What are your best memories? WHILE some people believe transforming homes with expensive makeovers will make a home a memorable place to live, new research reveals celebrations, family milestones and raising children are memories that stay with homeowners. A survey to identify people’s favourite memories of a first home showed that family celebrations, first Christmases, raising children and the feeling of independence and pride remain with the occupants for years to come. The report, a result of a survey conducted by One Poll on behalf of the leading housebuilder David Wilson Homes, also unearthed a wide range of heart warming memories including bringing home a new born baby for the first time to the sense of achievement of owning a property, while some were simply happy to have their own space and the freedom to do what they wanted. David Wilson Homes sales director Louise Ware said that the homeowners questioned had
a wide range of memories of their first home, but family milestones and celebrations were top of the list. She said: “While many people remember particular features such as a country kitchen or a large garden, and even the odd DIY disaster, the majority revealed that family occasions and milestones as their overriding memory of their first home.” Top favourite memories of a first home include: ● Raising children in the home ● First Christmas in a new home ● A sense of achievement in being a homeowner ● House warming party ● A sense of pride in owning a home David Wilson Homes currently has a range of new homes available in Devon. Number of buyers continues to rise THE number of home buyers looking for property continues to rise across the South West of England, according to local estate agency and new homes business Connells. Indeed, its figures show there are now almost a third more property hunters looking to purchase a home in the region, compared to the same period in 2013. High demand from buyers has been spurred on by the continued availability of the Government’s Help to Buy scheme, especially the equity loan option for new homes. This enables buyers to purchase a new build property worth up to £600,000 with a fiveyear, interest-free Government loan for up to 20 per cent of the value of the property. It means buyers may need only a five per cent deposit to purchase a brand new home. “Despite grumblings that the UK market, or perhaps we should say the London market, is overheating, buyers in the South West are out in force and new homes remain a very popular option,” says Jeremy Setter, New Homes Partner for Connells.
“Interest in the new homes developments we have launched so far this year has been phenomenal. Help to Buy has been a significant factor in this, along with the quality and design that new homes offer which really appeals to buyers.” Encouragingly, figures from the Government on Help to Buy show that 89 per cent of those using the equity loan scheme have been first-time buyers, the lifeblood of the housing market. Additionally, despite the notion that it would mainly benefit buyers in London and the South East, over three quarters using Help to Buy have been in other areas of the UK. “The demand for new homes from an increasing number of individuals and families means housebuilders are selling properties very quickly, often before they are even fully complete or off-plan,” Jeremy continues. “What’s clear is that the new homes market is very active in the South West and this is good news for buyers, developers and the need to provide an increasing number of homes to the UK’s growing population.”
Stags run meet and greet at show STAGS is proud to have recently sponsored the Dunsford Show out by Steps Bridge. On a sunny Saturday, the show was very well attended and the visitors had many interesting stalls and stands to browse, including the Stags trailer. The main ring also hosted a number of displays including BMX show, dog show, Samba Band, cheerleaders, taekwondo,
as well as a hotly-contested village bake off. On the day, several thousand pounds was raised for the show’s charity, The Dunsford School PTA. Stags ran a couple of competitions to contribute to the charity, for adults and children, and prizes were handed out to the winners. Further money was raised by our Teign Valley valuer, Stuart
Rintoul, who sat in a set of stocks and spent much of the afternoon being pelted with wet sponges, much to the amusement of the crowds! WHEN the children at Heathcoat Primary School in Tiverton were asked to don their thinking caps to come up with a name for Taylor Wimpey’s new development, they took their research very seriously. Many of the pupils began reading about the Devonshire town’s history while others took to the internet for inspiration. But it was 10-year-old Scarlett Owen’s suggestion which was chosen as the winning development name – thanks to her excellent knowledge of the local area. Deputy headteacher Demelza Higginson says: “The children were very excited to be asked to come up with some possible names for Taylor Wimpey’s new development in Tiverton. “We offered it to the pupils as an activity to do at home and some were using the internet to find out different things about the area, while others already had good local knowledge. “We had some quite interesting ideas put forward, including names inspired by the Heathcoat factory in the town. “Scarlett told me she suggested Rackenford Meadow because the development is off Rackenford Road and it’s in Farleigh Meadow, so she really knew the area well. “When we announced in assembly that Scarlett’s idea was the winner, she was a little bit embarrassed by all the attention but she was very pleased that her suggestion was chosen.” Janine Copleston, regional sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey, said: “We’d like to offer huge congratulations to Scarlett for coming up with the winning idea for our new Rackenford Meadow development and thank all of the children for their fantastic ideas – they’d clearly given it a huge amount of thought and they should all be very proud of their suggestions.” The Rackenford Meadow
