English at Andover College provides a stimulating environment in which to study one of three different pathways. Depending on your area of interest, you could study classic texts, learn how language is used or write creatively. While English builds on the skills learnt at school, content is very different. It is important to explore the different pathways to find the right one for you!

ENGLISH LANGUAGE

GCSE • LEVEL 2 Employers in all sectors require you to have English qualifications as this demonstrates ability in a core subject. This one-year course allows you the opportunity to re-sit GCSE English Language. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS GCSE English at grade 3. WHAT NEXT GCSE English at grade 4 is required by many employers and for entry to university.

A LEVEL • LEVEL 3 You will study how language is used in written, spoken and electronic forms and identify how these genres affect how language is structured. A LEVEL • LEVEL 3 You will explore aspects of both English Language and Literature through a range of set texts which are exclusively modern – 20th and 21st century. ENGLISH LITERATURE A LEVEL • LEVEL 3 You will explore classic literary texts, from novels to plays and poetry. The course uses literature from a range of periods, such as Chaucer, Shakespeare and literature of the 21st century. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Five GCSEs at grade 9–4, including a minimum Level 5 in GCSE English Language. BTEC Level 2 qualifications considered in subject related courses. WHAT NEXT A Level English is highly valued by employers and in Higher Education. Career paths may include speech therapy, journalism, teaching,

translation and editing. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Five GCSEs at grade 9–4, including a minimum Level 5 in GCSE English Language and English Literature. Career paths could include teaching, journalism and media or

professional writing. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Five GCSEs at grade 9–4, including a minimum Level 5 in GCSE English Literature. BTEC Level 2 qualifications considered in subject related courses.
