Sheffield has long been recognised as one of Britain’s premier locations for business. In the 18th and 19th centuries the iron and steel industries put the city on the map.

Sheffield is an important location in the UK’s internet infrastructure, with all major providers routing a significant amount of traffic via the city.
– The number of people employed in this sector grew by 38% in Sheffield between 1998 and 2008, compared with an average of 8% in England.
The city also has wide availability of ‘superfast broadband’ for both domestic and commercial users. BT, the UK’s largest telecommunications provider, has implemented their 21st Century Network (21CN) next generation project in Sheffield ahead of many other areas of the UK. Virgin Media also provide coverage to the majority of the city (including residential areas) and are offering their fastest available products including cable connectivity and fibre lease lines. In addition to BT and Virgin Media, The city is also part of Digital Region - the first major regional deployment of ‘Superfast Broadband’ in the UK. This ambitious project will deliver a next generation communications service to more than half a million premises and forty thousand businesses in the region on an infrastructure capable of delivering a minimum of 20-25Mbps symmetrical broadband speeds using state of the art technology.
With a 3-year initial build plan, the project will create a high speed, highly reliable Next Generation broadband network that will offer high quality internet services to at least 80% of residents and businesses in the region by 2012. Digital Region provides Sheffield with the opportunity to position itself within a global marketplace, giving service providers a unique opportunity to provide a next generation broadband infrastructure that will closely be watched by global players in the communications sector and beyond. The network is available to many businesses in Sheffield now, allowing them to take advantage of many applications such as Voiceover-Internet-Protocol (VoIP), Web-based Video Conferencing, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and managed back-up and storage, whilst also experiencing significantly faster download and upload speeds. The network is also one of only three organisations in the UK to have Public Sector Network (PSN) accreditation which means it is eligible to support public sector traffic over the network.
