Imagination in the

Exetreme A stellar line-up of top children’s authors will be heading to the city as part of Exeter’s festival of writing for and by young people during the October half term. Michael Morpurgo, Andy Stanton, and Francesca Simon will be among the wellknown names taking part in this year’s Exetreme Imagination festival. The packed programme of events, running from Saturday, October 25, to Saturday, November 1, includes author events, creative workshops, exhibitions and performances at venues across the city. Andy Stanton, award-winning author of the Mr Gum series, will be sharing stories, jokes and true-life tales about being a writer. Devon-based Babette Cole, author of more than 70 books, including Princess

Smartypants, Mommy Laid an Egg, and Bad Habits, will be talking about how she creates her characters, as well as reading stories and anecdotes. A theme of conflict runs through the festival, with some events linked to the First World War. Tom Palmer’s latest book Over the Line is about one footballer’s experience of the First World War. During an event at Exeter library, Tom will be playing his popular Football Reading Game with a group of young people. Michael Morpurgo will be giving a talk at Exeter Northcott Theatre, following a performance of An Elephant in the Garden, the new adaptation of his best-selling children’s novel set during the Second World War.

On Wednesday, October 29, there will be a particular focus on teens, with the Exetreme Teen Day. Festival curator and Devon-based author Mal Peet said: “Exetreme Imagination is a city-wide, multi-media, interactive festival for children of all ages. “It is more than just another literary event; it aims to inspire young people to let their imaginations go wild, with fantastic opportunities to watch and participate in performances, visit exhibitions and take part in workshops about writing and illustrating. What better way to spend the half term holiday?” For a full programme of events visit www.exetreme.org 13

On Saturday, November 15, Harry’s Ball, a glamourous glittering affair complete with a throng of celebrity guests, is taking place at Sandy Park in aid of the Harry Cunningham Trust. The charity raises awareness of pre-birth complication vasa previa, and has in two years raised a stunning £25,000 to support the work of a variety of neonatal and bereavement causes. Harry’s mum, charity founder Niki Cunningham, tells Fran McElhone the story

Harry’s

legacy

L

ives have been saved by the Harry Cunningham Trust, a charity with an ever spreading message founded by Budleigh Salterton mum of three Niki Cunningham. From its roots in East Devon, there are now branches across the country. The story behind the trust has touched so many hearts; £25,000 has been raised in two years and distributed in different directions, including the neonatal unit at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital, to bereavement groups, and to further the work Niki and her sea of helpers have taken on themselves. The inspiration for the charity is Harry, Niki’s second baby, who died aged 26 hours in June 2012. Because of complications during Harry’s birth, caused by the undiagnosed vasa previa, in which fetal blood vessels from the placenta or umbilical cord cross the entrance to the birth canal beneath the baby, Harry was starved of oxygen for 30 minutes, causing him considerable brain damage. Niki and her husband Jamie were inspired to set up the charity as a way of thanking the staff at the hospital for the exceptional care they gave their son. Within a few weeks of the charity’s inception, which included a balloon launch from the Maer in Exmouth, £2,000 had been raised. There are three strands to the charity; fundraising, supporting bereaved families, and raising awareness of the condition which is not routinely screened for. But it takes just moments to conduct and expectant mums can request it at their 20-week scan. Last year, following national media coverage of her charity campaign, the 32-year-old was contacted by a representative from the Department for Health and subsequently invited to London to be part of a review by the National Screening Committee. Niki’s voice was heard alongside representatives from a host of highprofile health bodies including the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the Royal College of Midwives.

Ultimately, Niki hopes screening for vasa previa will become routine. I have been following the charity’s evolution ever since I first met Niki, at the Maer on the sunny afternoon of the trust’s official launch, when I first learnt about vasa previa and Niki’s hopes for her initiative, which was to become a charity within the year. I am as much in awe of her strength and resolve to create something good out of such a deep personal tragedy, now, as I was then. “When Harry died, instead of having flowers at the funeral we received a lot of money, which we wanted to donate to the neonatal ward at the hospital because we felt we’d been given such good care and wanted to give something back,” she tells me. “But we were so overwhelmed by people’s generosity that we thought we could do far more with it, and thought: Wouldn’t it be great to help more families who have been bereaved by the loss of a baby?

When I had the scan with Florence, I burst into tears afterwards because 30 seconds was all it took “We’d just been through the darkest time and felt that there wasn’t the greatest amount of support out there. “We were amazed that in the first six months we raised £6,000. A lot of people are touched by Harry’s story.” Niki’s tireless efforts with the trust had a short pause last year while she had her third child Florence. “I’ve absolutely thrown myself into it,” she laughs. “It’s been my saving grace too, having that focus, to organise the next event or some fundraising or visiting bereaved parents. I’ve started to realise what we’ve done and I’m so proud of that. We’re saving lives now.” Raising awareness of the condition and encouraging other women to ask for the screening at their 20 scans, which takes just 30 seconds, has been as important as raising funds. If it were routine, the lives of around 500 babies could be saved. “The obstetrician at the RD&E said they’re always being asked to screen for vasa previa now,” she continues. “I’ve been contacted by three parents who say that they asked for the scan and they were found to have it, and then went on to have healthy babies. This was so touching and so amazing; it makes it all worthwhile. “When I had the scan with Florence, I burst into tears afterwards because 30 seconds was all it took. I just thought: If I had the scan with Harry, he would still be here today. But you can’t look back.” Over the past two years, the trust has attracted volunteers countrywide who are earnestly spreading the message and furthering Niki’s work, and who take on a variety of tasks including approaching national companies for prizes for charity events. The trust for a while has been providing packages for the bereavement suites of some hospitals, including knitted toys crafted by the volunteers, two blankets – one for the baby and one as a keepsake – and soon little Moses baskets to replace the currently used bread baskets. As part of her work with the charity Niki, who’s training to become a bereavement counsellor, has been offering support to other bereaved parents, and when she becomes fully qualified next year plans to extend this service. Up until now, funds generated have been put primarily back into the neonatal unit as well as funding the monthly meetings for the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society support group in Exeter which Niki also supports in person. Next year Niki wants to host awareness raising events in cities around the country, reaching out to even more expectant mums further afield. A series of books to help siblings understand the loss of a baby to their family is also planned. And Niki’s blog may also be turned into a book. As well as being shortlisted for author/blogger of the year at the 2014 Butterfly Awards, the charity is also up for the UK support agency award. Meanwhile, Niki has been shortlisted for the inspirational woman award at the 2014 Venus Awards Devon. And after the Harry Cunningham Ball this autumn, fundraising will continue on a national scale. Within four weeks, a third of the 500 tickets for the star-studded event were sold. The glamorous occasion will build on the success of the first event, at the Royal Beacon Hotel in Exmouth and which 16

raised £3,000 on the night, and the second event at Sandy Park last year. Celebrity appearances will include Coronation Street and HearSay band member actress Kym Marsh, who has been bereaved by the loss of her baby, the casts of Made in Chelsea and The Only Way is Essex, and Hollyoaks actor and Strictly Come Dancing contestant Ashley Taylor Dawson. Live acts on the night could include X Factor contestants Luke Friend and Rough Copy, and Britain’s Got Talent contestants Twist & Pulse. “We’re really excited,” continues Niki. “We think there’s something for everyone. It’s quite rare for such big names to come to Exeter, so we’re happy to give people a fun evening while raising awareness of the charity and doing some fundraising at the same time. “With the first ball, we wanted to have a bit of a party, to celebrate Harry instead of being down all the time. It really boosted awareness, so the next year I looked for a bigger venue, but because I’d only had Florence a few months before, it wasn’t as big as it could have been. This year we wanted to make it as big as we could. “Sometimes I can’t believe all that has happened, but it’s when I hear from the parents whose babies have been saved because of our work, and the lives we’ve helped that I just feel so proud, and think how wonderful it is that Harry’s legacy is living on and that he has helped save lives.” Ball tickets, which include a three-course meal and entertainment, are £70. VIP tickets are £85 which includes a drinks reception and meet and greet with the celebrities. Alternatively, Celebrity Experience tickets are £115 which include the chance to sit on a table with the celebrities. For more details visit www.harrycunninghamtrust.co.uk

what you should

know about:

