WHAT’S NEW AT ANDOVER COLLEGE? Bringing skills, creativity and technology together.

Future Skills & Technology Centre Open for students this September, the College’s new £3.9 million technology centre brings together industry standard facilities and teaching spaces providing students with the skills and knowledge employers want. The construction, electrical and engineering industries will always have a need for skilled employees and the value of learning a trade remains high. But in the new technological age it is important our students learn the latest techniques on the most up-to-date equipment – combining traditional skills with technological advances. Comprising specialist workshops for carpentry, brickwork, electrical installation, motor vehicle and engineering – the centre includes specialist teaching spaces as well as bespoke workshops kitted out with digital white boards and electronic diagnostic tools alongside traditional toolkits, engines and work boots!

Digital Futures Our world is increasingly dominated by digital technology – never more so than in education and training where we ensure our students are at the forefront of technological developments and can become the entrepreneurs and creative innovators of the future. We are launching an inspiring new approach to our computing, digital and creative media courses – bringing together units that can be combined to create the skills and expertise you need to open doors to your future career. Whether you’re interested in networking and hardware or app development, gamification or animation we provide you with the opportunity to combine the technical and creative elements that will shape your future.

We have also developed a seamless approach between college based teaching and Apprenticeships which provide on the job experience while paying a training wage.

Our research with the computing and creative industries shows that the digital experts of the future need to combine technical, mathematical and creative talent whichever direction they go in. We want to ensure that our students are completely prepared with the underpinning skills they need for university and also dynamic employment in industry.

Our new centre houses Construction, Motor Vehicle and Electrical courses.

Our professional hairdressing and beauty therapy salon (Elements) is open to the public for all hair and beauty treatments (term time only). Students gain real world skills as well as receiving a 50% discount!

Dedicated Sixth Form Centre Our dedicated Sixth Form has its own building equipped with all the facilities needed for your course. With over 40 AS and A Level subjects to choose from, our Sixth Form provides you with everything you need to achieve outstanding results and is the perfect pathway to university.

The Lights Theatre This professional theatre space next to the college is a great resource for our Performing Arts students larger productions.

We have three study centres on campus for you to focus on your assignments and access all the resources you need for personal study and research. Our dedicated Learning Resource team are also on hand to help source additional information as well as helping with your research techniques.

A highly successful former student who completed the Foundation Art and Design Diploma at Andover and went on to study at Royal College of Art in London. Following an internship at Adidas in Germany she continued her studies to achieve a Masters at Royal College of Art in Men’s Footwear and has just been awarded the Vogue Talent Prize at the International Talent Support event in July 2016. Helen is now working for Adidas.

Achieved A*A*A* in Physics, Chemistry and Further Maths and is going to study Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge.

AMY SULLIVAN Has focussed on her chosen career by achieving top grades in her BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care and is going on to study Midwifery at Bournemouth University.

HOW TO APPLY 1 CHOOSE Choose the subjects you want to follow so they fit with any career plans you have. Do you have the right entry requirements?

2 APPLY Complete the online application form. We will then ask you in for an interview. Your parents or guardians are more than welcome to come with you.

4 ENROL During the summer we will send you a time and date when you need to come in and enrol. Don’t worry if you didn’t get the grades – come and talk to us anyway as there are other options available to you.

3 ATTEND A TASTER DAY Once you have received your offer you will be invited to a special Applicants Taster Day where you will meet your tutor, other students and experience what college life is really like!

ACCOUNTING

A LEVEL

DURATION One - two years

About the course

You will explore many aspects of accounting, including preparation of final accounts for sole–traders, partnerships, limited and manufacturing companies. Topics covered are invaluable tools used in all aspects of accounting by those who are self–employed through to managers. This course requires you to be able to think logically and have an interest in problem solving.

What next?

A Level Accounting is widely sought after by employers and in Higher Education. Career paths may include finance manager, director within industry, management accountant and chartered accountant.

ANIMATION A LEVEL

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Five GCSEs at A* – C (including a C/5 or higher in English and Maths) A GCSE point score above 5.5 is recommended BTEC Level 2 Qualifications considered in subject related courses

DURATION Two years

About the course

This course combines both artistic and creative components of animation with the required practical and technical skills. It will develop your visual storytelling, character development and editing skills. Throughout the duration of the course you will study the animation production process and 2D and 3D software skills in our Digital Media Suite.

What next?

A–Level Animation can be continued at Higher Education and offers career paths in animation, publishing, modelling and directing.

About the course

You will develop work in 2D and 3D disciplines exploring a wide range of materials, techniques and processes before applying your knowledge to one specialist area such as design, jewellery, printmaking or sculpture. This course offers a more applied approach than the other art–based subjects we offer.

What next?

Art, Craft and Design can be continued at Higher Education and offers career paths including model–making for film and television props, medical prosthetics, stage design and interior design.

Biology is the study of life from whole ecosystems to the structure of the human body. You will explore topics such as genetic engineering, human health and disease, biodiversity, ecology, physiology of exercise and climate change. This course allows you to combine practical testing with theory to enhance your learning.

What next?

