THE PROGRAMME CONSISTS OF FOUR STAGES:

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A TRUSTEE?

INTERACTIVE WORKSHOPS

FINDING THE RIGHT ROLE

By volunteering as a trustee or non-exec board member, your employee will be utilising their skills and experience to improve the performance of the charity and provide the strategic guidance and support needed to achieve their aims.

Making important decisions on how the charity operates is a fundamental responsibility of being a trustee and these decisions will have a great impact on both the charity and the community it serves.

Prospective trustees will receive expert training, advice, support and encouragement, essential for ensuring they know what the expectations are, what boards offer their ‘best fit’ and what personal rewards they can expect in return.

Working with Trustees Unlimited, the prospective trustee will benefit from face-to-face meetings that will identify their areas of interest, strengths and experience, as well as getting advice on how to structure an effective application and what to expect in the process.

Matching the right individual to the right role is imperative to the success of the trustee/charity relationship, so professional support and guidance will be provided throughout the selection process.

Those with existing positions will receive specialised governance training to help them personally get the most of their trusteeship and maximise the impact their boards create.

ONGOING SUPPORT AND DEVELOPMENT

IMPACT ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION

Once the trustee position has been secured, the individual will receive ongoing training and mentoring and will have the opportunity to discuss any challenges they may have.

At a specified point after completion of the project an assessment will be made on three levels. How has it affected:

a) Trustee induction for newly appointed trustees and refresher training Drawing on NCVO’s cutting-edge thinking that has been developed from our governance work with a range of charities over many years, this course aims to help trustees make an effective contribution to the governance of their organisation.

• your organisation – has it met the strategic aims set at the beginning of the project?

• your employees – has it added to their professional development?

• the voluntary sector – has the sector benefited from the skills and experience of your employees?

b) Advanced development – delivering maximum impact This advanced course considers bestpractice examples of voluntary sector trusteeship, including approaches to governance reviews such as NCVO’s Governance Wheel, skills audits, board recruitment and retention, succession planning, and the working relationship between the trustees and the executive.