s y o b m a e r D The

If you want to know how revealing a Dreamboys show gets, you’ll have to buy a ticket to find out. After a massive, sold-out UK tour last year, The Dreamboys are back with a brand new show called Fit And Famous, which will stop off at Exeter Corn Exchange on Wednesday, October 22. Former Dreamboy David Richards, now director of the famous stripper brand, reveals a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes to Anita Merritt, and promises that once you’ve seen a Dreamboys show you’ll be a fan for life What are people’s perceptions of the Dreamboys? Before people come to a show they think it’s just a bunch of guys who come on stage, take their clothes off and then walk off. It’s nothing like that. What can people expect to see at a Dreamboys show? The show is extremely classy and very entertaining. It’s a proper theatre production with massive staging, fantastic lighting and incredible costumes. The guys are enormously talented and have amazing personalities, as well amazing bodies. When they come on stage they do massive back flips and somersaults. There are routines such as one with fire sticks, and one Dreamboy does pole dancing. The show

is also lots of fun, with comedy parts and acting as well. Do the Dreamboys bare all in the show? If you want to know you’ll have to come and see! Let’s just say they don’t leave a lot to the imagination. What happens backstage before a show? It’s all about the beauty regime. They are massive hygiene freaks. All the Dreamboys have got OCD! They

live quite a feminine life; the moisturiser comes out, along with the make-up and hair straighteners. How do you choose who has got what it takes to become a Dreamboy? Auditions are held every January. They have an X Factor style about them, although our auditions have been going longer than the TV show! First of all they send in a picture with a bit about themselves, and if they are selected they come to the audition and have to learn a dance routine with a

The Dreamboys are coming to Exeter Corn Exchange. Below left, David Richards (right)

choreographer and are then watched by a panel of four judges. In the next round they have to do a solo performance and the next round is an interview. It’s very rare we find more than one Dreamboy by the end. We are really picky. How do you mould someone into a Dreamboy? They have to go through four months of intensive rehearsals and we work on their physique, styling and grooming regime. It’s almost like a factory conveyor belt; They come in looking one way and come out completely different. They have a waxed chest, pruned eyebrows and orange skin. The idea is to see something you wouldn’t get at home. That’s why they’re called Dreamboys.

What physical features do you look for in a Dreamboy? We make sure there’s something for everyone because we don’t expect people to turn up and love every single guy in the show. What you won’t find is your normal, average, everyday man because otherwise what’s the point of coming to the show? There’s nothing wrong with being your average looking man – that’s what I have become! Who is among your latest recruits? It took months and months of planning, but we’ve got Dan Osborne from The Only Way is Essex. He’s doing about eight shows, but unfortunately one of those isn’t Exeter because of his filming schedule.

EX October 14 Dreamboys.indd 2

What rules do the Dreamboys have to adhere to? Their job is to make every single person who comes to watch the Dreamboys feel like a princess. The boys have contracts which stipulate certain things. There’s all sorts of stuff from their decorum with customers to keeping up their training regime and how they look. Fortunately the boys do that, as they care about their appearance and the health benefits of it. They are not allowed to be with audience members whether it’s after the show, two or three weeks after the show, or even three or four years after the show. The boys’ job is to entertain the audience live on stage, and not in other ways. It’s a no-no. They are more into people who are reserved 19

Former Dreamboy David Richards

They have the bad reputation that they love themselves. People say they’re the nicest bunch of guys they’ve ever met and appreciate them as people rather than just what they do for a job. Some of them have partners but another rule is we don’t allow girlfriends or wives to come to the shows. The only exception is if they meet someone and they want to put their mind at ease. What was it like being one of the Dreamboys troupe? I first joined when I was 18. I was contacted by them to audition after being spotted on a TV show, and thought it would be fun so I went along and got in. I remember having fun but I’ve always, always been business driven from an early age so in time I was made manager of the whole troupe and then I bought the entire company in 2010. How has Dreamboys changed since you took over the brand? When I was a Dreamboy we didn’t have any of our own clubs. It was just a touring show. We’ve now got 12 clubs across the country with shows every Saturday night. I have also turned Dreamboys into a massive theatre and arena tour. The first was a 22-date tour and by the next year it was 60 dates. Next year we’ll be doing 80 shows and now Europe is knocking on the door. A Dutch television company has started start filming the Dreamboys for a massive TV documentary on the entire operation. It shows our guys at home, the gym, their beauty regime and everyday lives, as well as at show rehearsals. They will also be interviewing groups of girls to find out why they come to the show. Are there any downsides to being a Dreamboy? They have the bad reputation that they love themselves. That’s really not fair. When people meet them they say they’re the nicest bunch of guys they’ve ever met. If someone was fat or obese you wouldn’t go up to them and say it. So if someone has

a great body, why is it okay for someone to say, ‘You love yourself ’? Behind the scenes do the Dreamboys all get on well together? They’re like a massive family, a bit like brothers. There is an amount of ego and testosterone in the air, but they get on extremely well. They have so much fun and it’s hilarious being on the tour bus with them. How wild do the women get in the audience? When women come to a strip show they literally want to be part of the entire thing. That’s why we have three security men whose job it is to hold them back. When women get the chance to meet the boys at the end of the show, some will grab them, grope them or jump all over them. You would never see a man doing that, and he wouldn’t get away with it. Their mission is to get their hands on them,

EXEXOctober October1414 Dreamboys.indd 3

get their telephone number, and see if they will come home with them. None of those things are going to happen! What age do Dreamboys ‘retire’? When you leave all depends on how you age really. It’s not a job you do for the rest of your life, but it can be for many, many years. In that time you can earn some good money and have an amazing experience. Why should people come to the Dreamboys show? If you think it’s not your cup of tea I guarantee that if you come you will be a Dreamboy fan for life because you will have the time of your life. For two hours you can relax in a safe environment and enjoy seeing something you wouldn’t normally see in everyday life. Tickets for the show, starting at 7.45pm, cost £24.50. Frights

...camera, action!

Yet-to-be-revealed top film stars are due to head to the historic and charming Seaton Tramway next year ready for the cameras to start rolling for an action film set on Halloween. Fran McElhone met film maker Pete Sheppard, who took inspiration for the film from the attraction’s annual Halloween and Electric Shock ‘O Horror Zombie Fest events Pictures: Matt Austin

P

ete’s phone rings. “If you could deliver the body parts here that would be fantastic,” he says to Duane, his right hand man, on the other end. He looks at me and laughs. His phone rings again a bit later. “Did you pack the lungs, liver and guts up? Oh you’re going shopping later are you?” He bursts into laughter again and winks. Only on a film set for a movie being set on Halloween is this conversation OK. When I arrive at Seaton Tramway depot there is a bloodied apron, just in case props are needed for the photo shoot in an hour. And when our photographer arrives, I miss the extras getting the fake blood poured over their hands and ask, aghast, what on earth happened. Owner of film production company Fusion Waterside Studios, film director, producer and film maker Pete has been supplying specialist film and theatrical make-up artistry students to stage Seaton Tramway’s Halloween and Electric Shock ‘O Horror Zombie Fest 22