There are many different career paths including medicine, ecology, dentistry, midwifery, nursing and other biomedical and healthcare professions. Biology is highly regarded within Higher Education.

About the course

You will study elements of the language, literature, religion and history of the classical world to gain an understanding of the culture, politics and social life of Greece and Rome at significant periods in our history. You will read, amongst other texts, Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey and plays by Euripides, Aeschylus, Sophocles and Aristophanes.

What next?

A Level Classics demonstrates a depth of thought and analysis that is valued by many employers and universities, and can lead to careers in research, archaeology, historian and curator.

COMPUTER SCIENCE A LEVEL

About the course

Computer Science is relevant to the modern and changing world of computing. It is a practical subject where you will apply the academic principles learned in the classroom to real world systems. It is a creative subject that combines invention and excitement, and can look at the natural world through a digital prism. Learners will develop computational thinking, helping develop the skills to solve problems, design systems and understand the power and limits of human and machine intelligence. Learners will develop an ability to analyse, critically evaluate and make decisions.

What next?

The A Level Computer Science programme will enable you to progress in to a variety of careers including cyber security, IT software development and the gaming industry.

About the course

You will develop an academic and practical approach to drama through working with text, learning in detail about plays, different styles of theatre and the work of playwrights and practitioners who have revolutionised theatre.

What next?

Drama and Theatre studies can lead to a career path in professional acting, television presenting, performing artistry, theatre directing or production.

You will explore aspects of both English Language and Literature. In addition to exploring texts such as ‘Wuthering Heights’ and ‘The Bloody Chamber’ by Angela Carter, you will use non–fiction texts to analyse language, looking specifically at the ways in which writers and speakers present places, societies and events.

What next?

A Level English is highly valued by employers and in Higher Education. Career paths could include teaching, journalism and media or writing.

ENGLISH LITERATURE A LEVEL

You will explore classic literary texts from novels, to plays and poetry. About the course

Environmental Studies is the scientific study of how the environment supports us and how our way of life threatens these support systems. The subject will cover strategies on how we can promote sustainable living. The course will also explore environmental and ethical issues surrounding wildlife and conservation.

What next?

Environmental studies complements career paths in nature conservation, forestry, climatology and the energy and water industry. This subject is also highly sought after in Higher Education.

EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION – CREATIVE WRITING AS LEVEL

About the course

Through the Extended Project Qualification, you will develop and explore a range of written forms and genres, learning different writing style as well as how to develop technical control and enable creativity. The course offers you a range of skills that can be applied in the real world such as clarity of thought and expression, critical and analytical skills, team working and giving and receiving feedback.

DURATION Two years

About the course

You will develop skills in a broad range of textile and fashion based processes and technologies within a functional or decorative context. You will be taught by textile and fashion specialists within a purpose built studio and explore printing and image transfer, knit, stitch, weave, felt making and garment making. The facilities include a screen exposure unit and a dye room.

What next?

Fashion and textile design can lead to a career path in menswear and women’s wear, textile surface pattern, costume design and fashion marketing.

About the course

This subject introduces you to a wide range of references whilst developing your skills as a film maker. You will learn about the use of selected media as a means of communicating personal ideas through storyboards, angles, shot design, composition, lighting and the differences between interior and exterior locations.

What next?

Film making can lead to career progression in animation, journalism, communication studies and the film industry.

This one year course prepares adult learners who want to study at degree level, but do not currently have the qualifications to apply. Successful students have gone on to study social work, dental hygiene, primary school teaching, paramedical science, midwifery and mental health nursing. The course can also open doors to areas of study such as veterinary medicine, history, criminology and law. We provide a supportive ‘family friendly’ environment with great ICT facilities. Lectures are delivered in small groups and you will have a personal tutor. Get in and go far... with an Apprenticeship! There are more than 40 Apprenticeship programmes available, across a wide range of professions. Apprenticeships are a great way to earn money and gain a nationally recognised qualification through a mix of training in college and in the workplace. It features a total of six units that are assessed through coursework and practical activities and is the equivalent of one A Level. You will have a keen interest in music, either as a performer or consumer and it is not necessary to play an instrument. Experience of music software sequencing or recording is desirable but not essential. You will develop your knowledge of music sequencing software and the transferable skills that facilitate the realisation of musical ideas in both acoustic and electronic environments. BTEC LEVEL 3 CERTIFICATE

DURATION One year

About the course

This course provides a viable alternative to the traditional A Level science route. It will enable you to develop an understanding from a vocational context in order to see how science works in the real–world and develop knowledge and skills that can be used in the industry. Science is, and should be, hands–on so you are expected to fully engage with practical experiments. If you want to study a BTEC Science course you must complete this certificate. You will then be able to progress on to a Level 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma.

What next?

Continued study in Further Education through the Subsidiary Diploma Applied Science of your choice as well as progression to Higher Education such as Research, Technician and Physiotherapist.

APPLIED BIOLOGY

DURATION One year

About the course

This course provides a viable alternative to the traditional A Level biology route. It will enable you to develop an understanding of the structure and functions of the human body as well as exploring genetics and genetic engineering. You will undertake a wide range of practicals through these units, alongside microbiology, to develop knowledge and skills in this subject area.

