Welcome to saltash.net H

AVING celebrated its 50th birthday in 2015, saltash.net is now looking to the future, ensuring the school continues to provide the best guidance and opportunities it can for its students. Since January 2014, the school has been part of SMART (Saltash Multi Academy Regional Trust) with one of its partner primary schools, continuing to work very closely with the Saltash Association of Schools to ensure that the best possible secondary school transition arrangements are in place. Following on from saltash.net staff member, Scott Wieprecht, winning a National Teaching Award for innovative use of new technologies in 2014, 2016 has seen maths teacher Alan Hawthorne also nominated for his outstanding use of technology. Judges visited the school at the end of April, observing Mr Hawthorne teaching his A Level class, before speaking to staff and students. This nomination further strengthens the reputation that saltash.net has for ICT excellence, remaining innovative and confident with current technologies. The results will be announced this month. In January, saltash.net received a 3D printer, kindly donated by the Cornwall Manufacturers’ Group. This has helped to further improve the Engineering and Design and

Technology provision at the school, ensuring that the school has the latest cutting edge technology needed to help students thrive. saltash.net celebrated World Book Day 2016 in March by transforming into hogash.net, with a Harry Potter theme. Powered by the impassioned efforts of English teacher and literacy coordinator, Jono Stirrup, staff and students got into the Hogwarts spirit, dressing in fabulous costumes and giving lessons a magical twist. The purpose of the day wasn’t simply magical – students were also encouraged to donate to ‘Books to Africa’, an organisation providing educational aid to areas of Africa in severe need. Students at saltash.net are encouraged to develop rounded social lives, and participate in a number of extra-curricular activities organised by the school. Two teams of students completed the Ten Tors Challenge in May, and Year 9 student Jack Phelan was recognised for his work in the community at this year’s Saltash May Fair. saltash.net works with local primary schools so that the transition between primary and secondary is as easy as possible, with students already comfortable in preparation for the fresh and exciting challenges that await them.

HE opening of Plymouth Studio School’s new £4.2 million building and High Performance Sports Centre onsite this autumn at the University of St Mark & St John could be your next move if you’re looking for sporting and academic excellence in one place. Open to Year 10s and Year 12s, the state-funded school offers great opportunities if you’re looking for a career in sport, or if you want to combine traditional GCSE and A-Level qualifications with your own sporting ambitions. Plymouth Diving and Team GB champions, Matt Dixon and Cody Powell-Tuckett, will be among the new intake of students this September, joining other young athletes competing at national and international level and as part of Team GB squads. Matt Lennon, principal of Plymouth Studio School, explains: “People seem to think it’s an either or situation – a career in sport or academic excellence. But that’s not the case here. We have students who are competing in their sport at county, national and international level but still taking up to 10 GCSEs, studying for their EBAC or for 4 A-Levels. “They might want to pursue a career in sport, but equally they might want to go on to be a doctor, stockbroker, lawyer or teacher.” Small class sizes, an individual approach to learning and flexible timetables, which can accommodate additional sports training and competition schedules, all help students to recognise and fulfil their true potential. For those with their eyes firmly on a career in sport, education routes include Sports Performance, Sports Development & Coach-

PLAISTOW Hill Infant and Nursery School is a well-established school in St Budeaux for children aged three to seven years. The school was pronounced “good” by Ofsted in March 2013, stating that the teaching was good and children throughout the school make good progress in their learning. The school has high expectations, pupils behave well, relationships are positive and lessons are interesting and motivating. The school welcomes children into the nursery in the term after their third birthday. The normal daily provision is enhanced by the availability of breakfast club and Plaistation, the after-school care facility. UTC Plymouth can prepare you for your future career

HROUGHOUT the country there is an ever-increasing demand for highly skilled, work-ready employees. A report conducted by EngineeringUK highlights the need to double the number of annual recruits into engineering by 2020 to meet expected demand. This is why the work the team is doing at UTC Plymouth and many other UTCs across the country is so vital to the sector. UTC Plymouth is a science and engineering specialist college for 14- to

19-year-olds, which has the aim to educate and train the most technically-minded students in the region so they can progress into higher education or head straight into employment. With the first set of students leaving last summer, after UTC Plymouth opened its doors in 2013, it celebrated an overall progression rate of 96 per cent. That means only four per cent of the year group didn’t either enter higher education, employment or secure an apprenticeship. Just like other schools, UTC Plymouth

teaches traditional core subjects; however, what makes it different is it places a greater emphasis on STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), offering a practical education alongside a classroom one. Students can choose from a number of pathways including GCSEs, A Levels, and BTEC’s, in addition to a wide range of extra-curricular activities. With links to some of the region’s biggest employers, Royal Navy affiliation and a partnership with Plymouth Uni-

versity, UTC Plymouth is able to put you onto the next path in your career.