events, from the universities and colleges he guest lectures at back home in Hertfordshire, for around seven years. Last year he invited Exeter College students to be involved and this year, more local people than ever are part of it, including actors and crew. From these events, and being completely besotted with the tramway, the 50-year-old father of three spawned the idea for a film, working title Tram of Terror, 70 per cent of which will be filmed at the tramway and surrounding area next spring ready to hit the big screen – Scott Cinemas has agreed to take it on – in October 2016. As for the lead roles, Pete will not be drawn. I just couldn’t tease it out of him. I tried everything, including non-direct questions which I thought may have tricked him into saying just enough. I did go in with one direct question. “Is it Jonny Depp?” No answer. So I ask him just how big a star they are. Brad Pitt big? We will know them, he assures. They? So there’s more than one superstar coming to Seaton? His phone rings again... Pete looks and sounds like a film director; you know, he has that cool facade of someone in the biz. His wrap-around, yellow-tinted sunnies don’t leave his face the whole morning. The first time I met him at the beginning of summer, when he received round one of grilling about his lead cast, he had them on – his signature accessory. But he’s very laid back and has time for everyone, and everyone at the tramway has time for him. The film will have a cast of around 70, including 20 main characters, plus extras. And a 50-strong crew. “While working with the tramway I thought what a brilliant resource it is - there’s got to be a movie in here somewhere,” he says. “And there’s a lot of talent in the area. “I thought I could really do something with the setting and I came up with an idea for an action film, with a gang who use Halloween as a cover. “On Halloween you can walk down the streets with a mask on and no one bats an eyelid because it’s Halloween,” he smiles. “If you hear screaming, you think, oh well, it’s Halloween.” When we arrive back from our delightful ride up to Colyton, where the green room is located, on the most charming of trams one sunny late summer morning, Duane appears from behind a tram ready for our photo shoot. “All good?” Pete asks. “Yeah, just got a bit of blood to clear up, it looks like someone’s been slaughtered over there,” Duane replies. “That’s not a bad thing,” retorts Pete, smirking, who tells me that for photo shoots sometimes offal is used for the best effects… though this does present one of the hazards of the job. “There was one time when we’d had this bag of offal for a shoot, and I was going to take it back for my dogs, so as not to waste it,” he recalls. “But it had been out under the heat of the lights all day. We got in the car and it started ponging so badly we were all gagging. We had to stop and get rid of it. I turned up at home absolutely stinking. My wife frog-marched me into the shower with the dogs at my ankles.” Luckily, for Pete anyway, the film is less gore, more action. “We did a test film last Halloween and realised it was going to work,” he continues. “I had word with a few industry partners, who came down, loved it, and thought it was a goer. “So I got in touch with a scriptwriter and she came down here for a week – the script is on its third re-write now as I wanted there to be

more suspense – and it all took off.” Casting starts at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London in January. Then there will be castings in East Devon for local budding actors and actresses to get involved. Filming starts in April and is set to last two months. The crew has done recces at the other locations, but these are hush-hush for now. Stunt scenes will take place at Pete’s Hertfordshire studio, including a burning boat sequence, recreating the Axe Estuary on flooded fields within the grounds. Pete’s hoping local firefighters will be able to assist with some of the pyrotechnic scenes in and around Seaton. Pete explains how the introduction of high definition technology has changed the film and television programme making process, with cameras picking up every little bit of tape on the floor boards, putting pressure on makers to up the quality of their work and make-up artists to remain sharp. Most films, he explains, use computer generated imagery. Tram of Terror will use only 2.3 per cent CGI - a testament to its quality and skill of the crew. “There’s nothing better than really effective make-up,” he says. “We’re doing it the old school way, which is not only better, but more fun! And it adds to the effect on the actors, for whom it is more realistic.” Around 15 years ago, not being a make-up artist himself but knowing exactly the high expectations on set, Pete became involved in the development of theatrical specialist make-up modules for make-up artistry students to create visual evidence portfolios and on-set experience. This holistic approach has proved key to the successes of many of those who have gone on to get a foot in the ever-stiff door of the film world. Pete’s students have gone on to work on an impressive catalogue of shows including EastEnders, Casualty and the Harry Potter movies. The Halloween nights were born out of Pete’s aim to get the students experience helping stage a professional public event. During their two-week residential in East Devon, the students utilise the enigmatic and dramatic backdrop of the Jurassic Coast World

Heritage Site to create a portfolio. Several days will be dedicated to the Halloween events. “It went from a small-scale event at the café with students tapping on the windows to scare the passengers as the trams arrive, to what it is now,” Pete tells me. When the passengers - or willing victims - board at Seaton, a story teller starts the tale about the man who makes pies out of humans. And when they arrive at the depot, which will be pitch black, they won’t be alone. Pete leads me past the reception and into the engineering room and then into the next room which houses the ‘perfect surgical table’. “Everyone’s potential ingredients!” Pete laughs. What happens at Colyford, I ask? “Can’t tell you!” Pete laughs again. Expect plenty of surprises and to jump out of your skin. It doesn’t sound like it’s for the faint-hearted, though definitely an event for the fun-loving and thrill-seeking. “People who come want to be scared,” says Pete. “If they’re not scared they’ll want their money back!” Pete’s in the middle of shooting a TV ad for the tramway, due to air on ITV West next summer. The over shoot will be made into a promo video for the tramway to use. Pete, who hails from London, found Seaton Tramway via his love of the Jurassic coastline. “You’ve got the dramatic cliffs, which change every few miles, the wetlands, the hills, the woods; the landscape changes within such a short distance. As a photographer, film maker, or anyone creative, you don’t have to go very far for a varied backdrop. “The resources here are amazing; other film companies would be building their own trams for millions. And heritage attractions like this are few and far between and we want to do what we can to support them. “Oh look,” Pete says suddenly glances to his right. “The bag of offal’s turned up for the photo shoot!” And right on cue, Pete bursts into laughter again.

ringing out the inner caveman in everyone is the mission of this year’s fun-themed Powderham Food Festival. There will be opportunities to watch cooking over traditional fire pits, barbecues, and woodfired ovens, as well as seeing chefs at work in four exciting cooking demonstration areas. The one-day festival will descend upon the beautiful surroundings of Powderham Castle in Kenton on Saturday, October 4, from 10am to 5pm. To reflect the autumn season, visitors can look forward to an outdoor cooking feast of succulent barbecued meat, hot chestnuts, slow-cooked pulled pork, roasted pumpkins, fish baked on corn husks, clams scattered onto hot coals, sizzling mussels and ravishing ribs. It can all be found in the main marquee – the Theatre of Fire and Smoke – and home of fire pits, smokers, a wood-fired oven, Kamado barbecue, and even a smoking wheelbarrow. An amazing line-up of open fire experts will be performing great culinary acts where simple ingredients will be transformed into meaty masterpieces, vibrant vegetables and flaming fish. In total there will be more than 100 producers exhibiting in the castle and grounds, offering fascinating demonstrations, talks and tastings. The line-up of chefs include MasterChef winner chef Mat Follas who regularly runs courses on foraging and wild plants which he turns into delicious recipes. Food geek, Guardian writer and broadcaster and author Tim Hayward will bring wit, wisdom and fiery expertise to Powderham by using a charcoal- and seaweed-filled wheelbarrow as his favoured cooking medium. Joining him in the line-up is Devon Chef of the Year Ben Bulger who works at the Magdalen Chapter Hotel in Exeter. Before joining them, Ben was head chef at Riverford Field Kitchen in Buckfastleigh, where he worked alongside Jane Baxter, former head chef at Riverford Field Kitchen, who is also appearing at the festival. The chef and food writer set up the acclaimed Riverford Field Kitchen and her latest book, co-written with Henry Dimbleby, is Leon: Fast Vegetarian. Other names to watch out for at the festival include Peter Greig, of Pipers Farm in Cullompton; Zimbabwean-born chef, Kumbirai (Kumbi) Gundidza, who is now living in Dawlish and has just launched a range of delicious sauces largely influenced

by his African childhood; and Patrick Fogarty, owner of Bronx Grill and Bar in Teignmouth. In a designated area of the food festival can be found the Royal Marines from Commando Training Centre Royal Marines (CTCRM) based at Lympstone. Currently the subject of a TV series, they will be bringing their Cooks Field Tent and Cook Van. The Marines chefs are unlike any other in the world because they are required to

EX October 14 26/09/2014 11:42:13

cook anytime and anywhere in the world, from the heat in Afghanistan to the cold of Norway. It is their job to be creative with limited rations and equipment, while ensuring the Marines get the nutritional content necessary to keep them going in the field. At the festival they will be demonstrating their superior skills. Visitors can also look forward to what’s in store at the Baking Perfection marquee. If you suffer from leaden loaves, sagging

sponges or rock hard scones then don’t despair, because it’s here you’ll learn how to become a faultless baker, with top tips from a varied line-up of expert cooks including Aga supremo chef David Pengelly, who will be creating bread and cakes; James Strawbridge, owner of the Posh Pasty Company, who will be cooking the perfect Cornish pasty; and MasterChef 2013 semifinalist Saira Hamilton who will be revealing her Bengali baking secrets.