What next?

This pathway provides progression opportunities in to Higher Education as well as enhancing skills and understanding to gain employment in the science industry.

It will develop your chemical laboratory techniques and practical analysis skills to support your theoretical understanding of chemistry. Due to its vocational context, you will learn the industrial applications of both chemical reactions and organic chemistry and how chemistry is leading the way in technological developments.

It provides a scientific approach to the process of criminal investigations and explores genetics, forensic evidence, collection and analysis as well as understanding the psychological reasoning of criminal behaviour. It combines both practical and theory to develop your understanding of forensic science.

About the course

The Applied Medical Science programme will enable you to develop an understanding, from a vocational context, of important medical topics that impact greatly on the Healthcare profession. You will explore practical techniques such as microbiology as well as developing an understanding of diseases and infections. Alongside these areas of biology, you will examine the role of physics in medicine.

ANDOVER ACADEMY OF SPORT Introduction

If you are talented and committed to sports and aged between 16 and 19, then our specialist programmes develop sporting potential whilst working towards national qualifications. You will benefit from: • • • •

Experienced coaches, including visiting coaches A personalised programme of fitness and nutrition Competition in regional and national fixtures Sports technology and resources such as video analysis to perfect techniques and skills

You don’t necessarily have to be a sport student to be a part of the academy. Depending on your GCSE results, you will study either the Level 2 BTEC in Sport or the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sports Performance and Excellence. You are also encouraged to take additional qualifications such as Coaching, First Aid, Active IQ Fitness Instructor, Functional Skills and Community Sports Leadership Award to improve and extend prospects for employment. Entry to the Academy Programme is subject to a trial and interview.

MEN’S FOOTBALL ACADEMY Head coach: Ron Bertie (UEFA A Licence, FA Youth Award 1,2 and 3) Our Men’s Football Academy is designed for those of you who are football players with a high standard of skill and who have been identified as having the potential to progress to a career as a professional player. You will participate in the HCSA Under 19 League, HCSA Under 19 Cup and English Schools National Cup Under 18’s. You may also play in the Wessex League, Conference Youth League and South West Counties Youth League.

About the course

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Our Academy operates a 2–tier system, constantly reviewed by the coaching team. It is designed for • Those of you who have ambitions of becoming a professional player and have football experience with professional clubs at academy level • Young players who wish to develop your football skills within a professional but less intense training environment

Level 2 – One year Level 3 – Two years

Level 2 – four GCSEs at D/3 Level 3 – five GCSEs at A*– C/4 (to include English)

Our Academy develops your potential whilst working towards a sports qualification at either Level 2 or 3. This is built around our football programme with academy training three times per week and is supplemented by a comprehensive match programme, which includes FA Youth Cup, Conference Youth Alliance League, the Hampshire Colleges Football League and the South West Counties Youth League. You will be required to purchase your training kit which is approximately £160.

What next?

The Football Academy allows progression to Higher Education to study any Sport–related degree. Students have also been successful in obtaining football scholarships in the US. Through additional qualifications, students can gain direct employment as coaches or gym instructors, for example.

LEVEL 2 CERTIFICATE/EXTENDED CERTIFICATE About the course

The course covers a range of practical and theoretical aspects and provides an ideal opportunity to progress onto Level 3 Sport courses or directly into employment. The course is flexible and allows you to take other GCSE subjects alongside it. You will also gain additional qualifications in Coaching, First Aid and Level 1 AIQ in Healthy Living. You should be prepared for all lessons; either practical or theory based, and apply yourselves at all times.

DURATION One year

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Four GCSEs at D/3 or equivalent

What next?

The course provides progression on to Level 3 courses such as the BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport. The development of skills such as leadership, confidence and discipline on the course will support entry in to a range of sport and non–sport related careers.

You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. You will develop an understanding of the human body and how it responds to exercise. The importance of fitness testing and training will be examined in order to understand how performance in sport can be maximised.

A passion for sport or fitness is a must and a desire to learn and develop is key to success in the qualification. We stretch and challenge you to strive for the best you can achieve; therefore, you require high levels of self–motivation. The programme covers a wide range of subjects such as Sports psychology, nutrition, fitness and sports coaching. You will also have the opportunity to gain additional qualifications such as Fitness Instructing, Kettlebells and Circuits.

SPORT – PERSONAL TRAINING ACTIVE IQ LEVEL 3

DURATION One year

About the course

This qualification will give you the knowledge and skills to work with individuals and groups of clients in a personal training setting. It develops an understanding of exercise programming in order to maximise client fitness sessions as well as applying principles of nutrition to increase gains. It also provides access onto the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at Level 3.

What next?

The successful achievement of this qualification will allow you to gain employment in a gym or similar fitness organisation, or alternatively in a self–employed capacity.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS A suitable Level 2 qualification in Gym Instructing or a Level 3 Sport qualification (you will be able to work towards the Gym Instructing qualification alongside this programme) The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential, therefore a degree of physical fitness is necessary
