UCS has given me the confidence to say ‘I can do this’ Before joining Sparsholt I had been a legal secretary for 10 years, so started as a mature student. I have come away not only with a degree but also with self‑belief in my capabilities and increased confidence. The lecturers were experienced, knowledgeable, helpful and there were always lots of debates and laughs along the way. The advantages of a course at UCS have to be the practical elements and study trips which allowed us to see various habitats, lots of wildlife and to talk to different people within the industry. I have always found Sparsholt a friendly and welcoming place, and there’s always so much going on. During each year of the course we found work placements, this is where I was introduced to the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust. In my second year, I spent three weeks as a student research assistant at the Trust and ultimately found the job I love. The position offered volunteering opportunities, and this has successfully led to a position as a Research Assistant for the ‘Waders for Real’ project in the Avon Valley, a project aimed at reversing the decline of breeding waders. Since I began my new job I have experienced a great deal and have been able to apply all the skills I learnt at Sparsholt to my new position. Jodie, Research Assistant Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Graduate

The support was excellent! I also enjoyed getting hands-on with the animals. I learnt how to study effectively and felt a lot more prepared for my Foundation Degree.

Access to Higher Education (Land-based studies) This one-year fast-track course was designed by universities to prepare adult learners who wish to study at degree level but do not currently have the relevant entry criteria or qualifications, have been out of education for some time, or who wish to return to education to change to a land-based career. It is specifically designed to give you the foundation skills and knowledge for studying a range of land-based degrees at University Centre Sparsholt or elsewhere, and is widely accepted by a number of colleges and universities throughout the UK.

79% of students progress to degree studies (2018) • Provides a fast-track route to undergraduate study • Continuous assessment with no end of year exams • Gain important GCSE English or maths alongside this course • Includes three weeks’ work placement

What will I learn? You will study a range of core subjects including Science, higher education Study Skills, Business, Industry Research Project and a practical Land-based Skills unit. Additionally, you will follow some specialist units (subject to availability) in either animal studies, equine studies, ecology and conservation, fishery studies or horticulture with access to our extensive facilities. Teaching is delivered by higher education lecturers who also teach on our undergraduate courses through a supportive mix of taught sessions, seminars, tutorials and practical lessons and guest lectures. These will help you build your knowledge and understanding of your chosen specialism, while gaining the ability to research and present your ideas as reports and presentations.

Where can I go from here? By the end of the course you will be fully prepared to progress on to a range of FdSc or BSc (Hons) programmes to take the next step towards your career goals in the landbased industry.

If you are 19 or over you can cover the cost of tuition fees with an Advanced Learner Loan. Repayments don’t begin until you finish the course and are earning at least £25,725. What’s more, if you complete the Access to HE course and then go on to complete a degree you will have your Advanced Learner Loan written off.

ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION Missed out on taking your education to degree level? These one year courses prepare you to study at degree level if you do not currently have the qualifications to apply. They are specifically designed to give you the foundation skills and knowledge to go on and study a university degree. Successful students have gone on to study social work, dental hygiene, primary school teaching, midwifery and mental health nursing. The course can also open doors to areas of study such as veterinary medicine, history, criminology and law. We provide a supportive ‘family friendly’ environment with great ICT facilities. Lectures are delivered in small groups and you will have a personal tutor. We can also provide the opportunity for students to complete GCSE Maths and/or English alongside the Access programme (subject to interview).

ACCESS DIPLOMA SUBJECTS Creative Writing Humanities Nursing and Healthcare Science Social Sciences Social Work

Advanced learner loans are available to cover the cost of tuition – find out more inside or online.

ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION

STUDENT STORY “I heard really good reviews about Andover from friends who had studied there. The course only lasted one year, I could combine it with childcare and it was specialised to the subjects I wanted to study so it seemed perfect for me. The lecturers are so helpful and understanding, they explain the work in ways that actually make sense and will go over it again until you understand it. The Access course has helped me prepare for my future as I’d like to go to university to study midwifery and I’ve been taught how to structure my assignments, references and exams in the way I’ll need. All the lessons have been very informative and useful, the staff have been amazing, and I’ve had so much fun whilst learning at the same time. I’ll always remember the friends I made from my course. If you’re thinking of coming to Andover I’d definitely say go for it! I don’t think there’s another college out there that will give you the same experiences and opportunities.”

Stay near – go far! University level courses on your doorstep HNCs are a great way to start on the degree level route without having to commit to the full three or four years. They are undergraduate qualifications but take less time and were created to prepare you for specific careers.

What is an HNC? A Higher National Certificate (HNC) takes one year to complete and is the equivalent of the first year at university – a Level 4 qualification. HNCs are vocationally focused and can lead straight on to a career. They’re a great stepping stone up to a higher qualification, as you can choose to ‘top up’ to an HND or to a full bachelor’s degree. Many students find this a far more affordable option than attending university, with fees currently set at £4,800 a year.