EX October 14 Powderham.indd 3

There will also be plenty going on to keep young budding chefs entertained. Children can join in short, free, hands-on sessions throughout the day, led by inspiring and entertaining cookery teacher Joe Mann of Exeter-based Fun Kitchen. Advance tickets cost £5 adults, under-16s £1.50, under-4s free, families £14. On the day tickets cost £6 adults, under 16s £2, family tickets available. Visit www.powderhamfoodfestival.com 29

Hairy Bikers Dave Myers and Si King are among the celebrity chefs heading to Exeter to take part in The Big Food Show at Westpoint from Friday, October 24, to Sunday, October 26. ave Myers and Si King have been friends for more than two decades. They met while both working on a Catherine Cookson television drama. In those days Si was an assistant director and locations manager, while Dave was a make-up artist specialising in prosthetics. They had similar backgrounds, both growing up in the North East (Dave was born in Barrow-in-Furness, Si in County Durham). But what really bonded them was a love of bikes and food. And so it was that their private passions became a very public career as The Hairy Bikers. It took them around the country – where they explored regional cooking and baking – and around the world from the Mississippi to Asia. They also managed to lose a lot of weight together and have set up their own diet club.

With books, DVDs, TV programmes, appearances and food festivals, and their own theatre tour, their lives have been played at full throttle for more than 10 years. Dave even managed to squeeze in a run on Strictly Come Dancing last year. There’s a real drive and energy to their work, but you have to rewind to their childhoods to find out where the passion for food comes from, and it’s no surprise to discover that both their mums were good home cooks. Si’s dad went to sea and would bring back what were then (in the mid-60s) considered to be exotic ingredients. “Most women got perfume when their husbands came back,” recalls Si, 46. “My dad brought back star anise and lemongrass. My mum was such a good cook and so inventive, so the weirdest smells in the village would be coming from the King household. People would be saying ‘he must be back... it stinks!’ “My sister and brother could cook well, my dad could cook well and my mum was fantastic. “My father died prematurely when I was eight, so my mum and I would spend quality time together in the kitchen, baking bread.” Food was also important in the Myers household. “My mum was a really good, traditional home cook,” says Dave, 57. “Monday would be washday and then baking bread. My dad would make soup and sweets – things like toffee apples – and I’d go fishing.” But life changed when Dave was eight. His mum was diagnosed with MS and became disabled, with Dave’s dad taking over the running of the household. “It was pretty much of a muchness when it came to food – Smash, tinned peas and thin mince,” says Dave. “I started cooking when I was 12 and doing the main supermarket shop for the household. I can remember carrying the carrier bags and the handles cutting into my hands. When I came back with a pizza, it was the first time we’d seen one. It seemed very exotic. “I’d cook mince and mashed potatoes, roast chicken and stuffing with roast potatoes. “We’d have lots of fish because Morecambe Bay was nearby, so we’d have plaice or the odd sea bass and dip it in flour, egg, then breadcrumbs – those bright orange breadcrumbs you can see from outer space 32

The past 20 years have been amazing. We are lucky to be in the middle of a food renaissance – and then fry it. I’d make fishcakes with the fish left over. “In the 1970s we saw the emergence of the curry houses. They were colourful, exciting things. But the past 20 years have been amazing. We are lucky to be in the middle of a food renaissance.” The Hairy Bikers are both looking forward to coming to Exeter next month for The Big Food Show at Westpoint. Seasonal produce and regional produce are subjects close to their hearts, a passion they seem to share with the public.

“Look at the success of The Great British Bake Off,” says Dave. “Who’d have thought competitive cake making would be primetime telly? But that interest is there and food festivals are one of the biggest gauges of its popularity. We’re very much looking forward to going to Exeter.” Si agrees: “I love doing the food festivals. You’re with a lot of like-minded people. We’re always slightly irreverent and love to have a laugh. Food is about fun and messing about and being daft, which is what Dave and I do when we’re cooking together.” The two men, and their families, are very close. “To have this shared experience makes us the luckiest men in the world,” says Dave. “We’ve known each other for 20 years and it’s great to share food, travel and the diet.” Si adds: “We love what we do, and what we do is very precious to us. It’s lovely to be invited to a fine food festival like this.”

We’ve got a lot of bottle... Advertorial The craft beer scene across the UK is very exciting right now, with new breweries opening up almost weekly. And with 15 beer lines the Beer Cellar on South Street in Exeter is a great place to try new and exciting brews. With beers from across Britain, Europe and North America, and the selection changing daily, there will always be something new to try in this gem of a town centre bar. The fridges are stocked with around 50 beers and ciders in bottles and our selection of wines and spirits means there is something to suit all tastes. Craft beer is really taking off in Exeter, with the well-established breweries producing consistently high quality beers and new smaller operations experimenting with new styles. We try to support the local breweries by always having at least one local brew on draught, but what we specialise in is sourcing the beers that you might not see often in this part of the world. Most popular this summer have been the hoppy American-style pale ales which match perfectly with our American-inspired menu, featuring classic bar snacks like hot wings and deep-fried pickles. For those who want to know a bit more about what they are drinking, we have run tasting and food matching sessions with beer sommelier and head brewer at Firebrand brewery Joe Thompson, as well as ‘tap takeover’ events where a brewery displays three or more

beers so you get to taste their range and get a feel for the brewery style. From the September 20 until October 5, we’ll be bringing a little slice of Bavaria to Exeter with our Oktoberfest celebrations, where you'll be able to grab a bratwurst with sauerkraut and wash it down with a Maßkrug of authentic Munich beer, lederhosen optional!

Cosy Let’s get

Award-winning food critic Becky Sheaves pops into compact Sidmouth coffee shop Shelleys in Sidmouth, and finds great food – but service without a smile

I can’t be the only mum who is heartily glad the kids have gone back to school, purely from a financial point of view. Ours managed to blow £35 in two hours pottering around Exeter the other day before announcing they were “bored” and wanted to go home. Where they would be even more bored, no doubt. Another friend gave her two, plus a teenage child minder, £40 to look round an educational-style history-based tourist attraction (OK, Bodmin Jail) in the holidays. The three of them were in and out in half an hour, having spent 15 minutes of that in the gift shop, spending every last penny of her hard-earned cash. I’m trying to explain, really, how it was that I ended up having lunch in Selley’s Coffee Shop in Sidmouth just recently, accompanied by two kids, my husband and Maria our Spanish student. We were in town basically wasting time (and money). Looking at the lifeboat, mooching around the museum, shopping for flip flops, wishing the sun would come out. Instead, a light drizzle developed. “Let’s go in here,” I said, somewhat in desperation. “I’ve heard it is nice.” The coffee shop is tucked away in a funny little corner of town just off the main shopping streets, called Libra Court. This is a cobbled courtyard that might once perhaps - have been a stable yard back in the days when Sidmouth was a fashionable Regency watering hole, visited by Jane Austen. It’s near the sea but there are no sea views. Instead you are in a cosy little world of your own here, as the courtyard is surrounded by little shops selling all sorts of knick-knacks. You can have tea on the café’s spotty-clothed tables either inside the café itself or outside in the courtyard. Given the weather, we went indoors.

It is tiny, but very prettily decorated. “What is this, I see it everywhere?” asked Maria. “Bunting,” we explained. She likes it and wants to take some home. They don’t do bunting in Spain, apparently. Libra Court is covered in the stuff, as, indeed, is Sidmouth. We really liked the shops and I ended up buying a set of stacking wooden boxes for no apparent reason (they were nice, though) and Maria snapped up a pair of silver earrings. For lunch, I had a really lovely crab salad – tasty and large, beautifully presented with generous amounts of very fresh crab and a great dressing. John had a hearty crab sandwich, which he also liked a lot. Maria and Luke had a cheese and tomato panini each which were much fancier than the usual, with sundried tomato as well as fresh toms, and salad alongside. William had already had lunch at home (at about 11am, it was that sort of day) so contented himself with a slice of Victoria sponge, which was fantastic and clearly properly home-made. Just as it should be. Seated as we were just in front of the counter and a few yards from the kitchen, we could gather that the chef was quite a character, with a fairly penetrating voice. He was not to be rushed, shall we say. I can forgive this, as the cooking was good. But the front-of-house the service, I have to mention, was lacking in both smiles and speed. The lady at the counter chatted to a colleague and the long waits for service and food felt worse than they needed to due to the lack of chat, eye contact and general attention. Even though the place was quiet and she was sitting just feet from us, we had to get up and ask for extra drinks and second courses. The décor is mainly pastel-style country kitsch. Think retro rainbow-coloured chandeliers and pictures of VW Beetles. It’s actually really pretty. And then there are odd appearances of Indian statues of Shiva & Co on shelves. This unusual mix is to be explained, I later discovered, by the fact that this café was taken over recently by a family who used to live for many years in Goa, India. They have come back to the UK and are – apparently – offering the same menu that they once cooked for the tourists of India. There’s not a hint of the subcontinent about the food, though, which is modern European, with some superb traditional British baking.

