MY SPARSHOLT STORY

• Practical animal handling and behaviour with dogs, avian and other exotic species • Health and nutrition

I’d always wanted to work with animals, but had no idea how or where. I needed both a comprehensive theoretical course and competitive practical skills so that I could begin working in the industry as soon as possible. Sparsholt delivered on both criteria.

• Breeding and welfare

I remember touring the Animal Management Centre and being overawed at the prospect of working with so many beautiful and interesting species. Having the opportunity to implement training programmes, become more practised in operant conditioning, and do really special and memorable things like acclimatise the whitecheeked turacos to humans in their enclosure, was exceptional for me.

• Conservation and wildlife rehabilitation

I’m starting at the University of Lincoln this September, where I’ll be studying Behaviour and Welfare. What I learned at Sparsholt and the College itself are so specialised that I know I’ll be going forwards with an advantage in animal science.”

MY SPARSHOLT STORY

I am hoping to develop a career in wildlife conservation and felt this course would provide a good foundation in the knowledge and skills required, covering the practical skills needed in habitat management and teaching the basic ecology that underpins them. It has also provided me with practical training and the opportunity to obtain C&G qualifications in the use of essential machinery, such as chainsaws, brush-cutters and ATVs. I’ve really enjoyed making new friends and sharing their enthusiasm for conservation, as well as learning new skills and concepts and being able to apply these in the field. Whenever I visit a new place, the first question I now ask myself is why it looks the way it does, and how it would change if it wasn’t managed! I also enjoyed the location of Sparsholt which allows students to experience some of the habitats they study within the College estate and take advantage of this by going for walks in free time. For me, the highlight of the course was the final year trip to the Cairngorms National Park which allowed us to experience montane habitat.” Craig Welsby, Extended Diploma in Conservation and Wildlife Management graduate

MY SPARSHOLT STORY

I first joined Mildmay Farm and Stud after leaving Sparsholt. I spent three years here gaining experience in thoroughbred stud work and then moved on to specialise in thoroughbred yearling sales preparation and foaling. From here I applied for a position at The Royal Stud, progressing to Assistant Stud Groom for two years. After this I was offered the chance to manage Mildmay Farm and Stud where I started my training, becoming a Director in 2016. My time at Sparsholt gave me a fantastic grounding in horse management, providing me with essential skills that I use daily at the stud and many industry connections that I remain in contact with.” Oliver Nash, Level 3 Diploma in Equine Studies graduate and stud Director

MY SPARSHOLT STORY

Sparsholt has a reputation of delivering the best courses with excellent facilities. The fact that it offered so many secondary qualifications, incredible trips and a chance to compete at the RHS Chelsea Flower show was a huge bonus. The RHS Chelsea Flower show is an experience I’ll remember forever, from the excitement of planning, the stress of getting the garden together, to the build and pride of show week. The trips we went on were awesome - I was able to visit some amazing gardens and nurseries and meet knowledgeable people from within the industry. I am now hoping to set up as a selfemployed gardener, using an organic approach to help people create the space they want in their gardens. The business module in the first year gave me the knowledge of how to set up a business, including all of the paperwork, legal requirements and record keeping and the organics module taught me that you can adopt an organic approach no matter what size of garden you have and that it benefits the environment.

FOOTBALL ACADEMY (CONTINUED)

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE

LEVEL 2 DIPLOMA/LEVEL 3 EXTENDED DIPLOMA

LEVEL 2

Duration One year

Entry Requirements If you’re 16-19 years old and a talented and committed football player, becoming a student in the Sparsholt College Football Academy will develop your potential while you work towards either a Level 2 Diploma in Sport or Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport, Coaching, Development and Fitness. All players train at least three times per week and play in a comprehensive match programme. In 2015/16 the Football Academy at Sparsholt ran a total of seven teams competing in the Football Conference Youth Alliance, Sydenhams Football League (Wessex), Hampshire County Youth League (Sunday), and Hampshire Colleges Football Leagues. We recognise that players develop at different times and as a result have a tiered programme for players of all abilities. Our coaches regularly evaluate performance levels throughout matches and in training - finding the correct level of football for each player to train and play and giving a target to improve individual performance and move into the next tier.

Elite Tier

Tier 1

In direct partnership with Southampton FC, the Sparsholt/Saints Elite Centre has the fundamental goal of producing professional footballers for Southampton FC. Most players in the Elite Tier have had experience of Academy level football and their programme is structured to give the best possible chance to succeed as a professional footballer.

This programme allows players to train in a high quality, competitive environment and play at the highest level of college football in Hampshire. There are opportunities for players to progress into the Elite Development Tier and to attach to external clubs for weekend football to develop further.

Elite Development Tier The Elite Development Tier will allow players to compete at the same level as players within the Elite Tier, with genuine opportunity for players to improve and progress. Players within the development tier will benefit from an extremely competitive environment involving all the key aspects a footballer needs to improve their performance.

What will I learn? During this course you’ll gain a solid foundation in outdoor adventure that will prepare you for progression to the Level 3 course or into employment.
