercy Medical Center President David Dunham. The Mercy Foundation is so proud to honor each of these dedicated professionals and leaders in this community, who support the mission of Mercy Medical Center Merced beyond expectations.