It’s definitely a very sweet little place and I wish the new owners well with their venture. The cooking is spot on, the décor is charming. All they need to do is get up to speed with us grumpy, demanding British customers and our expectations of swift, attentive service. Something tells me tourists on the beaches of Goa might generally be in a better, more laid-back mood than we were that day. But by the time we had all had a piece of the Victoria sponge and generous cups full of hot chocolate, we were in far better spirits than when we arrived. And it had stopped raining. Now you can achieve the high-end designer look on any budget with the arrival of regular designer re-sale pop-up shops in Exeter. The second Tags-on.com boutique shop is being held in the city centre for one day only, offering shoppers the chance to update their autumn and winter wardrobe with top brands at a fraction of their original retail price Pictures: GRW Photography Fashion lovers and designer label fans can look forward to getting their hands on new and pre-loved designer clothes at bargain prices. Devon-based designer re-sale boutique Tags-on.com is bringing its pop-up boutique back to Exeter on Saturday, October 4, at the Rougemont Thistle Hotel in Queen Street, from noon to 7pm. The venue will showcase its autumn/winter collection of clothes, bags, shoes and accessories, many of which have not yet gone online. Sought-after luxury brands in the range include Prada, Stella McCartney, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, Mulberry, Louboutin, and Miu Miu. Garment prices start from just £10, and there will be changing facilities to try before you buy.

Tags-On.com was launched when Vicky Silverthorn, owner of professional London-based de-cluttering service You Need a Vicky, found herself doing wardrobe clear-outs and having to find homes for bags full of designer clothes, footwear, and accessories that were brand new or had only been worn a couple of times and were in amazing condition. The business, which offers consumers the chance to not only buy but sell designer labels independently, is run and managed by Vicky’s cousin Katie Silverthorne, from Exminster, whose fashion credentials span nine years. “We sell such a huge range of designers, from Chanel to the more obscure labels people will have heard of less, but which true

followers of fashion will know of,” explains Katie. “For some people, owning a designer item is a novelty, such as a Mulberry handbag, whereas other people it’s how they shop and what they wear. “The pop-up shops are great for both those people and those who can’t afford to buy designer labels new from the shops. “If an item has never been worn and still has the tag on, we sell it for a third of its original price, and if it has been worn it is sold for a quarter of the retail cost, so it’s huge discounted prices.” Tags-on.com pop-up shops are also held in London, Birmingham 42

Katie recalls: “Our first Tags-On pop-up shop event was held at Exeter Golf and Country Club, but this time we thought we would try a more central location which will appeal to shoppers in their natural environment. “We have also cut it down to one day so that everyone can look at what’s on offer on the same day. “There will be lost of chunky knits, cashmere clothes, work wear, formal wear, party wear and day wear, as well as lots of accessories.

“With stock in a huge variety of sizes and styles, we’ve got something for everyone.” Entry is free, and fashionistas can also find more bargains on the Tags-on.com website, as well as discover how to recycle their own designer clothes and make some money in the process. Tags-On.com also holds regular celebrity charity auctions with clothes donated straight from celebrities’ wardrobes, with 75 per cent of the profits going to the celebrities’ charity of choice. Celebrities so far have included Ed Sheeran, Lily Allen, Eliza Doolittle, and Nick Grimshaw.

The definition of the word verve is ‘enthusiasm, vigour, especially in artistic work’, and Verve Hairdressing and Beauty certainly lives up to its name, discovers Anita Merritt Pictures: GRW Photography

hat is so charming about Exeter is that no matter how well you think you know the city, there’s always a hidden surprise down its historic streets. On the edge of the main shopping area lies the historic Iron Bridge, and it’s only when you climb down its steep metal steps that you find yourself in Lower North Street, home of Verve Hairdressing and Beauty.

The unisex salon has been running from its current location for the past four years, and it didn’t have far to move from its last premises because it previously occupied the shop next door. The moment you walk through the door you know that this is a place you’ll love because of the warm welcome you receive from either the staff or owner Nadine Anvari. An inviting atmosphere is also created by

the salon’s sleek and contemporary styling. The silver, black, and aubergine colour scheme adds an air of elegance, which is complemented by the staff ’s matching uniform of purple dresses. As well as looking the part, Verve also lives up to the meaning of its name which is defined as ‘enthusiasm, vigour, especially in artistic work’. “I have always wanted to have my own 45

It’s a warm and welcoming salon and we carry out the best service we can.” Delivering that promise begins with offering clients, both new and old, a complimentary full consultation with not just one stylist but all the hairdressers in the salon. Nadine explains: “We all get involved as more heads are better than one and we each have our different specialities, whether it be colouring, cutting or hair extensions.” Verve uses Racoon natural or fibre hair extensions to add length, colour and volume, and Nadine is the salon expert. “They are the top brand in the country,” reveals Nadine, who has six years’ experience of hair extensions. “The glue we use is made out of tree sap and orange peel so it’s completely natural. I make the bond myself so I can make it as small as I want to suit the client. “The hair quality is absolutely beautiful and of a very high standard so it stays glossy. My clients also don’t have to take them out in one go after six months because I constantly rotate them. Every four to six weeks I take out a couple of rows and replace them so it’s a look that can be maintained.” Also available is the Racoon Hair in Recovery Programme, a safe and sensitive programme to help the thousands of women who experience medical hair loss. Nadine says: “The results are absolutely incredible and it gives so much confidence back to people. We offer consultations in our beauty room so it’s completely personal and private.” The beauty side of Verve is as popular as its hair services, with a focus on regular pampering treatments from massages to manicures, and waxing to spray tans. “It’s all the going out and making yourself glamorous treatments,” says Nadine. “HD Brows have become massive because celebrities have them. A lot of people copy the brand; it’s a bit like GHDs, you get 46

cheaper versions. “We offer authentic HD Brows using its method and products. The reason it is so popular is because it defines peoples face shape more. “The growing programme HD Brows has developed is unbelievable. We get a lot of clients who don’t have eyebrows at all because of over plucking or health reasons. In fact, 80 per cent of our eyebrow clients are on the growing programme.

ago, and customers like that I can do their hair and also their lashes because it’s more convenient for them.” Keeping up with the latest advances in hair and beauty is essential to Verve to deliver the best service they can to customers. It also enables them to keep clients up to date with the latest trends. Revealing what’s in store this autumn and winter, Nadine said: “Ombré is still really in, but what we will probably see is darker shades of ombré. We’re also expecting to see warmer brown-based colours and darker blondes. “This season it’s all about mid-length hair and loose waves, like Cheryl Cole. For men, the celebrity style icon is still David Beckham, and Made in Chelsea-style quiffs which are long on top and short on the sides. “As it gets closer to Christmas we’ll start doing lots more hair-ups, as well as spray tans and nails. We’re already fully booked for December 20!” Those appointments are regular customers and many have been with Verve since the beginning. “I even have clients who have been with me since I first qualified,” says Nadine with pride. “It’s really nice because you grow a bond and friendship with them and they trust you with their hair. If you have a hairdresser who knows you personally that’s when you get your hair right.” “HD Brows are tailored to the individual as you go by face shape, personality, what your eyebrows do naturally and whether you want thick or thin brows. “We also demonstrate how to pluck your eyebrows properly because a lot of people do it in a direction which breaks the hair follicles. We also offer eyebrow extensions which are great for people whose eyebrows are patchy or do not grow. “I decided to train in beauty 18 months

