RURAL RETREATS COUNTRY LIFE
Cosy country pubs, great walks and green parks on our doorstep, beautiful mixes of red-brick and white-washed houses, and a tranquil pace of life. Our towns and villages are little pockets of utopia if you prefer your home life away from the bustle of the city.
HIT THE TOWN
Although it can be more of a stretch to buy property in the historic market town, Beverley, it is popular and could be a wise investment - head to Flemingate or the Minster area.
Grimsby’s dockside Kasbah district has become a conservation area and ‘a town within a town’. Grimsby has beautiful 19th century homes, delightful parks and properties on leafy, tree-lined avenues. For the sort of money that would get you a bedsit in London, check out properties near People’s Park.

What do you think attracts young people to Hull and the Humber?
Career opportunities in Hull are more available than many may think and can be as good as other major cities such as Manchester and Birmingham. The property sector, and the property in Hull compared to many other UK cities, is much more affordable, it is so much easier to get on the property ladder and invest here.

IN THE CITY
Hull is one of the UK’s best-kept secrets, with the marina known as the jewel in our crown. Hull’s offer is constantly evolving with new bars, restaurants and events popping up all over the city. And let’s not forget to mention that we were City of Culture in 2017.
OVERHEARD IN HULL
By day and night I only ever came across great little shops, a buzzing cultural life, friendly inns, handsome squares and streets full of energy.”

LEANOR LEETHA
Meet Eleanor Leetham, 22, Project Coordinator at The Edge Hub El is originally from Bradford, and now lives in Hull city centre.
Why were you attracted to the area?
I arrived at the University of Hull and immediately fell in love, the vibrancy, friendliness and uniqueness were like no other I had seen. I have never been anywhere that feels like home as much as Hull.
How have you found relocating here? I have always been met with kindness and friendly faces. It is the people that make Hull so special, and they have made it more welcoming than I ever could have imagined.
Why do you think this is a great place to study or launch your career?
Hull made everything feel possible while also having the comfort of home. It isn’t an overly large university; my lecturers knew my name and they frequently checked in on me. I’m now in a job that I love waking up to every morning and I work with some amazing people.
What would you say to other people considering relocating to the region? DO IT! Hull has a magnetic pull that makes you want to stay and it’s not something I ever regret. The best recommendation would be to take the leap. Hull is all about what you make of it.
Condé Nast Traveller named Humber Street and The Deep in the list of The 10 Most Beautiful Places in Yorkshire. The Humber Street, Fruit Market and Marina area in Hull have been dubbed the ‘Marbella of the North’.

CASE STUDY: LARA ROBERTS
Meet Lara Roberts, 30, owner of Plant and Paint, a houseplant, plantware and decorative paint store on Humber Street, Hull. Lara moved to Hull from Llangollen, North Wales, to study at the University of Hull, and has since set up home in East Yorkshire.
What are your top things to do on a day out?
Hitting the amazing indie shops, in the Fruit Market, Paragon Arcade and Hepworth Arcade. I enjoy meeting up with friends after work in one of the many great pubs in the city, where you can still manage to find a pint for less than £4!
What are your favourite things about Hull?
The number of trendy independent and eco-conscious businesses, all projects of passion. It’s also a great place to start a business, I had incredible business support in the form of grants and initiatives.
Where do you go for your retail fix?
My favourite shop is Form in the Fruit Market, it’s a colour explosion featuring loads of beautiful prints, cards and stationery. In Paragon Arcade I love browsing the homewares in Homestead Store and Beasley’s, Hepworth Arcade has clothing that is just so fun and different.
What is the best event you have been to here?
Good Things seasonal markets, where indies travel from all over the country to trade alongside Hull’s finest. It creates such a brilliant vibe down Humber Street!

PRIDE: IN HULL
Pride in Hull, led by the LGBTQ+ community and supported by numerous local businesses, is open to all and was named the inaugural UK Pride in 2017.
Pride in Hull is the largest free-to-enter Pride festival in the UK and the second-largest event in the city’s festival calendar – and the run-up sees the city strewn with rainbows.
The Humber is a fun, vibrant region that draws a lot of people from a lot of different places. We are a region of inclusivity and empowerment, always fostering positive change and diversity. Our city centre is welcoming, people can be open about their sexual orientation and gender identity.
GUEST BLOGGER MATT W ALTON
Hull’s first and only gay and inclusive rugby team, the Hull Roundheads
RUFC was founded in 2018. People of any gender, sexuality or race can come together for the love of the sport.
Be pRoUd
There are countless social groups, LGBTQ+; book group, theatre group and sports clubs. That’s ultimately the greatest thing about Hull, the people are willing to give anything a try.”
Matt Walton
VEN-YOU!
Hull is spoiled for dedicated LGBTQ+ venues too, here are Matt’s bill-toppers:
1. The Star
Hear from Guest Blogger, Matt Walton, Development Manager, Absolutely Cultured at Humber Street Gallery.
Back in 2017 (yes, we’re still talking about City of Culture), Hull hosted LGBT50, a ten-day festival of LGBT history and culture to mark the 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality, culminating in a massive concert broadcast live on the BBC.
Nightlife in the city centre is diverse with a great mix of bars and restaurants with plenty of LGBTQ+ friendly places. My favourite places are Furley & Co. for drinks, The Brain Jar for the best pizzas, and Atom for locally-brewed beers. Ponto Lounge s brilliant for a ‘Drag Brunch’.
You won’t struggle to get your cultural fix with plenty of museums, galleries, theatres, and live venues. Whether it’s a play at Hull Truck Theatre or one of the stars of RuPaul’s Drag race at the Bonus Arena, there’s always a great night out to be had.
THE queer hotspot in the city, offering drag DJ nights, karaoke and 70s & 80s nights.