Why we’re

saving face

C

urrently the aesthetic, non-surgical beauty industry is almost entirely unregulated and unaccountable, yet it is worth up to £3bn a year – 70 per cent of which is generated from non-surgical treatments such as Botox, dermal fillers and facial peels. I regularly get clients who are unhappy about treatments, such as Botox, carried out elsewhere. They have been drawn in by the presumed low cost in advertisements, Botox parties, and quick fix ideas, and this is why they end up with complications. The government have recognised the risks to the consumer and has responded to The Keogh Review, which made a clear recommendation for an independent register. As the government have declined to act on the recommendation, an independent and impartial accreditation scheme for aesthetic medical professionals and clinics called Save Face has risen to the challenge and launched in September. Radiance MediSpa has been added to its centralised register which offers consumers free and impartial information and access to expert advice via forums, blogs, fact sheets, FAQs, videos and live chat sessions on a range of topics/treatments. It also provides clear channels to leave feedback through testimonials and rate cards, as well as appropriate support and guidance when things go wrong. Another reason for my being so excited about Save Face is that it reinforces our commitment to giving clients a whole hour’s initial assessment when I can look not just at wrinkles but face shape and skin condition, so that I can offer a whole-face rejuvenation and explain what is available in this exciting, ever-changing industry. As an aside, I have just been at the MERZ conference in Liverpool this week, and will now be doing Botox in the jowl area as a preventative treatment, and not just when the jowls have appeared. It is not right to merely fill in the cracks and do a quick fix. Clients are regularly amazed at the depth and scope of my hourlong consultations. I am proud to do it properly and be the only clinic in Exeter on the Save Face register. Dr Ros Debenham MB ChB MRCGP Radiance MediSpa 01392 277799 www.radiancemedispa.co.uk

charm

Three times a The old adage that things happen in threes has certainly proved true for Radiance MediSpa, which is celebrating a trio of award nominations, including one win so far. The Exeter-based hair and beauty specialist has topped hairdressing salons across the country this year for its salon style, after winning the Salon Design Award at the HJ’S British Hairdressing Business Awards in London. The awards reward and recognise individuals and salons nationwide that excel in the business of professional hairdressing, and judges were impressed by Radiance MediSpa’s high-end hairdressing salon with bespoke styling stations and cutting edge cream furnishings. Owner of Radiance, Dr Ros Debenham, said: “The team, my daughter Katie, and myself are completely thrilled to have won this award. We engaged Beauty Planet designers, a top London team, and worked to get a

very luxurious yet professional look that never fails to impress. It is so fantastic that all our time spent and attention to detail has been recognised.” To add to their recent success, Radiance is also a finalist at this year’s Aesthetics Awards for Best New Clinic and an additional nomination for Reception Team of the Year.

The Aesthetics Awards are presented to those who have worked hard to represent the highest standards in clinical excellence, product innovation and practice achievement and have truly excelled in the field of aesthetic medicine. The winners will be announced on Saturday, December 6, at the Park Plaza Hotel in Westminster.

Plastic fantastic For the first time ever, fresh contemporary art by 25 Devon artists will be making an appearance under the umbrella of the 152-year-old Devonshire Association For many years the Devonshire Association, which promotes the understanding and enjoyment of Devon, has covered the county’s history, geology, biology, architecture, literature and, more recently, music but has given much less attention to the plastic (visual) arts. To redress the imbalance, it has planned a major exhibition to be hosted by Exeter art gallery Gloss-Art from Thursday, October 9, to Sunday, October 26. The 25 artists participating in the landmark exhibition are all members of the association and many have national or international reputations. They include the painters Valerie Barden, Nicholas Collier and Margaret Dean; sculptors Roger Dean and Peter Randall-Page; textile artists Anne Jackson and Christine Sawyer; ceramicists Laurel Keeley and Jenny Southam; woodengravers Hilary Paynter and Shirley Smith; printmakers Mary Gillett and Jenny Pery; and book artist Joanna Radford. Dr Robin Wootton, former chairman of the Devonshire Association, said: “Devon has a long artistic history. Joshua Reynolds, founder of the Royal Academy, and Nicholas Hilliard, master of the miniature, were both

native Devonians. Other famous painters, including JWM Turner, Francis Towne and Samuel Palmer, were attracted to Devon by its unique landscape. “Contemporary painters continue to be inspired by Devon’s high moors and folded valleys, its rivers and its coast, and it now seems appropriate to celebrate the county in this way.” There will be four events linked with the exhibition in the gallery. On Friday, October 10, at 7pm, professor Sam Smiles will discuss Devon and the Modern Movement 19001960. The following week, Anne Jackson will present The Devon Witchcraft Series of Tapestries on Thursday, October 16, at 7pm. The topic of The Art of Folding Structures will be discussed by Dr Robin Wootton on Thursday, October 23, at 7pm. The final event is A Demonstration of Wood Engraving by Shirley Smith on Saturday, October 25, from 11am to 3pm. Tickets for the three talks are £5 each, booking is essential. Entry to the gallery is free. Gloss-Art in Barnfield Crescent, Exeter, is open Thursday, 9.30am to 5.30pm, Friday and Saturday, 9.30am to 6pm, and Sunday, 10am to 5pm. Call 01392 278522. 53

The love of landscape

Talented Exmouth-based artist Ray Balkwill is well known internationally for his landscapes in watercolours, pastels, and oils. A collection of his contrasting landscapes has been put together to form a special book and DVD, accompanied by an exhibition Ray, from Exmouth, has always been a strong advocate of working en plein air and his inspiration comes from being immersed in the landscape. The sketches and paintings featured in the book not only evoke a memory of time and place special to the painter, but also give a sense of his working methods. It presents a fascinating insight into his own personal and physical relationship with the varied landscapes he encounters. Ray explains: “Although travelling has been an essential and integral part of my work, it has also confirmed to me that my deeprooted attachment to my native Devon is not misplaced. “The exhibition features sketches, oils and mixed media paintings, many of which

At heart, Ray Balkwill is a romantic painter in the English tradition and is perhaps most renowned for his portrayals of the Exe Estuary. In his new book Travelling Light, he journeys to more distant painting grounds through a number of contrasting landscapes in pursuit of new and inspiring subjects. It takes the reader from the rugged and romantic landscapes of Scotland and Ireland, to the sun-drenched vistas of Italy and the splendour that is Venice. Many of the works featured in the book can be appreciated in real life, rather than solely in the pages of a book, because Ray is hosting an exhibition in the Studio Gallery at Thistledown in Marley Road, Exmouth, from Friday, October 17, to Monday, October 20. 54

His paintings can be found in private collections and galleries all over the country, as well as abroad. For the past two decades he has tutored painting holidays in the UK and abroad and is a regular contributor to art magazines. He is the author of seven books and two art instruction films and his work has also featured in many other publications. The exhibition will be open daily from 10am to 5pm. Ray will also be giving an illustrated talk entitled An Artist’s View at Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum on Wednesday, November 26. For more details visit www.raybalkwill.co.uk

1. The Vio The Vio is a real marble fireplace surround, and the example on display in the showroom is a marquise 60” in natural cream marfil. It normally retails for £3,000, but as there are only four left in stock, it is being sold at the discounted rate of £1,485. Simon said: “It’s a double top hand-carved marble fireplace and you can have it with either a gas or electric fire. It is a big fireplace and you won’t get much better for the price as marble is expensive.” The fire pictured is a Danesbury electric fire, which costs £349. It is available in brass effect, black, and antique brass effect. It is supplied with real coal and includes a 2kW fan heater with two settings, thermostat control, and inset fire with Optiflame effect which can be used independently of heat. An LED version is also available for £449, with silver as an additional colour option. For flexibility, the new Turner Large Step 54” is expected to become one of the bestsellers this winter because of its splendour and flexibility. The surround is micro marble; small pieces of real marble crushed and reconstituted to give an authentic finish without any natural imperfections. It is available in nine colours from pure white to Roman stone, and costs from £899. Simon said: “You can have this fireplace made to the size you want. “It is new on the market and its classic design and flexibility will suit any home.” The fire pictured is a Danesbury electric fire, as detailed in the Vio description. The Turner Large Step is suitable for both gas and electric fires. The Malaga rigel 54” with LED lights is a contemporary fireplace. It is available in nine colours and costs from £899. Simon said: “It has a modern, streamlined look. It can be made taller or wider as required.” The fire shown is an Athena LED electric fire, available in black or chrome, priced £399. Key features include 2kW heat, access controls, thermostat control, and economical running costs. Simon added: “The latest LED technology gives the impression of smouldering coal and flickering flames, and is both realistic and cost effective.” Whether you’re after stone or micro marble, the Parrona has an option available to suit every taste, budget and space.

Price: £1,499 for surround and fire Surround: Agean limestone with granite hearth

The natural stone mantel is a Hersham in agean limestone and is available as a 54” or 48”. It can have an arched provident fire frame and different cast iron back panel options are available. The hearth is polished granite. It is suitable with either a gas, electric, or multi-fuel fire. The fire is a gas insert with either a glass or open front. If a multi-fuel fire is preferred, the only option is open fronted. Simon said: “A few years ago one in 10 people would buy an electric fire, but now it’s six in 10. “Electric fires have become the best-seller, followed by gas and then wood burners. The reason electric fires are so popular is because they are so efficient to run and you don’t need a chimney. Now that more people are installing solar panels on their roofs they can have their electric fire working for free. “For those without solar energy, you can run the flame effect setting without heat for five hours a day, seven days a week, for less than around £2 a year.” The Hersham is available as a complete package with surround and fire for £1,499.

It is up to 94 per cent energy efficient and comes in brass, polished silver, brushed silver, and black. Different frets are available ranging from modern to traditional. Bring your bathroom back into fashion with style advice from interior designer Lesley Taylor

Trendsetter It’s that time of year again, the time of trends. As all the shops and designers release the new season’s lines, everyone is talking about the new trends and styles. Interior design is no different to the world of fashion, and so here is a rundown of the very latest in bathroom design. Currently, there is a huge trend for Scandinavian-style bathrooms. This is a look that is very light, natural and organic. Think pale wood and lots of white walls and matt white sanitary ware. Laufen’s Palomba range is particularly good for this look. Consider pale wooden tiles for flooring and walls; an excellent alternative to using real wood in a bathroom, as it is much more durable and cost effective. If you don’t want to go for a wooden look, consider large format tiles which fit perfectly with the minimalist style. Just ensure whatever choice you make, they are treated with an anti-slip coating

to minimise your risk of falling on a wet surface. When it comes to accessorising your space, think minimalist. Less is more, and keep your colours pale and cool. Shutters make a beautiful and unfussy alternative to curtains or blinds, and are particularly synonymous with the Scandinavian look. There is a huge range of minimalist taps on the market; consider a wall-mounted product to add to your look, in a clean chrome. In the opposing vein, one of the biggest trends in bathrooms at the moment is lux; all-out, luxurious glamour. Consider rich marble tiles, offset with beautiful gold accessories. Use the idea of a bathroom in a five-star hotel as your reference point. For something different and unusual, look to Lefroy Brooks, which does a range of stunning black sanitary ware. Combined with gold taps and accessories, this will be the ultimate of lux, with an extremely elegant and contemporary

Laufen Kartell’s bathroom range reflects the orange trend www.laufen.com

twist. Be careful not to confuse the luxurious look with traditional styles. If you want to experience a beachy, summery vibe all year round, the coastal trend could be perfect for you. Think of beach houses and coastal walks and your inspiration is endless. Consider using pebble mosaic tiles, mixed with bleached wood furniture. Laufen has a vanity unit in chalked oak, which would be great in this setting. Waterfall taps can work particularly well for this style too. Wooden tiles can be used here, in light, warm tones. For your colour palette, stick to sandy, natural colours for your walls and floors, while bringing in colours from the ocean into your accessories. Think aquas and blues in your towels and consider using this as an inspiration for any artwork you may put up. Coral and shell decorations give the perfect accent to this look, and make stunning features in bowls or on shelves. If you don’t want to change your bathroom, but would like to give it a fresh update in an on-trend colour, look to orange. This is a bold statement, and makes a perfect accent to a room, possessing lovely warming, brightening qualities. Bring it in through towels and other accessories, even a zesty orange stool. If you want to go a step further, Designers Guild carry a stunning orange vinyl wallpaper, perfect for bathroom environments and giving a vibrant update to any wall. Whatever style you like, it is possible to bring it into your bathroom, whether you go the whole way and refurbish for a brand new look, or whether you refresh the space by the simple updating of your accents and accessories. Just remember there is no reason why your bathroom can’t be as up-to-date and as stylish as your wardrobe. Lesley Taylor is an interior designer with years of experience in both domestic and commercial property. As a member of the British Institute of Interior Design, she has established herself as one of the UK’s top design consultants and has worked on a broad range of projects throughout the UK. change Season of

Lament the summer’s passing if you must, but autumn always brings a harvest of new looks to delight decor divas. A complete revamp may not be necessary, or even affordable, but these days, designer ranges are often replicated on the high street. And more purse-friendly ranges make following new trends, and refreshing jaded summer rooms, much easier. Celebrate the change of season and create a sanctuary fit for hibernation with these top picks. Conran’s ranges for Marks & Spencer consistently impress. The Hornby Desk, £499, and Mackenzie Chair, £279, are two of its latest gems, perfect for a home office. Lugets’ Sporting Saturday Lugets of Exeter celebrated its 200th anniversary in spectacular fashion with the help of Exeter Chiefs. The team’s captain and Australian International Dean Mumm, along with England International Tom Johnson and Chiefs team-mate Luke Cowan-Dickie, swapped their rugby kit for frockcoats and toppers on Cathedral Green, Exeter. The players participated in Lugets’ Sporting Saturday event by joining the store’s staff in outfits that would have been worn in 1814. Entertainment and pastimes of a bygone age were also enjoyed including skittles, magic, jugglers and live music from the Copperfield Ensemble who played Victorian music with a twist. Lugets is the city’s oldest independent gentlemen’s outfitters and tailors.

Southernhay Breakfast Club Tony Rowe OBE Rowe gave a talk at the latest Southernhay Breakfast Club about his successes in business as well as the opportunities that next year’s Rugby World Cup present to local business. More than 60 people attended the event at the Southgate Hotel. The Southernhay Breakfast Club is a joint event held every three months and organised by Kirk Hills Chartered Accountants and Beckworth Independent Financial Advisers.

Sport and sweet

Stuart Tolley gets sporty with the Abarth 500C Custom convertible, and discovers it’s not just a pretty face Pictures: GRW Photography “Haha, that’s going to be fun!” I chuckled to myself when I found out what I would be driving next – the Abarth 500C Custom convertible. “A convertible? Really?” I looked out of the window at the dark, gloomy clouds above. I pulled into the Vospers showroom in Plymouth (it’s like an indoor shopping village with all its manufacturers under one roof) and was pointed in the direction of the Abarth showroom to meet John. The space screamed fun and performance with racing-style car seats instead of desk chairs and three or four different sporty Abarths on display – one of which was a limited edition, with only 50 ever made. I took the keys and went to find the little chap. The Custom is the base model for the 500 series but, that said, my first thought was that with the colour-coded body kit, front fog lights, twin exhausts, and upgraded, beautiful 17” 10-spoke

72

Abarth_500C.indd 1

EX October 14 26/09/2014 13:20:50

alloy wheels, it certainly had the looks of a nippy little fella. As I approached the car I was told about its first party piece. When you hold in the unlock button on the smart-looking key fob, the soft-top roof smoothly slides back toward the rear of the car; ideal if you are approaching on a warm day and need to get some air circulating before you get in, or (as I liked to do) freak out people walking past while opening it from a nearby hiding place. This didn’t put the roof into the fully open position, however; this needed to be done from inside the car, presumably to keep the boot fully accessible. Inside the car, you enter a fun, funky world of shiny, leathery lushness. A high-gloss-finish dash in this instance matched the colour of the car (which, by the way, is the brand new Tri Coat Red), leather gear knob and handbrake lever, and a substantial leather steering wheel with an array of controls for the radio and Blue&Me hands-free system. This means you can control everything audio without having to take your hands from the wheel. For a techie geek like me – brilliant. Although fabric seats are standard, this particular one had upgraded full leather sports-style seats in the front and back. Another interior feature which deserves a mention is the new TFT Digital display which replaces the boring dials found on most cars. So, how does it drive? This base model comes with the 1.4ltr Turbo T-Jet engine which produces 135bhp, and I must admit it felt like a lot more than that. Around the city streets and B roads, this car was amazing. Especially when I pushed the little ‘sport’ button on the dash; the digital display information turns italic, and the rev counter changes to a chequered flag effect, just to remind you that you’re in sport mode. The drive becomes faster and harder with a lot more sensitivity in the steering and acceleration. You even have a turbo dial that sits on top of the dash, so when you put your foot down you go a little crazy. Couple this with the beefy sound, and the fact you’re forced back into your seat, and you certainly know you are in a high-performance hot hatch.