Meet Morgen, graduate of the University of Hull and Sales Associate - CMF and Neurosurgical at Stryker, one of the world’s leading medical technology companies. He tells us about relocating to Hull from Berkshire, and how the move has helped him get on the property ladder.
“I’ll be honest, I did have preconceptions about Hull. Few were positive, but all the negatives turned out to be wrong.
“The University of Hull made me feel so welcome, and the city is very welcoming too. I love Hull’s culture. People are friendly, the city is well looked after, and lots of quirky things happen here.
Hull’s close to lots of beautiful countryside, not far from cities like York and Leeds, and the area is cheap to live in. I’m currently buying my first house!”
“Career opportunities are excellent too, particularly in the sciences with Reckitt, Ineos and Smith & Nephew all based here. And you’ll find lots of like-minded young people starting their careers. Groups like the Young Talent Network and Hull Young Socials can make such a difference to how much value you get from living here. I run a group on the Meetup app for people in their 20-30s who want to make new friends in the city, and it’s proving very popular!
“So if you’re thinking of relocating this way for work or university, I say go for it!”

CASE STUDY ABBIE B IELBY
Meet Abbie Bielby, 28, a Solicitor at Rollits LLP. Abbie originally lived on the north bank of the Humber in Beverley, East Yorkshire, and relocated to the south bank, to Barton, North Lincolnshire.
ABBIE’S TOP FIVE THINGS TO DO IN AND AROUND BARTON
1. Meet up with friends at The Ropewalk, in Barton – the café offers cooking classes, cinema nights and more!
3. The Hope and Anchor in South Ferriby is perfect for a Sunday Lunch, with great views.
Why did you relocate to the area?
Barton is a small town, it is quaint and has a village feel, whilst being only a short commute to and from work.
Why do you think the Humber is a great place to start your career?
Whilst offering a slower pace of living than larger cities, the region provides the perfect balance many young people look for when choosing a place to study and work.
What do you think attracts young people to the Humber?
It’s really ‘up and coming’, with both well-established businesses and start-ups alike, providing lots of opportunities. Hull has the benefit of being a university city, so it has all the amenities young people look for, balanced alongside a genuine community feel.
What would you say to other people considering relocating to the region?
The region has lots of great networking groups that young people can get involved with and meet like minded people. My top tip would be to take every opportunity and get involved!
3. Chao Baan is a Thai restaurant in Barton, the food is excellent. You can eat in or take away.
4. A great weekend beach walk is the Humberston Fitties (and very dog friendly). And if you fancy something more active – there is paddle boarding in Cleethorpes.
5. The Minerva, Hull is perfect for afterwork drinks and a catch up. A fantastic city centre location, right by the river.
The Humber region provides a contrast between city life, the coast and countryside. For me the balance of these three elements makes this region a great place to live and work.”

CASE STUDY HARRY CROCKER
Meet Harry Crocker, 26, Process Engineer - Strategy and Decarbonisation, at Phillips 66. Harry is originally from Portsmouth, studied at the University of Manchester, and relocated to Barton, North Lincolnshire, in January 2021.
Why did you relocate to the area?
I relocated after being offered a job at the Humber Refinery. The area has so much to offer. Barton is fantastically positioned next to the city of Hull and not far from Cleethorpes and the beaches.
How have you found relocating here?
It has been easy. The company offered me a great graduation relocation plan, which included giving me initially free accommodation and time to realise where I wanted to live, and I have recently bought my first house.
What are your top three things to do on a day or night out?
I love playing five-a-side football for Phillips 66. There are so many great local pubs. I also had my first go at paddle boarding in Cleethorpes which was great.
What do you think attracts young people to the region?
The many amazing graduate/apprenticeship and STEM roles due to cluster of industry. The pay also helps!
What would you say to other people considering relocating to the region?
Life is too short - you must grab any opportunities. I would advise everyone to get involved with groups and social activities both in and out of work as it will help to build up your social circle.

Relocating here has been the best decision I’ve ever made, and it’s felt like home since the very first day I moved here. People are so friendly and welcoming.