There are some practical safety functions on this little beaut too, such as rear parking sensors, and front fog lights as standard. In fact, the only things not standard on this model are the leather seats and the colour. Other than that, it’s all in. On motorways and A roads, it’s a little on the noisy side because of the soft top roof, and lack of a sixth gear, but this car is not designed for this type of road. I’m pretty sure it’s been designed for a Scalextric track. Overall, this car is perfect for pretty much everything thrown at it – small enough for the city, big enough for a family, practical enough for shopping trips with good boot space, techy enough to keep you entertained, and fast enough for the boy racer in all of us.

Residential Sales Market Comment - Frank Kelsall, Stags Exeter Exeter offers an extremely diverse selection of homes ranging dramatically in price from the mid-terrace Victorian of around £200,000 to in excess of £1million for a centrally located townhouse. Demand currently outweighs supply within this price range and noticeably when a property receives multiple offers, the end result falls favourably upon the home owner with offers, on occasion, exceeding the asking price.

“Alistair McKnight has managed my properties very successfully for 12 years . Recently I wished to expand my buy-to-let portfolio. He gave me very good and helpful advice about the sort of property to purchase and about the property I eventually chose.” Landlord

“Alistair McKnight offered advice on the best areas for the property search, the type of properties that would serve me best, potential rental yields backed up by historical data and also offered the invaluable service of accompanied viewings. This made my search so much easier and once I had found a suitable property the Stags Exeter office successfully let my property to professional tenants… I highly recommend this comprehensive service.” Landlord

Residential Lettings Market Comment - Alistair McKnight, Stags Exeter Levels of home ownership began to decline over 10 years ago resulting in more people privately renting. We see a high demand from prospective tenants seeking good quality city properties to rent, meaning that city properties make excellent buy-to-let investments for Landlords. We offer a free service to clients advising on types of city investments to purchase and then successfully letting the property thereafter.

A happy

hideaway

For weeks Katrina Fry’s car hasn’t moved, and it has nothing to do with a mechanical fault or needing to renew its MoT. The lifestyle that comes from living in the city centre means she can go almost everywhere she needs to within minutes by foot. Home for the vocal coach for the last seven years has been a little-known backwater called Little Silver, a highly desirable conservation area near famous city landmark the Clock Tower. Tucked away behind Queen’s Terrace, and down a

small private walkway, lies Silver Terrace, a row of stylish Grade II listed three-storey townhouses. What was once a communal tennis court opposite the white-fronted properties has been turned into a car park which can be used for residents’ parking. But that isn’t the only change that has happened in Silver Terrace. Over the last few years, a major transformation has been taking place at Katrina’s home to bring back its charm and character. The top-to-bottom renovation seamlessly blends the old with

EX October 14 Little_Silver.indd 1

the new, and the end result is a home the likes of which you would see gracing the pages of any glossy homes magazine. “The house I came to view in 2007 is unrecognisable to what’s here today,” says Katrina. “I have always loved the idea of combining traditional features with the contemporary. “I relocated here to look after my mother who lived around the corner, and I was looking for a Georgian property because I love the high ceilings and character they offer. 77

26/09/2014 13:27:04

“As soon I stepped inside this house I thought it was amazing and saw its potential. I had lots of ideas and waited three years before I began. The first thing I did was the new dining room sash window and I haven’t stopped since. “Most of the windows have now been replaced and the only room which hasn’t been done is the master bedroom. It was my favourite room when I viewed the house and traditionally it was the drawing room, but as I was living on my own it seemed a bit over the top, so I turned it into a bedroom which is also big enough to fit a sofa as well as a large bed. It’s a cosy room, and the magnolia tree outside is a lovely tree and it gives you privacy.” One room that has been transformed so much it’s unrecognisable from what was there before is the kitchen, part of an extension to the house. It has been modelled on what you might find in a penthouse apartment and, to make maximum use of the space, the back door to the courtyard has been moved and sets of French doors added to open it up and bring in more light. A mini breakfast bar adds an area where you can sit without taking up too much room, and what was once a protruding staircase has been streamlined into a concealed staircase which leads to a versatile room which could be used as a study or fourth bedroom. For Katrina it is the perfect space for her ‘studio’, from where she runs Vocal Fry Academy. If it was being filmed for TV programme Through the Key Hole, this would be the room where you’d get the most clues. Framed cuttings hang from the wall from dating back to the ‘90s when Katrina was one half of girl duo Beijing Spring, who achieved a top 40 hit and toured with Richard Marx and Curtis Stigers. It’s also here some of the most recent work to the house has been done. Katrina, who has also penned a top 10 chart hit for Manchester United football club and represented Britain in the 1989 Eurovision Song Contest, says: “The last work carried out was putting a new roof above the kitchen, and we have just laid the stairs carpet. What we have done has been carried out sympathetically to make the most out of the features of the house.” Above the character, charm and potential of the property, the main reason Katrina fell in 78

Fact file 7 Silver Terrace, Little Silver, Exeter £499,950 Property: A stylish Grade II listed, three-storey townhouse dating from the early 19th century, offering generous accommodation and wonderful period features. Location: Situated in a highly desirable conservation area, in a little-known backwater which is only a few minutes’ walk from the bustling city centre, and easily accessible to Exeter’s two mainline railway stations. love with Silver Terrace was being only a few minutes’ walk from the bustling city centre. “You can’t beat it for location,” states Katrina. “It’s minutes away from the city centre and both stations, and yet when you’re sitting outside in the courtyard garden, it is quiet so it feels almost rural. It’s quite unique.” Despite its central location, parking is available. The adjacent public car park is residents-only parking after 6pm, with a sixmonth permit costing £62.50. Households are also entitled to two off-road yearly parking permits, priced £20 each.

EX October 14 Little_Silver.indd 3

Having loved the buzz of city life for the last seven years, Katrina now wants to swap it for a rural smallholding. “Before I wanted somewhere where everything was on the doorstep, but life has now changed because I’m married and I want to swap location for land,” explains Katrina. “It would suit someone who works from home or who likes city centre life, but wants a quiet life as well. It would also be perfect for a commuter with both stations on the doorstep.” 79

“Times they are a changin” - and it’s time for many businesses to change too. The traditional view that a company’s “Corporate Social Responsibility” is simply to donate money to charities or community organisations or hold or sponsor fund-raising events every once in a while, is no longer good enough. The economy may be in recovery but with government spending cuts only beginning to bite and even greater demands being place on already stretched local charities and community groups, it is today even more important than ever for the private sector to help provide much needed resources and support.

WORKING FOR PEOPLE, DEALING WITH PROPERTY.

O

ver recent years we have been proud to lend our support to ten local charities each year which, along with a number of local groups we have also been able to assist, all do a fantastic job in our local community – each providing valuable and often essential services and all helping make our community a better place to live and work. Like many other good local businesses, at Wilkinson Grant & Co, we believe that the more successful we can become, the more we can contribute to our own local community. As the recovery in the local property market takes shape, we have formed “WG in our Community” to work even closer with local charities and community groups and at the same time merge this with our Work Experience and “Back to Work Experience” programmes for students and Mums looking to get back into the work place (see elsewhere in this edition). Already this year we have been delighted to be the major sponsor for the recent Hopsicare Men’s 10K Walk and the Age UK Exeter 10K run, along with lending our support to the recent thought- provoking and inspiring Ted X Exeter event and are delighted to be lead sponsors of Topsham and Exeter Cricket Clubs for the coming season. We are only able to do these things because of the success of our hard working team and the loyalty and generosity of our clients, who kindly give us their business in the first place and many of

Ads.indd 2

whom kindly recommend us to others. We are certainly not holding ourselves out as shining examples – there are many local businesses and individuals who contribute a great deal – much of which is “under the radar” without recognition or praise. But we believe that, as estate agents dealing with a whole cross section of people - many of whom are new to the area and keen to become involved in our community, we are uniquelyplaced to help raise awareness and support for the local charities and community groups – many of whom are facing real challenges but whose work is vital to the lives and wellbeing of so many in our community. If you would like to know more about local charities and community groups who would appreciate your help as a volunteer, benefactor or trustee or indeed would like to become involved with ‘WG in Our Community’ contact Wendy Aspland on 01392 427500
